    The Hawks Insiders caught up with Head of Football, Rob McCartney for what is quickly becoming our favourite podcast mini-series.

    Speaking to Danny Prins and Darren Levin, McCartney provided his trademark insight and reflections, giving Hawks fans a glimpse into the inner workings of the Football Department at Hawthorn. McCartney spoke about:

    * The challenges the club faced at the start of the season and how they were overcome, without losing focus on the overall goal;

    * The character and culture that the group has developed, carefully cultivated by coach, Sam Mitchell;

    * Process, process, process and how the ‘F’ word is still out of bounds;

    * Rule 529 and how the Hawks are tracking against their pre-season expectations;

    * Individual player insights including a look at Massimo D’Ambrosio, Mabior Chol, Jack Ginnivan, Nick Watson, Jack Gunston, Josh Ward, an a number of other players;

    * What the Hawks are looking to achieve, both on and off the field, for the remainder of 2024;

    * and so much more…

    Listen as Darren Levin, Andrew Weiss and Daniel Prins recapped Hawthorn’s seventh win for the season, heading into the bye with all the momentum in the world. If the Hawks win post bye against the Eagles, like we all expect they should, we might be able to discuss the possibility of playing finals football.

    Key talking points:

    * The occasion, and what it was like when Dusty kicked the opener;

    * Josh Weddle being born for the big stage;

    * The rebirth of Jack Scrimshaw, an All-Australian defender?

    * James Sicily’s performance and his other-worldly kicking;

    * Sam Frost' giving Tom Lynch a bath;

    * The Wizard;

    * Mabior Chol - The Experience;

    * The development and growth of the Hawks next generation;

    * Pressure being put on the AFL players from those at Box Hill;

    * Heading into the bye on a high;

    * What to do with Mitch Lewis;

    It’s always good to get together with the Hawks Insiders community, and when the Hawks are on the kind of run they’re on at the moment, it only makes it even more enjoyable. This week’s Safe Space was no exception.

    The Insiders panel, this week consisting of Danny Prins, Darren Levin, Brad Klibansky, Simon Morawetz and Mick Cowan, jumped on the X Safe Space to discuss a range of topics including:

    * The good, the bad and everything in between relating to the win over the Giants;

    * Our popular ‘Questions without notice’ segment was back, looking at a few different subjects;

    * Box Hill’s demolition of the Giants Reserves, Jasper Scaife’s debut, Nick Watson’s impressive last fortnight;

    * Breaking down Simon Morawetz’s piece which asks the question are the Hawks good? (read that here);

    Another week, another close victory. This time the Hawks slaying down the top four-chasing Giants by a solitary kick at our home away from home at UTAS in Launceston.

    Listen as Ashley Browne and Darren Levin recapped Hawthorn’s sixth win from their last eight encounters. After starting the season with five consecutive losses, the Hawks now sit just two games out of the eight with Richmond and the bye coming up. (Although Ash isn’t prepared to look at the ladder until the win-loss ledger is squared.)

    Key talking points:

    * Will Day’s leadership and impact since coming back into the side.

    * The makeshift ruck combo of Conor Nash and Josh Weddle (😮) taking it up to big Kieren Briggs.

    * The eye-catching and “fun” performance of Mabior Chol.

    * CJ’s electric second half.

    * Jarman Impey’s rich vein of form.

    * Swiss Army Weddle.

    * The commentary 😬

    * Jack Gunston’s career renaissance and “off the charts” footy IQ.

    * Luke Breust’s enormous impact off the bench.

    * Calsher Dear’s bright future, despite the fourth quarter brainfade.

    * Xavier O'Halloran taking out the Ben Ronke award.

    * Looking ahead to Richmond and #Dusty300.

    * Our depleted ruck stocks with both Meek and Reeves in doubt for next week.

    The vibes were high as Darren Levin, Andrew Weiss and ‘Happy’ Brad Klibansky recapped another glorious day at the footy.

    ✅ Our first win at the MCG in 2024.

    ✅ 250 games for Jack Gunston.

    ✅ 2014 Premiership team reunion.

    ✅ A comfortable 27 point win.

    There wasn’t much not to love about the clinical (and stylish) way the Hawks dispatched the Crows, but there were certainly some talking points, namely the competition for places heating up off the back of a big VFL win and the “rascal pack” identity the young Hawks are building. The HI team also touched on:

    🤔 How CJ is tracking.

    🤔 How do Nick Watson and Chad Wingard get back into this side?

    🤔 Does Cam Mackenzie make way for Josh Ward?

    🤔 The elite recruitment of Massimo D'Ambrosio.

    🤔 The impact Jack Ginnivan has made on the forward line and the team as a whole.

    🤔 Big Noodle Reeves’ serviceable return to the ruck.

    🤔 Whether the “F word” is realistic in 2024.

    🤔 Do our mids need to kick more goals?

    * Clarkson. North. Legacy;

    * Can we beat the Crows and celebrate Jack Gunston’s 250th in style;

    * And much much more…

    They talk about character being on display when your backs are against the wall. Well, after last week’s final quarter against Port Adelaide, the Hawks collective back was against the wall today., and they showed exactly what they are made of.

