Dave Seter has been named Sonoma County Poet Laureate 2024-26. He is a civil engineer, essayist, and poet. He is the author of the full-length poetry collection Don’t Sing to Me of Electric Fences (Cherry Grove Collections, 2021) and the chapbooks Night Duty (Main Street Rag, 2010) and Somewhere West of the Mississippi (forthcoming from Mammoth Publications, 2025). Scott and Tree Mercer met Dave after we had a conversation with Bill Keener, former Executive Director of the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito (and current Cetacean Field Research Associate) who felt Dave Seter was someone we might want to speak with. This is a casual converstation with him, and we intersperse it with his poems and other information. Informed by his career in the field of environmental protection, Dave writes about social and environmental issues, including the intersection of the built world and natural world. He is also studying Lithuanian and has translated a number of poems by contemporary Lithuanian poets into English and published them in literary journals. His poems have won the KNOCK Ecolit Prize and received third place in the William Matthews competition. He is the recipient of two Pushcart nominations. His poetry book reviews have appeared in Cider Press Review, Poetry Flash, and Tupelo Quarterly. He has been an Affiliate Artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts, and has served on the Board of Directors of Marin Poetry Center. See more about Dave, his published and upcoming works, and his Graduate Thesis https://daveseter.com/.

We talk with former UC Davis Design Professor, Ann Savageau, about her efforts to raise plastic pollution awareness with not only her design students, but with people worldwide through a special project called BAG - Bags Across the Globe. In the early 2000s, she created a design class at UC Davis called “Principles & Practices of Sustainability for Designers”. We also talk about the UN's international treaty on plastics, why it was not finalized, and what happens next. The UN international plastics treaty being negotiated aims to create a legally binding agreement to tackle global plastic pollution by addressing the entire life cycle of plastics, from production and design to waste management, to significantly reduce plastic waste and transition towards a circular economy through measures like phasing out unnecessary plastic products, improving recycling, and promoting sustainable alternatives. However, the 5th and final UN session to produce the first legally binding treaty ended in an impasse. Talks are to resume Summer 2025.
We discuss California bag legislation that will go into effect January 1, 2026. See more info here. We bring up exciting new discoveries for alternatives to existing plastics, and we mention the OCTO Group (Open Communications for the Ocean) which helps connect ocean professionals to knowledge and networks. Over 100K ocean professionals in 120 countries use OCTO programs each year.

We talk in early January 2025 with Captain Paul Watson in this 21st episode about his captivity in Greenland (we covered his July 21, 2024 arrest in episode #1 with the President of Sea Shepherd France Lamya Essemlali). We discuss what happened, why this all came down, how he got the notice December 17 that he'd be freed, and what he and the Sea Shepherd France and Brazil, along with the Captain Paul Watson Foundation will be doing next. He became a total rockstar during his 5 months of captivity. We touch on all the support he received during that time, from Presidents like French President Macron to actors like Martin Sheen and Pierce Brosnan, to environmentalists, like Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Sylvia Earle. Captain Paul talks about Japan, Denmark, the US, Canada, the Faroe Islands and more, particularly about the Interpol "red notice" which was used as a political tool against this well-known anti-whaling activist, a founder of Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd, and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, and star of WHALE WARS, a reality TV series that aired on the Discovery Channel for many years. Japan did NOT like that media attention, and thus this story unfolded from our very first episode where we talked with Sea Shepherd France President Essemlali when she was en route from Paris to visit him in his Greenland jail cell last August. This is a story for the ages. Listen in as we uncover insights about this fascinating and inspirational human being - Captain Paul Watson. He now lives in Paris France with his wife and 2 young sons, one of whom is a chess champion...must be lear

In this episode, we speak with Washington DC’s Ocean Foundation Sr. Fellow Richard Charter once again, this time about the scope and impact of President Biden’s recent ban on offshore oil and natural gas leasing along the coastlines of the contiguous 48 states and Alaska.
On January 6, 2025, President Biden took action to protect the entire U.S. East coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California, and additional portions of the Northern Bering Sea in Alaska from future oil and natural gas leasing. In protecting more than 625 million acres of the U.S. ocean from offshore drilling, President Biden has determined that the environmental and economic risks and harms that would result from drilling in these areas outweigh their limited fossil fuel resource potential. With these withdrawals, President Biden is protecting coastal communities, marine ecosystems, and local economies – including fishing, recreation, and tourism – from oil spills and other impacts of offshore drilling. Under Section 12(a) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act,the President of the United States may, from time to time, withdraw from disposition any of the unleased lands of the Outer Continental Shelf.
With this action, President Biden is ensuring that these regions can remain healthy and safe from the risk of oil spills resulting from development that would do little, if anything, to meet the nation’s energy needs. Following this action, President Biden will have conserved more lands and waters than any other U.S. president in history.

