16:48: Discover how Ben landed his biggest retainer client yet and impressed them with THIS fantastic strategy for turning an Upwork assignment into a long-term project...
25:37: Do you get lonely as a freelancer? Or do you prefer having control over your schedule and who you work with? Hear our varied perspectives on the pros and cons of freelancing vs. full-time copywriting work...

hereâs Part 2 of the priceless interview I did with Sean â the first teacher-turned-copywriter AND financial copywriter I ever met:
[00:23] Why Sean is of two minds about niching down as a copywriter⊠and why having a niche could make you struggle MORE in the beginningâŠ
[02:40] What makes financial copy âa WEIRD freaking worldâ thatâs different from any other type of copy⊠and what you need to be prepared for if you want to break into this industryâŠ
[03:19] Why a few of us IGNORED Seanâs advice about niching down and went for it anyway
[03:39] Sean: âApproach it with a monomaniacal singularity of purpose. Just go after it. But most people are not like that⊠Most of those people donât make it.â
[04:00] His secrets for succeeding at a generalist copywriting career⊠getting really good at copy⊠and becoming known for your quality of work, NOT your niche (be warned, thereâs a lot of talk about candles here)âŠ
[06:29] Sean: âIf youâre not passionate about something, if thereâs not a particular niche or topic that youâre just like, âOh my God, I want to live, breathe, eat, shit, consume financial copy every single day of my life for the next 18 yearsâŠâ If youâre not that person, man, just let yourself become the candle guy.â
[08:00] His 3 steps to a BETTER, less stressful, faster-to-monetize copywriting pathâŠ
[08:06] Sean TURNS the tables on me and asks: âAs you were learning copy, were you trying to go the broad route or were you trying to hyper-specialize at first?â
[11:16] What you could miss out on if you ONLY hyper-focus on the most financially profitable nicheâŠ
[13:55] Seanâs journey from having a strong distaste of the financial industry DESPITE growing up around stockbrokers and Bloomberg terminals⊠to finding REAL meaning in financial copywritingâŠ
[16:23] How itâs possible to write ethical, evocative, emotionally compelling copy that STILL makes salesâŠ
[19:14] Why being a copywriter is like being in the MAFIA⊠and how it can get surprisingly lonelyâŠ
[21:13] Sean: âYou know, my job is to show up and teach people and get paid⊠Switching from that mindset to being like, âOh my God, my pay is directly connected to how much work I do and the quality of the work that I do.â Most people never experience that.â
[23:33] What he would say to himself if he could go BACK in time⊠and how he would approach his career and mindset differentlyâŠ
[25:43] Sean: âI was able to pay off all my student loans with a single check. I was able to buy a house with a single check.â
[29:11] Sean: âTeachers are horrifically mistreated and underpaid. But, unfortunately, you know, we donât get to live in the world we want. We have to live in the world that weâre in.â
[31:42] His advice for anyone transitioning from teaching to copywriting, why you DONâT have to quit your job, and how this could be a FAR more fulfilling career for you.
If you want to check out more of Seanâs work⊠Heâs the chief editor and analyst at diywealth.com (which I used to write for back in the day), which also has a very entertaining YouTube channel. As promised, meet Sean MacIntyre â the first teacher-turned-copywriter I ever met. Heâs one of my biggest inspirations in this crazy copy journey Iâm on, and Iâm so glad I finally got to interview him. This was such a fun conversation that we ended up chatting for more than an hour⊠So Iâve decided to break the episode into 2 parts.Hereâs part 1:[00:00] Why meeting Sean was the first time I realized thereâs a lot more I can do with my teaching and creative backgroundâŠ[01:25] How I first learned copywriting in 6 hours from a friend of Seanâs (Hi Alex Myers!)âŠ[02:00] Follow Seanâs journey from teaching English to college students⊠to becoming one of Agoraâs top financial copywriters⊠and running his MANY other businesses and YouTube projectsâŠ[07:00] Why the most painful aspects of teaching made it an âunsustainable lifestyleâ for him even though he loves teachingâŠ[10:26] Quote: âI donât want to do that. That sounds silly and dishonest and I have a horrible chronic disease called integrity.â â Sean[12:15] Check out the crazy route he carved from doing odd jobs and freelance writing⊠to becoming a proofreader, copywriter, and then publisher* at Agora â within 13 months!(*Which is kind of like the CEO in this universe)[15:06] Can you guess the copywriting/business/entrepreneurship pioneer who first mentored Sean as a copywriter?[17:45] Quote: âThe first copy that I ever sent to him in 2016 â he responded, and I quote, âThis copy sounds like copy. Fucking stop it. Rewrite this so that your copy doesnât sound like copy.ââ â Sean[18:52] The #1 misconception people have about copywriting mentors â and how to tell when you ACTUALLY need one during your copywriting journeyâŠ[25:00] The top mentee qualities that mentors and experienced people respond well to (plus a mini-rant from yours truly about online communication)[27:13] Sean reveals all the best secrets he shared in our copywriting community about getting good at copy⊠Plus: why you need to STOP browsing the internet with AdBlock onâŠ[31:44] At this point, we start nerding out about financial copy and what on EARTH a Big Idea really isâŠ[34:56] How often do you REALLY find a Big Idea? And how important are they, really? [38:00] The surprising thing Sean believes sells even BETTER than Big Idea copyâŠ[38:50] How the pioneer of Big Idea copy âco-optedâ the term from David Ogilvy⊠and why most people misuse the termâŠ[41:02] The BIGGEST skill Sean transferred from his teaching career that best prepared him to think deeply about copyâŠ[42:42] Quote: âReally good copywriting is⊠almost conversational in nature. Itâs very friendly, itâs very supportive, and learning how to speak in that register and how to write words and sentences that cut out the fluff and very succinctly deliver messages in that register⊠requires a lot of deep reading, a lot of thinking, a lot of practice.â â SeanâŠThis episode is to be continued.

(So, although Chris didnât transition from teaching, heâs got a really cool story that I believe anyone can learn from.)
We talked about:
â How Chris went from quitting his job without a plan, with only two months of savings⊠to clearing $20K in total gross revenue last month and working on a huge deal with an agency to build their email departmentâŠ
â How Ben went from being a Math teacher and assistant principal⊠to becoming an email list manager for DTC eCommerce brands, information clients, and ed-tech clients within a year!
â Why you shouldnât overlook (1) your use of time, (2) your budget, and (3) your short-term sacrifices to successfully make the transition into full-time copywriting
â How Chris and Ben took vastly different approaches to generating leads and clients for their freelancing businesses
â Chrisâs surprising âtrickâ for making great sales calls, and Benâs interesting perspective on Upwork as a âfront-end offerâ for his funnel
â The ONE thing all 3 of us have in common that accelerated our progress and transition (we all wish weâd discovered it sooner)
