Hi, I'm Emma – your host of the Turning Readers Into Writers podcast.
Have you ever asked yourself, "How can I find the time to write when I am already so busy? How can I write my first novel when I have no confidence in my writing? How do I even write a book, anyway?"
Then you're in the right place!
Beginner writers dream of finishing their first novel and either getting an agent or publishing independently. Either way, they hold a vision seeing their book in print.
But they are overwhelmed at the thought of writing so many words and crafting an engaging story with characters their readers care about. In this podcast, I take you right back to basics and look at all the ways you can find time to write and build your confidence.
Along the way, we'll delve into the practical elements of story structure and writing great characters, as well as the tools and techniques you can use to keep yourself motivated when the going gets tough. With my 3 Step approach (schedule, write, analyse), I deliver content to help you say no to procrastination and yes to creation. I have turned my own writing from snippets on my computer to fully-formed published novels that are out there in the world for readers to enjoy. Let me show you how to do the same. Remember, you don't need to know it all you just need to get started.
Join me every Thursday for new episodes on how you can go from Reader to Writer. -
One of the greatest English tragic novels, TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES (1891) is the story of a “pure woman” who is victimized both by conventional morality and its antithesis. Born near Dorchester, Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) set most of his stories in the region between Berkshire and Dorset in the fictional county of Wessex. He was a controversial writer whose work often showed the result of flouting the rigid Victorian moral code — his novel JUDE THE OBSCURE was (allegedly) burned by the Bishop of Wakefield for its shocking content. Hardy was an unflinching observer and in TESS has left us some unforgettable vignettes of rural life in late 19th-century England: the slow death of a flock of wounded pheasants, the monotony of field labour under an iron gray sky, and the itinerant farm worker’s seasonal round.

The Wonderland Challenge 2: Alice Through The Looking Glass Audiobook with 174 actors in aid of Cancer Research UK
Hello, I’m Brad Shaw, voice actor and founder of VO training community Wonderland VO.
At the beginning of the first lock down, I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma and had to undergo a year of immunotherapy. Just as I was getting over that, I got prostate cancer and had an operation just over a year ago. Then more recently, I heard that the stage 3 melanoma had returned and so I had had an operation in July at The Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in London to remove lymph nodes from under my arm. I’m eternally grateful to the amazing doctors, nurses and surgeons who treated me.
During that first lockdown I created The Wonderland Challenge, where 159 voiceovers and celebrities each recorded a minute of Alice in Wonderland and donated to the NHS.
I feel the time is right for The Wonderland Challenge 2: Alice Through The Looking Glass this time in aid of Cancer Research. So I split the book down into 175 one minute chunks and again put this out to the voiceover community. As well as recording their minute, I asked each voice actor to donate at least £10 to Cancer Research UK. I was overwhelmed with the response. Within days I filled all the slots and the donations started to come in.
You can read some of their heart breaking stories on the project page at www.wonderlandvo.com/challenge.
Amongst the 174 gorgeous voices in this production are Phyllis Logan (Mrs Hughes from Downton Abbey), Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean), actor Henry Goodman, Rosemary Ashe (the original Carlotta in Phantom) and a range of the finest award winning voice actors.
I then spent several days editing all the pieces together and here it is. Lewis Carroll’s wonderful tale of Alice Through The Looking Glass.
So far, I’ve raised more than £4600 but with your help we can raise a lot more. If you have friends or family affected by cancer or if you listen to the book, PLEASE donate to Cancer Research UK here: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/brads-giving-page-62
Enjoy!