    A return to the hosts chair for Ash Browne brought about a shuffling of the pack, and he was joined by Darren Levin and Danny Prins to chat all things wins against the Lions:

    * Maturity of performance coming out of the loss to Port;

    * Pushing back against a couple of strong Brisbane challenges;

    * A forward line functioning without Mitch Lewis;

    * Will Day, Jai Newcombe and James Worpel;

    * The return of James Sicily and Jack Scrimshaw and how much of a difference they make;

    * Development of our younger brigade including Mass D’Ambrosio, Jack Ginnivan, Cam Mackenzie and Connor Macdonald;

    * Where to from here for these young, up and coming Hawks?

    * And a lot more…

    A massive weekend and emotions are only just starting to subside. The Safe Space was was just the tonic to get them all out and prepare for the Lions next weekend.

    * The good, the bad and the painful from the heartbreaking loss on Sunday;

    * Will Day is back baby;

    * Sam Frost holding the backline together in the absence of Sicily and Scrimshaw;

    * What are our thoughts on Karl Amon, the defender?

    * A Mid-Season Draft primer including some names to look out for;

    * Where to now for the Hawthorn racism peace talks?

    * Looking ahead to the Lions and our ability to bounce back from a tough loss;

    This should have been the podcast where the lid well and truly came off. Unfortunately the Hawks slowed to a stop in the last quarter and the Power surged to victory, breaking Hawk hearts in the process.

    If you can bear it, Danny Prins and Darren Levin look back dejectedly but with hope at the 1 point loss to Port Adelaide and touch on:

    * The Hawks becoming first quarter specialists;

    * A first half full of so much promise but a last quarter to forget;

    * Who’s or what is actually to blame and why are some Hawks fans coming for Sam Mitchell?;

    * The form of Will Day and Lloyd Meek;

    * Performances of some young Hawks including Calsher Dear, Massimo D’Ambrosio, Connor Macdonald, and Cam Mackenzie;

    * How this game can be looked at as a disgraceful loss or as a step in the right direction';

    That’s two wins from our last three games… and suddenly things are nowhere near as bad as they seemed a few weeks back.

    And what a fun day it was watching some of our young kids grow before our eyes, with some of our elder statesmen really stepping up.

    So there was no better place to record our review pod than with a nice cold bevvy at the bar inside Marvel Stadium. Listen to Danny Prins and Andrew Weiss as they take you through the highs and lows from the win against the dogs including:

    * Panic in the stands three minutes in;

    * The incredible pressure applied in the contest all day;

    * Our rolling zone and solid defensive structure;

    * Lloyd, Calsher, Jarman and Dylan;

    * The captain standing up after a horrific looking injury earlier;

    * And so much more - most of it discussed while smiling.

    A tough day at the office for Sam Mitchell’s men on Sunday afternoon. The effort was there from the outset, but the execution was missing for large parts. Danny Prins was joined by Andrew Weiss and Darren Levin to discuss the major talking points from the game:

    * A first quarter full of intent but not a lot else;

    * The Hawks inability to absorb pressure and execute skills;

    * Jack Scrimshaw and Sam Mitchell;

    * Experienced players and their leadership, or lack thereof;

    * Another positive Cam Mackenzie experience;

    * The importance of patience and perspective when assessing the list for the now and for the long term;

    * The disfunction of Hawthorn’s forward line;

    * Buddy’s return;

    * Plenty more…

    “I don’t think I share Brad’s optimism on that” is a line that no follower of the Hawks Insiders would have ever thought they would hear come from Darren Levin’s mouth but here we are. If nothing else, this podcast is worth listening to in order to find out the why behind that statement.

    Danny, Darren and Brad jumped on to record their immediate thoughts post Hawthorn’s first win of the season against a very ordinary North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

    The Insiders discussed the match at length, with the overall tone of positivity a nice change from the previous few weeks.

    * A phenomenal second quarter full of dash and dare;

    * Jack Ginnivan and his impact on Hawthorn’s forward line;

    * The performance of an under fire Connor Macdonald, a returning Harry Morrison and the under pressure Jai Newcombe and Conor Nash;

    * A bit of ‘winding back the clock’ from Jack Gunston and how his presence as much as his performance helped Mabior Chol;

    * The excitement and class on display from Cam Mackenzie;

    * Sam Frost, Jack Scrimshaw and Josh Weddle. Reliable and uncompromising defending;

    * Plenty more…

    No Hawk has ever booted more goals in a single game than Jason Dunstall's incredible 17-goal haul against Richmond in Round 7, 1992.

    As a tribute to this week’s announcement of Dunstall’s elevation as an AFL Legend, we take you back to when we he joined us on the Golden Years to recount this historic performance.

    Many would argue such a feat will never be repeated in modern football, so why not reminisce until your heart's content.

    Legend.

    Where do we start. Saturday nights debacle on the Gold Coast is one of those nights you wish you could forget, but one that sticks with you like a bad dream.

    Danny Prins was joined by Nat Martin to dive into the match, at times two footed, and try to get an understanding of where the Hawks are at coming out of such a poor performance.

    The discussion was free-flowing and centred around:

    * How the Hawks managed to find themselves both still in the game, and completely outplayed all the way to half time;

    * The midfield and their inability to stem the flow of Suns players pumping the ball into Hawthorn’s defensive 50;

    * The unfair ask on some of the members of our defensive group, and how they’re standing up to the task as best as can be expected;

    * Finn being a positive;

    * Hawthorn’s forward line and the limited chances they had, but how the forward pressure was non-existent;

    * The changes that need to be made before the must-win game against North Melbourne on Sunday ;

    * Where the Hawks go from here;

    * and plenty more…
