  • This is the first of what will be a series of episodes where I compile responses to the question I ask to end each of my episodes, "What advice would you give your early comedy self?"

    Hear what:

    -Brian Netzel (@thebriannetzel) would tell his early comedy self to put down;

    -Albert Escobedo (@albertmescobedo) has learned he doesn't need as much of;

    -Leigh Anne Jasheway (accidentalcomic.com) doesn't need to focus on;

    -Turner Sparks (@turnersparks) learned about what an audience wants far too late;

    -Laura Sanders (@yaylaurasanders) wishes her younger self wouldn't have focused on;

    -Andy Andrist (@andyandrist) wishes he knew about sticking to times;

    -Adam Palmeter (@adampalmeter) thinks treading lightly would have helped him with;

    -Kellen Terrett (@drterrett) and I wish for you, our listener (Mike!);

    -Sam Miller (@sammillercomedian) would tell his younger self to steal to make himself good at comedy;

    and

    -Curt Neill (@curtneill) wished he realized so much sooner.

  • In this the 50th (!!) episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy, I am delighted to chat with my friend, the hilarious, the prolific, the hardest working man in his house, Kyle Kinane.

    In this convo, notorious non-worker-outer Kyle asks about ways to start and maintain motivation for working out, even if you donā€™t have a gym membership or very much fancy equipment. Stick around to hear what no-equipment two-exercise workout routine designed to improve strength and energy piqued Kyleā€™s interest.

    And as a new cat dad, Kyle introduces us to his beautiful boys, and they even make an appearance or two that you can hear throughout. We also touch on many things comedy, making tough movie choices, and how crowdwork can be effectively used and the surprising truth about what it means to like it.

    Thanks for stoppin by!

  • For this episode, I reflect on the amazing conversation I had with Matt Braunger recently. Matt is a hilarious comedian with multiple albums and podcasts over the years, and we had a wonderful conversation talking about comedy, how he stays healthy, and so much more!

    But you won't be hearing any of it.

    Because I messed up the recording. I fumbled it. When I played it back, I had not recorded any of his audio. And so we won't be listening to that conversation. Sorry about that. Instead, it's just me talking for a little while. Which is also fine. I like talking, and I talk about things I've learned throughout this year of being a podcaster and personal trainer, and the challenges of balancing being a host or a human. And there might even be a joke or two in there.

    So yeah, thanks for hanging out this week, and I promise next week won't be lost to the ages! It's episode 50 - the big 5-0! - and I chat with Kyle Kinane, friend of Matt Braunger!

  • Jokes! Gym! Jamie! Colson!

    In this engaging conversation, my fellow comedian Jamie Colson shares her experiences with pets, fitness, comedy, and hot tubs! From the challenges of cohabitating with a dog and cat to her fitness journey involving Pokemon Go, Jamie's humor comes through as she discusses her love for hot tubs and the comfort they bring.

    Our conversation also touches on personal growth, learning new skills, and the culinary challenges she faces, particularly with cooking eggs. We also share a bit about our recent body swap performance, which had been a long-time goal of mine (to become someone else).

    Jamie touches on the importance of motivation and structure in life, and I share some tips from previous guests on how to scaffold a bit of that into your life. Finally, Jamie dives into some of her favorite music and podcasts, highlighting how these enrich her daily experiences. We also unpack some of the nuances of perfection versus flawlessness, the impact of podcasts on our lives, and the realities of adult entertainment content.

    You can follow Jamie Colson on the gram and the tok at @jamie_tells_jokes - and find her at Bangers and Brews every month in Eugene! Next one December 7th!

  • Nathan! Hart! This conversation with Eugene comedian Nathan Hart, upon his return from more than a month on the road across the States during this wild election, was a great opportunity to hear about what brings us together more than what divides us. For Nathan, that's comedy. Hear about election night in Nashville, or Friday at The Fest in Florida, from the voice of a comic who's doing whatever he can to find opportunities to do standup.

    Hear how Planet Fitness can be a haven on the road, and just what he did to stay fresh in his Subaru, which had a few rough patches of its own. From a below freezing night in Wyoming, to a stop at the Grand Canyon, Nathan was often tested in ways he didn't expect.

    I hope you enjoy hearing about Nathan's trip across the States and run-ins with comedy and fitness as much as I did!

