Friends of Seriously,
We've been away for a while, and we wanted to let you know why.
Supriya and Ryan connect for a very personal and powerful conversation about her husband's cancer diagnosis, including what it means for their family moving forward.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to connecting with you all again when the time is right.
-
Dog people get it: the bonds we forge with our furry family members are second to none. We open the show with some "real life" conversation just days after Supriya said goodbye to her beloved pup Cody.
Turns out the Liberals loooooove McKinsey & Co. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre says Canadians deserve to know details about the work the management consulting firm is doing for the government. How bad could the optics be for Justin Trudeau and his party, and why does this matter to the average Canadian?
Alberta and Ottawa are back at it, this time over the phrase "just transition". Is this much ado about nothing? Aren't these two governments actually on the same page (for the most part)?
And, my oh my, Minister Mikey. Premier Doug Ford's nephew steps into our spotlight this week with a memorable podium performance in India.Seriously is grateful for the support of our title sponsor We Know Training.CHECK THEM OUT: https://weknowtraining.ca/

You don't have to be a football fan to be paying close attention to the Damar Hamlin story. Ryan and Supriya open this week's show with the latest on this high-profile story.
Former Conservative leader Erin O'Toole says he'd like to see fewer "F Trudeau" flags in 2023. Current CPC leader Pierre Poilievre says it's no secret why so many conservatives are so angry. Our hosts sink their teeth into a story "richer than maple syrup".
How are you wrapping your mind around the Andrew Tate/Greta Thunberg dust-up, let alone the bigger picture around the "misogynist influencer"?

What's your top news story of 2022? In our final episode of the year, Supriya and Ryan reveal their picks for the biggest newsmaker over the past 12 months.
We also look into our crystal balls to predict the biggest news stories of 2023. What will Canadians be talking about the most into the new year?
Plus, in a wildly-entertaining wrap, Supriya and Ryan run through @paulisci's Headline of the Year nominees and pick their favourites.

It worked: the Toronto Life hit piece on Edmonton has the whole country talking...including Supriya and Ryan. We open this week's episode with hard-hitting analysis from our hosts (born and raised in Montreal and Calgary).
Jagmeet Singh says Justin Trudeau better start taking health care "seriously," or the NDP will pull their support of the minority Liberal government. What's the play, here? What's Singh's end game, and what should Trudeau do about it?
"What should I say, Dave?" Wouldn't you expect the world's richest Twitter troll to do better? We can't ignore Elon Musk booed by 18,000 people at a recent Dave Chappelle show.

Will Justin Trudeau's government have to walk back C-21 - its "gun control" bill - to get it passed? Will Pierre Poilievre have to choose between hunters and suburban soccer moms in plotting his opposition? What role will Jagmeet Singh's NDP play in this perennial hot button issue across the country?
Supriya and Ryan analyze the politicking around Bill C-21, hockey star Carey Price's big blunder, and a particularly offensive "promo code" campaign from the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights just two weeks before the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

It's an Alberta Politics Super Episode on Seriously this week!
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith introduces her long-promised Alberta Sovereignty Act, and it's immediately decried as "undemocratic," "overreach," and "lunacy". What are the stakes, implications, and likely future outcomes of the new premier's Bill One?
Plus, former Premier (and longtime federal Minister) Jason Kenney resigns his seat in the Legislature, stealing some of Smith's headlines. What should we make of his outgoing statement re: polarization in politics? Can anybody take him seriously, considering his track record?

It's official: Donald Trump's not done with the Oval Office. What should we read into the circumstances around his Tuesday announcement, and the midterm election results before that? How might his return impact the GOP (and the rest of the world, for that matter)?
Here in Canada, pediatric ERs and ICUs are sounding the alarm as respiratory illnesses spread in rapid fashion. Why are no Canadian premiers stepping up with mask mandates? How do politics factor into public health nearly three years into a pandemic? How much of an onus is on the general public to mask up without mandates in place?

There was no "red wave," as many predicted, but some high-profile Republicans are claiming big wins following the US midterm elections. What does this mean for President Joe Biden? How about former President Donald Trump? Is Ron DeSantis the next POTUS? Is Marjorie Taylor Greene?
If you're a parent, chances are we don't have to tell you about the nationwide shortage of fever and pain meds for kids. Is anybody taking concerns about this seriously? Also, where's the public health push for the flu vaccine? And why haven't provincial health officials been calling for kids to get their COVID shots? Does anybody care?
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland never suspected her Disney+ comment would get as much play as it did...but to be fair, was it as out of touch as her critics suggest? Was it a "Let them eat cake" moment, or are the words being twisted? When speaking to John and Jill Q Public, what's a politician to do?

What's even real anymore, anyway? Without a shared set of facts, how does democracy even work? We're having big conversations about the foundation of our society, because we can't afford not to. The world's richest man now controls an integral information platform, and Elon Musk doesn't appear to be too swayed by right, wrong, true, or false. So, what does this mean for...everybody?
Premier Doug Ford invokes the notwithstanding clause to prevent education workers from striking, drawing the ire of labour reps, opposition politicians, and the Prime Minister. Are we okay with premiers doing this? Is it truly "unconstitutional," as some are saying? Does Ford have the upper hand positioning this as "keeping kids in school"?
And, truly, WTF was Saskatchewan's government thinking, inviting convicted wife killer Colin Thatcher to attend the Throne Speech? Premier Scott Moe says it was a big mistake...but SERIOUSLY, how does something like this happen? Supriya and Ryan try to wrap their minds around it (spoiler: they can't).

