  • 🛫 Mark Evers: Airline Start-up Consultant & Boeing Training Captain🛬

An old friend joins me again today. I came across Mark for the first time while sitting in the right-hand seat as a First Officer on the Boeing 737 in 2008. Mark was one of my training captains, and I consider at the top of the tree. His ability to make me feel comfortable and confident in that high workload role as a newly type-rated pilot was exceptional.

We discuss the importance of stripping away any need to prove oneself to promote others. By developing our emotional intelligence to understand ourselves, we build the capacity to make it all about promoting others. As a by-product, we can immensely improve ourselves and our lives.

Mark’s skills have extended far beyond the flight deck. He has successfully helped six airlines launch in the intense and risky aviation business through his company Aviatica Group. His knowledge of compliance and procedures, as well as his mindset, is second to none.

Mark shares his strategies for dealing with intense pressure and criticism, including taking accountability and learning from failures. The conversation explores the themes of personal growth, leadership, risk-taking, and creating a positive work environment.

  • 🛫 Episode 23 With Sarah Furness: Combat Helicopter Pilot & Author 🛬

Sarah Furness, an ex-RAF combat helicopter pilot, mother, author, public speaker, and executive coach, joins me in another fascinating conversation about mindset and human performance.

Sarah’s story of going from a teenage dream to one of very few female helicopter pilots to serve in combat is fascinating. After watching Top Gun, she wore a flying jacket and asked her dad if she looked cool. He answered that she could be a pilot, so the story began.

Sarah shares her personal experiences as a pilot and how she overcame self-doubt and imposter syndrome. We also touch on mindfulness, unitasking, and emotional intelligence.

Humility is a constant theme in her stories as she reminds us that being cool under fire is something we are not born to do but can learn to do if we commit to the training. We discuss the importance of reframing failure as a learning opportunity and the role of resilience in bouncing back from setbacks.

The conversation explores the concepts of heroes and monsters, gender stereotypes, and our internal struggles. It emphasises the importance of self-acceptance and compassion for oneself and others.

We also touch on the power of vulnerability and highlight the value of debriefing and self-reflection in learning and growing from our experiences.

Sarah is also the author of a compelling self-help book, Fly Higher, in which she shares her gripping stories, valuable guidance, and tools to help us perform with military-grade mindfulness. Links to the book can be found below.

    Key Takeaways

✈ Life is not black and white; most people are doing their best.

✈ It's important to permit yourself to have a 'monster' inside you and learn to live with it.

✈ Emotions are signals and clues that point us to areas we need to address.

✈ Compassion for ourselves and others is crucial for growth and understanding.

✈ Different situations may call for different approaches, and adapting and being flexible is important.

✈ Self-reflection and debriefing are essential for learning and personal growth. Failure should be seen as a learning opportunity, not a reflection of one's worth or capabilities.

✈ Reframing failure and setbacks as little traumas can help deal with them and move forward.

✈ Comparing oneself to others and striving for perfection can be toxic and hinder personal growth.

✈ Resilience is a valuable skill that can be developed through learning from setbacks and mistakes.

✈ Mindfulness and unitasking can help in maintaining focus and productivity.

✈ Emotional intelligence and self-awareness are essential in navigating challenges and building positive relationships.

