Episodios

  • Aside from the comedy you gain watching your buddy repeatedly shank his tee shot into the water (he’ll eventually get it, right!?), you and I can both learn a lot about the art of comedy when it comes to improving our golf game.

Specifically, from the improv framework, “yes, and,” which fosters acceptance, creativity, open-mindedness, collaboration, and focus.

In today’s episode, you’ll learn how and why you should adapt the “yes, and” framework on the golf course to find more resiliency, acceptance, presence, and enjoyment during your rounds.

The Art and Science of Acceptance (Newsletter)

    Key Points:

The 'Yes, And' framework fosters creativity and acceptance. Acceptance is crucial in both comedy and golf. Building off mistakes can lead to better outcomes. Collaboration with the course enhances performance. Staying present allows for better focus and execution. Every shot is an opportunity to reset and refocus. Mistakes are learning opportunities, not failures. A positive mindset can change the course of a game. Emotional resilience is key to playing well. Enjoying the game is as important as performance.

    Key Quotes:

“I want to discuss how yes and the framework that allows creativity, novelty, excitement and damn good humor to flourish in the comedic realm. The same framework can allow you to infuse a sense of passionate acceptance and presence in the moment after hitting a poor shot or making a mistake to ultimately help prepare yourself.” “There's a deep, strong element of acceptance. This means agreeing with whatever premise or scenario is presented. And again, this might be by another comedian, an audience member, or just the situation you and that comedian are building off of. The idea here is to embrace whatever comes up instead of rejecting or blocking it.” “You are going to hit so many great shots in your life that still don't land or go where you intended. It might be a bad bounce. It might lead to an unfortunate lie. You have to remain present, accepting, and adaptable.”

  • In today’s episode, I’ll recap…

The long-term benefit one of my clients has experienced since our initial call in early 2024 (his handicap has dropped from 5.7 to 2.1 this year) Shooting my lowest score of the year… …and having the most number of putts during the round What continues to sabotage my score and hold me back from breaking 90 What I’m specifically working on this week Why I feel this coming weekend is the round I break 90…

    Start listening.

    Also, here's a heads-up: I updated my Instagram tag to @thegolfhypnotherapist.

P.S. If you’re interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on the course and in your business, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me.

    Key Points:

Mindset coaching can lead to significant improvements in performance. Staying present and aware is crucial for making better decisions on the course. Practicing visualization techniques can enhance focus and confidence. Having a solid warmup routine is essential for optimal performance. It's important to analyze both successes and failures to learn and grow. Adjusting your grip can impact your putting performance significantly. Consistency in practice leads to better results over time. Setting realistic goals helps maintain motivation and focus. Embracing the process is key to enjoying the game of golf.

    Key Quotes:

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others.” “Could this be the weekend I keep the ball in bounds, putt confidently, take it one shot at a time, shot at a time, emotionally reset, refocus and regroup between every hole and play to my potential? Could this be the defining weekend where I break 90, I go low, I rack up five pars in one string of nine holes? I don't know, stay tuned.” “We're out of bounds. Are you starting to notice the theme here? We're out of bounds again on 15. We end up with a double bogey on five, bringing us to the par three, 16. Boom, we hit the green in regulation again. This is a big talking point of today's episode.” “I feel like I took three steps back in my swing. I felt like I couldn't hit the golf ball to save my life. I'm inconsistent, I'm overthinking. I wanna just regress back to what worked for me three days ago that I felt so confident about. And now I'm inviting in all of these swing thoughts.”

  • Meet Chris Ardolina - a multi-award-winning teaching professional at Cove Cay Golf Club in Clearwater, Florida.

Chris became a scratch golfer at - wait for it - the age of 14. After deciding not to pursue professional golf, he decided to give teaching a go. He immediately fell in love with it and the rest is history.

    In today’s episode, you’ll learn:

How to identify the root cause of your struggles AND develop an effective practice plan to overcome them. How to infuse both intention and purpose into your practice sessions to accelerate results. How to approach the mental and physical aspects of your warm-up and what differes compared to when you practice. The three-step accelerated improvement framework Chris uses with all of his clients to meet them where they’re at and get them to where they want to be - fast. Plus, Chris shared the top priority to focus on when you’re trying to break 90, break 80, and shoot scratch.

Get your pencils ready and start listening.

    More About Chris

Chris grew up in central New Jersey and started playing golf at the age of 12. By age 14, he started shooting "par" at his local public course and earned recognition as one of the top junior golfers in the area. Throughout high school, Chris played 4 years of varsity golf, and his 9-hole score of 3 under par 33 remains tied for the lowest in school history.

