Thereβs something about winter that makes us want to bundle up and get warm. And while many of us do this with sweaters, a beanie, and thick wool socks, thereβs another critical way we stay warm: Through the herbs and food we eat.
In many herbal traditions, plants are often split into warming or cooling. A cooling herb might be great in summer, but it can leave you feeling off-balance during the cold winter months. Thatβs why itβs important to turn to warming herbs and spices that heat us up from the inside out. By doing this, we not only stay warmer, but we also come a little bit closer to living in harmony with natureβs cycles.
In todayβs episode, youβll learn:
How living in harmony with the seasons connects us with nature
Why using warming herbs keeps us balanced, vital, and healthy during winter
The main actions, energetics, and affinities of warming herbs
How to use simple warming spices you already have at home
My favorite recipes for warming teas, herbal lattes, and even a few cocktails

If you walk into a hip smoothie shop or health food store, youβll undoubtedly be flooded with the newest βsuperfoodsβ and cure-all herbs. Like so many things in our modern culture, herbal medicine also has its own βfads,β as it seems as if thereβs almost a new one in style each season.
Although it may seem harmless at first and they may be a good gateway into the realm of herbal medicine, herbal fads may not necessarily be a good thing. Most of the time, theyβre promoted by big supplement companies looking to inflate their bottom line, even if the truth is a bit fudged to get there (or even flat-out lies!). By learning about the danger of herbal fads, you can become a more conscious consumer and herbalist and know how to navigate this sometimes confusing territory.
In todayβs blog post youβll learn:
Whoβs behind herbal fads and how theyβre born in the market
How herbal fads hurt the credibility of herbalism and pigeonhole herbs
The ecological and cultural damage herbal fads can cause
Ways companies lie about herbs and how they can hurt you
Why herbal fads can change the way you think about herbs without even realizing it

In this weekβs podcast, Sajah speaks with Jesse Wolfe Hardin, an herbalist and environmental renaissance man. The author of over 25 books, Jesse Wolf has taught anima life practices for decades and was the first to coin the term rewilding. Jesse is the co-founder of the International Good Medicine Confluence Gathering, the digital magazine for herbalist healers and folklorists, Plant Healer Quarterly, and the co-creator of the Revealing Hedge Guild Oracle Guide. Todayβs conversation takes place with Jesse in a remote river canyon, deeply nestled in the wild lands of New Mexico.
In this heart-to-heart conversation, Jesse talks about how the Earth is intelligent, living, sentient, and is constantly evolving, adapting, and healing itself. In that process, it offers us a model for our own healing and evolution. When we connect with the Earth and work with its plants and rhythms, we tap into that deep intelligence and allow it to guide us on our path to wholeness.
Whatβs so powerful about herbal medicine is that itβs not just about fixing a symptom or addressing a single ailment. It's about engaging in a relationship with the plants, with the land, and with ourselves. It's about recognizing that our health is interconnected with the health of the Earth and that by healing ourselves, we also contribute to the healing of the planet.
As we explore and deepen our understanding of herbal medicine, we need to remember that it's not just about the plants themselves, but about the relationships we cultivate with them and how they help us to reconnect with the living Earth. It's about fostering a sense of reverence and gratitude for the natural world and allowing that to inspire us to live more harmoniously with it. In this way, herbal medicine becomes a spiritual practice, a way of life that fosters a deeper connection to the natural world and a greater sense of belonging. It reminds us that we are not separate from nature, but an integral part of it. In that recognition, we find a sense of purpose and a path to true wellness.
In todayβs episode youβll learn:
The importance of creating roots in life, and how grounding in a physical location opens your world to forming deeper connections to your local environment
Everyone has a gift and a calling in the world, and advice for how you can find yours

Meadowsweet is often thought of as herbal aspirin. Even though itβs no secret that its compounds were originally used to formulate and synthesize aspirin, can you really use it in the same way?
If you want to get the same results from Meadowsweet as aspirin, you would have to drink quarts of the tea, which is tough to do because itβs incredibly bitter. Not only would you be feeling pretty nauseous by the end, but you would also only get the strength of a baby aspirin, if youβre lucky!
Even though Meadowsweet contains aspirin-like compounds, they are not the same. Meadowsweet is an herb used for centuries, and although it has many traditional uses, its applications are more relevant than ever in our modern day.
In todayβs episode, youβll discover:
Meadowsweetβs bitter and astringent taste and why this combination is so good for treating ulcers
How Meadowsweet alleviates heartburn, ulcers in the GI, joint pain, and more with its energetic and biochemical properties
Why Meadowsweet is helpful for so many modern-day issues that didnβt use to exist
Meadowsweetβs powerful connection with Saturn and how it balances other planetary influences

