  • "If you say no, early in the cycle of oppression, and you mean what you say (which means you state your refusal in no uncertain terms and stand behind it), then the scope for oppression on the part of the oppressor will remain properly bounded and limited. The forces of tyranny expand inexorably to fill the space made available for their existence." 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Dr. Jordan B. Peterson

    13 The Lord says:

    “These people come near to me with their mouth

    and honor me with their lips,

    but their hearts are far from me.

    Their worship of me

    is based on merely human rules

    they have been taught.

    14Therefore once more I will astound these people

    with wonder upon wonder;

    the wisdom of the wise will perish,

    the intelligence of the

    intelligent will vanish.”

    15 Woe to those who go to great depths

    to hide their plans from the Lord,

    who do their work in darkness and think,

    “Who sees us? Who will know?”

    16 You turn things upside down,

    as if the potter were thought to

    be like the clay!

    Shall what is formed say to the

    one who formed it,

    “You did not make me”?

    Can the pot say to the potter,

    “You know nothing”?

    A Song of Praise

    1 In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

    We have a strong city;

    God makes salvation

    its walls and ramparts.

    2 Open the gates

    that the righteous nation may enter,

    the nation that keeps faith.

    3 You will keep in perfect peace

    those whose minds are steadfast,

    because they trust in you.

    4 Trust in the Lord forever,

    for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.

    5 He humbles those who dwell on high,

    he lays the lofty city low;

    he levels it to the ground

    and casts it down to the dust.

    6 Feet trample it down—

    the feet of the oppressed,

    the footsteps of the poor.

    7 The path of the righteous is level;

    you, the Upright One, make the way

    of the righteous smooth.

    8 Yes, Lord,walking in the way of your laws,

    we wait for you;

    your name and renown

    are the desire of our hearts.

    9 My soul yearns for you in the night;

    in the morning my spirit longs for you.

    When your judgments come upon the earth,

    the people of the world learn righteousness.

    10 But when grace is shown to the wicked,

    they do not learn righteousness;

    even in a land of uprightness they

    go on doing evil

    and do not regard the majesty of the Lord.

    11 Lord, your hand is lifted high,

    but they do not see it.

    Let them see your zeal for your

    people and be put to shame;

    let the fire reserved for your

    enemies consume them.

    12 Lord, you establish peace for us;

    all that we have accomplished youhave done for us.

    13 Lord our God,

    other lords besides you have ruled over us,

    but your name alone do we honor.

    14 They are now dead, they live no more;

    their spirits do not rise.

    You punished them and brought them to ruin;

    you wiped out all memory of them.

    15 You have enlarged the nation, Lord;

    you have enlarged the nation.

    You have gained glory for yourself;

    you have extended all the bordersof the land.

    16 Lord,they came to you in their distress;

    when you disciplined them,

    they could barely whisper aprayer.

    17 As a pregnant woman about to give birth

    writhes and cries out in her pain,

    so were we in your presence, Lord.

    18 We were with child, we writhed in labor,

    but we gave birth to wind.

    We have not brought salvation tothe earth,

    and the people of the world havenot come to life.

    19 But your dead will live, Lord;

    their bodies will rise—

    let those who dwell in the dust

    wake up and shout for joy—

    your dew is like the dew of themorning;

    the earth will give birth to her dead.

    20 Go, my people, enter your rooms

    and shut the doors behind you;

    hide yourselves for a little while

    until his wrath has passed by.

    21 See, the Lord iscoming out of his dwelling

    to punish the people of the earth for their sins.

    The earth will disclose the blood shed on it;

    the earth will conceal its slain no longer.

    Praise to the Lord

    1 Lord, you are my God;

    I will exalt you and praise your name,

    for in perfect faithfulness

    you have done wonderful things,

    things planned long ago.

    2 You have made the city a heap of rubble,

    the fortified town a ruin,

    the foreigners’ stronghold a city no more;

    it will never be rebuilt.

    3 Therefore strong peoples will honor you;

    cities of ruthless nations will revere you.

    4 You have been a refuge for the poor,

    a refuge for the needy in their distress,

    a shelter from the storm

    and a shade from the heat.

    For the breath of the ruthless

    is like a storm driving against a wall

    5 and like the heat of the desert.

    You silence the uproar of foreigners;

    as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud,

    so the song of the ruthless is stilled.

    6 On this mountain the Lord Almighty

    will prepare

    a feast of rich food for all peoples,

    a banquet of aged wine—

    the best of meats and the finest of wines.

    7 On this mountain he will destroy

    the shroud that enfolds all peoples,

    the sheet that covers all nations;

    8 he will swallow up death forever.

