Delivered at the North Austin Muslim Community Center in Texas on June 28th, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan shares important insights into a powerful du'a in the Quran that invokes Allah for guidance.Before doing so, however, Ustadh Nouman lays the context for which this du'a in Surah Ali-Imran was revealed, using the backdrop of the Muslims' time in Madinah and how Allah responded to the Christians and the Jews at the time with this revelation. The beginning of the Surah establishes who Allah is, and thereafter reminds us of the limitations of our own knowledge by calling out those who falsely interpret the guidance that was revealed to them. As with most powerful lessons in the Quran, it is concluded with a powerful du'a for guidance. This profound revolution, therefore, is something we must deeply ponder whenever we feel that Islam is 'too difficult' to practice in today's society due to external pressures. In this Khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan explains the opening verses of Surah As-Saf, which was revealed after the second major military engagement of the Muslims: the Battle of Uhud. He discusses how Allah loves people who are disciplined and how the Muslims lost at Uhud due to their lack of discipline. The Surah mentions the Tasbeeh of Allah and Ustadh Nouman elaborates that the ultimate form of Tasbeeh is our prayer.Ustadh also discusses three types of people that were in Madinah at the time of Prophet ﷺ. The first type were the Sabiqoon, the foremost in faith and action. The second type included those who felt motivated when in the company of companions like Abu Bakr (RA) or Omar (RA), but when they were with the hypocrites (Munafiqoon), they felt that Islam was a burden. The third type were the Munafiqoon themselves. In this week's khutbah, at the Islamic Association of Greater Detroit, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan draws a parallel between video games and real life, highlighting the stark differences in outcomes despite similar efforts. In video games, following a set of rules consistently leads to predictable rewards and progress. If players encounter difficulties, they can easily turn to YouTube for walkthroughs or cheat codes to advance. However, real life is far more complex; two individuals may put in the same effort but achieve vastly different results. This unpredictability drives many people to look for special adhkaar to solve their problems in real life just like they look for cheat codes in video games.Ustadh notes that this search is part of a broader pursuit of happiness, where people believe that acquiring certain things will bring them joy. However, he observes that those who relentlessly chase happiness often end up being the most depressed. He emphasizes that while the pursuit of happiness itself is not inherently wrong, we tend to look for the wrong goals to be happy. So what is the right goal?