In July of 2024, Robin Greenfield - a man who follows an action-based philosophy of life, service and activism and seeks to be the change he wishes to see in the world through an intentional life design of simple and sustainable living - set out walking on a 1,600 mile journey along the Pacific Coast from the Canada/US border to Los Angeles. We caught up with him as He passed through the Gualala-Sea Ranch area in mid-November 2024, 1010 miles into his journey. This is Robin’s walk for, as he says, his own inner truth, his own integrity.
This all came about when Producer/Host Leigh Anne Lindsey saw a post in one of the local Facebook groups about him, that he was in Gualala CA, and wondered “Who is this guy walking from Canada to LA, and why are so many people talking about him on these facebook posts?" She wrote a pos that she was trying to find him when Ruth Downes of the Sea Ranch reached out to her. Ruth and husband Jamie White (a former master rigger for LA and SF Maritime Insitutes) had tracked Robin down, offered for him to stay at their home, and through several texts and posts, arranged for him to come into the local public radio studios in Gualala to do a short interview.
When he sits down with us that afternoon at 4:30pm, he’d been walking all day through Sea Ranch, Stewarts Point, and into Salt Point state park along Highway 1 where they picked him up and brought him back to Gualala.
He writes, “This has been a walk for inner truth and integrity. An opportunity to slow down and simplify my life. To practice mindfulness, presence, gratitude,

This is a conversation with Danielle (Dani) Lipski, Research Coordinator, NOAA's
Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and Jaime Jahncke, founder Point Blue Conservation Science, as they talk about their work off the Northern CA coast studying ocean data aboard NOAA ships.
ACCESS (Applied CA Current EcoSystem Studies) is a project formed by Point Blue Conservation Science (of Petaluma, Sonoma County, CA), Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. ACCESS' core responsibility is conducting ocean research to inform resource managers, policy makers and conservation partners. ACCESS focuses on the oceanic habitats in Federal and State waters of northern and central California, encompassing Cordell Bank, Greater Farallones and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries. These MPAs support marine wildlife conservation and healthy marine ecosystems in north-central California.Dani and Jaime discussed the California Current ecosystem, highlighting its unique features such as the northwest winds that lead to upwelling, nutrient-rich waters, and the formation of feeding hotspots for seabirds and whales. They also clarified the locations of the Greater Farallons and Cordell Bank, both of which are part of the marine sanctuaries they manage. The conversation then shifted to the personal backgrounds of Dani and Jaime, with Dani sharing her experience working for the Channel Islands National

Jack Barkowski started working with Cascadia Research Collective in September 2021, helping collect data and run surveys to monitor baleen whale presence and behavior near the open and close of the Dungeness Crab Fishery in California. He is working on his MSc at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, where he studies patterns in song and non-song humpback whale vocalizations along the U.S. West Coast. His research interests are focused on using acoustics to understand the function of sound in the lives of different marine mammals, and how these functions might be impacted by anthropogenic activities. Currently, Jack works on the SanctSound Project as a bioacoustic analyst, and as a field technician on the ADRIFT project, both of which use acoustics to monitor marine mammal presence in different areas of the U.S. West Coast. Jack will use his skills on the water and as an analyst to support CRC research projects in CA, OR, and WA.Send us a text