Chris's pursuit of a golf-focused career led him to Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina where he majored in Business Administration with a concentration in Professional Golf Management. After graduating, he embarked on a journey with the Jim McLean Golf Schools in Miami, Florida, where his passion for teaching blossomed.

He now owns and operates the Chris Ardolina Golf Academy out of Cove Cay Golf Club located in Clearwater, Florida.

Beyond golf, Chris finds joy in playing ice hockey, tennis, yoga and biking along the scenic Tampa/Clearwater trails.

    Key Takeaways:

Identify the root causes of your struggles in golf to develop effective practice plans. Practice with intention and purpose, starting with small drills and gradually progressing to more challenging exercises. Create a focused warm-up routine to bring confidence and clarity to the first tee. Follow a three-step process for improvement: understand the current state, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes. As you progress in golf, shift your focus to more specific aspects of the game. Consistency is key for golfers looking to break 100. Eliminating big numbers and focusing on reducing penalty shots can lead to significant improvement. To break 90, golfers should work on their approach shots and aim for consistent distance control. Being able to get close to the green and give themselves a chance to make par or bogey is crucial. Breaking 80 requires hitting more greens and having a solid short game. Golfers should aim to make more pars and reduce the number of putts. Becoming a scratch golfer involves paying attention to the details and making good decisions on the course. Strategy and course management become more important at this level. Playing in tournaments requires practicing under pressure and being familiar with the rules. Many golfers struggle in tournaments because they are not used to playing with the same level of pressure and adherence to rules.

    Key Quotes:

"You can go from hip high to shoulder to full swing all within that singular practice session" "I want you to take one to two practice swings for every ball that you hit" "The biggest thing that can help them create consistency and help them lose less golf balls or take less penalty shots." "Breaking 90 comes down to a lot of approach shots and consistent distance control." "To break 80, you need to hit more greens and have a solid short game."

  • In today’s episode, I’ll recap…

An incredibly awful round I’d like to forget and move on from (whoops). The price of skipping my warm-up and neglecting pre-round mental work. A joyous weekend of love, laughter, and (too much?) fun - and how it impacted my golf game. Focusing on shortening my backswing off the tee box. Hitting ‘em well, yet, still scoring too high…

    Start listening.

P.S. If you’re interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on the course and in your business, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me.

P.P.S. The newsletter I referenced: The Art and Science of Acceptance - start reading.

    Key Points:

Personal experiences and events off the golf course can impact performance on the golf course. Improving swing mechanics, such as shortening the backswing, can lead to better ball striking. Patience, focus, and managing pressure are important aspects of the mental game in golf. Consistent practice and working on specific areas, like the short game and putting, can lead to improvement. Sharing progress and experiences with others can provide accountability and motivation.

    Key Quotes:

“I shot a 54 in the back, a 105 for the day, a couple penalties on the back, hitting out of bounds, a couple lost balls that I know didn't go in the water. We just couldn't find them. So we had to take the stroke and play onward. 19 putts on the back nine, 35 putts total. And that's where we were today. And to be frank, a lot of missed opportunity.” “You're not getting the club face all the way close and around. This is why you're pushing or slicing and you're not able to consistently hit well off the tee box. So really the intention today was significantly shortening my backswing.” “There’s a lot of misunderstanding about the type of coaching I do and where and how I use hypnosis to help competitive golfers, amateur golfers play their best golf. A lot of what we work on are elements taking place away from the course because no matter how hard you try or you want to, you can't separate the golfer.” “They're likely plaguing you and your professional, your personal and your romantic lives as well. And if we flip that too, if you have a lot going on in your personal life, you may struggle with patience, focus, concentration, confidence on the course as well.”

  • Imagine starting your round with a triple bogey…

In most cases, letting this poor start set the tone for the day is easy, ultimately leading to a poor round and less-than-enjoyable experience.

But what if you could weather the tough start and go on to play one of the best rounds of your life?

Acceptance empowers you to do just that.

Acceptance in this scenario means acknowledging the rough start without letting it dictate the rest of your round. It allows you to reset your mindset, focus on one shot at a time, and potentially recover with better play on subsequent holes.

In today’s episode, you’ll learn more about the power of acceptance on the golf course, specifically, how cultivating an acceptance practice can accelerate results and improve your performance.

