Interview: Ryan North One World Under Doom:

Doom's Duality: You’ve described Doom as "the ultimate villain" who always finds a way to win. How do you balance his intellectual, manipulative side with his more overt, imposing displays of power in this series?Vision and Timing: One World Under Doom has been in the works since 2023 and I can’t help but think this was made to be read with a new U.S. president shaking things up, am I way off base with this feeling? The Sorcerer Supreme Element: Incorporating Doom’s newfound status as Sorcerer Supreme super charges the villain yet we know we can’t have characters running around like gods
are there chinks in his armor you’re weaving into this story so that the heroes have a chance to defeat him? Squirrel girl fans must know, will she be a key component of your event?World-Building: Latveria has been shut away for some time, with it seemingly opening up in the first issue, how important to this story are any societal shifts or cultural dynamics spinning out of Doom taking over everything?Collaboration: Last time we spoke in November you were wrapping up the last issue of the arc, with some time to reflect on writing it, along with working with other creative teams for tie-ins, do you have a new perspective on what we’re in store for?Character Reactions: The Avengers and Fantastic Four have faced Doom countless times, yet Doom has been hidden away for some time, does that influence their emotional responses with Doom’s new global domination? The Mystery of Power: The series teases a mystery about how Doom convinced the world’s leaders to accept his rule, and it sort of reminded me of WWI, without giving away spoilers. Were you looking at any historical moments for inspiration to kick off his rule?Visual Storytelling: R.B. Silva’s art is a standout feature of the series, and likely he stuns consistently as I saw with issue #1, but do you have any Silva high water mark moments in any specific issues?Silly Question: If Doctor Doom were to design a reality TV show in his new United Latveria, what would it be called, and who would be its target audience?

Interview: Radiant Black Kyle Higgins, Ryan Parrott - FOC on Radiant Black 31 (Feb 3), which kicks off the "Rebuild" era of the Massive-Verse-- new jumping on points for Radiant Black and Rogue Sun (Rogue Sun #25 FOC February 17), etc.

For both: The Massive-Verse has grown into a universe full of interconnected stories. What inspired the decision to begin this new "Rebuild" era, why now? How do Radiant Black #31 and Rogue Sun #25 serve as jumping-on points for new readers? For Kyle (Radiant Black): With Marshall now fully stepping into the role of Radiant Black post-Catalyst War, what unique challenges will he face, both as a hero and as a person, in this new chapter? For Ryan (Rogue Sun): Aurie’s sudden emergence as a second Rogue Sun in issue #25 raises plenty of questions. Can you tease a bit about her background and how her relationship with Dylan will evolve? Why didn’t you renumber with #1 issues? For both: The theme of legacy plays a big role in both Rogue Sun and Radiant Black. How does the idea of who "deserves" to be a hero shape the stories you’re telling in this new era?Massive-verse movie I Am No/One update? Fun question: If Marshall and Dylan were forced to swap cities — Marshall in New Orleans and Dylan in Chicago — who would handle the switch better, and which city’s villains would give them the most trouble?Kyle I’d be remiss not to ask: Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse, anything you can tease?
  • Puuttuva jakso?

  • Check out a smattering of the questions asked in this interview below.

What sort of themes are you juggling in Seasons? What inspired you to weave these themes together, and how do they relate to the broader human experience? How did you approach building the world of Seasons, and what were some of the unique challenges in creating a story set across different landscapes and "seasons"?Your work often includes flawed and complex protagonists. What can readers expect from the characters in Seasons? You’ve collaborated with many artists over the years. What drew you to work with Paul Azaceta on this project, and how does his style complement the story?Something so endearing about the first issue is how it seems quite ordinary, yet subtle things like a guy with a jetpack reveal there’s more to this world. How do you balance showing too much or showing just enough? If you two were thrown into the world of Seasons, which of you would last the longest, and what ridiculous strategy would you use to survive? So what's The Seasons about?

Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn are the Seasons Sisters, the daughters of the world-renowned Seasons Detectives. Ten years ago, their famous parents disappeared. Left to raise themselves, the sisters formed an unbreakable bond. Now that bond is tested as the sisters fall prey to sinister forces. The youngest sister, Spring, is the last hope of saving them from a fate worse than death. Will Spring be able to piece her shattered family back together before it’s too late for them all?
RICK REMENDER (BLACK SCIENCE) and PAUL AZACETA (OUTCAST) weave an elevated tale of whimsical horror unlike anything ever experienced in comics and it all starts with this double-length premiere issue!

How do you ensure both aspects feel equally significant? You’ve said that Historia is sort of part of the DNA of the book even if it’s not cannon. Could you mention anything specfic you drew from that and where may have diverged?Recently there’s been a growing amount of WW/Cheetah shippers, does that influence your use of Barbara Minerva at all?A question from Ryan Perry, you’ve effectively used hyperviolence so that it’s something the reader can’t look away from, yet it doesn’t feel provocative. Interview: Jeremy Adams talks Aquaman with John Timms on art:

"Aquaman’s powers are evolving in this new series — can you give us more insight into how these new abilities will redefine Arthur’s role as a hero and his connection to the seas?"

