She recently gave a powerful TEDx talk about women in sports called, “Unleashing Female Potential”.

The work she is doing is giving coaches what they need to create team culture that is firm, fair, and fun. From corporate leadership to team culture, Emma’s work teaches practical skills that you can take back to your team. Here are some topics we cover:

Skills to help Inter-generational teams communicate betterHow to empower your team to problem solveSimple communication tips to create a culture curiosity Why “Why” questions don’t work, and how to ask better questions as a coachHow to tap into motivation through play and gamification.

This episode has so much in it. I was scribbling notes the whole time. So, grab your notebook, sit back, and enjoy this chat with Coach Emma Doyle.

    5 Ways People Play Games

PVP - Player vs player - Create a competitionPuzzles - Encourage them to solve the puzzleNarrative - Create a story or journey around it.Collectors - Find a way to move up levels or collect pointsSocial - Social pressure to belong to a community

Here’s a glance at this episode:

[2:44] Coach Emma describes what her TEDx talk is all about, and outlines the power of the phrase, “next time”. She goes on to explain the importance of age diversity in the workplace.

[5:26] Lindsey asks, “What are some things you want clients to get out of your workshops?” Emma talks about leaders as coaches, how be curious with those you lead, and learning through play.

[8:20] Emma reflects on the moment she realized she needed to adapt her teaching style to coach tough-to-reach athletes. Lindsey asks about how coaches can personalize their coaching while keeping high standards.

[12:40] “Get the buy in!” Emma urges coaches to define core values with their team. Lindsey applies these ideas to parenting. Emma explains the practical step-by-step process of voting on core values and how to ‘gamify’ the experience.

[19:19] Emma defines the “5 Ways People Play Games”. She explains, “It’s the difference between pushing your map of the world onto somebody vs pulling out that which lives within them.”[23:28] The key is performing with pressure, not performing under pressure. This is the next level of coaching. Emma is concerned for coaches who don’t have the tools to help athletes strengthen their inner voice.

[26:06] Lindsey believes coaches have a resistance to change because change is hard in the beginning. Emma offers her perspective on coach burnout, empowering athletes, and the “power of the pause”.

[30:39] Lindsey asks Emma to share one simple tool for coaches and leaders. Emma teaches her “anchoring” technique [hint: It’s a lot like a tool WE teach!]

[33:55] Emma believes coaches need to ask better questions. She explains the truth about ‘why’ questions and shares some alternatives that will encourage better responses.

This is something I hear from so many of my students who are mothers. Many of you want to get into this field because of your kids. And as a mom of four young kids, I get it. I really get it. You are constantly trying to balance your ambitions and desires with those of your family.

But I think it’s usually so much deeper than that.

Money, purpose, contribution, and value can be sensitive topics, especially for moms. So today, I want to create space to talk about what YOU want. And really get into the taboo conversation of women, money, and power.

  • My guest today is my friend and PPT community favorite, Betsy Butterick! Betsy is a lifelong athlete who played college basketball, a coach, and communication specialist. She is known in the industry as “The Coaches’ Coach”, mentoring leaders - from the boardroom to the locker room. Betsy has committed her life to helping leaders learn essential communication skills to help them better connect with the people they serve. As a communications expert and a generous teacher, she deeply understands the sociology of sports teams, and the importance of creating an optimal sports environment. More than anything, Betsy is committed to the lifelong practice of learning. If you are a coach, a leader, a parent, or around humans in general, you can learn something from Betsy.

In our episode today, we chat about one of the most relevant topics in today’s sports landscape: Coaching Gen Z!

    We cover:

How to get athletes to buy-in and co-create their sports environmentThe challenges Gen Z faces that older generations did not.Modern coaching challenges that are causing coaches to leave their careersSimple tips to communicate with Gen Z, without sacrificing “old school values”.How psychological safety on a team impacts performance. Why strong-arming Gen Z athletes won’t work, and what to do instead

This episode gives coaches a new perspective and actionable tips to help them connect with their team in a way that makes the coach-athlete relationship and the team stronger.

