  • Today’s episode is all about Getting Things Done.

I am excited to share this methodology with you and a few apps that will help your productivity success in an stress-free way!

Before I started to use GTD my to-do list consists of one-word items like a grocery store list, dog food, post office, call mom, post its, etc, with no defined meaning.

If you take anything away from today, this is the most important thing… yes I am giving it to you right now…

Your goal starting today is to use the five steps I’ll talk about to manage actions not time.

I am excited to share with you how to do this.

  • Dr. Kristin Weiss and Buttercup the Oceanpup. Dr. Kristen Weiss is currently Communications Coordinator for the Long Term Ecological Research network.

Previously, she was an early career fellow in Science Communication at the Center for Ocean Solutions, Stanford University, and before that a lecturer in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Southern California where she taught courses focused on ecology, sustainability, and natural resource management.

Kristen received her PhD from James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, where she studied marine governance using policy network analysis. Her goal is to continue communicating about significant environmental issues and contribute to better conservation and management strategies to protect our threatened ecosystems.

In her free time she enjoys adventures with her tiny dog Buttercup–on her stand-up paddle board, at the beach, or in the forest. And taking naps.

Kristen and I met at a 2 week fellowship sponsored by the Center for Ocean solutions six years ago, she had just recently adopted Buttercup a tiny yellow chihuahua that steals your heart away.

When I first met the duo, it was like they had been together forever, the little dog looked like she woke up in Kristens arms… I am excited to dive into the platforms Kristen created with Buttercup to get her dog involved for creating a better world, and much more!

I met Chris as I trotted along through a sustainable whale-watching research project at Scripps Institution of Oceanography - Dr. Chris Parsons has been involved in whale and dolphin research for over two decades and has been involved in projects on every continent. Dr. Parsons is currently a consultant for a number of environmental groups in Washington DC, consulting on marine wildlife, conservation and science communication and policy issues. He was a Governor of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) for nearly a decade and also served two terms as the president of the SCB Marine Section. He is currently on the Board of Directors of both the Society for Marine Mammalogy and the SCB Conservation Marketing & Engagement Working Group.

In addition, Dr. Parsons has published over 170 scientific papers and book chapters and has written a textbook on marine mammal biology & conservation and co-edited a book on marine wildlife conflict resolution.

  • Kathi George is the Global Response Project Manager for the Marine Mammal Center located in Sausalito, CA. She has over 15 years of experience with marine mammal entanglements, specializing in entangled whale response. She’s been on several large whale entanglement cases and trained many volunteers on how disentangle a whale. Kathi and I have been friends for several years now. We met when she first started the California Whale Rescue a non-profit dedicated to serving the community of volunteers who help to untangle entangled whales. Through working together, we came up with a budget and scope to help volunteers, through my efforts during my Sea Grant Fellowship I was able to secure their first major funds that would get the nonprofit off the ground. Since then with Kathi’s leadership she has partnered with one of the biggest marine mammal rescues in California and is leading other amazing projects related to her new role, which I can’t wait to learn more about in this discussion today.

  • Conservationist and Photographer, Celina Chien, is giving a voice to wildlife in the age of the Anthropocene.

"I stumbled across a few other photographers and I realized that I've never even considered it before as a medium of \ communicating conservation and communicating science but I found that it was the perfect bridge between conservation and scientists and the academic world and the public because, you know, we hear all these statistics and we hear about all these horrible facts, you know, the sixth mass extinction and you know it makes us feel helpless. And also it's just so big and abstract and having photos that can be shown, emotional connection between people and environmental issues. I think it can really start a discussion and spark action." Celina shares in her interview about finding photography and using it for science.

In this episode she shares how a new conservation starts out in the field and why she connected with wildlife.

  • One of the most powerful skills to master as a conservation project manager is communication, put simply know when it is time to talk, and not talk just for the sake of talking. We’ve all been to one of these meetings where someone just keeps talking about something that was covered already. Wishing the project manager would redirect the conversation back to the agenda. Or wishing the project manager would just end the meeting so the team can get back to work. Perhaps you are a conservation project manager or want to be one, today I share tips on how you can boost your communication skills so you can be wiser, listen to understand, and respect the time of your team members. Keep your meetings short, concrete, and frequent. Remember to include everyone, complement each other, don’t compete for attention. Because… as George Bernard Shaw states “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

  • Katie Schuler is a new friend I met at Jackson Wild and the International League of Conservation Photographers Wild Speak West in September 2019. I was completely surprised and inspired by Katie’s commitment to work on the world’s most trafficked mammal. She is an advocate for the planet’s most at-risk species, Katie operates at the nexus between science, empathy, and storytelling. More than a decade of filmmaking across six continents has afforded Katie expertise in the field and in the editing room. Using her signature storytelling flair, Katie’s films explore how we live alongside nature, garnering accolades, accruing millions of views, and inspiring meaningful conservation victories. Her production company, Coral & Oak Studios, has partnered with many of the most recognizable names in wildlife filmmaking, including National Geographic, Smithsonian, BBC, HBO, and PBS. Katie’s film, Pangolin, is the winner of six best short awards including Jackson Wild’s 2017 Best Short category. Since its premiere, Pangolin has been translated into four languages, reaching over 75 million people while serving as an important tool for conservation. Two of her latest films, Where Life Begins, and Nigerians Fight to Protect the World’s Most Trafficked Mammal, have won awards at festivals in 2019. Katie is a National Geographic Explorer, a graduate of the Corcoran College of Art and Design, a Henry Luce Fellow, and a member of the International League of a Conservation Photographer’s Emerging League. She currently operates out of Washington, D.C. alongside her husband, Nick, and dog, Bullseye. And now little Schuler!
