  • Too Stupid to Fail was released last Monday. After all of the years of hard work, it is finally out and available to the world! Not only that, but we are also so excited to announce that we have been the number one bestseller in four different hot new release categories ever since the launch.

Today, I want to take some time to reflect on many of the concepts taught in the book. I’m going to dive a bit deeper into some of the terms and ideas presented within Too Stupid to Fail, including the title itself. I hope you enjoy this solo episode and that it gives you a fresh mindset to take with you as you begin reading and applying the book.

In this episode, you will hear:

Why I used the word “stupid” in the title. How writing this book allowed me to engage with my life at a higher level. The dangers of operating with a victim mentality. How the quality of your lens determines the quality of your life. What it means to reframe. The four lenses you need to look through in order to grow.

  • Today we have a special guest joining us. Dr. Kaliym Isalm is an author and the founder of The TrainingPro Academy. He also runs a boutique educational consulting firm and works as an Assistant Professor of Practice at Southern Illinois University. Kaliym has written four books and, in this episode, we are talking about his most recent, The 12 Inch Rule of Leadership.

When Kaliym joined his fraternity, he had to memorize a 12 inch rule. This launched Kaliym into an in-depth research project which turned into a book.

Throughout our conversation, we talk more about this process of bringing The 12-Inch Rule of Leadership to fruition. We also get into Kaliym’s educational and career background and discuss some of his best leadership principles. Tune in to learn from the many varied experiences of Kaliym Isalm.

  • Today we are excited to have Frank Cupersmith with us. Frank is the CEO and former owner of RowCal, an association management company.

The really interesting thing about Frank is that he decided exactly how he wanted to exit his business. This is something all of us could learn from. Every entrepreneur is going to leave their business somehow. You may sell it, it may fail, or you may even die as the owner. Regardless, you’re going to leave somehow; you might as well do it by design.

This is exactly what Frank did. He was able to sell his company and now has more freedom in his life. We are thrilled to have him on the show to talk about this process and what it did for both his company and himself internally.

If you’re looking to learn from a strong exit strategy or simply want to make a difference the way that Frank has made a difference, tune in.

In this episode, you will hear:

Frank’s background in real estate. What his experience of going out on his own and launching a business was like. How he and his partner built momentum in their business. How they started acquiring people and building trust. The importance of investing in your employees. The difference between being an investor and being an owner of a business. How to release people that don’t align with your core values. What gave Frank the courage to sell his shares in his business. How that gave him greater work-life balance.

  • In this summer entrepreneur series, we have been talking with business owners all over the spectrum. Some run eight-figure businesses and some run smaller ones. Today, though, we wanted to introduce an entrepreneur who is within the genesis of his business.

A lot of early entrepreneurs don’t put the right systems in place right away. They don’t lay the necessary foundations for building a strong business. So I thought it would be really helpful for all of you emerging entrepreneurs who have experienced this struggle to hear from someone who is just a few steps ahead of you.

Brad Houston is the owner of Guy’s Sewer and Drain, a drain cleaning business in the Twin Cities/Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Today he is joining us to talk all about his journey to becoming an entrepreneur and the process he has gone through until now to grow his business.

In this episode, you will hear:

Brad’s career history. What drove him to entrepreneurship. Why advocacy is so important to him. His vision for Guy’s Sewer and Drain. How being successful as an entrepreneur allows you to make more impact. Brad’s highest values in life and business.

  • As you likely already know, in an entrepreneurial journey, no one starts out as an entrepreneur. Take my story for example. Straight out of college, I jumped into the nonprofit world. After years of struggles and pay cuts, I became extremely passionate about the budding entrepreneurs I was meeting and the big dreams they carried. It was at this point that I decided to step out on my own to help them and, in that, became an entrepreneur myself.

We’re smack dab in the middle of a series on entrepreneurship where we’ve been highlighting a lot of our clients. However, today we wanted to switch it up a bit by expanding on the story I told above. I’m going to share all about my entrepreneurial journey and that of our team here at Experience Leadership.

There are five lessons that I've picked up over the last decade of being an entrepreneur. During this amazing time of supporting entrepreneurs and leaders within our communities and around the world, I had to learn these five lessons over and over again. They not only apply to me though; they’ve been practiced by many of the leaders that I've had the privilege of working with over the years as well. Tune in to learn these five keys to being a highly successful entrepreneur.

In this episode, you will hear:

Entrepreneurs are driven by something beyond money. Why we dig deep beneath the surface with our clients. Entrepreneurs are humble enough to both teach and learn. Entrepreneurs focus on the things that matter. There are two types of entrepreneurs: technicians and visionaries. Entrepreneurs are aware of their limitations. The importance of connection and relationships in entrepreneurship.

  • Today’s episode is a special exclusive that we couldn’t wait to share. On July 9, we had our first in-person live event since COVID-19. During this event, a fantastic keynote was given by a very special guest, Greg Coleman.

