  • Danielle's journey with sugar started in childhood.
She remembers that sugar was a massive part of her upbringing.

With her family, she always had ice cream after dinner. Sugar was always a treat.
They even had a trunk in their house that had little goodie bags with sweet treats for whenever she and her brother were good.

So there was a lot of rewarding with sugar.
As a child, Danielle was an extremely picky eater. She ate lots of carbs, like white pasta and rice cakes... which, she says, no doubt really put her on a blood sugar roller coaster at a very young age.

Danielle says that sugar was the coping and addictive mechanisms that had been handed down through her family line.
Her mom, she explains, was someone who never felt emotions, and she used food to numb and escape. So Danielle got that pattern from her.

But then in her late twenties, Danielle started looking more deeply into her early childhood traumas and what contributed to the addictive patterning in her brain.
And that was the start of an awakening for her.

Listen to Danielle describe her slow 3-year process to finally feel free from the hold sugar had on her.

    Find Danielle here.

  • Krissy grew up eating a normal American diet: lots of carb-heavy processed and packaged foods.
When she was younger, she was active, which together with her tall frame helped her stay slim.

Then in her late 30s, stress and hormones started to change her body. She consulted a personal trainer and started calorie counting and eating less, without necessarily changing what she was eating.

But the "eat less, move more" approach left her feeling starving, hangry, and miserable! But she was motivated to lose a few pounds and get to her goal... which unfortunately, she didn't.

Only once Krissy learned more about the functional approach to the body did she begin to really understand that she was burned out from the stress of her job, overexercising, and undereating.

So Krissy signed up to study ant the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Then she studied functional lab testing.

And that's when she learned more about perimenopause, stress, and hormones.

In this episode, Krissy explains the difference between PRE-menopause and PERI-menopause. She also explains the role of progesterone and estrogen and the symptoms of hormonal changes in women.

And Krissy explains how stress management, strength training, lifestyle and diet changes - especially reducing sugar! - can help reduce perimenopause symptoms.

    Find Krissy here and here.

  • My guest Dr. Paul Kolodzik trained as an MD in emergency medicine.
In this episode, he freely admits that like most physicians, he didn't get much training on nutrition.

But what he learned over a period of time is that avoiding sugar, eating low carb, and making sure you get adequate protein really is the way to both better health and better longevity.

Dr. Kolodzik explains what insulin resistance is, and why it's a much bigger issue than cholesterol for the vast majority of his patients.

But in med school, he says that the approach to insulin resistance was to treat it with more insulin. And there was very little emphasis on the fact that pre-diabetes can be reversed with lifestyle changes, including cutting sugar.

Why isn't insulin resistance talked about more? And what can we as patients and consumers do in order to take control of our health?

Listen to Dr. Paul on Episode 172 to find out!

  • This episode actually comes from a request from listeners of this podcast to talk about the long-term benefits that I've experienced after all these years of living sugar-free.

Because it can seem pretty hard to imagine what it can be like to live day after day, feeling free from cravings and free from the hold that sugar has on you.

Oh! And I just wanted to clarify that when I say "sugar free", for me personally, that includes added and refined sugar, refined grains or flour, and also nut flours, and sweeteners.
So what sugar free means for me doesn't necessarily have to be the same for you.

The first long term benefit is way more energy. Not necessarily to run a marathon (I don't want to!), but it's the type of energy that gives me this enthusiasm for life.
And this type of energy allows me to get through the day without any energy slumps, which I certainly couldn't do when I was still eating sugar.

What are the other long term benefits that I've experienced?

zero cravings peace around foodfat loss in all the strategic places better concentrationmore mental claritybetter digestionless swelling, inflammation, and joint painless headachesmore stable mood

    And many more!

If YOU want to want to feel your best for as long as possible, for the rest of your life, listen to this episode to find out how "life after sugar" can benefit YOU.

  • Wendi and I have been good friends for several years. We have lots of things in common, including living our lives with less sugar and more joy. We can't chat without breaking into giggles!

In this episode, we talk about whole foods, as well as Wendi's prepping and self-reliance skills that help her look after her large family.

But especially, we talk about life, and how we choose to live it. Wendi recognizes that like most of us, she tends to lean towards comfort and getting out of pain versus dealing with the difficulties of life and choosing the joy and the freedom that comes with dealing with reality.

Wendi freely admits that all her life, she's turned to food to cope with her pain. And now she's learning to work through her emotions, instead of eating to cope with her pain.

She's learning that she can just feel the pain, be sad about the pain, and move on.

Wendi and I don't take ourselves too seriously. But we do talk about serious subjects from time to time, such as learning coping skills, choosing how we want to live our lives, and dealing with pain.

Find Wendi's podcast The Joyful Prepper here, and her free Facebook group here.

