Today I’m talking nerdy with Jan-Willem van der Heiden about how to navigate the duality of fear and love as motivators in most of our choices and decisions. In this conversation we’re diving into how the ego constructs fear in an effort to keep us safe, why that fear isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but can get in the way of living more authentic lives, how to begin creating safety in order self-regulate and co-regulate,and one of the most easy to understand and simple explanations of trauma and how to move through it that I’ve ever heard.
Jan-Willem van der Heiden is currently living in Bali after getting stuck there during the pandemic. Seeing the situation as an opportunity he dove deep into working on his own limiting beliefs, shadows and vices. Now he uses all the tools he learned in combination with years of martial arts to guide people into finding their own power: the power to fulfill their deepest desires.
Not only is Jan an incredible coach, but he is also currently my coach and the person that has been deeply supporting me in moving through one of the most painful places of uncertainty in my own life. This conversation gets extremely personal and vulnerable on my part and Jans. Sensitive listeners should be advised that this conversation will touch on topics like physical and sexual abuse.

Today I’m talking nerdy with Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson about the neuroscience and psychology of eating, food addiction, and weight. In this conversation we’re diving into what is happening in our brain’s when we eat, what is happening when we have complicated or addictive relationships with food, the risks of relying on willpower alone to change habits and patterns, what to do instead, what formulates our body image, and some first steps you can take start changing your relationship with yours.
I have to say this conversation was one of the most surprising ones I’ve had on the podcast so far both in terms of how freaking fascinating the science is that Dr. Susan shared her incredible personal story, and the emotional and spiritual depth.
Susan Peirce Thompson, PhD is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester, a multiple New York Times bestselling author, and an expert in the psychology of eating. Today we’re talking nerdy with Alex’s favorite neuroscientist of all time, the author of her favorite neuroscience books, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor.
In this episode, Dr. Jill and Alex will talk nerdy about some of the major distinctions between the right and left brain hemispheres, how learning how to selectively access either hemisphere can make a major impact on the way you move through your day or your life, how the human brain is designed in such a way that we are at our core feeling beings who think NOT thinking beings who feel, the miracle and magic of our own cellular biology, and how neuroscience can answer some of the bigger questions we have about life such as what we as human beings are here to do.
If you’ve never heard of Dr. Jill, you are in for such a treat. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Harvard trained and published neuroanatomist who is now affiliated with the Indiana University School of Medicine. In 1996 she experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain causing her to lose the ability to walk, talk, read, write or recall any of her life. Her memoir, My Stroke of Insight, documenting her experience with stroke and eight-year recovery spent 63 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list. Her most recent 2021 book is WHOLE BRAIN LIVING: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life.
Dr. Taylor loves educating everyone about the beauty and resiliency of our human brain, and how we can live a more peaceful and satisfying life. In 2008 she gave the first TED talk that ever went viral on the Internet, which now has well over 29 million views. Also in 2008, Dr. Taylor was chosen as one of TIME Magazine's “100 Most Influential People in the World” and was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey’s “Soul Series” web-cast.

In this episode we’re diving into the societal and cultural messages men receive about what masculinity is, how many of these messages are unsupportive, restrictive, and negatively impact men's mental health, and how men can begin to redefine their experience of masculinity with themselves and their partners to create a space for greater safety and freedom of expression within their romantic and platonic relationships.
A little trigger warning before we begin that this conversation includes some touchy topics like sex, masturbation, and polarity. Sensitive listeners should be advised and open minds are always encouraged.
Ryan Miller is the Host of IGNITE U podcast where he bridges the worlds of play & performance. His education is in Somatics, Breathwork, Embodied Tantra, Animal Flow, and all things having to do with the body, and its full expression. Today I’m talking nerdy with Professor Russell Foster about the neuroscience of circadian rhythm. In this conversation we’re diving into the relationship between light and your body clock, how your body transforms light information into electrochemical information, why melatonin is NOT the driver of sleep, the impact of circadian rhythm disruption on physical, mental, and emotional health, and some of Russell’s evidence-based recommendations to reset your own body clock.
Professor Russell Foster is the Head of Oxford’s Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology, the founder and Director of the Sleep and Circadian Research Institute. His research addresses how circadian rhythms and sleep are generated and regulated and what happens when these systems fail because of societal pressures, ageing and disease. A key finding has been his discovery and characterisation of an unrecognised light-detecting system within the eye that regulates circadian rhythms and sleep. Professor Foster has published over 300 scientific papers and has received multiple national and international awards, including most recently the “Daylight Prize”. He has co-written four popular science books and his fifth with Penguin entitled Life Time was published in May 2022 and is a best-seller in both hard-and paperback. He is currently working on a new book about the role of light on the biology of humans, other animals and plants.

