  • Women often bear the brunt of mental and physical labor in the home, putting others' needs ahead of their own, but by ensuring that even just 15 minutes of each day is focused on self-care, Coach Robin Rutledge-Taylor believes women can join together to take back their lives and begin to thrive.

Coach Robin has been a GirlTrek Crew Leader since 2012. She also runs her own wellness business and holds certifications with both NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership Schools) and the Sierra Club. She's been a fitness enthusiast and professional in the wellness space since 1989. On today's episode, Robin talks to us about the many hats she wears, the importance of self-care, and what it has meant to her to be a leader within the GirlTrek movement. She tells us about her most memorable walk, a wilderness backpacking trip on which she was the only Black person, and why this walk led her to realize how strong she really was. And finally, she shares why it is so important that women show up for themselves — and for each other.

  • Shawn Eckert's journey started with a single step that transformed his whole life. After years of struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, Shawn weighed 446 lbs. After his doctor warned him that he would die early if he continued the path he was on, he made a commitment to improving his health so he could be there for his family and for himself. His first steps were painful and challenging but after only one week of daily walking, he felt empowered by the dramatic physical and mental changes that were taking shape. Over time, walking became the activity he relied on to keep his mind clear and happy.

During our conversation, Shawn shares his journey with walking and how it impacted his relationships with his family and improved his mental health. He also experienced an incredible physical transformation, including the complete loss of the foot and heel pain he'd been struggling with and an overall weight loss of nearly 200 lbs. Shawn is now an ultrarunner who recently finished a 100-mile race. He credits walking for helping him stay motivated during both running and everyday life.

  • Author Annabel Streets wants us all to find more opportunities to walk. After hearing her friends and family make excuses to skip their walks, Annabel set out on a mission to share research on the benefits of different kinds of walks — and to inspire people to break out of their walking ruts.

In "52 Ways To Walk," Annabel shares 52 ideas for how to shake up your walking routine, all backed by science. We were excited to hear her tips for making walking fun and more interesting — like how to enjoy and soak up the benefits of walking backwards or the scientific reasons why you should venture out in the pouring rain (hint: it has to do with negative air ions)! This is a great episode to listen to if you or someone you know keeps coming up with excuses not to go on a walk, if you're looking for reasons to start a walking habit, or if you need some tips on how to get out of a walking rut.

  • What started during the pandemic as Mia Lind's personal mindfulness and gratitude activity has now become a viral trend with over a half a billion views and millions of women taking part. The #HotGirlWalk has one rule: you can only think about three things, 1. what you're grateful for, 2. your goals, and finally, 3. how hot you are (hint: this isn't about looks — it's about how you feel). We wanted to find out even more about the Hot Girl Walk so we asked Mia, creator of the movement, to share the story behind the walk and how going on regular #HotGirlWalks has helped her and countless other women boost their mental and physical health. We also dug into why her rebranding of walking is important for building self-confidence, fostering relationships, and prioritizing mental health.

  • On today's episode, we sit down with Rory Fuerst Jr., the Global Product Innovation Director at KEEN Footwear. After suffering a traumatic knee injury during a ski accident, Rory's high-speed life ground to a halt. He went from working as hard as he played, to living in a fog of pain meds and PT appointments. The day he was cleared to walk again, his entire view on walking, and on the world, changed. He began to notice the beauty in the little things he was used to seeing every day, and to connect more with nature and his community. It was through this process of slowing down that he rediscovered the power of walking.

This sparked the idea to create an innovative shoe designed specifically for walking, the WK400. After years of research, Rory and a team of researchers and designers developed a shoe that takes the natural way people walk (on a constant curve) and harnesses that power to make walking more fun. Rory's goal is to make walking more fun so more people are inspired to get outside and experience the power of walking.

  • We couldn't think of anyone who would be better suited for the very first episode of our Solve By Walking Podcast than GirlTrek cofounders, Morgan Dixon and Vanessa Garrison. Through national campaigns, community leadership, and health advocacy, Vanessa and Morgan mobilize Black women to be changemakers in their communities and personal lives — simply by walking together. GirlTrek is a movement of over 1.3 millon Black women who walk and talk together for better health, to heal trauma, and to transform their lives and their communities. We talk about their mission, their movement, the act of radical self-care, and uncover ways that listeners can join in or become allies of GirlTrek.