  • Tracey recently celebrated her two-year anniversary for intermittent fasting.
But sugar was always a problem during her eating window.

Tracey believed she really had a sugar addiction because when she would eat sugar, like cake and ice cream, she would eat the desserts and then always want to go back for more.
In fact, she would eat as much sweet stuff as she could, and the next day she would feel awful.

For Tracey, it wasn't an easy journey. Even though she loved intermittent fasting, certain types of foods tripped her up. Butter pecan ice cream was her "kryptonite", as she calls it. She'd managed one week without sugar or ice cream, then two. But then she'd always go back to it.

But since since May 1st 2022, Tracey says that she truly broke her sugar addiction.
    How did she achieve that?

  • Today's episode is going to clarify the relationship between alcohol, sugar, and cravings.

But first, a disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, so nothing in this podcast should be construed as being medical advice.
Also, I'm not here to tell you whether or not you're "allowed" to drink alcohol any more than I'm here to tell you if you're "allowed" to eat sugar.

    This is a judgment-free zone.

So here's the thing: A lot of people come to me for help when they've already given up alcohol and find themselves craving sugar.
If you find that alcoholic drinks, whatever their sugar level, trigger cravings in you, whether it's for more alcohol or for sugary or salty and crunchy snacks, then that's something to look out for.

In fact, a lot of people who don't drink alcohol anymore struggle with sugar cravings. And it's because the brain and the body are craving a sugar fix, or more specifically, a dopamine high.

What's the connection between alcohol, sugar, the brain, and the body (especially the liver)?

  • In this week's episode, I'm truly honoured to be chatting with Dr. Nicole Avena who is the author of her new book called "Sugarless".

Dr. Avena is a Princeton research neuroscientist and a pioneer in the field of food addiction, with over 16 million views of her TED-Ed video, "How Sugar Affects the Brain".

In this episode, we talk about Dr. Avena's own background in the 1980s with food and sugar. She explains what led her to study and research the effects of sugar on the brain and the body.

Yes, we both recognize that we have access to ALL the info about added sugars, but are things changing? Unfortunately, no.
Dr. Avena believes that in fact, things are getting worse. For example, why do we still reward children (and adults) with sugar? Why are ultra-processed, engineered food products so prevalent in our North American society?

Dr. Avena's book dives into how understanding your relationship with sugar is key. She and I talk about practical ways to get UNstuck from the love-hate spiral many of us have with sugar. Dr. Avena also answers some questions that my listeners sent in for her.

  • As Charlotte was growing up, her parents used food to reward good behaviour. This led her to develop an early love of sugar, especially chocolate.

During her teenage years in the 1990s, Charlotte felt pressure to conform to society's ideal of a thin body, and so she aimed to look attractive and lose weight rapidly through dieting. And her weight yo-yoed as her relationships began and ended.

It was only later in life when Charlotte learned to see food as nourishment rather than rewards or restrictions that she experienced all the benefits of cutting sugar and flour.

One of those benefits was the end of yo-yo dieting, and enjoying her stable weight.
Another huge benefit was the feeling of fullness.
Charlotte had always felt hungry - both nutritionally and emotionally. In fact, she thought something was wrong with her, like she was broken. But when she cut sugar and flour, at long last she was able to experience the feeling of satiety, and peace around food.

  • I hate to say it, but many of us have been fed some pretty widespread myths about food - especially sugar - over the years.

This episode is a recording of a live online workshop that I gave in January 2024, where I bust two myths:
    1. The myth that craveworthy foods are everywhere, that we can't get away from them.
    2. The myth that it's impossible to be sugar free and enjoy life.

For myth #1, I reframe that sugar is "everywhere". Certainly it feels that way. When you're reading labels at the grocery store, you're very likely going to find sugar on a vast majority of labels.

But as you'll hear, foods that don't contain added sugars are also everywhere... If you know where to look!

You'll also learn how it's possible for you to develop the capacity of enjoying the celebrations of life independent of what's on your plate or in your glass. People, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. can all be celebrated without sugar. Yes, you can live without the happy brain rush and still be happy!

    How? Listen to Episode 164!

  • This is a shared episode with Michelle, host of the Fast and Fabulous podcast. We talk about our experiences with perimenopause, and the link with sugar.

Perimenopause hits women at different ages and with a wide variety of symptoms. Although it's a natural process, it can cause all kinds of physical and emotional symptoms.

What if intermittent fasting, together with cutting down on sugary and processed foods could help lessen perimenopause symptoms?

  • Julie used to eat junk food until a car accident led her to gain weight and feel unwell.
That led to her holistic healing journey.

She decided to follow a program that required her to weigh and measure her food, but she didn't really understand why she was doing it, she said.

