  • In this special episode of Knit A Spell, Iā€™m sharing my personal experience with Hurricane Milton and how I used a protection sigil, magic, and knitting to keep myself, my family, and our home safe.

As the eye of the storm passed directly over Sarasota, Florida, I combined practical action with magical intention to create a spell jar for protection. Using water from Hurricane Helene, Good Luck Oil from Madame Pamita, and a sigil I designed, I crafted a powerful protection spellā€”and then turned to knitting to keep myself grounded through the chaos.

In this episode, Iā€™ll walk you through:

ā€¢ How I created and activated my protection sigil

ā€¢ The magical elements I used, including hurricane water and ice cubes

ā€¢ My knitting project during the storm: a center-out shawl that became a tarot spread cloth

ā€¢ Reflections on how magic and knitting work together to bring calm in stressful times

I also share some critical tips for staying grounded during a natural disasterā€”like finding trustworthy news sourcesā€”and give a huge shoutout to the amazing line workers who helped restore power so quickly!  Check out the after show for Patreon subscribers where I share 5 ways you can empower yourself as a knitter during times of stress!

  • Hey fellow magic-makers and knitters! In our season finale, we wrapped up with a whimsical dive into the art of charming bind offs, exploring not just the technical side of knitting, but the enchantment it brings to our crafting and the craft itself. From discussing the magic of finishing projects (and the struggle therein) to the innovative spell swatch idea, we covered a myriad of ways knitting weaves into our lives and practices.

We explore several bind off techniques ā€“ everything from the basics to the more complex like Jenny's super stretchy bind off and the Kitchener Stitch. Each method opened up new possibilities for our projects, and hopefully, yours too!

We couldn't help but get a little sentimental, reminiscing about the season and the amazing guests we've had. A huge thank you to our listeners and Patreon supporters for being such an integral part of Knit A Spell. Remember, while we take a summer pause, there's a whole catalog of episodes to explore and keep the magic alive!

Looking forward to casting on with you all in the fall for Season 6, where we'll unravel the mysteries of enchanted tools and containers.

Stay magical and keep on knitting!
    Katie and Jim

  • In this episode, Katie Rempe & James Divine dive into the magical world of embroidery with the supremely talented Christi Johnson, author of 'Mystical Stitches: Embroidery for Personal Empowerment and Magical Embellishment.'

Christi shares her journey from the high-stress world of fashion design to discovering the meditative and creative power of embroidery. She reveals how this craft became a mystical act for her, transforming mere fabric into a canvas of cosmic visions and botanical beauties.

Katie and Christi explore how embracing imperfection and the chaos of creation can lead to truly personal and magical creations, reflecting the very essence of the creator. They discuss the symbiotic relationship between crafting and spirituality, and how anyone can infuse their projects with intention and magic, regardless of their skill level.

Christi also gives us a sneak peek into her upcoming book, 'The Art of Embroidery Design,' promising even more insights into creating your own embroidery works of art. We also talk about the importance of being present in our crafting, connecting with our materials, and the science behind why crafts like embroidery can lead to a meditative state.

Whether you're an experienced embroiderer or just curious about adding a touch of magic to your knitwear, this episode is packed with inspiration, laughs, and plenty of reasons to pick up a needle and thread!

  • Welcome to Episode 127 of Knit a Spell! This time around, Jim and I unraveled the concept of TINK-ing - thatā€™s knit spelled backwards, for the uninitiated. We delved deep into the philosophical and metaphysical implications of undoing our work, whether it's stitches on a needle or patterns in our lives.

I kicked things off by introducing the concept of TINKing, or undoing our knitting as a metaphor for reflection and reconsideration in our craft and personal lives. We explore common scenarios that prompt knitters to undo their work, from mistakes to aesthetic changes, and Jim had some novice insights that were enlightening.

The episode takes a mystical turn as we considered undoing in the magical realm, including an interesting practice involving crocheting a chain to represent something one wishes to undo. Jim shares how undoing our knitting can parallel releasing or altering intentions or energies in the magical practice, from breaking habits to transforming relationships.

How would you use the act of un-knitting as a magical act?

  • We dive into the topic of gnomes and why knitting them are so satisfying with our special guest, designer and podcast host of Imagined Landscapes: Sarah Schira! Katie and Jim talk with Sarah about how knitting entered her life during a much-needed time and how gnomes found their way into being her most beloved subject matter.

Sarah shares a story about her interaction with what might have been a real-live gnome, and Jim bonds with our guest over their mutual love of gnomes and how Jim found a book on the topic that influenced him forever.

Sarah reflect on how gnomes are a perfect project to learn and improve on knitting skills because they can be more easily seen as play instead of work. This is a wonderfully inspiring episode on how knitting and everything we do can carry intention!