"The solicitation teases mammoth water-construct Kaijus and the secrets of the 'blue.' What inspired this unique blend of mythology and high-stakes monster action?"

"Aquaman is dubbed a 'god killer' in the first issue. Can you unpack what that title means for his character arc and how it might affect his relationships and responsibilities?"

"It seems like Arthur is using monster-fighting as a way to escape his duties as king of Atlantis. How does this tension between responsibility and personal fulfillment shape the story?"

"Dagon is introduced as Arthur's guide on his journey. What can you tell us about this character, and how does he influence Aquaman’s path in this series?"

"Aquaman’s identity is often tied to his dual roles as a superhero and king. How does this series explore the balance — or imbalance — between those two worlds?"

"Will we ever see the series go full JL adventure, or is this strictly Aquaman solo missions?

"You’ve worked on iconic characters like the Flash and Green Lantern. How has your experience with those heroes informed your approach to writing Aquaman?"

"Aquaman often wrestles with themes of legacy, power, and belonging. What are some of the core themes you’re excited to explore in this new series?"

"What do you hope longtime fans of Aquaman, as well as new readers, take away from this fresh take on the King of Atlantis?"

Could you elaborate on this concept and share what inspired you to approach the adventure genre from this angle?Your protagonist Ines is a Puerto Rican archaeology student. How did you develop her character, and what aspects of her identity are central to the narrative?Skylar, could you discuss your artistic process for this comic? How did you approach visualizing the settings and characters, especially considering the cultural significance of the artifacts?17Can you share insights into your collaborative process? How did you work together to blend the narrative and visual elements seamlessly?Finders//Keepers is the final installment of The Horizon Experiment. Did this give it any unique perspectives on the overarching project?Given that each one-shot in The Horizon Experiment serves as a potential pilot, I think I know the answer based on how this issue ends but do you have plans or ideas for expanding Finders//Keepers into a full series?Vita, you've mentioned a desire to open up the action-adventure genre to more diverse protagonists. How does this project reflect your personal experiences or aspirations in storytelling? What do you hope readers will feel or think about after finishing Finders//Keepers?

Juan, pleasure to chat with you again, we last spoke in October 2022 about Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and now you’re onto TMNT #6
sir, are you living the dream?Last we spoke you talked about how you get bored easily and are always trying new things, is there anything that pops out to you that you did different with this issue?Have you been a lifelong Ninja Turtles fan? What was your first experience with the turtles? Can you take us through your issue #6 cover, with Raph fighting a foto clan on a motorcycle driving along Leo’s sword
like wow how did this idea come to be?The Turtles are together and back in New York in issue #6, would you say the city is a character in itself? How did you make it come alive? Is there anything tricky about drawing four characters that are similar, but also ever so slightly different, like how Donnie is skinny? You’re a master at the side-scrolling layouts, will we see more of those?Did Jason Aaron’s script challenge you in any surprising ways? Now that you’ve had a hand in drawing all these turtles, is there a particular one you wouldn’t mind taking on a solo book series?Spider-Man Noir, it already looks like they’re taking from your series, how pumped are you to potentially see your art on the big screen? With TMNT being a six-issue gig, can you tease what you’re working on next? Diana Faces Her Biggest Challenge Yet – Motherhood???

Throughout her life, Wonder Woman has faced some of the biggest challenges imaginable. Now, following the events of DC’s game-changing Absolute Power, Diana embarks on her next great adventure – the birth of her daughter, Trinity!

With the Absolute Power tie-in wrapped up, how does it feel to get back to your main story arc? What does Trinity mean to you, as far as her potential legacy for Wonder Woman and DC?Should we expect The Sovereign to show up, is he inherently tied to Trinity’s origin?I feel like, with the creation of Damian, DC Comics has sort of owned the aspect of child heroes, and so far you’ve seemed to tie Damian and Trinity quite a bit. Are they inherently important to each other? We’ve gotten to know Trinity via the wonderful backups with art by BelĂ©n Ortega, and notably absent are the adults. Might you be exploring where they went off to?Daniel, your art is so striking, the fight around the Washington monument is one of my favorite fights ever in comics! Extending from interiors, your covers are incredible too. How do you approach them to make them so striking, is there a starting point?Since we’re talking about birth, why do you think it’s important Wonder Woman was made of clay? Is there a symbolic reason?Tom, thoughts on Green Lantern casting news?

Can you tell us about your vision for Absolute Superman? How does this series stand apart from previous Superman stories? When starting from scratch, so to speak, was it ever overwhelming figuring out what you wanted to use from the vast Superman tapestry? What themes are you most excited to explore with Superman in this series? Are there new facets of his personality or struggles you’re aiming to highlight? The concept of social class is a strong one in the first issue, why was that so important to this character? To be honest, the social class element made me immediately think of Batman, do you think your Superman would get along with Batman? What challenges have you faced in writing Superman (though not for the first time), a character often seen as the ultimate symbol of hope and morality? What would Absolute Superman think of main universe Superman, or vice versa? The first issue seems to suggest there’s some tweaks to Superman’s abilities, or maybe how he charges up. Was there a trial and error process of figuring out this Superman’s power set?Since you’ve been developing this series more or less alongside the Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman, did the development of those series influence your approach or take at all?Is there a panel or page Rafa blew you away? What’s your thoughts on the new Superman logo?

