  • The Sounds of Colombia is a selection of music made in Colombia. My focus is on the Afro Sounds and Tropical rhythms.

Cumbia is a native style created in Colombia that has had a broad impact in Latin American countries and also in Europe with musicians such as Will Holland (Quantic), Richard Blair "Sidestepper", Manu Chao, Joan Garriga (Dusminguet and Trova Kungfu bands) or Sargent Garcia.

We will listen to some of the legends of Colombian music like Toto La Momposina, Fruko y sus Tesos, Joe Arroyo or Andres Landero.

The show also includes the current wave of great musicians. Among these are Los Aterciopelados, Bomba Estereo, Ondatropica, La Chiva Gantiva, ChicQuibTown, Mojarra Eléctrica or Pernett & The Caribbean Ravers. Colombia has never stopped producing new genres of syncopated styles and many excellent bands and musicians.

  • World music has a special place in my musical heart and was started by the ground breaking UK group Osibisa in the early 70s with the single music for a Gong Gong, where they created a new genre of music that originated from the early 20th century, Highlife music that is characterised by jazzy horns, multiple guitars and an up-tempo, synth-driven sound.

Then came along the song that launched Osibisa, ‘Sunshine Day, the band set my musical ears, heart and soul alight when they Combined disparate sounds from Africa, America, the Caribbean, Osibisa broke traditional genre boundaries to emerge as the ultimate African band for me.

This was the start of my appreciation and love for world music, after hearing Osibisa I found a record store that specialized in Reggae/Ska and African music, with guidance from the owner and some of the customers, that started my wonderful journey along the musical yellow brick road of world music.

Please enjoy the music I love

  • Periodically, I release an assortment of music I've dubbed "Forgotten Treasures." This ongoing project sprang to life amidst the digitization of my music collection.

As I digitised my music collection from cassette tape, reel to reel and CD, I stumble upon a trove of music that had long evaded my ears, having been tucked away awaiting rediscovery, music that has been buried beneath the layers of time lay a wealth of musical gems that had slipped from my regular rotation. ‘’Forgotten Treasures" was born, a celebration of the overlooked and neglected tunes that once graced my ears.

The playlist is in no particular order, genre, style or time, just as I stumble on the musical gems, I say to myself ‘’I’ve really missed you’’.

  • After two months of inactivity, I am happy to present another new programme for NuDirections.

The program under the name Rise Above aims to help people overcome the sadness and devastation caused by a world in conflict. Never underestimate the healing power of music.

I have included some of my favourite tunes I regularly spin at Big Hands, the coolest bar in Manchester, as well as some discoveries like the talented Jon Lucien. I highly recommend listening to his song "Would You Believe in Me" - he may not be a current singer, but he is truly amazing.

There you will find Manu Chao, Joe Bataan, Dreadzone, Mo-Horizons, Zulu 9.30, International Velvet and Planet Hemp. Of course, Hip hop artist and producer from Dallas Oneofus with the great track and theme of the programme.

  • This is the second in a series of music selections inspired by the music from Black Jazz Records.

The founders were Gene Russell and Dick Schory who created the record label around 1969 and released albums from 1971 to 1975, promoting the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers

With the turn of the turn-of-the-seventies and the emergence of revolutionary developments from Electric Miles, Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and

John Coltrane, the funky mutations of soul and jazz, Black Jazz Records took full advantage of all the possibilities that lay ahead for jazz.

Black Jazz Records was the first black-owned jazz label in 50 years and they achieved the kind of music status that most ’70s and '80s indie record labels could barely dream of.

Later DJs Gilles Peterson and Theo Parrish, made mixes and a compilation album focusing on the Black Jazz label. Through the music, you will hear in my first mix I hope to give you a flavour of what they brought to the jazz world, and how much the music from Black Jazz Records means to me from their short existence.

A further note – in 1971, the first Black Jazz Record album released was Gene Russell’s New Direction, which inspired the birth of NuDirections.

Although the label only lasted a little over five years Black Jazz Records carved its place in the history of jazz.

  • CRAIC AGUS CEOL is an Irish expression meaning live music and having fun.

I hope this tribute to Irish music brings you the excitement and good times that live Irish music brings about. Ireland is a medium-sized island of over 7 million people. Despite that, its worldwide cultural influence in literature and music has outweighed its size.

Like islands such as Cuba, Jamaica and Great Britain, its musical contribution has been extraordinary. These four islands are important musical Meccas. Mestizo Sounds has already made programmes on the music of Cuba, Jamaica’s paramount record label Studio One or about the Mods youth musical movement in Great Britain.

Now, this show wants to present some of the Irish great talents. You will listen to traditional and modern music and a blend of both.

Craic Agus Cell is in the memory of Shane McGowan and Sinead O’Connor.

  • Looking back at 2023 at the music that went under my radar, or I should have played and that I have played.

I just can't believe some of the music that has been put out in 2023, there have been so many times my breath has been taken away by what I have listened to and where it has taken me.

So this show is just not a round up of 2023, it’s what I have listened to during the year be it old or be it new.

  • Antonio Forcione is an artist in every sense of the word, hailed as one of the most charismatic, unconventional guitarists at large in the musical world today. With a host of international awards under his belt, this eclectic composer never ceases to stun his audience on stage, leading him to be referred to as the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar”. His solo performances never fail to bring the house down, let alone when he is performing in duo, as a trio, or with his quartet of international musicians. He breaks the mould of most conventional guitar sounds, be it in the field of jazz, Spanish, African, Brazilian or improvised music, with ferocious virtuosity, passion and humour. He has shared the stage and recorded with some of the world’s most accomplished musicians including Charlie Haden, Angelique Kidjo, Trilok Gurtu, Larry Coryell, Diego el Cigala and many more (see list below) as well as supporting giants such as Phil Collins, Bobby McFerrin, Zucchero and Van Morrison amongst others.
