Hij interviewde bijna tweehonderd mensen, de laatste nog levende getuigen van de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd, in Indonesische rusthuizen, Japanse miljoenensteden en op verafgelegen eilanden. Ook in Nederland bracht zijn onderzoek tal van nieuwe verhalen aan het licht. De veelheid aan perspectieven en herinneringen weeft Van Reybrouck samen tot het aangrijpende verhaal van de Indonesische onafhankelijkheid.
