  • Ever wanted to completely change your career direction?  Or maybe you have a hobby which you would love to turn into an actual business?

Well, that’s what happened to Richard Cooper, who founded the artisan knife making business, Dog Boy Knives.  What he produces has to be seen to be believed (check out the photos on my website) – these amazing chef and other knives are handcrafted into practical works of art (with some made of 80 layers of Damascus Steel, which was used in sword making centuries ago).  They’re used by chefs around the world (you might even find a few in Michelin starred restaurant kitchens).

    Richard and I talk about:

How he left a good-paying job to start a passion business (something that resonates with my own story)The Importance of MentorsThe pursuit of quality means that what you made 2 years ago isn’t likely to be something you’re happy with todayHow Family & friends are often the 1st customers of a new start-up

If you want to find out more about Dog Boy Knives, head to our website www.theselfmadetheory.com/podcast where we have some very cool photos, plus all the ways you can engage with Richard.

  • This episode will inspire you to take a step back, reflect on your work or business, and think of innovative ways to disrupt the traditional, perhaps broken, business model you are working in.

I interview Mellissa Larkin, Founder and Managing Director of legal firm Peripheral Blue.

In this episode, she talks about disrupting the traditional, Partner-centric legal firm model.   Her vision is wonderful – focused not on how her firm is going to bill the next 6-minute increment, but by being laser focussed on her client’s perspective and on the wellbeing of her staff.  A real challenge to all the traditional legal firms around the world.

  • This week on The Self Made Theory, I chat with Kelly Jamieson, co-founder of Edible Blooms!  A totally amazing, unique gift business in Australia, the UK & New Zealand.

Kelly runs her business from both her office in Adelaide and from her farm, which she has done so for 10 years.  While you can imagine how prepared she was for Covid19 having a home office, based on her business model, there are just some things that can’t be done remotely.

I also chat with Kelly about other things she has faced building her business, including a rebranding disaster, how and what happens when your workforce is predominantly female.

Since meeting Kelly, I reckon I’ve had at least 3 occasions where I’ve needed to get a gift for someone – 1 locally and 2 interstate.  So, of course, I just had to try out Edible Blooms.  And they didn’t disappoint – those who received the gifts loved them.

I want to thank Kelly for an engaging, open conversation – you are going to love her insight.

  • Our "Pilot" episode for "Entrepreneurs on eScooters" is the wild, featuring Allison Nikula, founder of CareApp.

A very, very different way of telling a great story.  You really need to see the video of this interview:  www.entrepreneursonescooters.com

Allison was inspired to create CareApp through her own personal experience seeing her grandparents access aged care services.  CareApp is a powerful communication and engagement platform for aged care providers.  It brings providers, residents, carers, and families together to build a wonderful care community and support seniors to love the way they live.

And it's no small task - ageing population is on the rise with the percentage of Australians aged 65 and over rising dramatically over the past decades*:

1927 - 5% of the total population aged 65 and over

1977 - 9% of the total population aged 65 and over

2017 - 15% of the total population aged 65 and over

Allison and I discuss her journey from idea through to today where she has customers locally and globally:

How to build a tech company when you don’t have a tech backgroundThe importance of customer feedback in product developmentThe process around pitching to Investors (inc a scary example of when it doesn't go well!)Why having an “exit strategy” is essentialwhen you’re founding a business

A huge thank you to Allison for being our very 1st "Entrepreneur on eScooter".

This interview was recorded in January 2020 (pre-Covid19).  As a pilot episode, it's not perfect - a few issues with some of the audio/camera shots, etc, but overall, it is a great overview of what we will producing in future episodes (which are likely to be a little shorter as well).

Until next time….keep INNOVATING, OVERCOMING and PROSPERING

  • You know those people you meet whose stories are just so fascinating that you just have to hear more?

Well, this week on The Self Made Theory, that person is Mark Roe from Fusetec. He’s making body parts

Mark has reinvented himself as an entrepreneur multiple times.  Originally starting in the printing industry, he sold that business and semi-retired to an island in Fiji…only to discover that reliable deliveries to the island he was on was non-existent…so, like all good entrepreneurs would, he started a ferry-shipping service, which became the biggest in Fiji.