What inspired her the most was witnessing her mother's transformation with sugar-free and flour-free living. At first, Julie saw it as "strict", but when she saw all the benefits, she also changed her diet to eat foods that give her energy and make her feel her best.

Julie explains how her sugar-free diet clears her channel for energy work and receiving messages, allowing her to better help clients. As a psychic medium, she reports that sugar clouds her abilities and makes sessions more difficult. It's like sugar fogs the messages that she receives.

In this episode, Julie describes how the food we eat can help us numb uncomfortable feelings... or ground us, quieten our anxiety, and allow our energy to flow.

  • Reducing or cutting sugar is usually seen as something positive (if a little marginal). And sugary or sweet foods are relatively easy to spot.
But recently, I've been getting this question from my listeners: What about flour?

And: Why don't you eat flour, Netta?

Because that means no bread, no crackers, no bagels, no pasta... Wait! So how do you make a sandwich? What do you put your spaghetti sauce on?

And what's wrong with flour anyway?

Well... There's nothing wrong with flour! If eating foods that contain flour makes you feel good - carry on!
But for some of us, foods made with flour affect our body or our behaviour in a way that makes us suffer.

So in this episode, you'll learn:

that eating flour-based foods affects each person differentlyhow I feel when I eat foods that are made with flourhow flour is metabolized by the bodythe similarity of flour and sugarthe difference between whole grains and powdered grainswhich types of foods contain flourwhether or not you should eat flour (this is a tricky one!)

  • Michele is a busy mom of 4, and a military wife. She's also a personal trainer and health coach.

Her journey started after having her third child, when she became so much busier and realized that she was getting out of breath just from climbing the stairs.

She started eating better, but a few years after, she started experiencing auto-immune issues (they run in her family). She had all the tests, but she felt that the doctors didn't really offer her non-pharmaceutical solutions.

What really helped her was when she started her self-healing holistic approach. She cut out gluten and dairy, because in the USA they're so common in processed foods.

Michele also started looking after her gut health. She decided to vastly reduce sugar too. She learned to reframe food so as to nourish her body and feel good, because she used to eat her emotions.

Now Michele feels more confident in her food choices and in her identity in general, because she's found what's healthy for her, for her children, and for her future.

  • Teresa struggled with sugar addiction and health issues related to high sugar intake for years.

When her naturopath suggested she cut out sugar, she thought it was "extreme"!
But she did it - she cut out sugar, sweeteners, and refined carbs, cold turkey.

It worked for a while, but eventually, Teresa realized that it was extremely difficult and unsustainable long-term.

After further health issues and trauma, Teresa realized she needed to reduce sugar for her own health and future goals, not just because someone else said so. This shift in mindset helped her make sustainable changes.

Teresa faced a lot of social pressure and judgment when she changed her diet. People constantly questioned and mocked her food choices. They also thought cutting sugar was extreme!

Today, Teresa doesn't see how she eats as "extreme". In fact, she's more mindful about added/hidden sugars and makes intentional choices. And she feels free!

  • Steve Campbell played sports growing up, but an injury in high school caused him to gain weight.

His dad was a bodybuilder and gave him an example of discipline with fitness and eating. But he struggled to maintain that himself.

Steve tried all kinds of diets, including keto. He would be very disciplined during the week but have "cheat days" on weekends where he overindulged. At night when exhausted, he would reach for unhealthy comfort foods and overeat.

Steve stumbled across the Life After Sugar podcast and it spoke to him. His outlook changed. He cut out all sugar for 2 weeks and also introduced intermittent fasting.
He lost 5-6 pounds quickly and has seen reduced headaches and more energy.

Now when he feels in control around food, it frees him up mentally to be fully present with his family and others.
He wants to live an extremely long life with his wife and kids. This motivates his health choices. Find Steve's podcast One Big Thing here and Ditch the Suits here.

  • Sandhya is a pharmacist in Australia.
In 2019 she started getting symptoms of breathlessness and palpitations. So she went to the doctor and got everything checked out, but the only thing they could find was that she was pre-diabetic, so her doctor told her she needed to lose some weight.

She recognized that she overate, particularly sugary things.
So she decided to do a self-hypnosis course for 6 weeks with guidelines on how to cut out sugar, and it was life-changing for her.

Sandhya managed to change her entire diet to not include added sugar. She experimented with substituting one ingredient for another, so it wasn't too overwhelming. Plus her husband jumped on board and they both lost weight!

And the most important aspect in her transformation was that she was able to reframe how she sees sugar. Sandhya says that she hasn't been able to go back to eating sugar because as soon as her symptoms come back, she wonders: why am I putting myself through this?

Not eating sugar has become part of Sandhya's identity. She says: "I feel so much more free because I'm creating the identity I want around sugar. "