  • Jes Anderson is a comedian and mom and human in Seattle! I had a delightful time talking with her. She discusses the balance between her day job and comedy, her experience in a comedy competition, and the driving factors behind picking up that first mic.

    A former crossfit coach and gym manager, she talks about some crossfit misconceptions, and her current relationship with the gym, which she enters three times a week and even uses a heavy piece of equipment in. She shares some of her secrets for tricking herself into exercising, and how exercise has changed for her over time.

    We also touch on some comedy drama she was a part of as owner and booker of The Comedy Bar in Seattle, audience expectations, and the challenges of navigating sensitive topics. We talk about the vibrant comedy scene in Seattle, and the podcast she co-hosts with friend of the program Sam Miller, The Tarp Report, because they love tarps so much.

  • Hey everybody! We got another Tom Rhodes banger this week! Tom and I got cut off early last week so he offered to have another chat, even though the last one was great. What a guy. If youā€™re not familiar with Tom Rhodes, heā€™s had an epic comedy career: heā€™s hosted and starred in TV shows, toured the globe, performed on every continent (except Antarctica), and is the host of a long-running podcast (ā€œTom Rhodes Smart Campā€). Heā€™s also a dear friend who has met my mother and with whom I share a love of Ja Rule.

    In this convo (part deux!), we discuss even more of his international experiences, including the time he performed for a Saudi prince and his ā€œharemā€ in the Seychelles (and the important lesson he learned about skincare on that trip).

    Normally I donā€™t spend much time speaking with guests about politics, but we even spend some time at the intersection of comedy and politics in this chat, and Tom gives his input on a certain recent event at MSG, and why he considers (the website formerly known as) Twitter a ā€œhate faucetā€.

    We explore some of the challenges and joys of international comedy and audiences, Tom shares his evolution as a comedy writer, and what he is constantly looking for in order to be able to create fresh material over the years. We also talk about a dear friend and touch on what it means to be a good friend, not only to others but to yourself, and how to continue to grow over the years.

    With all the stuff going on out there, itā€™s hard not to get down sometimes, but hopefully after listening to this conversation, you too will be saying ā€œHooray for Humanityā€!

    You can find out more about Tom Rhodes and where he will be making humans laugh next on his website www.tomrhodes.net.

  • In this conversation, I'm happy to speak with the legendary Tom Rhodes! He tours all over the globe, has a successful podcast - Tom Rhodes Smart Camp - and has had specials and albums spanning platforms and decades. Tom and I have known each other for a while, and he's always been such positive influence on me and my comedy life, and just as a friend.

    Tom and I discuss his time as an international comedian, and whether that was something he set out to become or not. We also dive into what brought him to Oregon, and you might be surprised to find out what country Tom compares Oregon to. We discuss how that same heartbreak lead him to another newfound love - hot yoga, and what it has done for his mind and his body. And plenty more.

    Unfortunately, our conversation gets cut a little short this week, but it really ends on a great note...and...we might even have another conversation lined up for you for next week, so stay tuned!

  • Welcome to the NBA season, everybody! As we start real NBA games this week, I check in with Portland Trail Blazers podcaster and former Oregonian NBA beat writer Mike Richman!

    Mike Richman! Life! Blazers! Hoops! Kids! Podcasts! Those are some of the things we talk about on this episode of Jokes and the Gym. Iā€™ve listened to, read, and watched Mikeā€™s work for about the last decade or so, in a viewership that spans continents. Iā€™ve been on his podcast once or twice as well, and I was truly delighted when he agreed to be on the pod.

    Listen as we talk about the similarities between comedy and podcasting/journalism/any kind of side hustle, his time as a dad, and some of the experiences heā€™s had following and reporting on a professional basketball team (the Portland Trail Blazers) over the past decade. Tune in to find out how he combines his love of video games and zoning out with name-brand workout equipment at the end of a long day, and how Blazers fans react when they find out where his hoops allegiance truly lies.

    What advice does Mike have for young Mike, or anyone looking to start their career in a challenging or uncertain field? Listen until the end to see what he knew when he was a kid in North Carolina, and how he might have allowed that to influence his decisions on the path heā€™s had.