Interview: Ryan North (STAR TREK LOWER DECKS/WARP YOUR OWN WAY out Oct 22, Fantastic Four, The Rise of Emperor Doom)

Ryan, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! You’re having the nerdiest of years, with Star Trek Lower Decks/Warp Your Own Way out Oct 22nd, the ongoing Lower Decks #1 out November 13 and Fantastic Four cresting into a huge 2025 year, what has been your favorite nerd thing you created this year?STAR TREK LOWER DECKS/WARP YOUR OWN WAY is a choose-your-own adventure! What is the process of plotting something like this? Anything you learned from Hamlet or Romeo & Juliet that opened the way for new experimentation?About how many “storylines” can someone get out of the graphic novel?Maybe this is sacrilege to ask, but do you have a favorite ending for the graphic novel? Is the STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS ongoing series a direct continuation of the animated show, or taking place at a different period?I’ve heard that Heather Antos is basically an encyclopedia of Star Trek lore – how invaluable was it to have her as your editor on this project.Footnotes, you’re one of the best at them
how does it feel to have them return!?Without spoiling anything, Lower Decks #1 touches on a fun part of Trek’s past. Are there any corners of Trek that you haven’t explored in comics that you’d love to?There’s a lot of science in FF, does Star Trek Lower Decks let you stretch your science legs in different ways? You got to visit with the The Fantastic Four: First Steps cast, how long was the visit and how much did you get to see?Do you get a sense they’re sticking to the comics at all?Considering how much science is in your titles, will The Rise of Emperor Doom also be sciencey, or is it all magic all the time? How would the lower decks crew deal with Dr. Doom? Could they withstand his might?

    Rapid Fire Question Round:

Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What was your first comic?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? When do you think your style came into its own? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Favorite superhero? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you’ve created or written, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?A genre you want to make more comics in?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

 #1

David, thanks for chatting with us about Creature Commandos! With multiple Count Crowley titles under your belt and a busy spooky season up ahead with even more comics, tell us: how’d you get attached to this project?JesĂșs HervĂĄs’ art is so pulpy, what is it about his work you dig the most for this series? It’s rude of us to ask, but do you have a favorite monster in the commandos now that you’ve scripted a few issues? This is an eclectic bunch of monsters, were there any monster types you wanted to fit in, but maybe are saving for later? We understand Zatanna will be popping up in this series! Are you a Zatanna fan, and can you tease how she fits into this tale?Gotcha question: what are your feelings on Bauhaus? You have the unique pleasure of BEING a Suicide Squad member, how might you describe the differences between that team and this one?As an actor and writer, do you read your dialogue out loud to get a feel for each character? No spoilers here, but do you have a favorite moment in Creature Commandos and if so, which issue does it take place in?If a reader wanted to brush up on any horror classics for this series - comics or otherwise - would you recommend any?You also have a story coming up in the DC Horror Presents anthology! What can you tell us about that?

Absolute Batman #1 out Oct. 9 - Second Printing October 30

The new suit seems to invoke a bat even more, would you say Absolute Batman is far more bat than man?

Scott, in a recent AMA on reddit you said you were a consultant on the Absolute line, how did that first meeting go and how long ago was it?

You also mentioned you and Nick work in your home office every few weeks, can you explain how that has made the process different, and maybe better?

Not to dig into spoilers, but you said Batman is the “small chaos in the system,” is this a book we can connect to our own world given politics, globalization, and ongoing wars?

Nick, did you have a mood board or listen to any particular music when designing the characters?

Nick, positively loved your work on East of West, would you say you’re bringing any kind of futuristic or sci-fi edge to Absolute Batman?

Does it feel important as far as in what order you introduce rogues in this new take on Batman?

What would Greg Capullo Batman think of Nick Dragotta Batman?

As an artist, how detailed are your scripts when you’re drawing the book vs working with a collaborator like Gustaffo? We know Nullhunter is inspired by the Labors of Hercules, but beyond Greek myth as a guide, do you have a world bible for this version of the future? In some ways Nullhunter reminds me of Dune with a big sweeping government in space, what were some of its inspirations? In Nullhunter, you have a way of stripping exposition to its bare essentials. What’s that process like? The Silver Coin and The Sacred Damned have some gnarly monsters in them. Do you ever find yourself pulling out an old sketchbook and dusting off a design when the right script comes along? We had Pornsak Pichetshote on the show a little while back to tell us about the Horizon Experiment, and we love the concept. How’d you come aboard?Switching gears to Frankenstein: What is it about Universal’s Frankenstein that has made this particular incarnation so enduring? With Frankenstein, you take a unique approach from a child’s perspective, was this always in your pitch, or did it come up organically?