Fast forward and he’s now back in Australia – and making realistic body parts so that surgeons can learn their skills without practicing on real bodies.  And Mark didn’t know anything about healthcare before he started.

This episode is just plain fascinating - you will learn a lot about how the entrepreneurial mindset works.

  • Oh my goodness - you are going to love this episode!

I met up recently with Eloise Hall and Isobel Marshall, co-founders of TABOO Sanitary Products. And BEFORE you decide that this isn’t a topic of interest for you, especially you fellas out there, you HAVE to listen to this.

    Why?

This episode is all about business models, social impact, making a difference, overcoming hurdles, the process from business idea through to business launch and ultimately, it’s about changing the World.

Isobel and Eloise are super driven, super passionate – and the language they use when they describe business is way, way beyond the few years of experience they’ve had. And I love that they have decided that TABOO should be a Social Enterprise, which is a different business model than your usual Not-For-Profit.

I was so inspired by what they’re doing that I went home after our interview and signed up for their product subscription – not for me personally, obviously, but as a donation to women in need.

Now – here’s my Call to Action for you personally (whether you are a bloke, a woman who’s reached menopause, a parent or whetheryou want to use their product personally) – jump on their website below and subscribe. You can make a difference in a young woman’s life for less than the price of 2 cups of coffee a month.

  • Serial entrepreneurs are so much fun – and the honesty and openness of my next guests is refreshing……and enlightening.

Leah Itsines and Mitch Caon co-founded BARE - the Balanced And Realistic Eating Guide – a “realistic’ way of looking at food. They have a big following, including over half a million Instagram followers.

But the BARE Guide isn’t the only thing they’ve launched – they have had a lot, and I mean a lot of business ideas, and many failures along the way….and it’s this piece that is so important for you to listen to.

It’s all great when we hear stories of success, but listening to people’s failures is even more important – because it’s from this much learning comes.

We cover a lot of ground, including:

The critical importance of staying true to your Vision and your Brand, and what happens when you stray from thisAre all entrepreneurs control freaks? How being a “couple” can work really well in business (if you define your roles well)How important it is to not to be scared to fail. You will only get better and better. The importance of true customer feedback, not just the feedback from biased friends and family

If you want to find out more about Leah, Mitch or BARE Guide, head to our website www.theselfmadetheory.com/podcast where we have our show notes, plus all the ways you can engage with them. PLUS, we have some great photos of them & their business in there as well.

  • I’ve been a little tardy on getting you some new episodes (of course, I could blame Covid, the editing team, lots of consulting work etc etc…), but mostly I’ve been diverting my attention to some new business ideas I’m working on.

So, in this episode, I’ve done a role reversal – this is an interview, not that I conducted, but that was conducted on me!

Landell, from PlaceOS, asked me last year if I would come on her podcast…and this is the result. We talk tech, changing business practices, relationships…it’s a pretty diverse conversation.

I must tell you; I LOVE asking the questions – way more than I enjoy answering them.

I have to apologise in advance for the audio quality…it was conducted remotely over the good ol’ internet, so it’s a far cry from the quality that we normally put out on this podcast.

    Hope you enjoy it.

  • I love the intersection of technology and healthcare – the potential impacts on a person’s life if you do it right are amazing.

And that’s where my next guest comes in. Michelle Perugini, Co-Founder of Presagen and Life Whisperer, who shares her story of creating a platform that helps people with one of the most challenging and emotional medical procedures – IVF.

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) is used to overcome a range of fertility issues that many couples experience. Basically, eggs are taken from the woman and fertilised outside of the womb in a specialised laboratory. The fertilised eggs (now embryos) are allowed to grow, usually for 5 days, before being analysed by an embryologist – at which point, based on their experience and what they see in a microscope, they choose the best embryo to be transferred into the woman's uterus to increase the chance that a pregnancy will occur.