    Oh! And if you stick around until the end of the podcast, you'll hear my three Blazer hot takes this year! And isn't that Blazer content what we're all here to hear? No?! Well, if it is...

    Check out more of Mike Richman on his daily podcast, Locked On Blazers, on youtube or on all the podcast platforms. It's all about the Portland Trail Blazers!

  • This is one of those conversations that when I listened back, I laughed just as hard as when I was having the conversation with this weekā€™s guest, Eve Ellenbogen! Eve and I go back to our days in Korea, which we revisit - and hear how this now-Austin-based comic viewed our dynamic back in Seoul years.

    Also, Iā€™m just gonna say it, this is a much dirtier episode than most. Might wanna earmuff the little ones hear and there, haha. Eve also touches on a previous assault that she experienced, just so you know. Our conversation goes all over the place, and itā€™s not always for the meek.

    Overall, it was great to catch up and hear about how her experiences from New York to Seoul to Edinburgh to Austin have continued to shape her and her comedy over time. We get real about losing loved ones, everyday challenges we face, and how we feel about comedy at the moment. And we laugh our asses off. Hope you get a chuckle or two out of the deal, too. Thanks for stopping by!

    I also give an intro update on my weekend away at the Savage Henry Comedy Festival, and how I worked out like a nerd most days!

  • Julia Corral! Portland! In this episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy, I sit down with fellow 41er and comedian Julia Corral, who shares her experience going from a day job to pursuing comedy full-time in Portland. Julia discusses her type A personality, the balance of urgency and relaxation in the Pacific Northwest, and her involvement with Kickstand Comedy. She reflects on her growth in comedy, her journey to sobriety, and the impact of alcohol on her personality. Our conversation also touches on spirituality (and how much of a hippie Julia is), communication in relationships, and the nuances of racism and identity in the Pacific Northwest. Julia and I also explore the complexities of cultural identity, personal growth, and the intricacies and challenges of relationships shaped by differing backgrounds. Julia shares her experiences as a Mexican American (and explains to me what ā€œchicanoā€ means) navigating her upbringing in a predominantly white culture, while also discussing her relationship with her husband and the cultural differences they encounter. We delve into comedy, touching on freedom of speech and the importance of humor in addressing societal issues. Julia reflects on her personal journey, including her struggles with anxiety and health, and emphasizes the significance of self-acceptance and growth. Our chat concludes with insights on how to embrace life's challenges and the importance of community and support in the pursuit of happiness.

  • Hi Friends! James Island is a Canadian comedian and YouTuber who I met in Korea and we sit down to catch up and talk about everything from his recent move to Montreal to the nuances of stand-up comedy. We dive deep into the challenges of navigating a new city, the impact of language on humor, and the importance of cultural sensitivity in comedy, and just in life. The weird origins of bland food even makes an appearance. It's a fun-filled episode with plenty of laughs, personal stories (we hear about Rudy's first ever open mic in Korea!), and insights into the evolving world of comedy from two old pals. So, grab your headphones and join us for a wild ride! Or maybe a nice walk.

  • This is the second of two episodes with Myq Kaplan as a guest, as our conversation was so vast it requires two full episodes on their ownsies. It was such a great convo, and in this episode we chat more about navigating a multitude of choices, including all of the jokes he has ever written. Hint! It involves doing the smallest unit of work possible, unit by unit.

    We chat about his forays into musical comedy - and you will even hear a song he has made about two topics we chat about: Art and Monetization! We continue to chat about day jobs, Aesopā€™s Fables, filberts, tigers, strawberries, and clinging. We also finally get to the steps he takes in his life to improve his health (clue: they involve steps!), how he discovered exercise, and a few of the differences between his and his beloved partnerā€™s approach to exercise. And finally, Myq answers the question - "What advice you would give your younger self?"ā€¦or does he???

    If you want to hear what we talked about to get here, please check out episode 38, the podcast from which this podcast sprang!

    You can find Myq virtually on social media, in the world at one of his shows, and in further 0ā€™s and 1ā€™s on his website, www.myqkaplan.com - enjoy!

  • Myq Kaplan is a delightful comedian, podcaster, and library-goer! He has multiple specials out there in the world, with more on the way, and he is this weekā€™s guest on Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy.