  • 🛫 Episode 21 With Captain Christo Hudson🛬Christo joins me today for another very open and honest conversation relating to mental health, suicide prevention, and all things to do with self-development.Christo is a very experienced airline and training captain with over twenty years in the industry. His life took a massive U-turn during the COVID pandemic as the world fell at his feet. As he explains so painfully, he lost not only his income-earning capacity but also his sense of identity when the airline he worked at folded. In those months of financial struggles as a young father of four children, he sank into a dark mindset in what he calls his Bath, Beards, and Booze phase. That was until a colleague reached out to him to ask him how he was. During our conversation, Christo relates that his initial response was to do the typical male thing and pretend all was ok, but his friend insisted that he open himself up to his worrying mental state. That was the turning point, and now Christo is on a mission to prevent suicide and help people with their mental health in The Black Box Approach.Key Takeaways✈️ Sit in discomfort and choose to take action✈️ The ability to respond in any situation is a human freedom✈️ Identity can be tied to a job title, but it's essential to separate it from self-worth✈️ Reaching out to others and offering support can make a significant difference✈️ Men's mental health is often influenced by societal constructs and the need to be seen as strong✈️ Listening and holding space for others can help alleviate pain and prevent suicide✈️ Loss and the ability to cope with it are not often taught, leading to challenges in dealing with difficult situations✈️ Shame and the need to prove oneself can hinder open communication and empathy✈️ Creating a safe space for vulnerability and open dialogue is crucial for mental well-being✈️ Understanding the neurochemical processes behind emotions can help increase emotional intelligence - We all have different capacities for stress, and it's essential to understand and respond to our own stress levels.✈️ Small actions, such as smiling at someone or asking if they're okay, can significantly impact others.✈️ The Black Box approach encourages people to open up and share their experiences, even if they choose not to talk about it.✈️ Choice, responsibility, and education play a crucial role in promoting mental well-being.✈️ Taking active steps to support those affected by suicide can significantly reduce the time it takes for them to receive the help they need.Chapters00:00 Choosing Action in the Face of Discomfort03:30 Navigating Identity and Mental Health08:48 The Black Box Approach: Suicide Prevention and Support16:29 Breaking Societal Barriers for Men's Mental Health23:44 Learning to Cope with Loss and Difficult Situations28:08 Shame, Vulnerability, and Open Communication31:28 Promoting Emotional Intelligence and Well-being37:11 Understanding and Responding to Stress39:06 The Power of Small Actions49:05 The Black Box Approach: Opening Up and Sharing58:06 Choice, Responsibility, and Education in Mental Well-being01:05:14Supporting Those Affected by SuicideChristo can be found at the following links:https://www.linkedin.com/in/christohudson/https://www.linkedin.com/company/theblackboxapproach/I hope you enjoy the podcast. • 🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 20 With Graham Kelley🛬

My mate Graham joins me today for a very open discussion on anxiety and the tools that we can adopt to help deal with this normal emotion.

Graham is a senior lead in the Operations Department of a corporate jet operator. It is one of the roles in aviation that is critical to the success of an aircraft mission. Without Graham’s team, we have little chance of launching to our destination, let alone safely and efficiently.

In the heat of the moment, changes and issues must be dealt with immediately to keep the show on the road. The guys in the office constantly have to face their own emotional reactions in the heat of stress and deal with emotional pilots on the end of the phone, desperate to sort the issues out to avoid delays and the comeback from disappointed passengers.

This all adds to the potential for anxiety which Graham well recognises in himself and his team, and one of the many tools he uses is yoga, so we explore the science and potential of it as a tool for self-realisation and human potential.

We delve into our personal experiences with anxiety and stress and how we find relief through yoga and other practices. The importance of self-awareness, understanding the autonomic nervous system, and practising breathwork is emphasised, too

The conversation also addresses the shame and stigma surrounding mental health, particularly for men, and the need for kindness, vulnerability, and support in the workplace and society. We explore the importance of embracing both masculine and feminine qualities to create a balanced and harmonious life.

We emphasise the need for self-reflection, admitting mistakes, and repairing relationships and discuss the changing culture in the workplace, where empathy and understanding are becoming more valued. We also highlight the importance of curiosity, non-judgmental assessment, and emotional intelligence in challenging situations.

The conversation concludes with a reminder to enjoy life, maximise human potential, and surround oneself with positive energy.

    Takeaways

✈ Yoga is not just about physical exercise but a science for life that explores human potential and self-realisation.

✈ Understanding the autonomic nervous system and practising breathwork can help regulate stress and anxiety.

✈ There is a need to address the shame and stigma surrounding mental health, particularly for men, and create a supportive environment in the workplace and society.

✈ Kindness, vulnerability, and support are essential in promoting mental well-being and preventing chronic depression.

