  • On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Jo Preston Hart. Jo grew up in south east London , with her mum and younger sister. Her dad was an alcoholic . She started drinking in pubs when she was 15 and by the time she was 18 she was a regular binge drinker constantly drinking to black out. She drank heavily at weekends through her 30s and 40s and really struggled to shake off that party girl image . Aged 50 she went through a divorce and her drinking took a dark path and was drinking home alone and suffering with drinking injuries as result of this. She found the sober community on Instagram and joined sober Dave’s Dry January group and has not looked back . Despite a blip near her one year mark she is committed to a lifetime of sobriety and look forward to the future . Life isn’t perfect but it’s much better sober .

  • On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Melissa McGovern. She is a wife, Mother and most importantly a proud sober New Yorker. As a grey area drinker, who could never moderate, she found her drinking habits escalating after some deep personal losses. As the pandemic rolled on so did her drinking. At a routine doctors visit, her blood tests revealed some staggering results. She was advised to make “drastic behavioural changes” or be prescribed a slew of medications to combat her health issues. She chose to make those changes and completely turn her life around. Today she thrives as an alcohol free woman, coach and podcaster.

  • On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Phil Briggs who is a 54 year old make-up artist living in London who stopped drinking alcohol in April 2024. Phil was born and raised in Liverpool during the 70s and 80s and moved to live amongst the bright lights of London when he was 21 years old. Phil, like many, discovered alcohol at a young age of 15 and it soon became part of all social life both in Liverpool and following the move to London. He remembers being frequently drunk from the age of 16 when he left school and began working for a large bank. Socialising with the Liverpool banking colleagues whilst at the same time regularly having nights out on Liverpool’s gay scene, alcohol featured heavily several times per week. This continued following the move to London with new banking colleagues and a busy London gay nightlife. Social drinking continued for many years and in his 30s, Phil found drinking wine with meals indoors became an additional regular time to imbibe. In 2012, Phil was hit with a series of life-changing events including job loss, divorce, financial difficulties and bereavement. While not directly responsible for these incidents, alcohol, which had previously been reserved for socialising and enjoying with a meal, became the go to coping mechanism for difficult life events. By the time the pandemic hit in 2020, Phil was already drinking every night in increasing amounts and being alone during the pandemic it escalated to whole new levels of drinking. When a very close friend of 30 years died of Covid, Phil found dealing with the grief without being able to see anyone else, cemented very heavy, nightly drinking in place. Phil knew something had to change and after months of procrastination decided on a three month break from alcohol which turned into a realisation that the only option for him was to stop completely. It hasn’t been a simple path, with extra health problems coming to the surface and dealing with living alone where most of the heavy drinking had taken place. But research on the subject and connection with others going through the same has enabled Phil to remain alcohol free.  Phil now uses his make-up skills to help those with skin conditions which cause them a loss of confidence, to use specialist skin creams to cover the conditions. Now, more than six months alcohol free, he is beginning to notice subtle but vital changes in his life and for the first time in many years is very excited about the future and finding out what he is capable of.

  • After a long break we are finally back with a new season of One For The Road, Join me to kick off this latest season with Simon Maguire.

Simon’s journey with alcohol started on the day of his mother’s passing as a 15-year-old boy. Drawn to alcohol, food and later codeine Simon built up a series of addictive habits as a coping mechanism in all areas of his life. By the time he had reached 39 he weighed 22 stone on the scales and had a growing list of health problems. Struck by a passing comment from a colleague Simon knew he had to make a change for the sake of his family and his self-worth. Simon’s journey from this day to 2 years later saw him lose 9 stone, kick the addictions, and complete multiple Ironman events for charity. Recognising he was inspiring those around him, Simon has gone on to be a keynote speaker and aspiring author. Delivering his talk on how to reach for your goals and complete them, Simon is now empowering people across the UK.

  • Im joined on One For The Road this week by Barbara Williams who ditched alcohol in February 2021.

