I talk about the concept of The Someday List in my most recent book, The PLAN, and it’s something I came up with as a reframe of goals and dreams. Instead of changing my thinking in order to make goals and dreams work or ignoring them altogether, I changed the phrasing and posture to more fully align with how I personally view my life and time. And that reframe is The Someday List.

I keep thinking I’ll get tired of this practice since I do it every quarter, but as time goes on, I love it even more. The regular rhythm of noticing your life and naming what’s saving it, what’s making it light or grounded or joyful or even tolerable in certain seasons, is immensely helpful in being an integrated, content person. Let’s name where we are and what’s helping us be there right now.

Alright, let’s huddle up. It’s the middle of November. Now that Halloween is over and we’re into the November swing, the avalanche of holiday stuff falls fast. The other thing that can sometimes happen this time of year is you start seeing ads for new planners. Most of us want a new one before the year is over so that we can start the new year fresh and ready to go, so planner-ordering energy is starting to wake up.
I want you to remember that your planner is not magic. It is simply a tool to help you organize certain aspects of your life. The problem is that we often expect more from it than it has the capacity to give, so today, let’s talk about the 7 things you shouldn’t expect your planner to do.

My guess is you come across these fairly often but most certainly this time of year. Making decisions with a big group usually starts with someone in that group asking “what are we going to do about [fill in the blank]?” And the decision fatigue and task paralysis begin. So whether that’s you and your in-laws with the Thanksgiving split, you and friends with your annual holiday party, or you and your immediate family with gift giving, I think this episode will be helpful.

The PLAN, my book on compassionate time management has been in the world for two weeks now, and I really hope you all have been enjoying it.
Books stick with us when there are catchy things, right? Frameworks, acronyms, illustrations, and analogies. The PLAN has all of those, but I wanted to spend a little time talking today about one of those analogies, and it, to me, is one of the most freeing pieces of time management advice you’ll ever hear.

Compassionate time management is needed, and I believe that I am uniquely qualified to teach, share, and encourage it. I’m a recovering perfectionist, I’m good at systems, I’m a student of personal growth, I’m a therapy patient, and I’m a teacher. All of those things together have made me see the world through this very specific lens of compassion, and tomorrow is the day that the book I wrote to teach compassionate time management releases into the world.

An odd stretch of time is when something significant changes the vibe of your daily life over a handful of days. Whether it’s a sickness, an injury, a guest, a project, it impacts your routines. It upends previously settled calendar logistics. It’s not always bad or even unwanted. It’s just odd. Let’s talk about navigating it well.

I’ve been doing a lot of interviews recently, and a lot of the questions are understandably connected to the things we could or should be doing to have a better day. What are the routines, the tasks, the hacks that can get us to a place where we feel like we’re not underwater all the time? Well, the most accurate answer is that those aren’t the questions we should be asking. We really need a huge paradigm shift, and today, I want to focus on aspects of time management we’ve been getting wrong.

We do What’s Saving My Life episodes regularly, just about every quarter, and I find the practice helpful, light, enjoyable, and necessary to keep me rooted in my season. But today is a little different because it is a Hall of Fame episode.

Everyone has calendars to logistic (I know that’s not right, but I like it), and for certain people, seasons, families, those logistics feel like they’re going to eat you alive. Right now, my Google calendar has so many blocks in it, some of which overlap and I haven’t quite figured out how to reconcile those overlaps yet. It’s a whole thing, and maybe your calendar looks or at least feels like that.
So let’s talk about how to do this like a Lazy Genius. How can you manage calendar logistics in a reasonably efficient, intentionally kind way?

We’re into compassionate time management around here, but it’s not just pep talks and high fives. We’re practical and kind, but we’re also educated. We are trying to understand why we struggle with time management, why we own so many planners, why we never feel like we’re doing enough, and even if we finally have let that go, we still struggle against the tide of everyone else making us feel bad for our beliefs.
Basically, the problem is not you, and today I’m going to show you why by reading you the first chapter in my new book, out October 8, called The PLAN.

When you feel overwhelmed without knowing what to do, the overwhelming feeling stays big and might get bigger which then feels like a problem. So here you are, overwhelmed, unsure of what to do about it; the feeling gets bigger, the problem, even though it’s unnamed, also gets bigger, and so you start throwing big solutions at an unnamed problem that don’t work, which then causes you to feel even more overwhelmed.
Instead, today I want to share with you seven ways to meet overwhelm.

These are lifelong, long haul principles that will make your life more grounded, content, and help you continue to name and focus on what matters most to you in whatever season you’re in. Plus, they help you get your stuff done. What a world that something can actually help you live your life and without an ounce of shame or shoulds.