Margi Flint is a practicing herbalist, registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild, and herbal mentor from Marblehead, Massachusetts. Margi's wisdom spans over 20 years of labor coaching certification, polarity therapy, and Reiki, alongside 40-plus years of clinical herbal practice. She teaches at Pacific Rim College in Victoria, British Columbia, and has lectured at numerous prestigious herb schools, including Tufts Medical and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, as well as Boston University.
She is also the author of one of my favorite and, in my opinion, one of the most useful herb books of all time, "The Practicing Herbalist: Meeting with Clients, Reading the Body," now in its fourth edition. She is most known for sharing the legacy of the late William LeSassier. The plants and her clients are her revered teachers.
Margi is one of the most inspirational herbalists I know today and a true master in holistic evaluation and client intakes. For this episode of the Plant Path, I had the opportunity to connect with her, learn more about her expertise, and hear whatβs in store for us in her new book honoring the late William LeSassier.
In todayβs episode, youβll learn:
How to get the information you need in a consult by asking the right questions and reading the body
Ways to help clients overcome their skepticism and get the most from their sessions
The best way to filter whatβs important in a consultation and follow-up sessions
Whatβs really behind the wave of digestive issues and food allergies today
About Margiβs upcoming project, and how youβll have the chance to learn from one of the most influential herbalists of our time in the first-ever book recording of his work

Is all herbal research trustworthy? If youβve ever Googled an herb to learn more and saw lots of research papers about it, can you trust them? Herbal research is tricky since there are a lot of things that can go wrong and right with them that make the results tricky to decipher.
Even though understanding herbal research isnβt 100% necessary as a clinical herbalist, it can introduce novel uses of plants, and of course, knowing the chemistry of an herbal makes you a much better medicine maker. With a few pointers, you can learn how to tell if the scientific research you read online is trustworthy.
In todayβs episode, youβll discover:
Signs that a piece of research was funded by an organization with an agenda
The differences between in-vivo, in-vitro, and clinical research, and which is best
Ways science can back up traditional knowledge about plants
The dangers of believing any research article about herbs you find
Some of the most common things that make an article untrustworthy

Sweet and grounding, Burdock is an Earthy plant with its wide leaves, deep taproots, and ability to both nourish weakness and cleanse excesses from the body. Just as it loves to grow near waste grounds, Burdock clears metabolic waste products and toxins from the fluids in your body to keep your skin glowing and healthy.
Since the health of the skin is merely a reflection of the health of your liver, blood, lymph, and digestion, focusing on topical solutions alone wonβt get you very far. By working on each of these organs on a deep level, you can find long-term relief for chronic skin conditions through Burdock.
In todayβs plant profile, youβll discover:
Why I call Burdock the βall-purpose alterativeβ and how itβs so versatile
Burdockβs unique blend of sweet, mineral salt, and slightly bitter tastes which leads to its versatile medicine influence
The relationship between oily and expansive Burdock and the gas planet Jupiter
How you can use Burdock to improve your skin, whether itβs overly dry or oily
Ways Burdock can help you deal with your worries about the unknown
Different ways you can prepare Burdock at home, from tea to soup

Medical astrology is one of the most misunderstood assessment tools available in herbalism, with many flat out rejecting its usefulness or efficacy because of preconceived notions of astrology in general.
Despite its spiritual or βwoo-wooβ implications, astrology has practical therapeutic applications. By learning how to use this tool correctly, you can pinpoint an imbalanced organ system, tissue state, or constitutional pattern and develop greater accuracy in your herbalism practice.
In episode I talk about:
Medical astrologyβs historical roots in medicine
The line between tradition and science that herbalists face
What medical astrology looks like in practice
My concerns for the new era of medical astrology
How to combine the practice medical astrology with more common tools

According to the Evolutionary Herbalism model, a holistic practitioner is someone who integrates the physical, energetic, and spiritual properties of a plant with these aspects of a person to facilitate profound and transformative healing.
Medical astrology stands out as one of the most powerful tools to craft a refined, precise, and effective system of holistic herbal medicine that addresses the entirety of an individual.
In todayβs episode, youβll learn:
The importance of practicing holistic herbalism
The history and significance of medical astrology
Ways that medical astrology can elevate your practice

Scott Kloos is an herbalist, wildcrafter, and medicine maker. He founded and acts as the managing director of the School of Forest Medicine and owns Cascadia Folk Medicine, which supplies high-quality, small-batch herbal extracts from the native plants of the Pacific Northwest region. He also co-founded the Elderberry School of Botanical Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and authored the book Pacific Northwest Medicinal Plants: Identify, Harvest, and Use 120 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness.
I always think of Scott as a fellow plant brother and someone I really see eye-to-eye with. For this episode of the Plant Path, I had the opportunity to connect with him, hear more about his relationship to wildcrafting, and whatβs in store for all of us in his upcoming course, Relationships of Loving Reciprocity.
Heβs currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the final creation and launching of that course with some sweet perks. Check it out right here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/forestmedicine/relationships-of-loving-reciprocity
In todayβs blog post, youβll learn:
What wildcrafting is and how it differs from regenerative wildcrafting
The unique ways that wildcrafting local plants can reconnect you to yourself, your body, and your environment
Why developing a relationship thatβs not only transactional but heartfelt, is so important when wildcrafting plants
About Scottβs upcoming project, and how youβll have the chance to enter the woods with him from the comfort of your own home
