  • It’s another chapter in The Dialogue Series - A chill ‘n chat with authors, fellow podcasters, musicians, and more. Our guest is Songfacts founder and owner Carl Wiser.

If you love classic rock trivia and love finding out the stories behind your favorite classic rock songs and bands, you probably know about the website Songfacts.com. Songfacts is a music-oriented website that gives you the stories behind songs and lyrics, how and when they were recorded, and so much more. You can search by category like songs about cars, songs inspired by movies, songs inspired by the works of Shakespeare. The list goes on and on. It also has a featured quiz, today’s top 10 facts, artists, lyrics, and categories, and a This Day In Music calendar.

Songfacts also features exclusive articles and interviews. The journalists who work for the site have interviewed thousands of artists and songwriters to get the facts behind the songs, including Greg Prato who has been on the Booked On Rock podcast many times. The site was launched in 1999 by Wiser, a Connecticut rock DJ who created the list as a database to prepare for his radio show before making it a website for all of us classic rock fanatics to visit. It’s one of my original favorite music info sites and I’m not alone. In 2002 it was chosen as a "Yahoo! Pick". The August 2004 issue of Men's Journal listed Songfacts as one of the "100 Best Websites for Guys". USA Weekend has praised it as "a virtual Behind the Music". I reached out to Carl to tell us more about the website, some of his favorite stories he’s found for the site, his favorite books on rock, and ones he would love to be written but haven’t yet. So let’s get down to the facts and talk Songfacts with Carl Wiser!

  • This episode’s guest is author Janet Bostic-Williams. She, along with Selwynn Milborrow, have just released a new novel titled Operation Gratitude: Kill Colonel Tom Parker.

Here’s the description of the book:

How far would you go to protect someone you love who cannot see the life or death danger they are facing? Elvis Presley is beloved worldwide, but none are as devoted as Liz Phillips. He communicates with her through his music and movies, and she knows in her soul that he is pleading with her to help right the wrongs those surrounding him commit. She must protect and save him from harm.

The swinging ’60s have turned into the sinister ’70s for Liz as an overzealous fanatic realizes the danger her idol Elvis Presley faces from those around him. Liz and her new boyfriend, Trey, feel duty-bound to come to his aid and take matters into their own hands to right the wrongs he’s suffered.

There is only one plausible solution for the two of them to rescue him from the hypnotic trap in which she feels he is ensnared. She and Trey take on the role of the white knight to free the King from evil for the good of all worldwide. However, as she quickly discovers, the suffering involves more than Presley as confusion reigns.

All that glitters is not gold, and things are not always as they seem. There are always consequences. I discussed with Janet the book’s plot, how she came up with the story idea, and how she went about creating the story.

  • Sean Kelly & Mark Walton are this episode’s guests. Sean is the author of White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story, the authorized biography of the Continental Drifters due September 27th. Mark is the band’s bassist and founding member. The book follows ten disparate musicians from humble beginnings at a dive bar residency in Los Angeles through lineup changes, addiction, marriages, divorces, and industry letdowns.

The Continental Drifters, composed of members of The Bangles, The Cowsills, The Dream Syndicate, The dB's, and more, found each because they'd been burned by the music industry and sought refuge in a freewheeling environment where they could experiment without constraint. When everything fell apart in New Orleans a decade later, they ended up with so much more.

  • Our guest is Steve Moriarty, former drummer of the band The Gits and author of the new book Mia Zapata and The Gits: A Story of Art, Rock, and Revolution.

The Gits, led by their charismatic frontwoman Mia Zapata, formed in Ohio before joining the burgeoning Seattle music scene of the early 90s. They were on the brink of international stardom when, on July 7, 1993, just days before their third US tour, Mia was brutally murdered. Her death came as a shock to the Seattle music scene and eventually became a national story. It would be a decade before her killer was arrested. During that time, the focus of Mia’s story shifted further and further away from her talents and the music she created with The Gits. In this book, Steve Moriarty is determined to shift the focus from Mia's tragic end back to the art she and The Gits created, recounting their journey from their first meeting at Antioch College in 1985 to their rise in the Seattle music scene. Steve narrates the band’s struggles, their inspirations, and the camaraderie that fueled their music, as well as the band's tours and performances alongside iconic acts like Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Joan Jett.

