  • Overlord is a 2018 movie I adore and watch over and over! It is one of the best War/Horror films I’ve ever seen, possibly underrated. I rarely see discussions or reviews about this film on Horror sites or mentioned on Horror podcasts. This is a shame because it is so well-crafted, acted, and the set design and practical FX are a wonder to behold that blend with beautiful use of CGI!

    Plot:

On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers drop behind enemy lines to penetrate the walls of a fortified church and destroy a radio transmitter. As the soldiers approach their target, the outnumbered men stumble upon a sinister experiment that forces them into a vicious battle against an army of the undead.

  • Staying with my desire to keep things fresh, in this episode, I am focusing on all things ZOMBIE! Now, not all of these films are Gothic films, but all of them feature Gothic Tropes in some shape or way. I am not going to cover Zombie TV or streaming shows like The Walking Dead franchise, because I have only seen the first few seasons and none of the spin-off shows. I will leave that to more qualified Zombie enthusiasts!

This is just MY take on Zombie Movies that are worth watching.

  • In this episode, I talk about my all-time favorite Gothic Horror film…The Wolfman (2010)! Werewolves are my favorite monster and this film ranks up there with An American Werewolf In London! Which is high praise. I also mention the novelization written by Jonathan Maberry, which was based on the screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self, and the Original screenplay by Curt Siodmak!

Directed by Joe Johnston, and once again starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Benicio del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving. Werewolves are my favorite film monsters, and this film is exactly what I want in a fantastic Gothic Horror film! Perfection!

  • Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Cary Elwes, and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

    Description

Count Dracula, a 15th-century prince, is condemned to live off the blood of the living for eternity. Young lawyer Jonathan Harker is sent to Dracula's castle to finalize a land deal, but when the Count sees a photo of Harker's fiancée, Mina, the spitting image of his dead wife, he imprisons him and sets off for London to track her down.

This is my favorite interpretation of the novel by far, elevated I think, by the institution of the love story between Dracula and Mina. This was the creation of Francis Ford Coppola, the director, and James V. Hart, the screenwriter.

It is the perfect marriage between Gothic Horror and Gothic Romance!

  • Set in 1799, "Sleepy Hollow" is based on Washington Irving's classic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Faithful to the dreamy custom-bound world that Irving paints in his story, the film mixes horror, fantasy, and romance and features an extraordinary cast of characters that dabble in the supernatural.

Probably my favorite Tim Burton film! I love his Batman films, but this one is pure Gothic through and through! The world-building is incredible in this!

I also mention the Sleepy Hollow TV series (2013 - 2017). Seasons 1 and 2 were pretty dope!

  • This bloody vampire movie is the very definition of Gothic Horror!

30 Days of Night is an adaptation of the fabulous graphic novel of the same name. If you like vampires that are brutal and feral, watch this movie!

It is bleak and relentless but also retains themes of hope and light amidst the darkness. Even though the world around us is often dark and bleak, holding on to love and light may be all we have.

  • Today, I talk about the recent Netflix movie The Pale Blue Eye! The film is directed by Scott Cooper and stars Christian Bale as August Landor, Harry Melling as Edgar Allan Poe, Lucy Boyton, Gillian Anderson, and Timothy Spall. What I love about this film is how it embraces the Gothic Aesthetic in every aspect.

If you love Gothic atmosphere and characters, watch this film! Harry Melling as Edgar Allan Poe is spellbinding and compelling. For fans of the Godfather of the Gothic, you will be pleased with this interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe!

  • In this episode, I dive into two of my favorite films from the 1980s: Reanimator & Fright Night, both from 1985.

    Reanimator (1985)

Directed by Stuart Gordon and produced by Brian Yuzna. Starring Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, and Bruce Abbot. Based on an H.P. Lovecraft novelette. It is baffling, fantastic, bloody, and freaking awesome!

    Fright Night (1985)

Directed by Tom Holland (who directed the first Child’s Play film, introducing us to Horror-icon: Chucky!). Starring William Ragsdale, Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall, Amanda Bearse, and Stephen Geoffreys. I mean…do have I to say anymore? Classic.

They are VERY different movies, but both have the Gothic aesthetic seeping from their pores!

  • This is an excerpt from one of my Gothic novellas about a character named Tambora. This is my own version and extension of the Frankenstein story where I posit that the mad scientist created many iterations of reanimated beings.

In this part, Tambora is rescued and welcomed into an Inuit Community nestled at the edge of the world.

As he tries to understand their ways, tragedy strikes!
