Jonathan Long: Above the line is posters, things you see in magazines or newspapers or television or cinema or radio. There's also a huge separate area below the line, which is stuff which is delivered directly to houses. above the line advertising - reklama, která se šíří masovými médii (v časopisech, novinách, v televizi, v kině či rádiu) below the line advertising - reklama, která je doručována přímo do domácností. (dopisy, které přicházejí poštou... letáky a podobně)

Jonathan Long: Well, basically the copywriter is in control of any kind of words which appear in an advert. The art director will generally be trained in graphic design and will have a better visual imagination. copywriter - je zodpovědný za veškerý text reklamy art director - je zodpovědný za vizuální stránku reklamy nebo reklamní akce (studoval s největší pravděpodobností nějakou grafickou školu a měl by mít dobrou vizuální představivost)

Mark Hastings: I think they’re looking for that - great economists’ word - ‘economies of scale’. And to that extent, big is better because it enables you to buy things cheaper, it enables you to reach more customers, so it enables you to make more money. The company that has a footprint in lots of different areas of the world is less likely to suffer recession or downturn, the real effects of that, in one particular country. economies of scale - business ve velkém je lepší, protože umožňuje nakupovat za nižší ceny, proniknout k většímu počtu zákazníků, a tím vydělat víc peněz (úspory z velkosériové výroby) recession - pokles ekonomické aktivity footprint - být přítomen na trhu (hovorový obrat)

Raymond Perrier: A trade name and a trademark is more or less the same thing: the registered right to use a name on a product. Gives you rights over a technology or a process. So a patent enshrines the right - the exclusive right - to use a technology, or to use a process, or to use an ingredient and to stop anybody else from using the same technology or the same ingredient without your permission. trade names - název/ jméno, pod kterým firma obchoduje trademarks - slovo, fráze, slogan a nebo symbol, s kterým je ztotožňován výrobek a nebo služba určité firmy – obchodní značka patent - patentem se právně chrání technologie a nebo výrobní proces, zajišťuje firmě výhradní práva na určitou technologii, proces nebo složku, zabraňuje tomu, aby je jiný výrobce užíval bez povolení.

Raymond Perrier: A brand really is what lies in the mind of the consumer, the perception that is in the mind of the consumer that they bring together when they see a combination of a name, a colour, the way the lettering is shown, advertising and so on. What happens there is that it seems that the perception in the minds of the consumer is not tied to a specific product but to an idea or to a way of doing business. brand - soubor hodnot, které si zákazník spojuje s výrobkem (celkový dojem, který vyvolává kombinace názvu, barev, písma - celé propagační kampaně) stretching the brand - některé značky nevyvolávají představu jednoho konkrétního výrobku, ale evokují celkový image, navozují celkový způsob myšlení, způsob businessu. Pod takovou značkou se dají prodávat různé výrobky. (Porshe prodává nejen auta, ale i hodinky, kola a sluneční brýle)

Janet Brook: Venture capital is really investing in small companies, and the term ‘venture’ really relates to the fact that it was seen when it started as a higher-risk type of investment. The people who want capital are businesses which want to grow. They need capital to invest in buildings, machinery, perhaps human capital, they want to take on more staff. venture capital - riskantní investice (například do malých podniků), rizikový – spekulativní kapitál human capital - investice do lidí – lidský kapitál
-
Janet Brooks: In financial terms capital is money which is invested in the productive assets of any business. In its purest form the capitalist means that you are becoming an owner of a company. You’re therefore sharing in the risks of failure and also the benefits of success. capital - jsou finance investované do produktivních aktiv (do vlastnictví toho či kterého podniku) capitalist - vlastník podniku, který se tedy podílí na riziku neúspěšného podnikání, ale také na výhodách úspěchu

Arthur Millner: The auctioneer generally starts quite a little bit below the reserve price and the reserve is the price below which the seller doesn’t want to let the object sell. If there is somebody who’s seriously interested in the object and starts bidding, the auctioneer will bid against him up to the reserve price. And then after that it’s simply a matter of the buyers competing against each other for the object. reserve (price) - je cena, kterou před aukcí stanoví prodejce, cena pod kterou nechce jít. Dražit se začíná malinko pod nejnižší stanovenou cenou bidding - činit nabídku (dražitel zvyšuje cenu, až to dotáhne na reserve price, potom už se mezi sebou přebíjejí nabídkami kupující)
-
Arthur Millner: The most normal way is simply for me to charge a small percentage for going in there and bidding on their behalf. There is always an element of risk and that’s one of the reasons why the idea is to sell at quite a large mark-up, which sometimes shocks people who don’t understand the art market. Because for everything you sell and make quite a large percentage on, there are also a large number of things which remain unsold after maybe several years and you perhaps after all that time end up selling them at a considerable loss. commission - provize mark-up - rozdíl mezi cenou, kterou obchodník za zboží zaplatí, a cenou, za kterou ho prodá.

Nick Robbins: In Korea there is now a charge on waste, in terms of the volume of waste that households throw away. This has been a quite profound incentive for consumers, for householders to actually recycle waste, to reduce waste generation and that has cut waste by about a third over a few years. In many or most developing countries they actually want to achieve sustainable development - not just mining their minerals, logging their forests and going for rapid growth of industry. They realise that they actually need to factor in the environmental issue now. recycling - v Koreji zavedli poplatek za domácí odpad (čím více odpadu, tím větší poplatek).