She grew up in the UK in the university city of Cambridge, with her parents and four sisters. Remembering that alcohol was mostly used happily at family celebrations. Barbara remembers thinking ‘I can’t wait to go out, like my older sisters’, who were going out at the weekends dancing enjoying themselves. The first time she was drunk was at 14 years old, throwing up in the street, blacking out and feeling embarrassed, being out of control drunk was not part of her teens after that incident.  She recalls going to pubs in the 80s without ID ordering a malibu and coke and cycling to the pub every Friday with friends for the pub disco. After becoming a young mum shifting Barbara’s priorities meant that alcohol wasn’t prevalent during the rest of her teens. Barbara found the rave scene in the 90s, followed by noughties ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Ladette’ culture where her drinking consumption increased from going out at the weekend binge drink to drinking at home during the week. Barbara sprinkles sober inspiration sharing her colourful posts and stories on IG @sober_in_colour

She is soon to be launching a Facebook group exclusive to women of colour www.facebook.com/groups/soberincolour

  • This week on One For The Road i am joined by Andy Stone. After an early ADHD diagnosis in his teens Andy struggled greatly through 2 school expulsions and thus had an early introduction to drugs and alcohol. Through his 20’s and early 30’s unable to hold down a long-term job or to succeed in the classroom the shame

of failure and the guilt of under achieving caused prolonged bouts of victim mindset and poor mental health. Being unable to cope Andy sought help from both private and NHS mental health workers and was prescribed Ritalin, Valium and SSRI’s in conjunction with an ever increasing drinking tolerance and cocaine habit. Until, at the age of 34, Andy’s health reached the point that serious steps needed to be taken! Once through residential rehab and into the fellowships of AA, NA and OA Andy was then able to make a drastic recovery! On his new trajectory not only has Andy been able to educate himself as to the reasons why his neurodiversity caused him to become addicted to drugs and alcohol, but to utilize that same condition to propel him into the record books. Andy has elevated his health and fitness to the level of setting a Guinness World Record in endurance triathlons, swim with 23 species of shark without a cage and he now training to swim the English Channel later this year with plans to go on and become the first person to ‘officially’ swim the Atlantic! With a documentary of his story due out later this year, a budding career in pro speaking and mentoring neurodiverse teens in alternative education Andy is out help others to educate themselves so as no to fall into the same traps he did.

  • This week i am joined on One For The Road by Allie Bailey who is an ultrarunner, coach, speaker and podcaster who has run in some of the most extreme places in the world. In 2024 she released her first book “There is No Wall”, a brutally honest, sometimes shocking account of alcoholism, depression and severe mental breakdowns that almost cost her her life. She would like it to be known that despite this doom worthy introduction, she is “super good fun.” Allie tends to swear quite a lot. Allie was the first woman to run 100 miles across frozen Lake Khövsgöl in Mongolia and to run the full length of the Panama Canal. She has crossed the inhospitable Namib Desert three times, run the length of the Outer Hebrides and completed a 1,000-mile off-road version of the classic Land’s End to John o’Groats route in just thirty days. Allie has finished over 200 marathons and ultramarathons all over the world, but the most remarkable thing about all of these achievements is that she accomplished most of them while battling depression and alcoholism. Although running ultimately became the vehicle that helped buy Allie the time to recover from a number of severe mental health breakdowns, it did not save her. In fact, there were times when it made her battle all the more difficult. After a seismic mental health crisis in 2021, Allie finally admitted to herself and those around her that she was an alcoholic and started her recovery. She left behind a dream career with major record labels and adventure companies and now works as a coach with a broad range of runners and endurance athletes, helping them unlock their full potential.

  • On today’s episode on One For The Road I have to issue a trigger warning as there are discussions around child abuse and suicide. My guest on todays show today is Lucy Bruce. Lucy lives in Glasgow with her two daughters and has now been sober for 18 years. Her childhood was impacted by alcohol, violence & sexual abuse and she self-medicated with alcohol throughout her teens and early twenties until suicidal thoughts and panic attacks made her seek help to get sober. Despite removing alcohol Lucy struggled with unresolved childhood trauma & suffered from obtrusive thoughts surrounding her pregnancies until years later when she experienced MDMA Therapy and has never looked back. Lucy is a single parent, has weathered divorce, co-dependent relationships and loss but still lives a life free from alcohol. She is passionate about her children and work as an Alcohol-free coach and wants to share her story with women who may be going through similar experiences to help get rid of the stigma around the issues.