    Follow Betsy:

Here’s a glance at this episode:

[1:42] Betsy talks about how catching up on reading led her to one of her newest favorite resources, “The Art of Disagreement”. She then defines ”Gen Z”.

[2:50] Betsy asks coaches to finish the sentence, “Kids these days are
“ and explains what that helps her discover about a team. Lindsey and Betsy discuss the few defining challenges that Gen Z has that older generations didn’t have.

[6:33] How can I get Gen Z to listen to me? Why do they seem to care so much about what other people think of them? Betsy shares her perspective and explains the extreme way in which Gen Z internalizes failure. Rather than - “I failed”, it’s - “I am a failure”.

[9:46] Betsy shares an example of one big mistake she sees many coaches making when it comes to giving feedback to Gen Z athletes. Lindsey and Betsy discuss why many lifelong coaches are now leaving their careers because what they’re doing is no longer working with this generation.

[14:54] “It’s not that old school values are irrelevant, I would argue they’re more needed than ever. Our ability to connect with athletes today is paramount to our ability to transform them.”

[16:56] Lindsey asks Betsy for a few actionable tips to give coaches who work with Gen Z. Betsy chats about the importance of co-creation and defines what that looks like.

[21:00] Lindsey draws a parallel between the best practices for coaching Gen Z and the way she approaches parenting.

[22:50] Betsy tells a story about working with a coach who had a sign saying “Because I Said So” mounted to the wall.

[26:46] Betsy outlines the huge risk to coaches who want to strongarm their way into coaching athletes their way. The two discuss the importance of “psychological safety” in sports.

[28:28] How has the attention span of Gen Z shifted, and what can we do as educators to meet them where they’re at? Lindsey talks about the importance of practicing what you preach.

[32:56] Betsy peels back the curtain to share the highlights and structure of her Gen Z workshops.

[35:28] Betsy talks about her new workshop, “Updates from the Field, Coaching Gen Z in an Optimal Sport Experience” - based on the last 5 years of conversations she had with Gen Z athletes, and why it has become the most requested keynote.

  • Critiquing vs. criticizing your performance is an essential part of getting better at ANYTHING. But as athletes, so many of us are really hard on ourselves, and with that comes a huge resistance to really looking at ourselves. For me, watching film was excruciating, I did it anyway, but I was relentlessly hard on myself. In today's episode, I'll share how you can create a system of critiquing without judgement. These are the same high standards that fuel late workouts, final sprints to the finish, and fierce competitiveness. But the dark side of high standards is often shame. Shame when you miss a shot, don't make the starting lineup, or let down the team. But what if it didn't have to be this way? What if you could have high standards without shame? • Episode Bio

Stacey Dales has an impressive sports resume, playing for the Canadian National Team in the Olympics and earning all-american status at Oklahoma. Collecting so many awards along the way, she was drafted 3rd into the WNBA, and went on to expand her repertoire as a reporter for ESPN. This all-around powerhouse is currently killing it as a reporter for NFL network.

In addition to her iconic career in sports, Stacey leads with humor and kindness (I’ll give her a pass for a little gametime trashtalk). Although we met as opponents, I have always looked up to Stacey. She’s had her eye on the prize since I’ve known her and bleeds integrity into everything she does, making her an inspiration to myself and so many others. As a prominent sports reporter, this woman is paving the way for future generations of female game players and reporters, and I truly can’t think of a better role model.

From start to finish, Stacey’s interview is full of tough-love nuggets of wisdom, honest reflections, and refreshing humility. To have the opportunity to turn the tables on an expert interviewer and put her in the hotseat was an absolute pleasure.

You can follow Stacey on IG @staceydales and watch her kick butt as a reporter for the NFL Network!

Here’s a glance at this episode:

[3:08] Lindsey introduces Stacey Dales, former Olympian and current sideline reporter for the NFL

[8:04] “I believe that champions are made when nobody’s watching” and “confidence comes from demonstrated ability”. Stacey shares what both of these phrases mean to her and how her mindset training as an athlete informs her career today.

[10:18] Stacey describes how she’s learned to embrace fear and shares her process for preparing her mind for high pressure assignments.