    For never having had a conversation (with each other), I would say this conversation was a success! We get into the origins of his unique name spelling, how gratitude makes its way into Myqā€™s life, what Jack Lemmon-inspired line he often uses to start the day, reasons why he appreciates the French language, how to cling more lightly to things (even those things that we love), and how to navigate the seemingly endless choices and what idea from James Clear (author of ā€œAtomic Habitsā€) made that much more navigable for him.

    Thanks for stopping by this week, check out Myq Kaplan and his many works online and on the socials, and be sure to stop by again next week to hear the sequel to this weekā€™s conversation! Ooh, a sequel! Letā€™s hope it lives up to the original!

    I actually just recorded a delightful podcast with an hilarious comedian who you probably know and love, but I didn't want to rush it out.

    So for this week, I made a shorter solo episode, in which I give some life updates, talk about what's coming up, discuss group fitness classes, and share some of my hopes for myself and others. It's actually a good listen!

  • Comedian and visual artist (and my good friend!) Abhishek Kulkarni joins me on episode 37 of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy to catch up after his return from yet another art residency (and more!) in Maine. From clueless townsfolk to Mister Rogers in roller skates, Abhishek has quite a few stories to tell. I love hearing Abhi's questions, and how he attempts to blur the lines between science and art.

    We also dive deep into his physical and mental health, and how he has dealt with those aspects throughout his life. Growing up in a place that didn't believe ADHD was a thing, what coping mechanisms has he developed over time, and have they impacted his comedy?

    We explore the lines between medication and meditation, and how the two have interacted over time. A long-time practitioner or meditation, Abhi gives some background on his experiences in meditation, and provides a few pointers for those thinking about getting into the quiet ritual.

    We end on a number of pretty joyful notes, which makes sense when you hear the advice Abhi would give his younger self, and whether or not he takes his own medicine these days. And stick around to hear the prayer Abhi says before he performs, and see if it brings a tear to your eye, too.

  • Check out Rudy and Rob from The Innsiders on this weekā€™s edition of Jokes and the Gym. This episode feels half like two old friends catching up and half like a promo for one of those friendsā€™ podcasts, The Innsiders. We spend a fair amount of time chatting about our travels, as the two of us have both traveled at length across the globe. We talk about our time in Korea, and successes that our friends have found after their time in the RoK.

    We connect on our shared love of early bedtimes, severely limiting our alcohol intake, and other healthy habits we wouldnā€™t have considered many moons ago. We get into Robā€™s preferred training split (3 months on, 3 ____ off), his go-to bodyweight workouts, and our differing approaches to putting out content (one of us is definitely NOT a perfectionistā€¦).

  • In another movie-heavy episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy, my guest Chad Opitz and I talk about many things comedy as well as our love for movies and what itā€™s like for him living in a place that embraces movies. Chad discusses his move to LA, why he did it, some classic character actor stories, and what series starring Billy Bob Thornton you can find him in as an Easter Egg (itā€™s somewhere in season 4ā€¦).

    Big ideas in this episode are finding joy in comedy, as well as how to navigate anxiety in the comedy world, including the one change that many of us can make, which my younger self might not have been too happy with. We discuss a new term to me, ā€œbrain zapsā€, and how they can impact you. And I try to coin a phrase about fatigue that may not make any sense.

    We talk about writing processes and tracking habits, and how they can help you grow, or how they can be so detailed that thereā€™s almost no use of them. Chad offers his younger self about taking risks and embracing his unique style, while still having fun. Chad is a damn delight, both onstage and off, and I hope you enjoy our conversation. • In my 4th of 4 conversations with fellow Oregon Country Fair (OCF) folk, I speak with psychedelic facilitator, spoken word performer, and Whitebird Clinic team member Nitai Alekseiwicz. We have a delightful conversation whose theme seems to be around making distinctions among our actions.

    We talk about how to really grok it, the difference between routine and ritual, being prepared versus being ready (and why one of them might not cut it), and some of the joys and pains of living in a town the size of ours.

    In her work with psilocybin, we discuss respecting the medicine that you're working with, some outcomes she has seen people experience, and how she has been there for others on their trips. It sounds pretty cool!

    Overall, it's a delightfully woo conversation that offers an interesting look into enjoying everything from comedy to psychedelics!

    You can find out more about Nitai on instagram at @sacredlife.ritual (website coming soon...)
