In addition, Nate offers some tips you should keep in mind when having lab tests, one of which could be life saving!

Now a little bit more about Nate: Nathan Keele is a healthcare innovator and serial entrepreneur aiming to change healthcare across America. • Hi everyone.

Have you or someone you care about had a stroke? Or maybe you’re at risk of a stroke because of your health... or your family history? Regardless, do you know what you can do to help prevent a stroke.. or minimize the damage caused by one?

My guest expert, Dr. Pam Duncan, has spent 50 years focusing on strokes. If you want to learn what she has to say about strokes-- and some of the advances we’ve seen and may yet see in preventing, diagnosing, or treating strokes-- you'll surely enjoy this episode of Health Care on the Horizon.

Among other things, Pam speaks about (1) the two most common types of strokes, (2) how many people in the United States alone suffer a stroke each year, (3) what ethnic or racial groups are more prone to strokes, (4) the most significant risk factor for getting a stroke, (5) recent and potential future medical advances which are or will help to prevent strokes or assist those who are recovering from one, and (6) what she plans to do in retirement. SPOILER ALERT: It's all about helping people who have strokes, and those who assist them in doing so.

You'll also get some great tips from Dr. Duncan on what YOU or your loved ones need to do to minimize the chance of having a stroke... or maximize your chance of recovering from one in the best way possible.

Now a little bit more about Pam: Pam Duncan is a professor of neurology at the Wake Forest Baptist Health. She holds a Ph.D. in epidemiology. Dr. Duncan is a clinician, researcher, and advocate for transforming stroke care at the policy, health system, and patient levels.

She has secured and successfully implemented millions of dollars of funded studies from NINDS, NIA, PCORI, AHA and industry-at-large to measure post-stroke recovery, develop interventions, and evaluate those interventions for stroke recovery and secondary prevention to provide evidence guidelines and policy papers to drive change.  Pam is now transitioning her career from an academic one involving research studies. Her next career, via her new company, Care Directions, will look to scale innovative programs and products, and consult with agencies and health systems, to transform care within their organizations.

Dr. Duncan has received numerous awards, but her most cherished one is the AHA/ASA David Sherman Award she earned in 2020.  The David Sherman award recognizes lifelong contribution to advancing stroke care, research and mentoring the next generation of clinical researchers. Dr. Duncan is the only woman and the first non-physician to receive this award.

  • Hi everybody.

Did you know that an estimated 1 in 36 people in the U.S. has autism?  Those numbers are likely to be similar in other parts of the world. The good news is that there are plenty of services available to help those who have autism... and those who support them. Even better, there are initiatives and medical research underway which may further improve the quality of life for those who have autism.

My guest expert, Chris Banks, discusses these things and much more on this episode of Health Care on the Horizon.

Among other things, Chris speaks about (1) what are some common things to look for with a potentially autistic child, (2) when testing should first begin to test for autism, (3) who should make an autism diagnosis, and (4) why about 4 times as many boys as girls are diagnosed with autism. Spoiler alert: You may be surprised to hear Chris' answer.

You'll also learn about some of the life-enhancing initiatives the Autism Society is moving forward, where to get help if you are caring for someone who has autism, and some exciting medical research on the autism front. Finally, Chris gives some important tips for those with autism-- and those who assist them.

Now a little more about Chris. Christopher Banks is the President and CEO of the Autism Society of America. https://autismsociety.org/

Chris has a comprehensive background of serving the nonprofit community.  He has worked in a wide variety of organizations including medical centers, community hospitals, assisted living communities, secondary and higher education institutions, national parks, human service organizations, and religious communities.  He has a successful record of significantly increasing fundraising support, measurably improving revenue strategies, and dramatically transforming culture, diversity, and inclusion.

Chris has been providing executive direction and leadership for the Autism Society since the beginning of 2020.  At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, he pivoted the national organization to be a resource, service, and support enterprise for the affiliates, individuals, and families.

Chris is establishing long-lasting relationships with external partners, philanthropic organizations, and elected officials to further policy efforts and fundraising activities of the Society.

Chris has an MBA in Finance from Manhattan College, and his MS (Human Resources Administration) and BA degrees (Human Resources and Philosophy) are from The University of Scranton.

Did you know that an estimated 50 million people around the world have epilepsy? Did you know that there are some very exciting advances being made, not only to help diagnose and treat epilepsy, but potentially to prevent it? I hope you enjoy learning what my guest expert, Laura Lubbers of Cure Epilepsy has to say about that-- and much more-- on this episode of Health Care on the Horizon.

Among other things, Laura speaks about (1) when epilepsy was first reported, and what the common symptoms and effects of this condition are, (2) where in the world you're more likely to find people with epilepsy and why, and (3) new approaches now being used to diagnose the different kinds of epilepsy.