Peter Boizot: There are a lot of things that the local franchisee would know much better than we would know - local hygiene regulations, local legal ... licensing regulations and so forth. We’re looking more these days for people that are already in the business of catering. franchise - dohoda/ licence, která poskytuje uživateli výlučné právo vyrábět a nebo prodávat výrobky v určité oblasti (městě, kraji a nebo i celé zemi). Některé obrovské společnosti – jako McDonalds nebo Body Shop prodávají licence, pronikly a expandovaly do nových oblastí. Jedním z důvodů, proč firmy prodávají franchise, je nesporný fakt, že místní uživatel licence - zná místní podmínky na trhu daleko lépe než mateřská firma (hygienická nařízení, právo, směrnice...) franchisee - uživatel licence
-
Peter Boizot: And in return for that we took a percentage - I think in those days it was 4% of their net turnover. So it wasn’t really related to their profits, it was just related to their turnover....they will be able to develop and monitor and control our name. profits - zisk; Pizza Express si účtuje 4 procenta z čistého obratu (nikoliv zisku) turnover - obrat - hodnota celkového ročního výdělku

Sue Merton: It’s basically concerned with looking after people. And it’s for the human resource specialist to focus on the people while other managers perhaps are looking at the finance and the marketing and the other aspects of business. The first thing to do is to make sure you know what the job is, so we usually have a job description. human resources - lidské zdroje - zaměstnanci podniku/ organizace.

Sue Merton: When there is less work of a particular kind, a situation arises of redundancy. Most organisations will try to redeploy the person concerned - find another job of similar pay, similar activities, similar duties. That’s not always possible. redundancy - je situace, která nastává v případě, když ubude práce (určitého druhu) to redeploy - někdy je možné nadbytečnému/vyhozenému zaměstnanci najít v tom samém podniku/organizaci jiné – vhodné místo – s podobnou náplní, za podobný plat.

Duncan Campbell Smith: Western companies typically with the technological know-how and the access to capital are getting together with smaller companies based in emerging markets which have the local knowledge and the local manpower. joint venture - (venture znamená projekt/ podnik, který v sobě zahrnuje riziko ale zároveň i příležitost).
-
Duncan Campbell Smith: You do need to have clear accountabilities, who’s actually running the joint venture and to whom do they report ..... you must have a clear set of exit rules so that if anything should go wrong - and nobody can ever provide a hundred per cent for future uncertainties, if something goes wrong, the two partners know how they’re going to disentangle themselves from the joint venture. accountability - je třeba jasně stanovit, kdo je ve spojeném podniku za co zodpovědný, kdo ho řídí a komu se kdo zodpovídá. exit rules - není možné se stoprocentně zajistit proti všem nepředvídatelným problémům, a tak je potřeba jasný soubor pravidel pro případ, že joint venture přestane fungovat. Partneři ho mohou podle předem stanovených pravidel zrušit.

Carl Klemm: ... to try as much as we can to have the minimum of inventory of everything. And if we focus on that, that actually leads us to focus on all the other important things of management. If you operate lean production you can’t afford to have machines that break down all the time because if one machine breaks down in the process, the process stops. And so it focuses management minds on that I must have machines that are reliable, that keep running, therefore I must focus on their maintenance, I must focus on their quality. lean production - snažit se snížit veškeré zásoby (inventory) na minimum (suroviny rozpracované a nebo i hotové výrobky) - to je jeden ze zásadních předpokladů lean production...a to nám zároveň pomáhá soustředit pozornost na všechny ostatní aspekty řízení.

Gavin Kennedy: Well, mine is a functional definition and that is that negotiation is a process by which we obtain what we want from somebody who wants something from us. I think preparation is the key to successful negotiation, no matter what it is about. negotiation - vyjednávání je proces, kterým získáme, co chceme od někoho, kdo chce něco od nás preparation - aby vyjednávání bylo co nejúspěšnější, musí mu předcházet příprava
-
Gavin Kennedy: Understanding what they want and trying to be as specific as possible, that enables you to make a decision of whether you’re going to give up something you have that they want in order to get back from them something that they have that you want. If someone wants to obtain something with your money and you want to obtain the goods there’s a prospect of a negotiation. Whether it takes place depends on the temper, the temperament indeed, of the person you’re trying to deal with. specific - základem úspěšného jednání je, když se obě strany snaží vystupovat jasně a přesně. Pokud víme, co druhá strana požaduje, a pokud se sami snažíme to be as specific as possible, potom jsme na dobré cestě učinit rozhodnutí, zda jsme ochotni vzdát se toho, co po nás druhá strana chce, za účelem získat od nich na oplátku to, co chceme my. temper - momentální rozpoložení/ nálada temperament - povaha - pokud jedna strana potřebuje vaše peníze a vy potřebujete její zboží – existuje: a prospect of a negotiation, jestli se ale jednání uskuteční, záleží na náladě a také povaze osoby, s kterou jednáte.

Patric Lane: Well, I think it means two things really. One is the practice of discrimination against imports or indeed keeping them out altogether. The second is the doctrine that this is a good thing. protectionism - znamená v podstatě dvě věci.
