Originally broadcast as a webinar on 27 April 2024, Edward Dosz,PhD explains how bowel disorders, including conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Leaky Gut Syndrome, pose significant challenges to individuals’ gastrointestinal health and overall well-being. IBS is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, while Leaky Gut involves increased intestinal permeability, potentially leading to systemic inflammation and various symptoms beyond the digestive system.
The causes of these disorders are multifaceted, including genetic predispositions, environmental factors, stress, and dietary triggers. Poor dietary choices, such as diets high in processed foods and low in fibre, can exacerbate symptoms by disrupting gut microbiota balance and intestinal barrier function.
Nutrition is a crucial aspect of managing these conditions, with emerging research highlighting the role of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid typically produced by gut bacteria. Butyrate plays a pivotal role in maintaining gut integrity, reducing inflammation, and regulating immune responses. Its ability to enhance intestinal barrier function and modulate gut microbiota composition makes it a promising nutritional therapeutic for alleviating symptoms associated with bowel disorders.
Incorporating butyrate-rich foods, such as fibre-rich vegetables and resistant starches, into the diet may help restore gut health and alleviate some of the symptoms of IBS and Leaky Gut Syndrome. Lissa Leader is a nutritional therapist, and has her own company – Nutrileader – and also works for Optibac, so is well placed to speak about the microbiome and healthy ageing.
Lissa explains how the gut microbiome keeps changing from birth all the way through childhood and adulthood, and how this can affect a broad range of conditions, including: allergies, digestive health, bone and muscle strength, “inflammaging” and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. We also discuss the very different microbial balance in the urogenital tract, and their potential role in urinary tract infections, thrush and localised tissue health, particularly during menopause.
Lissa then goes on to describe how best to support all of this is a clinical setting, including the pros and cons of a number of dietary factors, and how to choose the right probiotic supplement.
“If we look at, say, the Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus have multiple strains, one of which is the GR-1 strain, and the GR-1 strain will
adhere to cells in the urogenital tract, whereas the GG strain will actually adhere to cells in the gastrointestinal tract. So we can see that strains can exert completely different effects on the body because that’s where they naturally like to gravitate to and and adhere to.”

Katie Sheen is a mindfulness teacher and speaker, a nutritional therapist, and has a Masters degree in education.
She shares her experiences using mindfulness with nutrition clients – how mindfulness can help with making nutritional changes, and how nutritional support can help with being more settled and mindful. “It’s a fascinating two-way street we can offer people”
Katie also shares how mindfulness and self-compassion helped her deal with her own cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
“And what was amazing was that in that moment I thought: My poor body… my poor body… I can see how much it’s suffering. And again, what a gift to be able to switch immediately into compassion, rather than fear – and there definitely was fear, I’m not going to pretend there wasn’t fear, there was fear as well, but the fear wasn’t of my own body. And that was one of those doorways for me into really taking care of myself.”
Themes include deep listening, compassionate speech, how to become more self-aware and use that to showing kindness and care to ourselves.

Patricia Daly is a nutritional therapist and ketogenic diet expert, specialising in cancer. Most of us have come across at least the basics of the ketogenic diet, but Patricia is able to provide updates and insights that add new layers to its application. Her own experience in both following and supporting people with the ketogenic diet is invaluable, alongside her collaborations with like-minded health professionals.
Patricia explains about ketones and metabolic flexibility, the potential benefits of a ketogenic diet, when you would avoid a ketogenic diet and useful tests to help you figure this out, and some practicalities along the way.

“I started my journey in the boot of the car. I didn’t even know, I didn’t want to know what they were going to do to me. Then I moved to sort of the child seat and then to passenger, until I had enough and started to drive. So that’s basically what I love to see in my clients as well, that’s people leaving from the boot to the driving seat.”

Dr. Tom O’Bryan has been educating us about the potential dangers of wheat and gluten for many years, and how eating wheat could potentially develop into autoimmune conditions.
In this episode we focus on wheat and brain health, including Alzheimer’s disease, brain fog and depression. Dr. Tom talks us through the immune response to wheat, via toll-like receptor IV and zonulin in the gut, through to the blood brain barrier and glial cell activity in the brain.