Today I’m talking nerdy with Victoria Lutzhoft about money, sex, and why shame prevents us from having vulnerable, uncomfortable, and deeply healing conversations about them. In this episode we’re diving into the value of healing and being witnessed in community, where shame exists in the brain, how it inhibits our behavior, what is required to create a safe space for outing yourself, and how to begin having conversations about sex and money that ultimately lead to experiencing greater freedom in both of those facets of life.
Victoria Lutzhoft is a human being, mother, sister, wife, seeker, community builder, and coach. She set off on a personal discovery path in 2016 after dead-ending in jobs, stuck in a loop of overeating and drinking and never feeling fully satisfied with life. Victoria has traveled both internally and externally to find home. That has enabled her to move from disempowered, numbing and easily overwhelmed with life to more aligned, able to express herself fully and determined to follow her desire. Whether it’s a coach training program, emotional intelligence school, breath work or reiki the basis of everything Vic does and teaches is about learning to feel her feelings and let her feminine lead. Married to a (great) Dane, Vic resides in Copenhagen, Denmark with her husband and daughter Emma.

In this conversation, we’re diving into what’s happening in your brain when you set goals, what gets in the way of actually achieving them, how to follow through when the initial burst of motivating fades, and how you can leverage neuroscience to set realistic goals that actually stick and that you are more equipped to follow through on.
Dr. Alex Korb is a neuroscientist, coach, and bestselling author of The Upward Spiral. Dr. Korb has PhD in neuroscience and is an adjunct assistant professor at UCLA. He is also the founder of The Upward Spiral Method where he helps purpose-driven entrepreneurs and professionals conquer unnecessary overthinking, stress, and self-doubt. Today I’m talking nerdy with Dan Carter again and this time we’re diving into the neurophysiology of pain: physical, mental, and emotional. This episode is less of a conversation and more of a masterclass where Dan will teach you about the biopsychosocial factors that influence pain, how our nervous systems and stress perceive pain, the relationship between pain, stress, and trauma, and most importantly how to manage our levels of pain physically and psychologically.
The last conversation that I had with Dan on Talk Nerdy To Me was about the ripple effects of childhood trauma and this one is a continuation of that in some regards. Because this episode will dive into trauma related concepts, sensitive listeners should be advised.
Dan Carter has been coaching for 13 years while also running regular education workshops and programs for gyms, studios, personal trainers, and allied health professionals in the areas of strength, functional movement, mindset and nutrition. He has created and facilitated professional development workshops to gyms all over Australia, as well as learning and sharing with industry leaders across the globe. Dan is the founder and Head Coach of Revamp Integrated Health, specializing in combining traditional wisdom with a personalized, evidence-informed approach across the pillars of movement, insight, and nutrition to help you find the capacity to reconnect with and express your authentic self.

Chrissy Constable is a yoga teacher, body reader, and gut fanatic. Chrissy has always been fascinated with the inner workings of the body and how diet, movement, and breath can improve your mental and physical health. Her goal is to find and teach emotional, mental, and physical alignment through yoga asana, diet, and guided self discovery, to improve the quality and increase longevity of life.