Increasingly we experience devestating events due to climate change, from wildfires to hurricanes & cyclone bombs, to extreme heat events and floods. The 10 hottest years on record ever, 2014-2024, seriously affected biodiversity in our oceans. CO2 levels indicated in ice core samples show the trapped CO2 levels throughout the millenia, and now we have a "hockey stick" of change. Why? What happened? And what can we do about it?
Don Hess (Climate Action Group, Grass Roots Institute in Fort Bragg, Mendocino County, CA) shares several ways we can make a difference, from reducing carbon emissions in our choice of cars (how new EVs or hybrids can make a difference), to what we choose to eat (maybe try some plant-based options), to how we manage the energy in our homes (solar/battery options), especially what we do during peak energy-consumption hours. What other small changes could we possibly make? GRI is a network of friends and neighbors studying, promoting, and working to carry out progressive solutions for the Common Good. Recorded late Oct '24, this podcast is a deep dive into the history of whales, dolphins, and porpoises in the San Francisco Bay, and up the Pacific coast.
Keener joined The Marine Mammal Center in the 70s as an animal care volunteer and later served as Exec. Dir. in the early 80s. In his current role as a Research Associate on the Center’s Cetacean Field Research Team, he focuses on the study of whales, dolphins and porpoises.
A co-founder of the former nonprofit Golden Gate Cetacean Research, Bill’s career highlights include the first-ever humpback whale and bottlenose dolphin photo-id catalogs for the Bay, and a multi-year project to document the return of harbor porpoises to the Bay after an absence of 65 years. His latest scientific publications concern the porpoises’ social / feeding behavior based on observations made from the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bill’s other research experience includes assisting with the first harbor porpoise census for the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary in the late 80s. He has worked as a whale watch naturalist for the Oceanic Society and recently retired from the U.S. EPA.
My mission is not only to study our local whales, dolphins and porpoises, but to introduce people to this wildlife spectacle in their own ‘backyard’ of San Francisco Bay. Scientific data and public awareness are both critical to ensure that these unique species are given the protections they deserve.Send us a text

Plastic Pollution in our oceans, and on our planet - what is being done about it? Hear from Dr. Marcus Eriksen, a local Sea Rancher, marine scientist, veteran, and author who co-founded (with life partner Anna Cummings) 5 Gyres Institute which is studying the impact of plastics on the world's oceans, & Leap Lab, a center for art, science and self-reliance. Marcus lectures on marine conservation, breaking down the complexity of objectives and identifying common ground and actionable solutions. He's led more than 20 expeditions through the 5 Gyres Institute exploring and researching the world's oceans. And as co-founder of Leap Lab, he also lectures on biophilia, and the role of art, science and self-reliance to achieve urban resilience.
Dr. Eriksen attended the 4th UN Treaty session in Canada and will be attending the 5th and final negotiation session for the UN treaty on plastic pollution in South Korea from Nov 25-Dec 1, 2024.
This is an extremely important treaty. He says, "If we get it right, we set wheels in motion to decrease the harm from plastics. If not, then industry gets permission to pollute for decades to come."

Superintendent Maria Brown has been with NOAA for more than two decades and shares her background and responsibilities with the Cordell Bank and the Greater Farallones, and how our waters are protected along the Northern California coast, from San Mateo County past the Golden Gate Bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area, all the way North to Manchester Beach in Mendocino County.
She talks about deep sea corals and sea anemomes off our shores, sea urchins, kelp loss, crabbing, and why this wildlife refuge is so important, especially when there are issues related to interests in deep sea mining and offshore windmills.Maria is a San Francisco Bay Area native who grew up exploring the coast. As superintendent, she oversees management of the sanctuaries with a focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in marine protected areas. She guides local restoration efforts of critical estuarine habitats, seabird colonies, coastal shorelines, and kelp forests.
Maria is involved in response to oil spills and vessel groundings; engaging community scientists as well as local, state, and federal agency partners; and is collaborating with Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary to reduce ship strikes to endangered and threatened whales.Note: Please forgive the quality of the audio which is slightly diminished as we had to get this interview at the last moment with cell phones and laptops due to interference with using Zoom for this recorded show.

The CA Coastal Commission is charged with protection and regulation of the state’s 1,100-mile coastline, and Eben has served for 24 years as the technical expert for the agency, advising state and local governments, non-profit organizations, and members of industry on actions and programs that can reduce the causes of marine debris, especially plastic. He works with hundreds of non-profit organizations, local government agencies, and corporate sponsors to coordinate beach and inland shoreline cleanups as well as develop long-term policies that will reduce the need for cleanups in the future by stopping pollution at its source. Mr. Schwartz has a long and broad history of work on plastic pollution and marine debris, topics on which he has become one of the state’s leading authorities. As the leader of California Coastal Cleanup Day, California’s largest volunteer event, as well as the year-round Adopt-A-Beach Program, Eben has helped motivate tens of thousands of citizens to become active in the fight against plastic pollution. Mr. Schwartz served as advisor and author for the California Ocean Protection Council’s Resolution on Marine Debris. He also serves as the primary media liaison for the program, responsible for over 400 news, radio, and television placements each year, as well as assisting in raining over $150,000 annually from corporate partners for the program’s budget.