Life Whisperer provides significant help in this process. Michelle and her team have developed an AI (artificial intelligence) engine that has analysed thousands and thousands of embryos from around the world (& their success rates of pregnancy), and use this analysis to improve the selection success rate for embryologists. It’s amazing stuff.

From a business & product viewpoint, they have had to deal with some interesting challenges along the way (including regulatory approval, despite it not being an invasive medical procedure). It’s rare in most businesses & product development cycles that you have to convince 3 different customer groups before you can successfully sell your product. In this case, Life Whisperer need to convince the medical regulatory authorities, the end consumer (the woman/couple who are going through IVF) and the fertility clinic. Any one of those that don’t believe in what you are doing, and no sale.

There are heaps of other great things you can learn in this episode, so buckle up for a great conversation.

If you want to find out more, head to our website www.theselfmadetheory.com/podcast where you can find out more about Michelle, Presagen, Life Whisperer and IVF.

  • An interesting, “under-the-radar” story in this episode.

I first met Milorad Zecevic when I presented at the CEO Institute a few months ago. We got talking about Energy Exemplar (where he’s the VP of Sales and a shareholder) about their extraordinary success and growth.

They’ve been in business 20 years and they’ve enjoyed consistent year on year growth of around 30%.

What do they do? They’re a software company, providing the global leading Economic Modeling and Market Simulation Software for the Energy Industry, based out of Adelaide.

It’s a classic living room / University project start-up by the founder Glenn Drayton. They now have offices all over the world including London, 4 offices in USA, Singapore and Dubai.

We also talk about the need to look after yourself if you’re going to be involved in running a global business – Milorad had been to 20 countries and visited 41 cities in the 9 months up to when we recorded!

It’s an interesting company, with an interesting product – in an industry we rarely think about. But when you power up your phone to listen to this podcast, sitting behind that power is a WORLD of complexity which the average person has no idea about.

  • A great interview with husband and wife duo, Mel and Dean Flintoft. In 2007, they founded Australia Fashion Labels, a business that now has 5 fashion labels sold throughout the world, both online and through 1700 stockists in 26 countries.

As you can imagine, the fashion world has changed dramatically since 2007. In our conversation, we discuss:

Starting a business in the Global Financial Crisis with no moneyDisrupting an industry that was doing seasonal collections (4 per year), by producing 12 collections per year (500+ new products every month!)The change in retailing, including bricks & mortar, online and department storesHow to succeed in an industry that is “low barrier to entry”, but “high barrier” to success

It’s a great story – I LOVE the fact, as a husband and wife team, they work so well together. I hear plenty of stories from businesses that are family-based where being related isn’t a good thing.

  • Kelly Carpenter is the co-founder of two companies – Lookinglass and Culture Team.

I found both of her businesses fascinating (& completely different). Lookinglass is some very smart tech (both Machine Learning, computer vision and a physical Smart Mirror to detect the symptoms and progression of degenerative health conditions like Parkinson’s. The early detection of Parkinson’s disease or the complication from medication after surgery can greatly improve his prognosis.

I’m sure many of you will have in the past attending corporate training sessions/workshops …and have probably been bored-to-tears. Culture Team, taking a human-centred design approach, use gameplay to provide engaging fun and meaningful learning by custom-tailored team-building experiences.

We also talk to Kelly about her career transformation from Film Producer to Entrepreneur - I love hearing stories of people who decide, not straight out of school, but after they’ve had some life experience to completely change direction.

Jump on our website www.theselfmadetheory.com (or check out the show notes) to find ways to connect with Kelly, Lookinglass & Culture Team and how they’re helping change the world.

  • You’ve probably read in some articles about how Artificial Intelligence is going to replace your job. I’ve been reading a lot about the Future of Jobs lately, so I invited Dr Eva Balan-Vnuk, a senior business & thought leader onto the podcast to discuss this really important topic. Dr Eva holds the role of Executive Director of ICT and Digital Government for South Australia and has held other senior roles such as State Director for Microsoft.

