For whatever reason, the Edmonton Oilers' schedule is so weird this season. As a result, we find ourselves in a mini bye week that isn't technically a bye week but is indeed boring us all like one. On the bright side, the lack of games meant more time for shenanigans on this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.
I started this week's podcast by discussing my excitement for this week's #NationVacation. Heading to another city to watch the Oilers play is one of my favourite things to do, and that excitement builds even further when we're going to a place I've never been before. I then changed gears a bit to talk about seeing The Book of Mormon on Friday night at the Jubilee and how it was one of the funniest nights I've had in a long time. If you've never seen that play and are a fan of South Park, you've gotta find a way to see it at least one time.
Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, there has been little to talk about since last week because of the bizarre schedule. With only two games on the schedule this week, the Oilers' news cycle has been quiet, but that doesn't mean there weren't plenty of things to talk about. Starting with Kasperi Kapanen getting claimed off waivers, the Oilers looked to add some depth to their right side. The timing of the move couldn't have been better, however, as the club is still without Zach Hyman and Viktor Arvidsson, but no one really knows why.
Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about getting way too spicy about sports opinions before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quieter this week, but I still got a healthy chuckle out of your ideas and feedback. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

Is there anything better than a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never to celebrate the midway point of the week? No, of course not. This week, I talked about Costco hot dog live, Connor McDavid's 1,000th point, Darnell Nurse being hurt, Kasperi Kapanen being claimed, and much more.
I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by recapping the response to my idea about how many days I could live on nothing but Costco hot dogs before getting bored. Unsurprisingly, people had so many takes on how this bit will go that I'm getting to a spot where I almost have to do it. From there, I spent a few minutes talking about how annoying and disappointing the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight was, and how the whole night was basically saved by the undercard.
Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started the news with a conversation about Connor McDavid's 1,000th point, and how that milestone was so bananas that I need to keep talking about it. Even though we've gotten so used to McDavid's brilliance at this stage, I will never stop beating the drum of asking people to enjoy what they're watching because it's anything but normal. I also touched on the recent eastern Canadian road trip, the team claiming Kasperi Kapanen off waivers, Darnell Nurse's injury, and everything else that's going on with the team.
Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about whining on BlueSky before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was alive with beef this week, and those back-and-forths made me laugh and laugh. If you've been listening to the podcast for any length of time, you know that I love hip hop, and beef sells records. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

Is there anything better than a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never to celebrate the midway point of the week? No, of course not. This week, I talked about Connor McDavid being one point away from 1000, Viktor Arvidsson being banged up, my excitement for the Tyson/Paul fight, and much more.
I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by recapping my idea about how many days I could live on nothing but Costco hot dogs. I was talking about this at my house the other day and was surprised by the lack of support I was getting for what could end up as funny content. I also discussed the feedback I've received so far for the new Better Lait Than Never logo I made this past week, and much to my surprise, many folks loved it.
Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started the news with another tribute to Connor McDavid, who is now only a single point away from 1000 after a four-point performance last night against the Islanders. When McDavid is at his best, there's no one more entertaining to watch in this sport, and the Islanders got a dose of what that felt like on Tuesday night. I also looked ahead at Edmonton's upcoming schedule, and with the Nashville Predators in town on Thursday, I'm banking on a big night from the Dynamic Duo.
Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about getting older before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was alive with beef this week, and that made me laugh and laugh.

This week, I talked about Connor McDavid's super-human healing powers, the Oilers' recent roster moves, recapped the Monday night game on Prime, and much more.
Starting the podcast, how could I not talk about what happened in the US last night with the presidential election? Not that I wanted to dive into politics at all, but the reaction to the results was quite a wild dive into the human experience. Moving along quickly, I then recapped Monday's Oilers game on Amazon Prime, which was the first of four nights we'll have on the streaming platform. From the product to the experience to the presentation, I offered my take on what it was like to watch hockey differently.
Keeping with the Oilers, I kicked off the news with the stunning revelation that Connor McDavid will be back in the Oilers lineup only nine days after suffering an ankle injury on his first shift against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Given that he was supposed to be out of the lineup for 2-3 weeks, seeing him on the top line at Wednesday's morning skate was certainly a surprise. Then again, should we be surprised? If there's one thing Connor McDavid has done repeatedly in his career, it's defying the odds when it comes to his recovery time, and this ankle injury was just the latest example.
Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about off-leash dogs before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quiet but mighty this week, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyway. As always, I can't help but sit back and laugh while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