I’ll discuss acceptance and how it differs from avoidance, share several direct benefits of practicing acceptance on the course, dig into what the research says about acceptance and high performance, and also discuss how to begin practicing acceptance on and off the course.

    Start listening.

P.S. If you’re interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on (and off) the course, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me.

    Key Points:

Acceptance is the practice of acknowledging and allowing thoughts, feelings, or outcomes without resisting or trying to change them. Acceptance helps golfers stay calm, focused, and resilient, regardless of the outcome. Practicing acceptance reduces stress, improves mental resilience, and increases confidence. Acceptance enhances enjoyment of the game and allows golfers to play more freely and instinctively. Practical tips for applying acceptance include using breathwork, focusing on one shot at a time, and maintaining positive self-talk.

    Key Quotes:

“Acceptance is the mental practice of acknowledging and embracing each moment of your round without judgment or resistance, allowing you to stay calm, focused, and resilient regardless of outcomes.” "It is a principle, a concept that will absolutely accelerate your progress to shooting lower scores." "Acceptance in this scenario means acknowledging the rough start, the poor hold, the mistake, the poor outcome without letting it dictate the remainder of your round." "Acceptance doesn't mean passivity or timidness. It's about staying mentally engaged and confident in your ability to recover and perform regardless of what the game, the round, the hole throws at you."

Playing my first round with my new clubs (did they fix everything?). Playing 18 on back-to-back days (and my driver forgot to show up). Hitting a new low number of putts. Looking hard to find the (many) positives after each round. Where I’m spending time away from the course getting better this week.

P.P.S. The podcast episodes I mentioned:

Paul Salter is On the Mark with Mark Immelman Paul Salter talks hypnotherapy with Josh Nichols Paul Salter on the Fore Dudes One Cart Podcast

    Key Points:

Consistent practice and repetition with new clubs can lead to improvements in iron play Struggles with the driver and three wood can impact confidence and overall performance Visualization and mental preparation are important aspects of the game Acknowledging and celebrating progress, even if it doesn't meet expectations, is crucial for motivation and commitment

    Key Quotes:

"Knuckles down, knuckles down, knuckles down." "The way you respond to a bad start is you come back with vengeance with another par." "I had one, two, three, four, five, six bogeys and one par." “I grinded out those bogeys. I did not hit the ball well today. I felt inept off the tee box. And when I sat down to total up my 18, I was pleasantly surprised to see a 98 and to see a 48.” “So there's an honest look, a lot of wins, a lot of things to work on, some highs and lows, but at the core, we're moving in the right direction. And we have more than two months, 15 plus rounds or so to shoot sub 90.”

    More About Dr. Novetsky

Dr. Novetsky is the sport psychology and mental toughness coach for numerous collegiate, high school, and club-level teams in various sports across Michigan and the United States. He coaches numerous individual professional, collegiate, and youth athletes in his Birmingham, MI office and virtually to help them achieve their personal championships.

Learn more about and work with him here.

    Key Takeaways:

Having a strong set of standards and values helps athletes live and play in the present with a neutral mindset in the face of pressure and adversity. Emotional resilience is fostered by thinking more neutrally, being curious, thinking tactically, and focusing on the smartest next move. Identity statements are short sentences or paragraphs that athletes read daily to align their behavior and choices with the person they want to become. Patience is a common challenge for athletes, especially in a society that values instant gratification. It is important to focus on the process and evaluate oneself based on effort, attitude, preparation, and discipline. Fear of success can stem from the expectations of others and the pressure to consistently perform at a high level. Setting new goals and focusing on growth can help alleviate this fear. A growth mindset is crucial for athletes to continue improving. It involves being open to growth, embracing challenges, and learning from setbacks. Detaching one's identity from their score on the golf course is essential for maintaining a healthy mindset. Developing a mental workout routine away from the course can greatly improve performance. Self-evaluation is an important tool for bouncing back from poor performances. It is important for golfers to separate their golf identity from their personal identity. They should remember that golf is just one aspect of their life and not let their performance on the course define their self-worth.

    Key Quotes:

"Having a strong set of standards and values that you always fall back on helps you to live and play in the present with a neutral mindset in the face of pressure and adversity." "We need to think more neutrally, be curious, think tactically, think effectively, think productively." "Your behavior or your choices or the way you speak to yourself consistent with the person you want to be?" "What are the ingredients and recipe you need to make that plate happen?"

  • Have you ever started a round strong, only to crumble as the finish line approaches?

