In this episode, we have on Tanner Pruett discusses his coaching journey and how it has evolved over time. Tanner played baseball at Modesto Junior College in CA and Crown College in MN. He began his coaching career at Starters Sports Training and went on to coach at St Cloud State University, Tread Athletics and is currently a pitching instructor at Mash Baseball and a volunteer pitching coach at North Central University. In this episode we discuss the importance of allowing athletes to explore and find their own movement solutions, rather than focusing on perfect mechanics. Tanner also discusses how his coaching approach aligns with ecological dynamics and the Constraint Led Approach. He highlights the value of incorporating real game-like situations, such as facing live batters, into training sessions. We discuss how coaches can use biomechanics to guide an athletes search process to find more functional movement solutions. The conversation also explores the balance between exploration and consistency in training, as well as the role of constraints in pitching practice.Find Tanner on Social MediaTwitter: @TJPruett2310Instagram: @TJP_trainingIntro music by: Muellzyhttps://soundcloud.com/muellzymusicSupport Us & Learn More About Ecological Dynamics (links below)Donate to Finding the Edge:buymeacoffee.com/ftepodEcological Dynamics ResourcesResources from Emergence a movement skill education company dedicated to helping coaches learn how to apply an ecological approach to understanding and developing movement skill.Get 7% off most courses by using code: Edge7Educational Products: https://emergentmvmt.com/shop-2/Social MediaTwitter: @EmergentmvmtInstagram: @EmergentmvmtPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/EmergentmvmtFollow Us!Join our Discord: bit.ly/3a07z1BFind us on Twitter:@gboyum01@RobertFrey40@CoachgbakerSubscribe on Youtube: bit.ly/34dZ7

In this episode, we share our thoughts on the 2023 Sport Movement Skill Conference hosted by Emergence. In our conversation, we explore the importance of discovering the ecosystem of Art and Science, where it lives and breaths within an Ecological Approach. We discuss the need for athletes to be adaptable and resourceful in dynamic sporting contexts. The conversation highlights the role coaches play in creating practice environments that foster exploration and problem-solving. We discuss the value of facilitating space for athletes to explore in order to find their authentic functional fit within the context of their sport.Talks we highly recommend you checkout the impetus for this episode the 2023 Sport Movement Skill Conference which can be purchased here with the 7% off code EDGE7 https://emergentmvmt.com/product/sport-movement-skill-conference-2023/Who do we think you should listen to from SMSC23?ALL OF THEM!!But some of our favorites:Jim HaverstromStuart McMillanDr. Alex LascuBen FranksDr. Keith DavidsAustin JochumSupport Us & Learn More About Ecological Dynamics (links below)Donate to Finding the Edge:buymeacoffee.com/ftepod

In this episode, we discuss the importance of being able to integrate our exploration back into getting better on the field. One of the major mistakes that many people make who go all in on exploring to become more athletic often coaches end up programming activities to explore just for the sake of exploration. We don't want them to get good at doing random novel tasks but figure out how to perform more consistently and effectively come game time. Therefore it's imperative that coaches discover how to harness the power of exploration to facilitate skill development. At the end of the day, our goal is to help them to find a more functional fit, meaning more consistent and effective ways of solving any emerging problem they may face come game time. Our goal is to keep the main thing the main thing. Our conversation was facilitated by another Vervaeke video this time we use a small clip from Lex Fridman's Podcast (EP 317). Goodhart's law is an important concept for coaches and analysts to keep in mind to maintain an edge when technology, data, and analytics are so pervasive in today's game. Simply following the current trends in the tech and data space may lead coaches, players, and organizations to misuse their analytics departments resulting in players underperforming on the field given the underlying data analysis. In this episode, we discuss the limitations we currently see with chasing metrics and how using an ecological approach can allow you to better harness analytics for your player development and on-field performance.

This week we have Chad Longworth back on the podcast. Chad is a self-professed curiosity junkie, it is what defines him and his journey. As a coach, he believes that his playing career is completely irrelevant to helping players with their journey, other than his ability to relate as he's been there and knows how it feels. Chad is a facility owner and player development coach in Virginia.
In this episode, we discuss some of the principles which we think underpin hitting, how different constraints affect our vision and subsequent movement behavior, ecological dynamics, bunting, and more.Previous FTE episode featuring Chad: https://spoti.fi/3sBHxxE

In this episode, we brought Jackie Wu on to learn more about her and her course TheraPlay which takes a games-based approach to injury rehabilitation. In addition to incorporating play to recover from injury, play is a great way to stay healthy and make you more resilient to injury. If you would like to learn more about her course please email Jackie at [email protected] or email us at [email protected]. We had a great discussion exploring the various educational resources we each have taken and see as well as how her approach to movement and TheraPlay could fit within an Ecological Approach.
Jackie is a Pain Resolution, Movement Specialist, and Message Therapist. Jackie is like the Mary Poppins of the movement therapy world. She has a very diverse background in fitness, health, and wellness as well as a wealth of personal experience. Jackie educates coaches and clients about body mechanics, neurology, physical dysfunctions, and the effects of each on how the human body operates.
Again if you are interested in taking Jackie's course TheraPlay please email Jackie at [email protected] or email us at [email protected].

In this episode, we have another emergent discussion that we record back in June after our spring seasons had ended. The discussion started with a reflection on our previous episode with Ted Monnich on how flow states can fit within an Ecological Approach to skilled behavior. We also explored the ecological concept of affordances and the role of thoughts and cognition play within the perception of affordances. We wrap up our conversation discussing the power of narrative to facilitate buy-in when presenting new information, especially data.