The Oilers took one of their most disappointing losses in memory on Monday in Columbus, and the mood around Oil Country is back in the dumps. Is there hope? Are we doomed? Let's talk about it in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.
I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN with a look back on Friday's Pittsburgh Penguins game and how it was the most fun I've had an Oilers game in quite some time. Not only did I have a blast with the boys, but we even ended up at the casino together afterward in the hopes of great wins. I also spent a few minutes talking about the World Series and the insane moment that happened in last night's game when a Yankees fan tried to pull a ball out of Mookie Betts' hand.
Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the news that Connor McDavid will be out of Edmonton's lineup for the next 2-3 weeks with an ankle injury. While that timeline isn't as bad as it could have been for our captain, the Oilers will need a bunch of players to step up in his absence. I mean, if Monday's game against the Blue Jackets is any indication of what the team will look like without their captain, then we are in a world of trouble.
Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about other fanbases cheering for injuries before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quieter again this week, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyway. I certainly had a healthy chuckle listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

The Oilers racked up a pair of disappointing losses against the Stars and Hurricanes, and the mood around Oil Country is back in the sewer. Is there hope? Are we doomed? Let's talk about it in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.
I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by wondering aloud how it's possible that the Oilers 2024-25 season feels nearly identical to the disastrous start from a year ago. At 2-4-1 through seven games, it's not like the Oilers are down and out or anything like that, but I'm genuinely puzzled that a team this talented can allow this slow start to happen again.
Digging into what's gone wrong, I started the news by looking at the losses against Dallas and Carolina. Both of those games were well within reach for our boys, but the lack of goal-scoring is really making it difficult for the team to gain any traction. That said, I also feel like it's a matter of time before Edmonton's luck starts to turn and pucks start going in the net, but it's been painful watching them struggle to get there.
Making matters worse, some of our former friends are finding success in new markets while their old stomping grounds continue to struggle offensively. So, even though many of us believe the Oilers will turn things around, this early part of the season has been a tough pill to swallow. As the losses continue to pile up, the fanbase keeps getting more and more restless and louder about voicing their displeasure.
Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the deja-vu feelings we're all working through before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quieter again this week, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyways. I certainly had a healthy chuckle listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

It wouldn't be a Wednesday without your favourite podcast no one has ever heard of serving up a fresh episode to massage your earholes and guide you through what's left of the week.
I kicked off this week's podcast with a behind-the-scenes update from Nation HQ that had basically the whole staff cheering for Oilers losses. I know that sounds like something that shouldn't happen at a company called Oilersnation, but things tend to change when Tyler Yaremchuk makes a cat food bet. And seeing as last night's game was the deciding factor in whether or not Tyler got back into the meow mix, the results had everyone in our orbit dialled into every goal and mistake.
Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the team won their first game of the season last night against Philadelphia, but they sure didn't make it easy on themselves. Starting with two quick power play goals against, the Oilers found themselves in a hole before the first period was even half-over, and I don't think I'm talking out of school when I said the vibes were anything but bright. Fortunately, a pair of scraps from two unlikely combatants seemed to right the ship a little bit, and our boys went on to win, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't look dicey there for a minute.
Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about goaltender interference before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was a lot quieter this week, which was a significant change of pace from where we've been at over the last couple of episodes, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyways. I certainly had a healthy chuckle listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

The Oilers opened their season with a 6-0 beatdown at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets, and I don’t think I’m talking out of school when I say that this was not the start any of us wanted to see. The good news is that a bunch of the VMs that came in this week were from before that horrible first game even happened, so the podcast was still filled with hope... kinda.