The mission of the Mendocino Coast Audubon Society is to help people appreciate and enjoy native birds, and to conserve and restore local ecosystems for the benefit of native birds and other wildlife. President Tim Brey talks about the work they do, and the programs they offer for observing birds and other wildlife here on our coast, and the oftentimes negative impact humans can have on them and what we can do about that.
Tim lives in Albion, Mendocino County California where he is an avid birder and leads field trips on land and at sea. He co-hosts two radio programs on NPR radio station KZYX in Mendocino County (The Ecology Hour with Bob Spies, and co-hosts a Celtic music show called Oak & Thorn with Colleen Bassett.) His other interests include brewing, gardening, cooking, woodworking, and history.Field Trips: Field trips are usually scheduled on the second Saturday of the month, September through June, to local birding hot spots.
MCAS-led bird walks at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens are scheduled year-round on the 1st Saturday and the 3rd Wednesday of each month. While these walks are free, the Gardens will charge a guest fee for those not yet Gardens members.
Mendocino Coast Audubon Society supports funding for annual science scholarships at Mendocino College. Recipients are selected by science faculty staff based on academic achievement and financial need, and have participated in laboratory research at the college Field Station near Point Arena:

Howie talks with Resilient Earth Radio about how they got started, what their scope is, and to keep an eye out for a new documentary about the Snake River in which he participates. He will be presenting on the next annual Ocean Life Symposium Friday October 18 (airs live 9am-2pm Pacific on both public radio and YouTube) which is produced by the producers and hosts of Resilient Earth Radio.
Why are sightings important? The Southern Resident orcas' steep population decline reflects declining salmon runs, toxic contamination, and habitat loss throughout their critical habitat. Contributing whale sightings builds a community that cares about these precious whales, and informs and motivates involvement to restore salmon runs and protect whales and their essential habitats. Reports also document travel patterns and trends in habitat use.

Aeon Bashir talks with Resilient Earth about how they are helping our planet from inland Minnesota, USA. Recorded live on KGUA public radio July 19, 2024.
Aeon for Ocean was founded by Aeon, a 7-year-old, to empower his peers to protect the ocean and this beautiful planet. Aeon has been passionate about marine life since he was 2 years old. He is an avid advocate for the ocean and its creatures. His love of the world’s oceans and his drive for conservation has inspired his parents and classmates alike.
Living in the Midwest, far from the coast, made Aeon especially curious about how people inland are connected to marine ecosystems. Our oceans are the life support of planet Earth, an interconnected system of all the Earth's waters. We are also part of this system with every breath we take and through the water we drink. At Aeon for Ocean, our mission is to educate kids on marine life while focusing on ocean conservation in schools & communities.
Their Mission
"To educate and increase awareness about ocean conservation and marine life amongst kids and their greater role in spreading the message to drive action."
Helping people inland understand why then ocean matters, irrespective of where we live or eat seafood, and things they can do from here to help protect it is their mission. Through the Krill2Whale program & other education initiatives, they are teaching kids they can save the world’s oceans for eons!
Most of us continue to focus on human comfort first, with

In this episode and radio show, we talk with Ted Cheeseman, founder of Happywhale, an organization that engages citizen scientists to help identify individual marine mammals, for fun and for science. Their mission is to increase global understanding and caring for marine environments and to make it easy and rewarding for the public to participate in marine science through innovative and engaging collaborative tools which also serves the research community.
Their creation story: From Happywhale.com: Why whales, and what about other marine creatures too? Whales are magnificent and mysterious creatures, they inspire awe and admiration in almost everyone so fortunate as to observe them. We are motivated by a desire to learn more about whales, other marine mammals, and the ocean environment that they – and we – depend on.Resilient Earth Radio is produced by non-profit Planet Centric Media, Sea Storm Studios, Inc., and Mendonoma Whale & Seal Study. Most shows are recorded live or edited for live radio first at KGUA public radio in Gualala, CA (Mendocino and Sonoma Counties), and then produced into podcast format.
The music was donated to this environmental production by international composer Eric Allaman of The Sea Ranch in Sonoma County California. Eric has his own environmental production in the works called Wake Up! The Musical.