On a very positive note, you'll learn about some of the exciting advances taking place that are designed to improve the quality of life for those who have epilepsy. Beyond that, there's also other hopeful news: Listen as Laura discusses efforts being taken to potentially prevent young children (and maybe others) from experiencing epileptic seizures!

Now a little more about Laura: Dr. Laura Lubbers brings more than 25 years of research experience to her position of Chief Scientific Officer at CURE Epilepsy. In her role, she is responsible for developing the organization’s research strategy, and overseeing and implementing all research programs which seek to cure epilepsy, not just treat the symptoms. • Hi everybody!

Do or you someone you know have cerebral palsy (CP)? It’s a lifelong disabling condition that usually begins at birth and affects millions of people all over the world. The good news is that, according to my guest expert, progress is being made toward improving the lives of those who have CP— and possibly even preventing or limiting the impact of CP in the future. That guest expert is Michael Pearlmutter, Executive Director of Cerebral Palsy Research Alliance Foundation (CPARF).

On this episode, Michael will discuss such things as (1) how many people around the world have CP, (2) how this condition differs in various parts of the world, (3) what causes CP, and (4) how does CP present itself. Most importantly, you'll hear about some of the wonderful advancements that are being made to help prevent CP, mitigate its impact, or help those with CP lead a better quality of life. You'll also get a great tip from Michael on how those who have CP-- and their loved ones or caregivers-- can better manage this condition.

Now a little more about Michael. Michael Pearlmutter is a proven nonprofit leader, relationship builder, and perspective changer. Harnessing scientific research to change lives energizes him, and he is excited to bring his experience, ingenuity, and drive to Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation, where he can make a difference for the 18 million people with CP worldwide.

Prior to joining CPARF, Michael served as the Executive Director of the Partnership for Clean Competition Research Collaborative. In that role, he developed, directed, and drove the strategy for the largest anti-doping research organization in the world. He established a prosperous fundraising model that included global partnerships, cultivated relationships with scientists, helped build a Scientific Advisory Board with more than 300 years of collective experience, and revolutionized the organization’s grant administration process — all while shaping the organization into a thought leader in its space and strengthening relationships with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, the US Anti-Doping Agency, Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Hockey League, the PGA TOUR, and others.

Michael also previously served as the Executive Director of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership, a multi-partisan nonprofit educational organization. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in quantitative economics from the United States Naval Academy.

Michael served in the US Navy as a submarine officer before earning his Masters in Business Administration from Babson College. • Hi everyone.

As we learned in the first part of this two-part series, metabolic dysfunction, sometimes referred to as metabolic syndrome, is at the root of such things as fatty liver disease, obesity, kidney malfunction, diabetes, renal failure, cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and brain fog… and so many other conditions that adversely affect our health and well-being.

In Part 2, I'll continue my conversation with our guest expert, Dr. Robert Lustig, on the subject of metabolic syndrome.

On this episode, Dr. Lustig will cover such things as (1) how do we determine how "processed" a food is, especially if we are in the supermarket, (2) what are the two kinds of carbs, and which one is better for you, (3) why might COVID mortality be higher in the more developed countries of the world, and (4) what are some things Dr. Lustig and his colleagues are working on to address the problems linked to processed foods, low fiber intake, and high sugar consumption.

Finally, Dr. Lustig will speak about what changes he sees coming down the pike in tackling the metabolic syndrome crisis. And, hey, that's where the really encouraging news comes in!

What if I told you that something called metabolic dysfunction is at the root of such things as fatty liver disease, obesity, kidney malfunction, diabetes, renal failure, cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and brain fog… and so many other conditions that adversely affect our health and well-being? And, of greater significance,  what if you knew what to do to prevent or reverse metabolic dysfunction?

Well, that’s what we’re going to be speaking about on the next two episodes of Health Care on the Horizon with our guest expert, Dr. Robert Lustig.

On this first episode with Dr. Lustig, he’ll share his knowledge and expertise about such things as: (1) what is metabolic syndrome and what causes it, (2) how many people are affected by metabolic syndrome, and what impact it has on our bodies, (3) how do you know if YOU have metabolic syndrome, and (4) what role the food we eat has on metabolic syndrome—spoiler alert—it’s HUGE.. We’ll also learn about some projects Dr. Lustig is involved with that are designed to help us improve our metabolic health.

  • Hi everyone.

What if you, your child, your parent, or someone else you loved had a disease that could be prevented or possibly even cured by understanding your or their personal genetic makeup? I’m talking about anything from a rare disorder, to epilepsy, to cancer. Wow! Like how wonderful would that be?

Well, the good news is that’s not farfetched anymore. In fact, progress like this is being made almost every day as researchers, scientists, and clinicians study the makeup of our bodies, the human genome.  And one of those genome scientists is Dr. Charles Steward, and he’s my guest expert on this episode, episode #8, of Health Care on the Horizon.

