Music has been a part of Alexandra's life ever since she started playing violin as a four-year-old in Toronto. As a teenager she was already an old soul; falling for the power of greats like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald. You can sense these influences in the heart wrenching arc of her voice as it haunts the spaces between analog soundscapes. In live performances her brother joins her onstage playing the french horn. Alexandra's cinematic, invitational narrative melodies creep under your skin- whispering lyrics that are endlessly relatable.
Alexandra's work is a reflective act; she wrote the songs on Luna after the sudden death of her mother. Her musical narratives explore caves of loss and grief with rare openness. But Alexandra's music is full of lightness too- with tracks like Every Winter allowing room for us to fall in love and somehow laugh at life. When not writing she finds joy in the little things- walking in High Park, taking baths, reading mystery novels and eating candy. In this way, she is well versed in the joys and trials of life. Her music brings something rare and powerful to the table: wisdom.

Holden lets us behind the scenes about the creation of the album, saying "Stay Golden was written in my freshman and sophomore year of college as I was trying to figure out how to act like an adult while also trying to tour in my band 2-3 times a year as well as continue to run the record label I had started when I was 15. This is an album about struggling to identify with my own identity that I’d created for myself and most notably struggling to identify with the music scene. It’s about trying to understand what it means to “Stay Golden” as a sort of ideal way of living to me and to the people around me."

6KITTY is a 3-piece, female-fronted indie rock band from Chicago. The longtime friends formed as a band in 2018 and share a commitment to creativity and a love of music ranging from Courtney Barnett to the Beths to hometown heroes, Local H. Their dynamic sound has been compared to Vanishing Kids, UV-TV, and the Pixies. They fuse blended vocal harmonies, melodic forward bass lines, and hard-hitting drums. They love playing live shows, connecting with audiences, and having fun onstage.
6kitty released their first album, Tux, on 11/11/22 which was included in Fast ‘n’ Bulbous’ Top 100 Albums of 2022 and ranked #6 in the Art Pop and Dream Pop category. They’ve been featured multiple times on WNUR’s Power Pop Shoppe and on Radio DePaul’s Rare Candy.

You can keep your dreams under wraps or unleash them into the world. For the musicians who comprise Dream Phases, holding back their musical visions has not been an option. Conceived in the private recesses of their L.A. home base, the band has expanded outwards by drawing upon the rich sonic heritage of West Coast pop/rock and skillfully reimagining it for the 21st Century. But beyond its finely wrought sound and texture, there’s an intensely personal quality to the work they create together. The dreams they explore transcend mere craft and calculation.
Emerging from the City of Angels’ neo-psychedelic rock scene in 2017, Dream Phases reflects California’s natural splendor and adventuresome inner spirit in its music. The earthy-yet-exalted sounds of the Byrds, the Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – as well as latter-day artists like the Rain Parade, Elliott Smith and Autolux – figure into the band’s family tree. While this lineage is worth noting, what comes through in the band’s latest work is an individual approach that translates the experiences of its members into something undeniably compelling. Dream Phases’ initial flowering was as a solo project by Brandon. After gaining a wealth of experience working with such notable L.A.-area combos as Blank Tapes, the Relationship, Levitation Room and Nacosta, he decided to fully develop the songwriting side of his talents on his own. SMITH & THELL—Maria Smith [vocals, guitar] and Victor Thell [vocals, guitar, production]—have generated billions of streams, packed venues, and enraptured fans worldwide. Smith & Thell’s story began as teens in Sweden. Maria and Victor forged a friendship, fueling their creativity and collaboration. They enchanted audiences with the likes of Soulprints [2017], Pixie’s Parasol [2021], and Acoustic In Isby [2021]. Meanwhile, “Forgive Me Friend” [feat. Swedish Jam Factory], “Hotel Walls,” and “Year of the Young” each garnered millions of streams. Along the way, they shared stages with Young The Giant, Fitz And The Tantrums, and more. On this weeks show I welcome Joseph Grillo (also known as Sid Jagger) of HER HEAD'S ON FIRE. Joe may be best know for his first band the fantastical post-hardcore outfit GARRISON. Since then Joe has kept busy, forming and playing in number of bands along the way, such as JUDAS KNIFE, I HATE OUR FREEDOM, and GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP to name a few. In Joe's newest band he is joined Jeff Dean (The Bomb, guitar), Rodrigo Palma (Saves The Day, bass), and Jeff Gensterblum (Small Brown Bike and Able Baker Fox, drums) — it’s easy to see why Grillo is stoked on creating music again. This is a lineup loaded with deep experience in some of the most beloved emo and post–hardcore bands of the past three decades. “Supergroup” feels like a decidedly un–punk term, but it’s a descriptor that fits the band’s collective resume. Join Joe and as we discuss his wild journey through life and music.

