  • In this first of its kind episode of the Empowered Presence podcast, Melanie leads a panel discussion on the role of education in establishing credibility and success for black women. Joined by Lakrisha Davis, Dr. Johnette Ruffner-Ceaser, and Babara (Mula) Oyier the conversation focuses on the value of degrees, the importance of mindset, and the impact of personal branding.

The panelists emphasize the need for a well-rounded approach to education and professional development, highlighting the significance of real-world experience, confidence, and self-advocacy.

    Panelists:

Lakrisha Davis, Business Strategist & Branding Expert

Dr. Johnette Ruffner-Ceaser, Founder & CEO, Liberated Expressions, LLC

Babara (Mula) Oyier, Award-Winning Social Impact Leader

This was the original post that sparked the conversation:

You can build credibility (without another degree)

    How?

Be the proof and tell the story.

    It’s about your lived experiences.

Not just some training you took.

🙌🏾Share the epiphany where you realized a new way to reach that goal.

🙌🏾Tell us about that 1 decision you made that changed your life for the better

🙌🏾Be open with the challenges you (or your clients) faced and how you overcame

🙌🏾Walk us through how you achieved something significant or made an impact on someone

Just because you earned a degree, took a class, or finished a course, does not automatically mean you can be trusted.

People are looking for more than letters after your name.

    They want YOU!

So don’t lead with credentials, lead with the value you bring and the trust you inspire through your actions.

What are your thoughts on credibility and degrees?

  • In today's episode, Melanie sits down with Sheila Amo, corporate HR turned style and presence coach. They dive into the complexities women of color face in the corporate world as Sheila shares her insights on the critical role of authenticity and personal branding. They tackle the delicate balance between staying true to yourself and adapting to professional environments.

    GUEST BIO:

Sheila spent her corporate career helping companies align their leadership, strategy, people and culture efforts. After twenty years working in a corporate environment, She decided to take a leap of faith and start an HR consulting practice. One reason she left "corporate" was that she regularly felt like a square peg in a round hole. She felt compelled to look, act, and be like “other” people to succeed and thrive. She was burned out and emotionally exhausted…sound familiar?

This experience is what fuels her passion for supporting women through style and presence coaching. She leverages lessons she learned as a corporate leader to teach women to connect to their inner IT GIRL, harness authenticity as a leadership tool, and align their presence with their inner brilliance so they can show up unapologetically, take up space, and express their expertise with visibility.

Imagine a world where every outfit you wear is a statement, not just of fashion, but of confidence and authenticity. That's the world Sheila invites clients to step into. Her style & presence coaching isn’t about fitting in; it's about embracing your individuality without hesitation, discovering and celebrating the true you.