Greg Coleman is from Jacksonville, Florida and is a graduate of Florida A&M University. He recently retired from a 25-year career as a C-level executive for a Fortune 500 International communications company that offers total communications solutions for public safety markets.

Greg also spent 12 years playing professional football and was even the first African American punter in the NFL. For the past 22 years, he has served as the sideline analyst for the Minnesota Vikings radio network. Finally, Greg is also a professional speaker who inspires leaders and organizations to shift the atmosphere, flip the field, and get a leg up on life.

Obviously, Greg has a lot of (and a very diverse range of) experience and expertise to bring to the table. Tune in to hear his entire keynote speech and learn all about the power of preparation and opportunity.

In this episode, you will hear:

How Greg became a punter. The power of our words. Why everyone needs a coach or mentor. What happens when preparation meets opportunity. The importance of consistency and dependability. How a business is like an orchestra.

  • Businesses exist to help others to bring value to others. But they're so busy doing it, that sometimes they can't sum up why they do what they do, or what difference they are making, or the problems they're truly solving for others. A huge factor in growing your business is being able to truly tell your story, but it’s also a common dilemma many businesses have.

A lot of people have websites and online presences that have been just their branding. Their products have been forced into these boxes. But they haven't really thought through what makes them different.

Today’s leadership spotlight is on Mark Zubert, founder of One Wheel Marketing. With over 20 years of marketing communications experience, Mark has a passion for partnering with small business owners to help them get their message out and highlight how they’re impacting lives.

In this episode, you will hear:

Mark’s entrepreneurial journey Their goal to help companies tell their own stories Some adjustments businesses needed to figure out during the pandemic The struggle to build a business culture as things are going remote How to keep your culture aligned and moving forward How they’re helping local businesses figure out where their local customers are

  • For the most part, when you're starting out as an entrepreneur, you're often a slave to your job. You’ve got to make sure everything goes right, especially when you have team members.

But we also have to remember that as entrepreneurs, we're not just workers. We're not just business leaders. We're human beings first. Therefore, we need to be able to find that balance and make a conscious decision to create some place for self and family.

Today, as we're celebrating the journey of the entrepreneur and the business leader, we're sharing the leadership of Lindsey Manhart from the Manhart Team at American Family Insurance.

Lindsey is intentional about building people up within her team and deploying them to their strongest area of genius, and taking the time to create the processes and the systems in place to support them. As a leader, Lindsey builds her business based on the foundation of trust.

In this episode, you will hear:

How she began her entrepreneurial journey The importance of truly trusting your team to let go of control and reclaim your life Why control doesn’t mean giving up your power Lindsey’s wake-up call that she made the conscious decision to create some space for her family

  • This summer, we’re focusing on entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. We want to celebrate amazing entrepreneurs who are out there crushing it in their fields. To do so, we’re going to be interviewing a lot of business leaders.

It can be really easy to view these kinds of leaders as superhumans. They do so much and they do it excellently. Because of this, we wanted to take some time to not only celebrate the victories of some of these “superhumans,” but to also talk about some of their challenges. Everyone encounters roadblocks along the way; it’s a part of our shared humanity.

To kick us off, I’m talking with Reuben Saltzman. Reuben is the CEO and primary callgiver at Structure Tech Home Inspections. Though they are located in Minnesota, their impact is felt nationwide. Reuben and his team have done some incredible things in the industry they’re in so tune in to hear from him today.

In this episode, you will hear:

Who Structure Tech is fighting for. The pitfalls of being a charismatic leader. How Reuben found ways to empower people who just wanted to be followers. Why education is Structure Tech’s top priority. How they’ve expanded their training program. The importance of taking care of your people as an entrepreneur.

  • Today we are concluding our series with Tim Wells. Over the past few episodes, he has enlightened us with his perspective. Not only has he brought his expertise based on his integrity model and his role as a sales leader but he has also helped us understand how all of that integrates into culture. Last week, we ended by talking about the things you need to do to prepare your business for investment, to exit, or to manage it with a high level of equity.

Today, we are continuing that conversation with the help of a very special second guest. Reed Robinson founded Groove Capital with the focus of finding great people to invest in great companies. Prior to Groove, Reed was involved with the startup community Beta MN. He is very passionate about seeing entrepreneurs from Minnesota in particular be successful.

In this episode, Reed, Tim, and I are talking about entrepreneurship and what it takes to get support from an investor. Reed emphasizes the importance of grit and never giving up and how to balance that with all of those little business details. Tune in to hear our incredibly rich conversation.

In this episode, you will hear:

The quality that sets emerging entrepreneurs up for succes. The power of starting a business based on a problem you see and want to solve. What grit looks like and why it’s so important for entrepreneurs. Why we need peer networks. How Reed sets boundaries with the entrepreneurs he works with. The values he looks for in the businesses he supports. Why entrepreneurs should set a big vision for their companies. How to balance passion and organization.