With voter turnout as low as 21% in some Ontario cities, can Mayors really claim they have a "strong" mandate? Do voters (or could-be voters) simply not care, or are there other factors at play?
Premier Doug Ford says he "hasn't been asked to testify" at the Emergencies Act inquiry, so he won't. What's worse for Ford: the optics of avoidance or going on the record? Furthermore, does the average Canadian even care about these proceedings?
Environment Canada walked back an air quality warning citing Diwali fireworks...but did they have to? If it's true, why not own it? Bigger picture: are the days of fireworks and fighter jet fly-overs numbered?

Now that its CEO and board have stepped down, what's the next step for Hockey Canada? How does the organization even begin to address the rot impacting the culture around our nation's favourite sport? Is the average Canadian prepared to have the tough conversations, some of which could hit close to home?
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre says he had no idea members of his team were using the controversial "MGTOW" tag on his YouTube videos...and he's probably telling the truth. But that's not the point. Public dialogue around this revelation seems to be missing the mark. Why should the average person care about the inner workings of platforms like YouTube? This story matters more than you might realize.
It didn't take long for newly-minted Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to step in one, claiming unvaccinated citizens are "the most discriminated-against group (she's) ever witnessed in (her) lifetime". We have to assume she'll dial back comments like that to preserve her chances of winning the general election in May 2023...right?

Pierre Poilievre spoke out this week after a group led by Diagolon founder Jeremy Mackenzie joked about sexually assaulting the Conservative leader's wife. What took Poilievre so long to see the light re: this group of "dirtbags" and "losers" (Pierre's words, not ours)? Why didn't he take their inflammatory statements and threats seriously before it got personal? Will this change the tone of CPC messaging moving forward?
As of October 1, travellers in Canada won't be required to wear masks on planes and trains. The Prime Minister says his government will "continue to follow the science," but are they? If it's a move based on public sentiment (polling), why not just say so?
"How come (the carbon tax) didn't prevent Hurricane Fiona?" That from Saskatchewan MP Rosemarie Falk, who gives us a LOT to work with.Let us know what you think about what you're hearing on the show! Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was "caught" on camera, singing Queen in a hotel lobby a couple days before Queen Elizabeth II's funeral. Is the anger around this story founded on anything rational? Do his critics have a point?
American President Joe Biden declares, "The pandemic is over." Is it? What sort of impact does a statement like this have, coming from the most powerful person on the planet?
Olympic gold medalist and former national sporting icon Jamie Sale appears to have officially lost the plot (if you follow her on social media, you know). Alberta cabinet minister Kaycee Madu praises law-breaking border blockers. What the hell is going on with influential people who should know better?

A resounding win for new Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who's already putting his stamp all over the party. Unconventional talking points about affordable housing, a spat with national political correspondent David Akin: what can we glean from Poilievre's first few days in the role?
Plus, Senator Lindsey Graham wants to ban abortions after 15 weeks. The announcement, just two months out from midterm elections, is being described as a declaration of Civil War within the GOP. What good could possibly come out of this for the Republican Party?

A nation is in shock following a stabbing spree in central Saskatchewan. Supriya and Ryan open this week's show reflecting on some of the longer-term implications of this horrific tragedy.
Summer's over for the most part (sorry). That means political parties are buckling up for a new session. How will the new-look Conservatives roll out under Pierre Poilievre (we presume)? How will the governing Liberals navigate a more abrasive, biting Opposition leader?
US President Joe Biden drew criticism for taking a "pro-democracy" stance in a recent speech. How many red flags should we be waving? Could (or is) Canada be traveling down that same path, where an unwavering commitment to democratic principles is no longer a given?
And, in an effort to steal support from perceived frontrunner Danielle Smith, UCP leadership hopeful Brian Jean promises no mandatory vaccines in Alberta if he's elected Premier. What percentage of the general population could possibly support such an anti-science stance?

You can feel Elliot McDavid's anger as he storms toward Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland in the lobby of Grande Prairie City Hall. By now, everybody's seen the video of the Alberta man demanding the Liberal finance minister "get the fuck out of Alberta," but what do we plan to do about it? How did we get to this point of rage-driven politics, and how do we get out of it?
Why are Canadians so angry, anyway? Are we more angsty than we were even a few years ago? What does this mean for discourse moving forward? Where do politicians and media need to take this trend? Is it even possible to build bridges anymore?Plus, comedian Chris Rock was doing so well in managing The Slap Heard 'Round the World. Up until recently, that is. That story's in this week's edition of "Seriously?!"

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spells it out - they want Canada's green hydrogen. What does that mean for pipeline conversations in Canada? And how much longer can Quebec simply say "no" to a project clearly in the national economic interest?
Veteran news anchor Lisa LaFlamme is unceremoniously dismissed as CTV's national anchor: who cooked up the corporate strategy on this one? How could any reasonably intelligent executive think it'd be wise to shuffle her off to the gallows in such callous fashion?
Republican Elise Stefanik "demands" Canada lose its ArriveCAN app. We've got a few demands for our southern neighbours, too...

The FBI executes a no-knock warrant at the Florida home of former President Donald Trump: what does the bigger-picture story mean for Canadians? Where is America headed (again?), and how will that impact its northern neighbour?
Journalists Rachel Gilmore, Erica Ifill, and Saba Eitizaz have gone public with some of the hateful, threatening messages they receive. When are media companies, police, and the public going to take this seriously...and what would that look like?Plus, if Ontario's health minister says there's no health care crisis, does that make it true?We want to know how you feel about the stories we're tackling. Health care is at a crisis point across the country. Toronto General is under a critical care bed alert. A senior citizen in Victoria took out a newspaper ad, desperate to fill her husband's prescription. So, why does nobody have the appetite or ability to fix this mess? Plus, the final CPC leadership debate will be short a couple key players. Are Pierre Poilievre and Dr. Leslyn Lewis onto something? We wrap with a look at a PEI brewpub that paid the price for hosting the PM for lunch.