  • Rock & roll journalist, author, and photographer Michael Goldberg is back on the podcast. He’s got a brand new book titled Jukebox: 1967-2023 Photographs.

Michael is best known as a writer, but for over 50 years he’s also been photographing musicians and the photos in Jukebox are drawn from the thousands he’s taken over the years. Included are photos of the Sex Pistols, Devo, the Clash, Bruce Springsteen, Jim Morrison, Lou Reed, Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters, Patti Smith, the Who, Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Grace Slick and Paul Kantner, Tom Waits, The Ramones, and many many more.

Most of the photos in this book have never been seen before, including rare 1970 photos of Jerry Garcia in his Larkspur home months before recording began for the group’s classic album, American Beauty. Some of the photographs were taken at the homes of the artists or in their hotel rooms. The Ramones photograph was shot from the doorway of Goldberg’s room at the Tropicana in L.A. Michael is here to share some stories behind the photos in the book.

  • Our guest is veteran music publisher and industry expert Randall Wixen, who has just released the fifth edition of his book The Plain and Simple Guide To Music Publishing.

Music publishing is one of the most complex parts of the music business, and yet it can be the most lucrative area of income for musicians. Wixen presents a clear, concise approach on how music publishing works today. The book includes a foreword by Tom Petty, among the many who put their trust in Wixen with their music catalog. Wixen is one of the most respected names in the music industry. He’s the founder of Wixen Music Publishing, Inc. in Los Angeles. With a sister company, Wixen Music UK Ltd. in London, the companies administer the song catalogs of many top artists from the last 50 years, ranging from George Harrison, the Doors, Neil Young and Tom Petty, to the Black Keys, Andrew Bird and Fitz & The Tantrums.

Randall gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the music publishing business in this interview plus his thoughts on the recent legal battle between Daryl Hall and John Oates, the famous 1984 lawsuit where John Fogerty was being sued for stealing a song he wrote himself, the Vanilla Ice vs Queen legal battle over his use of the song "Under Pressure", and more. This is a fascinating look at the side of the music business few know.

  • Andrew Darlington is the author of the brand new book The Small Faces and The Faces: Every Album, Every Song.

They started out as a mod fourpiece with Steve Marriott on lead vocals. With hit singles including “Itchycoo Park”, “Lazy Sunday”, “All Or Nothing”, and “Tin Soldier”, they evolved into one of the UK’s most successful bands by the end of the 60s. After Marriott left the band to form Humble Pie, the remaining members Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan, and Kenney Jones joined forces with singer Rod Stewart and guitarist Ronnie Wood to start a new era as Faces. The band’s 1971 album A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse, became a worldwide hit, thanks to the single, "Stay with Me". But by the mid-70s, Faces was no more and the members would go on to forge new phases of their careers, most notably Rod Stewart. But the music of the Small Faces and Faces is not forgotten. In the latest book in Sonicbond’s On Track series, Darlington lays out the full story of the Small Faces and Faces song-by-song, from the very start, to the very end.

  • It’s another chapter in The Dialogue Series - A chill ‘n chat with authors, fellow podcasters, musicians, and more. Our guest is Great White guitarist and founding member Mark Kendall.

Kendall is the founding member of the the Grammy nominated band whose sold over 10 million albums worldwide, has six Top 100 Billboard hits including the top ten single “Once Bitten, Twice Shy”, nine Top 200 Billboard albums, and two platinum albums. Kendall took some time out during Great White’s summer tour to talk about his days growing up in Huntington Beach, California, the artists and bands who influenced him, the formation of Great White, their rise to fame by the end of the 80s and the stories behind the biggest hits including “Rock Me”, “Save Your Love”, “Once Bitten Twice Shy”, “House Of Broken Love”, “Mista Bone”, and “Call It Rock & Roll”. I also asked Kendall if he’s got some favorite rock and roll books in his library and if he ever plans on writing a book.