  • Welcome back to One For The Road. This week i am joined by Sharon and Lauretta, an acclaimed comedy double act who have appeared in numerous TV and stage productions, developed sitcoms with comedy giants, and written plays for the West End. Sharon and Lauretta went from red wine-drinking Chinese take-out aficionados to thriving advocates of a plant-based lifestyle. Sharon's diagnosis of a rare autoimmune disease was a turning point that led them down a path of resilience, determination, and ultimately, transformation. Sharon was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease just before her son was born over 9 years ago. She was covered from head to toe in a chronic rash, and at times was wheelchair-bound. On a concoction of very toxic drugs and steroids, she decided she needed to find another way to get better. Her sister was determined to do everything she could to help Sharon. Her husband left her at six months pregnant, and she was now looking after Sharon, her daughter, and Sharon's son. As two single Mums living together with very young children, they decided they wanted to do everything to get Sharon's health back. After extensive research and a lot of trial and error, together they transitioned into a plant-based diet with lots of nutrient-dense foods, gave up alcohol and processed foods. Lauretta retrained as a natural vegan chef concentrating on nutrition. Sharon is now off all drugs, feels better than ever, and is back running. They decided they wanted to inspire others and in 2018 set up a wellness retreat, The Detox Barn followed by launching their first product, Funki Coffee, and their hugely successful podcast - The Gavin Sisters Wellness Show.

  • Thanks for tuning into this weeks epsiode of One For `The Road. This week i am joined by Matt Busbridge. Matt started drinking when he was 17 - it was something that wasn’t really of interest to him before that and he began mainly going to clubs etc and drinking maybe once a week . Drink gave him the confidence and a whole new lease of life at that age. He struggled , and still does, with confidence . He reckons it all stems from where he used to be quite a big lad and that hasn’t really left him since . Matt then started taking drugs around the age of 22 - the drug of choice was cocaine . He dabbled with others - mdma / ecstasy / ketamine and he took drugs all the way up to his 30s
it was pretty much a weekly occurrence with him; with these actions he self sabotaged relationships, but alsonused it as a form of self medicating . When living in London Matt was drinking and using around 3 days a week and he used to also do something called ‘Monday club’ where it was a case of just getting messed up after work .  Matt went through Mega lows; chromic depression and anger towards people who wanted to help whuch was very selfish Matt went sober last January, he didn’t attend AA - he mainly just listened to podcasts . Matt is doing really well now and hopes that by sharing his story it will help others to look at their relationship with drugs and alcohol.

  • Thanks for joining me for this weeks episode of One For The Road. This week i am joined by Emily Horwood. Emily grew up in the noughties, amongst the parties of the primrose hill set and the carnage of Camden Town. The drink and the drug scene was in full swing and Emily's relationship with alcohol was off and running. As the people around her started to 'grow up' and have families, Emily continued to do what she knew...searching for the next 'high,' travelling, partying and jumping from job to job. Emily's life changed when she found herself in an abusive relationship, fuelled by alcohol. After seeking help to leave, Emily found that she was now drinking to 'escape' her reality, more than ever.  Emily's story, describes the 'grey-out' years from her mid 20's - mid 30's, she talks about having children as a way to 'fix' herself, she shares her darkest times and how she finally hit her emotional rock bottom. Emily shares her story of courage and determination to change her relationship with alcohol for good. We hear how she found the support she needed, her journey into Alcoholics Anonymous, her relapse and her comeback. We talk about the value of connection, accountability, maintenance and helping others and how the Sober Community is now one of the key tools that Emily uses to change her life for the better and to support others who are considering or trying out a new sober way of life.  Emily posts daily on her instagram page, @stepping_on_the_sober_train .... She shares nuggets of wisdom and lessons she is learning along the way on her Sober 'Journey.'