After a couple of months of making up nonsense to pass the time, the Edmonton Oilers kick off their 2024-25 season tonight against the Winnipeg Jets, and that means a game day episode of Better Lait Than Never is here to capture the excitement.
With only a few hours to wait until puck drop, I cranked out a non-traditional episode of BLTN to capture the community's excitement and tee off what I hoped would be a fantastic night at Rogers Place. Having never been to a banner-raising ceremony before, I was pumped to get back to the rink and watch them hang up a reminder to commemorate an unbelievable season. No, it wasn't the banner we wanted to see go up at Rogers Place, but I was choosing to treat this one like an appetizer.
Changing gears, a lot of Oilers news has happened since the last podcast, and I tried to make as much sense of it as possible. From roster decisions to trying to make sense of the salary cap situation with Kane going on the LTIR, I walked through the week's biggest stories and offered my take on how those stories will impact the upcoming season. I mean, that was the plan at least. As you'll hear, anything to do with math is the last thing I should comment on, but I gave it the ol' college try anyway.
Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Dooks, who covered a wide range of topics. Needless to say, my man was in peak form with this voicemail as he battled his brain to come up with the right words for his complaint. Even though we never quite got to the point of the VM, I certainly had a healthy chuckle listening to him try to get his train of thought back on the rails.

We're one week away from the start of the 2024-25 NHL season, which means there was plenty to talk about on today's episode of Better Lait Than Never. This week, we're talking pre-season disasters, Darnell Nurse's return to the lineup, and working through whatever was on your mind over the last seven days in another jam-packed edition of the voicemail.
I started this week's podcast with a rant about the NHL pre-season. No, this wasn't an RSB but rather a thought I had to let out after another round of NHL stars had to leave their respective games with injuries. At this point, not only am I over the pre-season, but all these injuries have really punctuated the point that this tune-up period shouldn't be longer than a few games max.
Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I ran through the latest camp updates now that the team is starting to look a little more like the one we'll see on opening night. The Oilers will also be welcoming Darnell Nurse back to the lineup for his first pre-season game of the year, and I offered yet another set of reasons why he's going to be incredibly important to the team's success. I know there are a lot of people who fixate on his contract, but I'm thinking more about what he can do on the ice when he's at his best.
Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk and a pair of RSBs before diving into this week's lot of voicemails. Even though this week's VM segment was one of the shorter ones we've had in a while, you fantastic folks always bring the heat when it comes to dropping your takes. More importantly, having your feedback on the show is one of the most important parts of BLTN, and I'm always grateful that you took the time to comment. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

There's an Oilers pre-season game against the Jets happening tonight, which meant I had to get myself organized if I was going to record the podcast in time to get settled in for the game.
Kicking off the podcast, I started the show with some brand new music from Dangersuede after I spent the last few weeks asking why the BLTN original tunes had stopped flowing in. Seeing as I hadn't listened to the song before it made its debut on the podcast, I gave my first impressions on the new song and loved it so much I had to replay it twice. Speaking of Dangersuede, my dude brought me some of the most delicious desserts you can imagine this past week and the problem has been that I'm eating them too fast.
Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, a report by Elliotte Friedman suggests that the Oilers don't plan to keep Evander Kane on the shelf all season and that he could return to the lineup early in 2025. Seeing as that doesn't fit my plan for the organization to cheat, I wondered out loud how likely that actually is to happen. Is Kane really going to come back in February, or will there be a mysterious soft tissue type of setback that keeps him sidelined for *checks notes* another couple of months.

