Are you ready to hear from a comic book enthusiast who's been on the front lines of conventions and cosplay? Our intriguing guest peels back the pages of her life-long love for comics, anime, and cosplay - a journey that started with her family's history of collecting comic books. She unravels her personal experiences at conventions and grappling with race-bending characters, emphasizing the importance of respectful representation for characters of color.
We also crack open the sometimes murky world of representation for black people in the realms of comics and anime. We analyze the characters of Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, Starfire, and Naomi, asking the hard-hitting question - are they truly advancing the industry or merely ticking boxes? We don't shy away from discussing the lack of sustainability for characters of color and the potential for change through upcoming titles featuring black and indigenous characters. Tune in as we also explore how the power of social media can be harnessed to educate about the rich history of black characters in comics. Get ready to embark on a deep exploration of the world of comics and anime!

Have you ever contemplated the power of comics? How they've been used throughout centuries to narrate potent political messages, shape societal beliefs, and even question the norm? We bring you an episode that will make you see comics in a different light. From our electrifying panel experience at Galaxy Con Rally to the analysis of the first comic strip created in the 1700s, we unravel the complexity and depth of comics. We also invite you, our listeners, to share your thoughts and questions ignited by our discussion.
We have an honest conversation about the vital issue of representation in comics and wider society. The impact of recent legislation, Supreme Court decisions, and their potential to erase history and reverse progress is alarming. We discuss such instances as the controversy surrounding Chadwick Boseman’s covered face in the Asian release of Black Panther. The narrative of how comics can serve as a medium of self-expression and celebration, particularly for children, wraps up this part.
The topic of race-swapping in pop culture is a contentious one. We delve into representations of darker-skinned characters in historical art pieces and the implications of race-swaps today. Representation in media and comics has the potential to shape societal beliefs and opinions. We touch on the Bud Light controversy and the impact of actor strikes, illustrating the power of storytelling. The episode concludes with a deep look into diversity in X-Men comics, the upcoming Blue Beetle series, and how the 'otherness' phenomenon unites people against a common adversary. Tune in for an insightful, enlightening, and thought-provoking conversation.Support the Show.

Ever wondered what a superhero movie could teach us about real-world politics? Strap in, because we're venturing into an intriguing intersection of pop culture and politics, with DC's The Flash as our cinematic pivot point. This episode will unravel intriguing parallels between Barry Allen's timeline alterations and the current attempts to rewrite history within the US government, as we navigate the depths of the Flashpoint Theory and discuss Ezra Miller's stellar performance.
We're not stopping at superheroes, though. This conversation also digs into the critical issue of affirmative action laws in the United States—originally designed to uplift minorities but later colonized and co-opted. We'll dissect how these mechanisms, tainted by white privilege and racial advantage, inadvertently contribute to societal resegregation and could be hindering the progress of diversity. And if that's not enough, we'll also shed light on the power of voting and its capacity to effect real-world change. So, are you ready to connect the world of superheroes with the hard-hitting realities of politics and societal norms?

Have you ever considered the connection between superhero politics and real-world power dynamics? Join us for a captivating conversation with comic book enthusiast and political science major, Joshua Drumming, as we unravel the politics of superheroes and their reflection on our views of justice and morality. Joshua enlightens us on the presence of white supremacy in juvenile mediums and how neoliberal policies exacerbate its effects.
Together, we examine the implications of American-centric messages in superhero stories, focusing on how Superman often represents the United States. We discuss the idea of wealth and power as superpowers and the way they contribute to feelings of powerlessness. Throughout our conversation, we explore the shift from 'Truth, Justice, and the American Way' to a less America-centric message, and the importance of speaking truth to power in today's confused America.
Lastly, we dive into the impact of critical race theory on black history and culture, discussing the erasure of African American contributions due to white cultural imperialism. This episode is an eye-opening exploration of the intersection of comic books, politics, and social issues. Join us and learn how we can use our power to make a difference in the world and become the heroes we are meant to be.

Happy New Year! We're glad to be back and can't wait to get started. In this episode we will be discussing vision. Not Wanda's Vision, or Superman's vision, but James Gunn's vision for the DCEU. It looks a mess right now, and maybe he'll have to hold them at Gunn point to fix it! See what I did there? But the DCEU is not the only entity looking a mess right now. The Republican Party is in shambles. We'll discuss if either of these institutions can be fixed and if their new leaders are the one to right the ship before it sinks.

We'll try to understand the understandable and delve into the role that religion plays in both the world of politics and comics. Does God use man or does man use God? What's a mob to a King? “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. -Martin Luther King Jr.
In this episode we will discuss the interpretation, application and dispensation of justice in America. The cases of Kyle Rittenhouse, the murderers on Ahmaud Arbery, and the continuation of the saga of January 6th have left many feeling that justice is not only blind, but deaf, unable to hear the cries of those who need her the most. How far are willing to go to see justice served? What is the line between, justice and authoritarianism? How can we respect the system, when the system doesn't respect us?
What if you had the power to make your own justice? What would you do? We witness when one man with all the power in the world is pushed to the brink and becomes his own justice. No one man should have all this power....

In this episode we take on how variant versions of information are causing problems with our ability to maintain and control reality. All this just as the Delta variant of Covid -19 takes hold.
Will we need to form our own TVA to combat the mutated strains of news about the virus and the vaccine, or can we prune them just in time to save ourselves from lockdown purgatory?

The role of reality warpers in comics has been as heroes and villains'. Beings with the power to bend the very cosmos to their will are a constant threat to all we know. While those that seek to bend reality in the real world wield microphones and gavels and not Infinity Gauntlets, they are no less able to make us doubt all that we know. In this episode we will take on the blatant attempts to remake our history, alter our present and control the future of our democracy as we know it.

Look up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's a black dude? Superman is the worlds greatest superhero and has been for 75 years. Now as the world of comic book authors, artists and producers becomes as diverse and reflective of the world we live in, is it time to reimagine the Man of Steel? In this episode we talk about the politics of inclusion and how diversity has affected even fictional societies. Does the S mean the same thing if it is not worn on the chest of a white guy from Kansas? Can we accept Kara/Supergirl if she's from Brazil? Are we really making progress on inclusion, or are we practicing tokenism? All questions that we ask and answer in this episode....

There are few words in comic books that evoke the level of power that SHAZAM does. Imagine being able to say a single word and transform a life r empower and depower others. While SHAZAM bestows Billy Batson the power of a pantheon of Gods, the word Nigga/Nigger carries a very different kind of power. In this episode we will explore the awesome power of words in both comics and politics and those who wield them!

The final blow has been struck and the villain falls.. But is the battle truly over? The one thing that comics teaches us that no hero or villain is ever really gone. Politics loves a comeback story and while republicans treat to recoup their losses, they know that any misstep by the Biden administration can be their portal back to the halls of power. But what of Trumpism? Is it truly vanquished? That remains to be seen. But for now the country celebrates and hope is in the air. Peace has returned, but for how long?