    The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears

    from all faces;

    he will remove his people’s disgrace

    from all the earth.

    The Lord has spoken.

    9 In that day they will say,

    “Surely this is our God;

    we trusted in him, and he saved us.

    This is the Lord, we trusted in him;

    let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

    The Lord’s Devastation of the Earth

    1 See, the Lord isgoing to lay waste the earth

    and devastate it;

    he will ruin its face

    and scatter its inhabitants—

    2 it will be the same

    for priest as for people,

    for the master as for his servant,

    for the mistress as for her servant,

    for seller as for buyer,

    for borrower as for lender,

    for debtor as for creditor.

    3 The earth will be completely laid waste

    and totally plundered.

    The Lord has spoken this word.

    4 The earth dries up and withers,

    the world languishes and withers,

    the heavens languish with the earth.

    5 The earth is defiled by its people;

    they have disobeyed the laws,

    violated the statutes

    and broken the everlasting covenant.

    6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth;

    its people must bear their guilt.

    Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,

    and very few are left.

    7 The new wine dries up and the vine withers;

    all the merrymakers groan.

    8 The joyful timbrels are stilled,

    the noise of the revelers has stopped,

    the joyful harp is silent.

    9 No longer do they drink wine with a song;

    the beer is bitter to its drinkers.

    10 The ruined city lies desolate;

    the entrance to every house is barred.

    11 In the streets they cry out for wine;

    all joy turns to gloom,

    all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.

    12 The city is left in ruins,

    its gate is battered to pieces.

    13 So will it be on the earth

    and among the nations,

    as when an olive tree is beaten,

    or as when gleanings are left

    after the grape harvest.

    14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy;

    from the west they acclaim

    the Lord’s majesty.

    15 Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord;

    exalt the name of the Lord, the God of Israel,

    in the islands of the sea.

    16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing:

    “Glory to the Righteous One.”

    But I said, “I waste away, I waste away!

    Woe to me!

    The treacherous betray!

    With treachery the treacherous betray!”

    17 Terror and pit and snare await you,

    people of the earth.

    18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror

    will fall into a pit;

    whoever climbs out of the pit

    will be caught in a snare.

    The floodgates of the heavens are opened,

    the foundations of the earth shake.

    19 The earth is broken up,

    the earth is split asunder,

    the earth is violently shaken.

    20 The earth reels like a drunkard,

    it sways like a hut in the wind;

    so heavy upon it is the guilt of

    its rebellion

    that it falls—never to rise again.

    21 In that day the Lord will punish

    the powers in the heavens above

    and the kings on the earth below.

    22 They will be herded together

    like prisoners bound in a dungeon;

    they will be shut up in prison

    and be punished after many days.

    23The moon will be dismayed,

    the sun ashamed;

    for the Lord Almighty will reign

    on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,

    and before its elders—with great glory.

    making widows their prey

    and robbing the fatherless.

    3 What will you do on the day of reckoning,

    when disaster comes from afar?

    To whom will you run for help?

    Where will you leave your riches?

    4 Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives

  • MARK 5Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman

    21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”

    24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”

    29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

    31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

    35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”

    36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” 37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”

    40 But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

    The Darkness Turns to Light

    19 When someone tells you toconsult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a peopleinquire of their God?

    Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?

    20 Consult God’s instructionand the testimony of warning. If anyone does not speak according to this word,they have no light of dawn.

    21 Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land;when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God.

    6 You, Lord,have abandoned your people,

    and embrace pagan customs.

    7 Their land is full of silver and gold;

    there is no end to theirtreasures.

    Their land is full of horses;

    there is no end to their chariots.

    8 Their land is full of idols;

    they bow down to the work of theirhands,

    to what their fingers have made.

    9 So people will be brought low

    and everyone humbled—

    do not forgive them.

    20 In that day people will throw away

    to the moles and bats

    their idols of silver and idols ofgold,

    which they made to worship.

    21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks

    and to the overhanging crags

    from the fearful presence ofthe Lord

    and the splendor of his majesty,

    when he rises to shake the earth.

    partners with thieves;

    they all love bribes

    and chase after gifts.

    They do not defend the cause ofthe fatherless;

    the widow’s case does not comebefore them.

    29 “You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks

    in which you have delighted;

    you will be disgraced because ofthe gardens

    that you have chosen.

    30 You will be like an oak with fading leaves,

    like a garden without water.

    31 The mighty man will become tinder

    and his work a spark;

    both will burn together,

    with no one to quench the fire.”

  • MARK 4:1-20

    The Parable of the Sower

    1 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said:

    3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.

    6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”

    9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

    10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that,“ ‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’ ”

    13Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy.

    17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”
