Why do you like karate? That's a question nearly every karate practitioner has been asked multiple times. I have been asked that question multiple times and I have given multiple answers. Well on one such occasion I gave an answer that was terrible and it's haunted me for four years. So I'd like to take the time to give a better answer than I did those four years ago in room full of well known and well respected karate masters.
I really appreciate hearing from the Okinawa Karate Podcast listeners as well. I try to provide you some value in this podcast and please know that I greatly value the feedback I get from you. So why do you like karate? If you care to share your response with me I'd be more than happy to read it. Send to: [email protected]
As always, thank you for listing to the Okinawa Karate Podcast!

I am a white belt again and dang it feels good. In April 2022 I joined a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu dojo here on Okinawa so I thought I would begin sharing some of these experiences with the OKP Family.
Please let me know your own experiences branching out of karate and trying a new discipline. Or maybe you are coming to karate from another discipline. I'd really like to hear from you regarding your experiences.
As always, thank you for supporting the Okinawa Karate Podcast.

It's been a minute, er um more like one year, since I recorded an audio only episode of the Okinawa Karate Podcast. I may have taken a long hiatus but I am back.
A sincere thank you to those that have stuck around and checked in on me by asking "when is the next episode?" Well here it is. Just a short recording to remind you that I am still here in the Birthplace of Karate and still hosting the only Karate podcast from the Birthplace of Karate, Okinawa Japan.
Thanks again for all of the support.

In this episode I talk about choosing a dojo that is right for you. This episode is dedicated to "R" for asking me a question on my YouTube video with Ron Nix Sensei: https://youtu.be/8EjHt0bOspg
Trust me when I say the Sensei is way more important than the style. There's great Sensei's in every style, and sadly there's bad Sensei's too.
Shoot me a message at [email protected] and let me know how you choose the correct dojo.

Stay in your lane and FOCUS. What does this mean to me both in and out of the dojo? Well you have to listen to find out. I am curious to know what you think. Does this make any sense or is Josh off his rocker again?
Shoot me a message. Oh an if it's not too much trouble can I please ask for a review on whatever podcast app you are listening on at this time?
Thank you as always,
Josh Simmers

My Sensei's wife passed away. She was a pillar in the dojo. No need to elaborate any more than that. We all have pillars in the dojo.

I am pleased to bring you this book interview and discussion with Jason Perry Sensei as we discuss "An Old Man's Way - Doug Perry's Unlikely Journey Through Karate, War, and Life."
If you haven't already watched my first interview with Jason Perry Sensei, I suggest watching that first to get a taste of his own story and journey in the arts.
Jason Perry Sensei is a 7th Dan in Shorin-Ryu and the son of Doug Perry, 10th Dan, Shorin-Ryu.
I hope you enjoy this video and if you are interested in purchasing the book or just learning more about the author and his father you can visit the following:

I am pleased to present my video interview with Jason Perry, Shorinryu Kensankai.
Jason Perry is the son of Doug Perry, Hanshi 10th Dan, and was practically born in the dojo. He literally cannot remember his first days because they go beyond his earliest memories of growing up on Marine Corps Bases along the East Coast, often being the only child in a dojo full of Marines, Soldiers and Sailors.
He has nearly four full decades of martial arts training, he is a pure gentleman, and a Sensei in the truest sense.

Welcome back to the interview series with Michael Hagen Sensei. This is Part 2 of the series and in this episode, we get to listen to Michael describe his rise to a National Team Kata Champion and his competition in the WKF. Although by listening to Michael talk you would never know he is a multi-time Team USA National Champion. He definitely maintains the humble attitude of a beginner’s mind.
Please enjoy Part 2 with Michael Hagen, Sensei.

This is episode one of a three-episode series with Michael Hagen, Sensei. Michel began his martial arts training in Taekwon Do in his home state of Alaska. In his university days he was able to travel to Japan and he of course kept training. This was his introduction to Shito-Ryu. Many years later he hasn’t looked back.
Please enjoy Part 1 with Michael Hagen, Sensei and as always thank you very much for tuning in to the Okinawa Karate Podcast.

This is Part 2 with Pat McGale Sensei. Previously in Part 1 we learned about his training in Okinawa Kenpo beginning at age 5 until he left the island of Okinawa at age 23.
In Part 2 we learn about getting kicked out of a TKD Studio, for a side kick no less, and his 10+ years in WuShu.
Webpage of Pat Sensei's WuShu Coach, Richard Branden.
Sadly Richard passed away in 2013 due to Pancreatic Cancer.
Our thoughts and prayers to his family, his students and everyone he touched positively through the martial arts.

Pat McGale started training at the age of five with Master Odo Seikichi of Okinawa Kenpo. By age seven he had already cut himself badly with kama, by age 13 he was competing in the black belt division in karate and kobudo tournaments and bringing home hardware.
Five decades later he is still training and teaching Okinawa Karate.
In Episode 1 with Pat Sensei we learn about his time in Okinawa Kenpo from age 5 to 23.

This is my first long distance video, as you can tell when it cuts off mid-stream. But with crazy times comes crazy videos. Get out there and train on tour own. Coronavirus sucks!
This interview is with my good friend Richard Canton of Canton Martial Arts.
https://www.cantonmartialarts.org.uk/
Richard is a kick ass fighter, and a well rounded martial artist that doesn't keep his passion or emotions hidden. I recommend you meet and train with him in person for the full effect.

A very special thank you to Ron Nix Sensei, Miss Akemi Nix and Brandon Nix for taking time for this interview.
This interview was filmed at the Nix Family Dojo in January 2020.

Please standby for that footage from OkiLife. After recording this interview, I learned they were able to salvage most of the footage from our October 2019 visit.

This #OKP interview is with the amazingly talented Jonathan Seavey of the Shobukan Goju-Ryu Dojo.
Jonathan got his start in Tang So Doo (in my hometown of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania) and after moving around a bit he found his belonging in a traditional Goju-Ryu Dojo.
Take a listen to his journey and please follow his Instagram and Dojo Homepage for updated information. Jonathan is on fire