On this episode, Dr. Steward will share his knowledge and experience about such things as: (1) when did the effort to map the human genome begin-- and where are we now with that,  (2) why the effort to understand the human genome and benefit from that is a global exercise, (3) what are some specific diseases which genomic research is having a positive impact on, and 4) what impact our understanding of the human genome could potentially have on us—individually-- over the next decade and beyond.

Dr. Charles Steward is an internationally renowned patient advocate and genome scientist, who has spent nearly 29 years working with the human genome and rare diseases. He spent 22 years at the Wellcome Sanger Insititute, which is where he did his PhD and has co-authored numerous publications. Charles has taught extensively about the human genome at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, and internationally with the Wellcome Trust. He’s also worked with Congenica, and currently is the Head of Patient and Participant Engagement at Genomics England.

Dr. Steward is also the father of two children with severe neurological disorders who have been through numerous UK-based genomic studies, including Genomics England's 100000 Genomes Project. He’s also a patron and trustee for Hope for Epilepsy London.

  • Hi everyone!

If you had a rare disease, would you be fighting hard to find a way to make life better for others who also had it?  Would you be working to find a cure for it? Well, that’s what my guest expert, Tara Zier, founder and president of The Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation (SPSRF) is doing.

Have you ever heard of Stiff Person Syndrome?  Well, if you haven’t, you’re not alone. In fact, until very recently, I knew nothing about it myself. It’s a very rare disease that is extremely difficult to diagnose and can be extraordinarily debilitating, both physically and psychologically.

In this episode of Health Care on the Horizon, you’ll learn about such things as (1) who gets Stiff Person Syndrome, (2) how it presents itself, (3) why it IS so difficult to diagnose and treat, and (4) where to get help if you or someone you care about either has-- or wonders if they may have-- Stiff Person Syndrome. Finally, and perhaps most significantly, you’ll learn about the determined effort to get to the bottom of this disease, and make it much easier to diagnose and treat in the future.

That effort is being capably and persistently led by our guest expert today, Tara Zier. Dr. Tara Zier is the founder and president of The Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation, which she established in 2019 to raise awareness and funds for better treatments and a cure. In 2017, Tara was forced to leave a twenty-year career in dentistry and stop her practice of karate (she’s a 3rd degree black belt, by the way), due to Stiff Person Syndrome.

In 2021, The SPSRF was selected to receive a three-year “Rare As One” grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. And in 2022, Tara established a Medical Advisory Board which includes neurologists from Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University School, and the University of Athens Medical School.

  • Hi everyone. Acne! Ever have it? Know someone who has it now? Well, then you better stay tuned!

For me, just the mention of that 4-letter word brings back bad memories for me, especially during my college years. But, as the song goes, “That was yesterday. And yesterday’s gone.” Today the news about treating acne is much more positive!

And the future could be even brighter. That’s pretty important when you consider the staggeringly high percentage of people who will deal with acne at some point in their life. See if you can guess that right now!

In this episode of Health Care on the Horizon, you’ll learn about such things as (1) who gets acne, (2) why it’s affecting more people in their 30’s, especially women, and what we’ve learned about what causes acne.

And if you're a young adult or have teenagers within your family, relax: It’s not pizza or chocolate... which is what they used to lead me to believe. You’ll also learn about a promising new, research-based approach to treating acne that’s already looking to be much more effective and long-term that what’s been used before.

To help us with this, we’ve brought on an expert on acne. He’s Yug Varma.

Dr. Varma’s mission is to change the way we treat chronic bacterial diseases. He’s working tirelessly to achieve this goal with a microbiome-based technology platform. • Hi everyone. Today, we're going to learn about a genetic disorder referred to as SYNGAP1. Most of us have probably never heard of SYNGAP1. That's largely because it's only recently been identified.

Research is showing it is a significant factor in autism, epilepsy and possibly other disorders too, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease.

In this episode, we'll learn when the problems with the SYNGAP1 gene were discovered, who this affects, where the SYNGAP condition presents itself.

We'll also What is being done right now to learn about this genetic disorder and what may lie ahead in terms of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of SYNGAP1 on genetic abnormalities.

To help us understand all this, we've brought on probably the best person out there to discuss this topic: Monica Weldon. When I tell you a little bit more about Monica, I think you'll understand why.

Monica Weldon is the founder, President and CEO of the SYNGAP 1 Foundation. Monica's twin son, Beckett, was the first to be diagnosed at Texas Children's Genetics Clinic with the gene mutation in gap on... Over the past several years, Monica's focus has been building the programs and mission of the SYNGAP 1 Foundation. As you'll soon hear, Monica is doing that!

You'll find more about Monica if you go to our website, www.jeff-ostroff.com