✈ Checking in with colleagues and offering support can have a significant impact on someone's well-being. Embrace both masculine and feminine qualities for a balanced and harmonious life.

✈ Practice self-reflection, admit mistakes, and repair relationships.

  • "The Power of Leadership"

    🛫

Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 17 With Matty Wohlers

Today, I launch with my good mate Matty on a journey discussing the

importance of self-awareness, mindfulness, and confidence in leadership.

Matty was my captain on a 2-month Boeing 767 detachment to Indonesia,

flying pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj celebrations.

It was the most wonderful experience, in and out of the flight deck. I put Matty

down as one of the people I have learnt a lot about in terms of leadership and

creating an environment that allows people to discover the best in themselves.

On one occasion, departing Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, we were radioed and

informed that an aircraft had crashed on the side of the runway at our

destination, Ujung Pandang in Indonesia. We had to decide whether to

complete the landing there or choose another destination and decided to

    continue.

It was a strange scene as we approached the airfield to see the stricken aircraft

as a clear reminder of what happens when things go wrong. That picture is a

good metaphor for life: if we choose to embrace our mistakes and those of

others with a creative mindset, the harsh lessons are invaluable. They give us a

much greater chance of launching again off the runway of possibility with an

even better chance of completing a safe, efficient and enjoyable journey.

Apart from sharing our experiences in aviation, Matty talks about his love of

freediving to highlight the value of admitting mistakes, embracing limitations,

    and working as a team.

We emphasise the need to break free from societal conditioning and selfconsciousness to reach our full potential. The conversation also touches on the value of role models, the impact of fear of judgment, and the importance of resilience.

  • Summary

Today, another fab mate from the US joined me for part one of this fascinating conversation on mindset, confidence, and well-being.

Captain David Robinson and I worked together for Nissan North America on a Gulfstream 650 a few years back, and he is currently flying a Gulfstream 450 for a private owner in the USA.

Although David is over ten years younger than me, he seems at least that much smarter than me, so I have always looked up to him for his intellectual, humorous, and emotionally aware comments in our conversations.

We discuss our experiences working together at Nissan and the importance of mindset, confidence, and teamwork in aviation. We reflect on our time as co-captains during the infamous flight from Beirut to Tokyo when Carlos Ghosn was arrested and how that event affected us mentally. We emphasise the value of humility, being proactive, and filling the pool of shared meaning in a team. We also touch on emotional intelligence, fear, and the power of choice in shaping our responses.

  • 🛫 Episode 14 with Captain & TRI Mark Blois-Brooke 🛬

My ex-chief Pilot at Tag Aviation, Mark, joins me for another fascinating chat on today’s podcast.

Mark has a CV as long as you can imagine, having started flying in the 1970’s. His first commercial roles were In the corporate/air-taxi environment, flying all types of characters to far-flung places around Europe, some of them highly dodgy. He went on to fly commercially for cargo operators such as DHL on Boeing aircraft before returning to the corporate world on Gulfstream, Challenger, and Falcon aircraft. With well over 40 years under his belt, he still flies the Falcon 7x for a private family under Tag Aviation management.

I had the unenviable position of going to Mark with my tail between my legs, having had a ramp check in Vienna a few years back.

I had come up short in some paperwork representing the correct amount of fuel on board the aircraft and had to take the need for more professionalism on the chin.

As always, the emotional discomfort of that taught me a lesson. Not living with shame but choosing to see it as a gain is one of my mottos for success in life. After the emotional feeling faded, that’s precisely what happened.

Mark is one of those characters who has so many fascinating stories to relate that he has put them to pen in the form of a book that is well worth reading.

Mark shares his impressive aviation career and insights on human factors and CRM in the podcast. Mark emphasises the importance of passion and variety in the aviation industry and the challenges and rewards of flying in the corporate world. He discusses the evolution of CRM and the need for effective communication and emotional intelligence in the cockpit. Mark also highlights the value of being friends on the flight deck and creating a supportive and inclusive environment.

