  • No, despite the title, we promise you this is still a music podcast and not a sports one.

The touring company of Robbie Williams have successfuly won a lawsuit in court against Formula 1 for cancelling their post-GP gig in Melbourne in 2020.

Meanwhile, the major sporting codes in Australia continue to annoy us by booking international acts for pre-game entertainment. This time, it's the AFL booking Katy Perry.

  • We traverse the artistic spectrum of Ben Jones - from Writing, recording and releasing a spontaneous EP after a few beers on a Saturday night, to playing a completely improvised set at MONA in Tasmania.

Ben plies his trade as part of several projects - he’s one half of duos Trash Stash and The Visor Guy, while also leaving room for whichever spontaneous creations come in between.

  • Stop freaking out! We're back to load you ears up with our opinions on news.

We kick things off with a look at some fresh technology (that may or may not involve AI) aimed at making sure artists get paid every time their song is played on community radio stations.

Next, we dive into some comments coming out of the NSW Chris Minns government, as it looks to tighten up on what can and can't be done on ANZAC day. It looks like gigs and festivals might get the chop, and some have been quick to point out what they're calling another example of double standards when it comes to music and culture in NSW.

  • Characters is the mesmerising, difficult-to-define project of Benjamin Myer Welch and Alistar Karl-Crooks. Born on the Central Coast, Characters only exists thanks to both men upending their lives to create music together based solely on a gut feeling.

Their output so far vindicates that call. They've released three tracks to the public and have dozens more to share. What we've heard to this point is unique, sophisticated and dripping in creative chemistry.

In this episode of Homebrewed, Eamonn goes deep with Ben and Al, exploring the unlikely forces that put them in a room together, the processes through which they've created their music, and the unbridled enthusiasm and ambition that they're channeling into Characters.

  • Sydney Uni has joined a movement for founding set of principles relating to AI and music creation.

    Fast stats/info:

25% of music producers are using AI (music business worldwide) 20% of independent artists have used AI music tools (Music Ally) YouTube Music (formerly Google Music) are adding an AI DJ

Sydney University has joined a 50-strong coalition of supporters for a founding set of principles which outline the responsible use of AI in music creation.

The founding document for these principles came back in March from two of the biggest companies in global music - Audio equipment manufacturer, Roland and label, Universal Music group

The press release when this was launched labelled the collaboration between Roland and Universal “a strategic relationship in support of music artists and creators worldwide”

They describe the campaign as “ a series of clarifying statements relating to the responsible use of AI in music creation, and will advocate their adoption across the music industry and creative community. The principles highlight the opportunity for innovation with AI in music production, composition, and songwriting while underscoring the need for transparency, equity, and community involvement.”

Visit aiformusic.info if you want to see for yourself

The seven core principles, or “clarifying statements,” are:

We believe music is central to humanity. We believe humanity and music are inseparable. We believe that technology has long supported human artistic expression, and applied sustainably, AI will amplify human creativity. We believe that human-created works must be respected and protected. We believe that transparency is essential to responsible and trustworthy AI. We believe the perspectives of music artists, songwriters, and other creators must be sought after and respected. We are proud to help bring music to life.

While Kalani is relatively new to us, he's been making music in and around The Central Coast for years. After a bit of time away from recording and playing live, Kalani is back and more determined than ever to build a proper career out of his art; and he wants to bring as many people with him as he can.

  • In this rambling episode of the Music News, Cam and Eamonn discuss Spotify's new partnership with EAG and Sabrina Carpenter to give exclusive ticket access to top fans ahead of her Short N’ Sweet US tour in September.

Cam starts by declaring he was considering leaving Spotify, but the lack of alternatives, plus a good user experience is what kept him on the streaming service.

Eamonn meanwhile is concerned about Spotify being introduced to the ticketing market, as they could soon become a service too big and too powerful to provide any competition for.