I also talked about the viral clip of Connor McDavid yelling the dressing room that was flying around the Internet this week, and how I thought it was great to see him get that fired up for a change. McDavid is usually so stoic in his approach to almost anything that hearing him get that animated was music to my ears. I can only imagine how much moments like that must impact his teammates given how generally calm #97 is known to be.
Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk and a pair of RSBs before diving into this week's lot of voicemails. It's Thursday afternoon, I'm late again with the show, but your favourite post is finally here after making you wait a day longer than usual. Are you excited? Of course you are.
Kicking off this week's podcast, I started with a quick admission of how excited I am that hockey is returning on Sunday, even though I already know how much I will hate watching eight pre-season games. Given that the players we actually want to watch won't be playing most of the time, it's tough to get excited about what amounts to meaningless games that are locked behind a paywall.
Turning the podcast toward training camp, I walked through the news from the first two days of on-ice sessions. From Evander Kane's need for surgery to Darnell Nurse starting off with light duties to rumours that the Oilers are interested in Rasmus Ristolainen, this season is already getting spicy, and we've barely even gotten started. The funny part about the situation is that there's already a lot going on, and that doesn't even touch on the pair of PTOs the Oilers signed this past week.
Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk and a pair of guest RSBs before diving into this week's lot of voicemails. Even though this week's VM segment was one of the shorter ones we've had in a while, you fantastic folks always bring the heat when it comes to dropping your takes. It's Thursday afternoon, and that means your favourite post is finally here after making you wait a day longer than usual. Are you excited? Of course you are.
I started this week's podcast with a quick run through of our Oilersnation annual planning meetings that I just got home from, which was also the reason why the show was late by a day. Seeing as this was the third year of these annual sessions, it's interesting to see how much the company has grown over the last 36 months and how we're not anywhere close to being done. I also decided this past week that I'm a Vikings fan now, so I walked through that decision and admitted that stretching it out as long as I did was more annoying than it was helpful.
Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the big news that came down this week was that both Darnell Nurse and Evander Kane are expected to miss the start of training camp due to injuries. Even though we all knew that Kane is banged up, hearing Nurse will be out for a while was certainly a surprise. All of a sudden, the Travis Dermott PTO started to make a little more sense from a depth perspective, no? On a more positive note, Leon Draisaitl is not exactly being shy about his want for Connor McDavid to sign an extension with the Oilers next summer, and hearing those two talk about the idea makes me feel all warm and tingly inside.
Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk and a pair of guest RSBs before diving into this week's lot of voicemails. You fantastic folks had so much to say this week that the only option I had was to record another voicemail episode to get everyone’s takes in. Whether we were talking about the Draisaitl extension, hating wasps, and everything in between, we’re getting to a point when the voicemails almost need their own episode every week. Most importantly, this is my third episode of BLTN in the last three days, so don’t ever say I don’t do anything for you.

It's Wednesday afternoon, and that means your favourite post is set and ready to massage your mind as you work your way through the back half of the week. Are you excited? Of course you are.
I started this week's podcast with a quick recap from Friday's Oilersnation Open and how this year's golf tournament was one of the greatest we've ever had. From the volunteers to the golfers to the fantastic shape the Millwoods Golf Course was in for our big day, everything about this year's tourney was fantastic. Not only did we raise a pile of money for Gregor's Grads, but we also had a fantastic day together out on the course, and I already cannot wait for next year's tournament.
Turning the podcast back to hockey, I started the news with a tribute to Johnny Gaudreau. Even though he was an opponent throughout his career, Thursday night's news was heartbreaking in every possible way. That's why I wanted to spend a few minutes talking about one of the league's best players and how going up against him as often as the Oilers did made for a fantastic rivalry. Even days later, I still can't believe it.
Changing gears, the Oilers signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year, $112 million contract extension on Tuesday, the news we've been waiting for basically all summer. As an Oilers fan my entire life, I had gotten used to our best players leaving when it came time to sign big deals, but yesterday's news basically erased all those memories from my early fandom. Not only did the Oilers retain one of the best players in the NHL, but this extension basically ensured that Draisaitl will be an Oiler for life, which is something that the older fans haven't experienced before.
Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk and a pair of guest RSBs before setting the table for tomorrow's voicemail episode of the podcast. As much as I thought I would handle the voicemail in today's episode, seeing all of the messages you amazing people dropped over the last seven days meant that a bonus episode was the only option. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

We’ve been waiting all summer for Leon Draisaitl to get his name on the dotted line for a new contract, and on Tuesday morning, we finally got the news. On Tuesday morning, the Oilers announced that their German star had signed an eight-year contract extension that carries a $14 million AAV. Whatever happened to the rumours that Leon wanted to sign in Boston? Remember those? Classic.