Mark and I talk about the importance of resilience, learning from mistakes, and finding purpose in life. We discuss the need for professionals to work together and respect each other's ideas, even if they don't always agree. We also touch on the evolution of safety practices in the aviation and medical industries, emphasising the importance of analysing mistakes and learning from them. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the value of stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing challenges as opportunities for personal growth.

  • ‘Find Your Passion In Life’

🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 13 with Hook Hookassian🛬

Another American buddy joins me for this open chat on life in and out of the flight deck.

Hook and I became mates when we flew a Gulfstream 650 together during my secondment to Nissan North America.

He is a real giggle, and his laugh is very infectious. I have always admired his zest for life and finding passion and purpose. He is one the most sociable people I know, and that particular type of skill and intelligence is invaluable for making the most of life’s incredible opportunities.

His background is fascinating. His family emigrated to the US from Armenia when he was a young boy, and that sense of adventure inspired him to pursue his boyhood dream of becoming a pilot in the US Air Force.

Hook humbly talks about his experiences, notably his feeling of inadequacy when he was not accepted as a fighter pilot. However, he recognised it was a key moment in his development that led to another adventure and renewed sense of purpose.

Hook flew the KC 135 Stratotanker in the Air Force before moving on to Gulfstreams and taking up a role with Netjets.

We were operating as a crew together on a flight from Beirut to Tokyo, which resulted in the arrest of our CEO, Carlos Ghosn, for financial irregularities. It was a bizarre experience, with about 18 people from the state prosecution department searching every nook and cranny of the aircraft, including our crew bags. Sadly, it led to the winding up of the flight department, and most of us lost our jobs.

However, we both look back on that time with fond memories, aside from the challenges.

Hook now works for a private family flying a Gulfstream 450 in the USA.

(If you are interested in discovering more of the Carlos Ghosn story, it is the feature of a four part Apple TV+ documentary, as well as other film documentaries. Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn is available on Apple TV+)

  • ‘The Isolation Of Aviation’

🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 12 With CFA & Concierge Bree Sheehan 🛬

    Summary

My good Ozzie buddy Brie joins me for another fascinating conversation about living a healthy lifestyle in and out of the aviation environment. We explore many topics aside from the potential to feel isolated in our aviation roles as we travel worldwide.

Bree and I became mates when we worked for Nissan North America, endlessly exploring this topic at 45,000 and over many enjoyable worldwide adventures. She always makes me smile with her humour, energy, and interest in all she puts her mind to, including the human beings around her.

Bree is committed to personal development and always impresses me with her enthusiasm for finding the next chapter in her life. Her antipodean thirst for travel and adventure has taken her worldwide, working in various fields, including airlines and private/corporate aviation. She studied for a degree whilst working full-time and continues to add to her self-education CV. With her enviable communication skills, she has now branched out from her role as a corporate flight attendant to provide concierge services for global flight departments.

As I always maintain in our niche world of private aviation, Bree’s CFA role provides the linchpin between the demanding passengers in the back of the jet and the demanding flight deck crew in the front. Emotional and social intelligence is vital in this role, which Bree has in abundance.

🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 11 With Captain Oskar Maliszewski 🛬

    Summary

Another great aviation friend joins me today in this fascinating conversation.

I first met Oskar when I did freelance cover for him on a Gulfstream 650 while he was the Director Of Flight Ops at a private jet operation in Warsaw, Poland.

Oskar is another one of those tremendously humble individuals who set the bar high in our industry with his commitment to a high level of emotional intelligence, warmth and inclusivity.

We took off from London Luton airport in a Gulfstream 650 only to be faced with a main hydraulic failure, which required us to return to the airport immediately. I was proud of how we both worked together on that occasion, and it was an excellent example of how effectively human beings can operate in unison when employing a healthy mixture of professional skill and emotional intelligence.

In the podcast, we discuss leadership, confidence, and mindset in the aviation industry, and explore the importance of creating a diverse and inclusive environment, particularly in a male-dominated industry. We also discuss the challenges of rebalancing gender representation and the need for empathy and emotional intelligence in leadership.