We cover many interesting and relevant topics for all business leaders, including:

As a leader through times of change, you need to provide HOPE, TRUST, EMPATHY and STABILITYWHO is responsible for educating people for radical change – Employers? Employees? Governments?WHY DIVERSITY is important in technology organisationsRegardless of whether you’re a Corporation or Social Enterprise, you have to COMPETE with everyone to get the $’s out of people’s pockets. What’s the right TRAINING model in a world of such great change? Uni? Vocational? On The Job? Just in Time?

We also talk about promoting Tech Careers for Young Women (HerTechPath), the 4th Industrial Revolution, who gave Mark Zuckerberg the right to govern Freedom of Speech, The NDIS, Not for Profits, Ethics in business, Cyber Security.

  • Before I contacted my next guest, Toby Strong, to request an interview, I was (and still am) a heavy user of his Urban Brew coffee pod products. I love the product, their subscription-based service and their unique value-adds (and no, this isn’t a paid product endorsement).

Toby runs a business where he is both a manufacturer of his own product, as well as a manufacturer for others, a wholesaler and an online retailer.

We uncover a lot in our conversation, including:

    1. Are you BRAVE enough to have an open book policy with your staff on your profit & loss?

    2. Diversification can be very important in minimising your market forces risk…but how diverse is TOO DIVERSE?

    3. Is OWNERSHIP of “things” from a bygone era, and will we move to SUBSCRIPTION for most things in the future?

    4. For busy executives, listening to AUDIOBOOKS can be an invaluable way to turn non-productive time into positive returns.

    5. A simple “WALK & TALK” with a staff member can create a great connection with you, the CEO.

We started talking about the challenges of running a business, and particularly the roller-coaster of highs & lows (both financial and emotional)…we also cover some of Toby’s “life hacks”. The episode starts after we were talking about his introduction of environmentally friendly biodegradable coffee pods into his product range.

Until next episode….keep INNOVATING, OVERCOMING and PROSPERING

  • A double guest interview this week. Brendon and Connor, co-founders of Nuago, describe themselves as a “born in cloud” company providing IT services to their customers. They’re obviously doing something right, ranking No.7 in the Australian CRN Fast 50 award.

Lots of gold in here if you’re building a business. We discuss:

    1. Different isn’t always Better, but BETTER IS ALWAYS different

    2. If you want to be a good IT provider, stop talking about WIDGETS and start getting into your customers’ WHY

    3. The difference between working for someone and putting your HOUSE, LIVELIHOOD and FAMILY FUTURE on the line to start your own company

    4. CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT might not be talked about much anymore, but it’s important to your customers.

    5. How do you keep your FINGER ON THE PULSE when your business is growing?

You can just tell from the conversation and the passion in their voices how much providing a great experience for the customers and their employees mean to them.

I think it’s easy for leaders to focus on other things from time-to-time, and even focusing too much on what you as a leader need….but I guarantee that if you look after your team and your customers, it will return dividends.

We reference a couple of authors in our conversation, some of whose books are available on my website.

Until next time….keep INNOVATING, OVERCOMING and PROSPERING

  • In this episode, I interview Jim Whalley, who has been appointed as the Chief Entrepreneur for South Australia. Now, while it might seem strange to interview a Govt employee for a show that’s all about Founders, Entrepreneurs and Great Business people, Jim just doesn’t fit the mould of what many might consider a typical Govt Employee.

    1. He isn’t PAID! It’s a volunteer position

    2. He has a track record in building a successful business

    3. If you look at his photos on my website, and his background, you might see him as a bit of a cross between Tom Cruise and Richard Branson

    4. He’s no slow-moving bureaucrat. He’s a make it happen kind-of-guy.

Beyond this, we discuss some important & interesting topics like:

    1. Executing & planning business is not dissimilar to a FIGHTER JET MISSION ….you have to observe–orient–decide–act

    2. That EXPERIMENTATION is a much better word to use than FAILURE

    3. The first ever Visa Scheme designed to attract Entrepreneurs to Australia

    4. DODGY OPERATORS are on notice! There is no place for you in the SA Entrepreneurial community.

A big thanks to Steven Marshall and the Government for putting the investment they have into the SA Entrepreneurial community.