Your Wednesday wouldn't be the same without a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to wrap up the day and help guide you through what's left of the week. On today's podcast, I'm talking about Oilers rumours, PTO targets, betting futures, reality dating shows, and a whole lot more.
I kicked off this week's podcast with yet another conversation about reality dating shows. Not only do I love them, but I finally got through the newest season of Love Island USA, and I could not be happier about it finally coming to a close. Frankly, the seasons of that show are way too long, and it was standing in the way of watching a much better trash fire in Too Hot to Handle.
Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, it seems like the news du jour after the Holloway/Broberg offer sheets is what the Oilers can do with their newfound cap flexibility. According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, the Oilers are looking around the league for defensive upgrades, including the idea of bringing back a couple of old friends for another tour of duty. Yet, given the current depth chart, all of the options the Oilers seem to be looking at are RHD, which has plenty of us wondering if that's the right approach.
Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk and an RSB about moving companies before working through another round of voicemails that were all over the map. I'm back from vacation, and the Oilers spent the week wheeling and dealing, so I had plenty to talk about in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.
I started this week's podcast with a quick recap of my vacation to Toronto. It was incredibly relaxing until I ran into some travel delays. From seeing blink-182 again to Niagara Falls to driving around the city, I got up to a lot despite not being there for very long. That said, I think a week in the 6ix is my absolute limit, and I think it's important to add that it's incredibly nice to be back in Edmonton. Just me? Possibly.
Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I started the news with a look at the Broberg/Holloway offer sheet situation that reached its conclusion yesterday morning. After a week of waiting, speculation, and a handful of moves by the team, the Oilers opted not to match the Blues' offers on their young players, and I wanted to talk about why they chose to let both guys walk. I also looked at the other trades that happened this past week, including the Cody Ceci deal everyone's been waiting years to see and the trade to bring in Vasily Podkolzin from Vancouver. Despite being in August, this last week was a spicy one for the Oilers.
Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk, an RSB about airline travel, and worked through another round of voicemails that were all over the map yet again. The good news is that today's voicemails were a mixed bag of topics, which is always fun from my side of the microphone. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

I'm supposed to be on vacation this week, but the St. Louis Blues came along and ruined things before I was even able to have a coffee this morning. *spits*
Kicking off this week's podcast, I started the show with a quick recap of what my vacation plans were supposed to be and how this morning's news really threw a wrench into my Tuesday plans. The good news is that I'm always down to yell about the Oilers, and since it's been forever since we've gotten any news, why not poke my head out of my pillow fort to talk about Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg?
One thing I know for sure is that these offer sheets were the last thing the Oilers needed right now, which is why the Blues actually pulling the trigger on them is all the more annoying. Even though St. Louis didn't do anything wrong, it almost seemed like tendering offer sheets was a no-no on the GM's good guy guide to the galaxy, making today's news all the more surprising. Of course, it also didn't help to read how other fanbases are basically dancing in the street because someone is trying to screw Edmonton over. Hate us 'cause they ain't us? Possibly.
Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk, a guest RSB, and another round of voicemails that were all over the map again, especially with where we're at in the off-season news cycle. The good news is that today's voicemails were a wild mixed bag of topics, which is always fun from my side of the microphone. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

Just when I was enjoying the McWedding photo dump from Vogue, the St. Louis Blues had to come and drop a turd in the punchbowl with their duelling offersheets on Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Instead of going back to bed as I should have, I decided to fire up the Rodecaster and knock out a short emergency episode of the podcast to talk about what's happened, what the Oilers' options are, and what I think they'll do over the next handful of days.