Founded in Chula Vista, indie/alt Los Saints features all first-generation Mexican-Americans, including frontman Angel Mariscal, guitarist Gianluca Exposito, and drummer Emiliano Garcia. Los Saints is a fairly new operation. They released an EP, Welcome To Confusion, in 2022, and have now moved on to the long form. Their music is a melancholy sort of alt pop rock that tends to undulate.

STANDARDS is a two-piece math rock band fronted by guitarist Marcos Mena and featuring drummer Forrest Rice (mem. Covet). The pair boast a fruitful combination of musical chops and catchy guitar-driven melodies which has garnished popularity among fans who laud STANDARDS for their uniquely danceable brand of complex instrumental rock. SISTER RAY, the project of Edmonton-born songwriter Ella Coyes, was conceived out of necessity; a self-designed vehicle built to examine trauma with unflinching honesty. Armed with a voice that soars and scrapes in equal measure, Coyes converts first-person recollections of big, complicated love into universally potent allegories. Raised on the expansive prairies of Sturgeon County, Sister Ray’s music is steeped in a wide range of cultural influences. With gospel bluegrass and 90’s country playing in the background of their youth, it was the traditional Métis music played at home that not only brought them closer to their heritage, but taught them a form of storytelling rooted in collective value, resilience, and safety.
Communion, the 2022 debut album by Sister Ray, is a raw, meticulously-crafted portrait of momentous, ordinary moments; experiences that define your past, and instruct how you move through the world. Quickly met with critical acclaim, the album was longlisted for the 2022 Polaris Prize, and Pitchfork deemed it “a complex study of webs of interpersonal hurt, and a celebration of emotional survival.” They have been featured on Audiotree, Paste, NPR, and more, along with appearances at Pitchfork Festival in Paris & London, Primavera Weekender, and headline and support dates across North America and Europe.
Teeth, their new EP on Royal Mountain Records, came from a need for space and the repercussions conditional to this desire. “I was thinking often about intimacy and avoidance—crawling around to find where my place would be,” Coyes says. The songs were written quickly and vigorously, mimicked through the recording process, crafted by Coyes over five days, recruiting Ginla ( the Brooklyn based duo behind Communion and early Adrienne Lenker) as collaborators and producers. With three originals and a spectral cover of “I Never Will Marry,” inspired by Linda Ronstadt’s interpretation, Coyes discerns big and small epiphanies in Teeth. Their yearning tone and staggering honesty trickles throughout and the erosion leads to an opening—vacant, unfamiliar, and with room to breathe.

If you've listened to the show then you know how I feel about missing openers at shows. Mae Krell is the exact reason why I never miss openers. I had the distinct pleasure in seeing Mae perform at the Mercury Lounge in NYC. I was compelled after the show to run up to her and tell her how I felt about what I just experienced. Not only did I witness her do something extremely special on stage but I got to know her and understand why I felt the way I did that evening. Mae's storytelling brings you on a rollercoaster of emotions and once the ride stops, you find yourself wanting to go again. We find ourselves in a world of over abundance and listening to Mae's music make me feel like all my anxiety has been whisked away and my life simpler.

In case you haven't heard, one of LA's finest garage-psych aficionados, Charles Moothart (best known for his work with Ty Segall and Fuzz), released his new"apocalyptic pop" record, Black Holes Don't Choke, released on March 8th via In The Red Records.
LA garage-psych maestro Charles Moothart (formerly CFM) released his new LP, Black Holes Don't Choke. Announced at the beginning of December, Moothart has shared a host of singles from the record, which includes today's focus track, "Hold On". Moothart's signature heavy fuzz is still present, however it takes a bit of a backseat to his newly-present vocals as they swing across the track, building to the tracks infectious, titular chorus.
Black Holes Don't Choke is meant to be a present meditation. It was written, recorded, and mixed entirely by Charles Moothart in his Los Angeles studio, and he plays all of the music heard on the album. The implementation of samplers is a noteworthy development as well as the general inclusion of more electronic elements.
Still, the album sounds at home in Moothart's universe of music to date. The album reflects the here and now. It embraces the elements and sounds of the present without glamorizing any tense - past, present, or future. It conveys a feeling of chaotic love and empowerment within a time of existential turmoil - aiming to lift up what positives exist in a world riddled with toxicity and complexity.Thanks for listening!!!
