The Brand Spanking You Podcast- where we talk about how branding your business is more related to personal growth than you realize. In this week’s episode, we explore the notion of “talent.” Is it something you’re born with, or something you develop over time? (Hint, nobody is born with the ability to win grand slams or paint a masterpiece…).So if talent can be cultivated, what does this have to do with personal branding? Turns out, a lot. Because if you’re holding yourself or your brand back for lack of talent, you’re selling yourself short. And denying the world something totally unique and inspiring - YOU.

This episode discusses topics like…
Why everything starts with imagination- even if you don’t consider yourself “creative”.
The lie that there is a separation between artists, musicians, (”typical” creatives), and the rest of the world. We ALL have the same creative superpowers
How creating art, music, writing, storytelling, etc. is not the goal. It’s the tool that offers you lessons on how to show up in the world and excel.
That making art, or being creative can be ANYTHING. We get to decide what fuels our imagination.
The assumptions we all have about creativity & art, and how we can ditch those in order to tap into deeper levels of ourselves.
How the way we use our physical voice, directly impacts how we show up in the world and allow ourselves to shine.
Why trying to look and sound like others you see online is a form of self-abandonment that keeps us stuck. And how to let this go by tapping into your unique form of self-expression.
Why trying to “figure out the formula” will never work, and how to use creativity and imagination to find your OWN “formula.

This episode discusses topics like…
My love (and now mostly) hate relationship with Instagram
Why I loved using Instagram for my business when it first came out
Breaking up with Instagram and consciously deciding not to use it as a marketing channel for my business.
The difference between curating follows on IG to give yourself a little feel-good escapism vs consuming content on Instagram that leads to comparison and bad mental health and mindset.
the mindset of consciously making a decision to say no vs not doing something and allowing negative self-talk to sabotage yourself.
Having the discernment to recognize marketing strategies that are aligned with your unique personality, and then going all-in on those channels or strategies instead of trying to make a certain kind of social media marketing work for you because that’s what everyone else is doing.
The importance of taking the time to collect data when you try something new, and how you’ll most likely fail or get a lot of rejection, but that doesn’t mean it’s not working.
The specific false beliefs or lies we tell ourselves that keep us from saying no to doing something that isn’t aligned with our business.
The marketing strategies I’ll be using to replace Instagram. Mainly: Blogging, Pinterest, in-person marketing, directly reaching out to people/asking for the sale.

This episode discusses topics like…
How modern communication and technology go against the way we were designed to socialize as humans and what this has to do with our fear of visibility.
Why the level of vulnerability or authenticity you share online has nothing to do with the level of income you can make
How identifying and clearing the specific, subconscious lies we tell ourselves can help us immediately shift things and get results
What the “helpers paradox” is, and why it shows up for coaches & healers so much.
What we get wrong (and backward) about setting boundaries, & how it’s related to the imposter complex.
The spiritual root of procrastination.
Why doubt in what you do is actually a good thing to embrace and explore.

What if, instead of letting comparison-itis stop you in your tracks, you could use what others do as PROOF that you could do it too?
That’s exactly what this week's guest, Bari Ackerman has done over the past 20 years as she’s built her painting, fabric design, art licensing, and home decor business.
Whenever she saw somebody else doing something, she allowed herself to believe that it meant it was possible for her too.
And this attitude has served her well. She now has her celebrated, signature floral style licensed on furniture (Joybird), rugs (Loloi Rugs), fabric (Art Gallery Fabrics), wallpapers, bedding and more.
She’s also been featured in House Beautiful, HGTV Mag, TodayShow.com, Better Homes and Gardens, House and Home, Phoenix Home and Garden, AD Italia, and many more.
Bari’s most recent book, Bloom Wild (Abrams 2020), is on the Book Authority list of 100 best interior design books.
This was a delightful conversation, and we meandered through so many juicy topics.
This episode discusses topics like…
How getting fired from her job over 20 years ago may have been the best gift ever
How the mindset of “if somebody else can do it, so can I” has propelled her into achieving things she couldn’t even have imagined at the beginning of this journey
Battling with body image issues, but not letting that keep her from showing up on social media.
What “paint through the ugly” means, and how you can apply it to your own business & life whether or not you’re a creative.
The massive uplevel she went through creating her home decor book, and the lessons you can learn from it.

This episode discusses topics like…
Why it’s such a relief when you finally give yourself permission to do things in a way that’s aligned with your energy and values.
How going through a divorce 14 years ago fast-tracked my personal growth, and how the lessons I learned then continue to inform the decisions I make now- even in places like my business.
How our conditioning, societal expectations, and wanting to follow the rules, lead to “waiting for permission” when we intuitively know it’s time to make a change or go in a different direction.
What it means to recognize when you have all the information to move forward but are hesitating to avoid discomfort.
Why slogging and resenting your way through your to-do list will never lead to the results you’re after.

This episode discusses topics like…
The huge gap Erica saw in the marketplace for her clients, and why she decided to shift her entire business model in order to fill it.
Her thoughts on managing your mindset around other people’s opinions of you if you use social media to grow your business.
How Erica comes up with a seemingly endless stream of unique offer/business ideas simply by contemplating the question “what are people ACTUALLY asking for that doesn’t seem to be available on the market.”
How mindset work and ideas are great, but that she was seeing people were still having issues executing- and what her new business model aims to do about that.
Why Erica is such a big fan of collaboration for business growth and how she builds it into her business.

THIS EPISODE DISCUSSES TOPICS LIKE:
Why even if you “think” you’re not creative, you’re still tapping into the skillsets that make good creatives great if you’re starting or running your own business.
Being willing to embrace the creative process, and sucking at things when you start doing anything new.
How the creative process is messy and complicated, and while strategies & tips are helpful, there will always be a winding path to success.
How knowing that things take time & experimentation means that you don’t have to throw everything out or think you’re failing if something doesn’t resonate 100% right from the start.
Why showing up to talk and share before you’re ready or even have any idea what the big picture vision is, is so important.
How constriction and compromise can actually lead to more creativity and better products, offers, and content.
Embracing the “gap” and frustration between your big vision and your current skillsets & resources.

Why this basic human need for belonging & community can actually become a hindrance when building a personal brand.

How to start building up emotional pain tolerance in order to step into new roles & possibilities in your life and biz that will cause you to stand out.