Have you ever felt so close to a financial, health, or golf goal that you succumbed to unconscious, sabotaging behaviors when it was almost within reach?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you have an upper-limit problem.

In this episode, you’ll learn what an upper-limit problem is - that frustrating, invisible barrier that keeps you from reaching your full potential, both on the golf course and in life.

You’ll learn how a fear of success can be just as limiting as the fear of failure and how this mental block keeps you from breaking through.

You’ll also learn why you’re hardwired to fear success (yes, you read that right) and what you can do to break through this upper limit and achieve next-level success both on and off the course.

    Start listening.

P.S. If you’re interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on the course and in your business, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me.

    Key Points:

The fear of success can hold you back from achieving your goals. The upper limit problem is the unconscious belief that there is a limit to how much success you can achieve. Fear of judgment, abandonment, and rejection often accompany success. Addressing and changing your beliefs and fears is necessary to break through to the next level of success. The fear of success can manifest in different areas of life, such as health, relationships, and golf.

    Key Quotes:

"There is a hidden ceiling and invisible gravitational-like force holding you back that isn't rooted in fear of failure. It's rooted in fear of success." "Your fear of success, the reason you remain stuck and have yet to break through to next level success in your golf game and your business and your personal life and your family life is there." "Your work lies in constantly committing to doing the work to raise the floor, not raise your ceiling, raise the floor, which means raise the level of success your subconscious feels safe achieving."

In today’s episode, you’ll learn more about the mental and emotional challenges of playing in high-pressure tournaments - and how to overcome them, how to integrate a practice of acknowledgment and acceptance to accelerate results, as well as why having a pre-shot routine really matters (and the unknown benefits it provides).

    Key Takeaways:

Acknowledging and accepting mistakes is crucial in moving on from poor performances. Focusing on what is important in the present moment helps to stay mentally resilient. Understanding and managing emotions is key to maintaining a positive mindset in golf. A strong pre-shot routine and commitment to the target can improve performance. Mindset and mental resilience play a significant role in golf success. It's normal to feel frustration or anger after a poor shot in golf. Suppressing these emotions can lead to more trouble down the road. Allow yourself a moment to feel the emotions and then move on. Don't try to ignore or suppress them. The pre-shot routine is important for helping players feel confident and present. It should focus on getting freed up, accepting the results, and picking a good target. The details of the pre-shot routine don't matter as much as the overall purpose. It doesn't have to be the same every time, but it should help you accomplish your mental goals. Having a plan and being flexible with it is key in golf. Accepting and embracing the emotions that come with playing can help players be more present and perform better.

    Key Quotes:

"Mistakes are normal. Mistakes are human." "Acceptance and saying, 'I, any shot could be a bad golf shot.'" "What's important to me now? What's relevant now?" "That emotion is a normal human response. It's okay, it's normal, and kind of circling back to what you said earlier, it's the repression of those emotions that lead to more trouble down the road." "I think working through it, however long it takes. I would never say you're not allowed to feel it, but I also wouldn't say you need to stop feeling it after 10 seconds." "The pre-shot routine is to get you freed up, to get you feeling confident, which is to say, 'This ball could go anywhere and I'll be okay.'"

    Key Points:

To achieve your golfing goals, you need to become the person who is capable of achieving them. Creating an alter ego can help you express different aspects of your golfing identity. Align your actions and decisions with your golfing identity to achieve your goals.

    Key Quotes:

"Who do you need to become to break 90? Who do you need to become to break 80, to shoot scratch?" "Who do you need to become to achieve said goal?" “Did you know that Beyonce has an incredibly strong religious upbringing?” “I show up with a beginner's mindset really as a student of the game to absorb and learn as much as I can from these individuals.” “The sum of your results influences your identity. The sum of the decisions you make and the actions you take influence your results. It's the collection of your beliefs that influence the actions and decisions you make.” “And it is your self -talk, which is composed of both your word choice and your thoughts that eventually go on to shape your beliefs.” “And if we go from the very core, now moving bottom to top of piece of paper, it's your self -talk, which is composed of your word choice and thoughts that influence your beliefs, which influence your actions and decisions, ultimately shaping your results and creating your identity.”

  • There’s a stark difference between being interested in improving your golf game and being committed to improving it.

Unfortunately, many say they’re committed, yet they’re merely interested.

In today’s episode, you’ll learn the difference between being interested in shooting lower scores versus being committed to shooting lower scores, as well as five specific areas you can bring commitment to so that you can begin shooting more pars than bogeys.