[13:30] What’s an NFL reporter’s mental training routine like? From physical workouts, to memory hacks, and an intricate storytelling ritual, Stacey lets us in on her secrets to success.

[16:25] We all self-sabotage. It’s human nature. But once you have awareness around all the ways you self-sabotage, you reclaim your power.

[18:30] You can both expect greatness and expect that failure will happen. Learning to live with human imperfections and high expectations isn’t always easy, but learning to see your imperfections with grace can fuel greatness.

[22:25] Stacey makes a case for simplicity; i.e. creating guidelines and routines that reflect your natural strengths and support the success you want to see in your life.

[24:53] What are the most joyful moments of Stacey’s job? Her vulnerable answer includes the very real responsibility of telling other people’s stories and the pride she feels for being a woman in sports today.

[27:40] Lindsey and Stacey chat about kindness, putting in the work, and always delivering early. And wrap up their episode by discussing Stacey’s next steps in work and life and the importance of self-grace.

  • Last fall, I recorded an episode all about 5 things that bring me joy. It was an outlier of an episode, and one that I had to be convinced to record, but I got a great response. Many of you told me that you enjoyed learning more about my personal life and what goes on behind the scenes as a mom and business owner. It’s been about a year since that episode, so I figured it was time for life update #2!

This episode is centered around 3 things I’m into right now. As I chat about each one, some deeper themes come up, including:

How creating things with your hands can make you feel empowered and safeHow often the simplest way is the best way.How It can be hard to get back into something you were once great at - (and why the reward is worth the discomfort).

  • Despite goal setting becoming super mainstream over the last decade, most of what you hear about it just barely scratches the surface.

Sure, breaking down your goals, building vision boards, and learning to manifest is great, but what happens when you don’t feel like getting out of bed? What happens on weeks when you lose the spark and motivation to achieve your goals? Is the payoff of your goals really worth what it’s going to take to get there?

When you rely on mainstream goal setting techniques you leave yourself vulnerable to all the real life shit that makes it hard for anyone, even the most disciplined people in the world, to make real, lasting change.

So in today’s episode, we’re going to dig deep. We’ll talk about:

Planning for discomfort (before you feel it)Emotional goals - and why they motivate your subconsciousWhat it means to break down you goals into numbers (and why it matters)Negative visualization and the Worst Case Scenario exerciseThe #1 question you should ask yourself when you set a goal+ So much more.

If you have a big goal, whether that’s to start a business, make the Olympic team, or move out of the country, this episode breaks down 6 key questions that will give you the absolute best shot of taking your goal from a dream to a reality.

Listen to the full episode for context, and come back to these 6 questions whenever you need them.

8 KEY QUESTIONS FOR GOAL SETTING

Let’s say your goal is to get in shape, here’s how you might answer these 8 questions.

#1. How will achieving this goal change your life? I’ll have more energy in the morning to play with my kids, I’ll feel strong and able to do the activities I love. It may help my mental health.

#2. What is the (literal and figurative) cost of my goal? The cost of gym memberships, a workout program, and healthier groceries. The social cost of not going out for food and drinks as often.

#3. What can I do to increase the likelihood of my success in this goal? Getting a trainer, planning ahead, getting friends on board, getting a babysitter, meal planning, joining a meal delivery service.

#4:What are some numbers behind the goal? Are they realistic? # of hours I’ll work out every week, $ of a membership/training, # of months to achieve my goal, # on a scale.

#5. What is the best case scenario and what is the worst case scenario? Will it be worth it either way? Best case is I hit my goal and I feel great! Worst is I try and don’t hit my goal, but I get closer to it, and I make some healthy changes along the way.

#6. Who am I going to become in this process? I get to become the person who shows up for myself and works at what I want, I get to become someone who works hard even when I don’t feel like it. I get to become someone who sets an example for my athletes and my kids.

#7. What will I need from others?I’ll need someone else to walk the dog so I can make a healthy breakfast, I’ll need someone else to make dinner so we don’t order out as much. I’ll need someone to pick up the kids so I can go to the gym.

#8. What’s my plan when I get off course? When I get off course, I’ll journal about my goal and re-commit to it. I’ll reach out to my accountability buddy and schedule a workout.