    Key Points:

Commitment is essential for improving your golf game and achieving your goals. Detach your self-worth from your golf score to avoid negative emotions and maintain healthy relationships. Being committed means taking action and following through, not just being interested. Choose one approach for swing technique and stick to it, avoiding distractions and conflicting advice. Create a pre-round course management strategy to make informed decisions and shoot the lowest score possible. Trust your instincts in club selection and commit to your chosen swing execution. Develop a practice routine that aligns with your goals and prioritize consistent effort and improvement.

    Key Quotes:

"Your ability to manage your emotions and keep them in check to not allow them to the driver seat of your decisions in daily life, you need to strengthen that skill." "Committed can be defined as feeling dedication and loyalty to a cause, activity or job. You are wholeheartedly dedicated. You are all in." "When you're committed, you do what you know you need to do, even when you don't feel like it."

  • In today’s episode, I’ll recap…

This past week, I played five balls per hole on a par-three short course (seriously), Breaking 100 for the second time Playing the front nine solo and the back nine with a group of rowdy buddies Grinding my way through some less-than-pretty golf Keeping golf fun Managing self-placed expectations.

    Start listening.

P.S. I’m conducting research to better understand how I can provide the content and education you need to shoot more pars than bogeys.

I want to learn more about your challenges, fears, desires, and goals so I can create content that impacts you and your game at a deeper level.

If you currently have a double-digit handicap and are determined to break 90 (or 80), I’d love to ask you a handful of questions over a quick Zoom call.

If you’re open to it, you can schedule at your convenience here.

    Key Points:

Consistent practice and focus on the short game can lead to significant improvement in distance control. Having a consistent warm-up routine is essential for preparing mentally and physically for a round of golf. Playing with others can create pressure and distractions, but it's important to focus on having fun and staying in the present moment. Blow-up holes can be analyzed to identify areas for improvement in course management and decision-making. A golf-specific training program that emphasizes mobility, flexibility, and endurance can help improve performance on the course.

    Key Quotes:

"You as well need two variations of your pre-round warmup routine." “I did not play well. And I want to unpack some of the learning lessons and the challenges and I'll sprinkle in the wins because there were many wins in there.” “I need a backup routine. I need a short routine that allows me to be physically warm and to quickly build the confidence I need to play my best.” “I'll be very frank with you my fear I need to overcome is playing with others - there's this pressure I place on myself to be perfect to perform to live up to my potential and the expectations I place on myself”

  • Meet Henry Kurusz IV, also known as Bear.

He attended a high school golf powerhouse - the same school Charlie Woods now attends and the one Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman sent their kids to - and despite having two small school offers to play collegiate golf, he decided to walk on Florida State to play. He won the walk-on tournament to make the team.

Unfortunately, an injury derailed his college career, yet it would prove to be minuscule to the lupus diagnosis that almost took the game away from him in 2010 - and again in 2022 when symptoms flared up.

You’ll hear Henry’s inspiring and admirable story, which includes winning thousands of dollars as a long-drive competitor (and competing on ESPN), and returning to the game that is ingrained in who he is despite battling lupus.

You’ll learn how he approaches and manages the mental game of golf, the feedback and coaching he’d offer his younger self - and shares with his two young boys - and what he recommends you do to accelerate your progress toward becoming a scratch golfer.

    Key Quotes:

"It just stemmed from getting away from that mindset, getting the right mindset and playing a little more course management, playing the golf ball and getting it in play." "How did you keep your sanity, your clarity? Seeing them love the game and love finding golf balls and hitting golf balls." "It's learning a lot about the course management, really learning where your strengths and weaknesses are and trying to play towards that." “So there's a blood clot behind my knee. And so in the process of finding out why a relatively healthy 27 year old developed a blood clot, we developed or found out they had lupus. And so just kind of went with it.”

  • Welcome to the first installment of the “Journey to Scratch” series of The Scratch Golfer’s Mindset Podcast.

Rather than trying to cram valuable coaching and education alongside updates on my own journey to scratch into a single episode, I believe you’ll get more value if I separate the two entirely.

Each Tuesday, I’ll recap my past week of practice, play, wins, and challenges, as well as detail what I’m working on and how I’m working on overcoming current challenges.

In today’s episode, I’ll recap my first four officially logged rounds (I use the Grint to log my rounds - connect with me: pauljsalter07), discuss my thoughts on mulligans, breakfast balls, and a two-ball scramble (you may disagree with me), as well as update you on what I’m trying to achieve by November 13, 2024…
