Our conversationalists for this episode are Ceridwen Owen and Jennifer Nichols. Ceridwen is an Associate Professor at the University of Tasmania and co-leads the Diverse Inclusions Lab. Jennifer is the Executive Director â Tasmanian and International Chapters of the Australian Institute of Architects.
Jennifer and Ceridwen share their experiences and perspectives on architectural education, practice and academia, emphasising the importance of learning from experiences and adapting to new challenges.
Jennifer describes her love of people, community and relationships, which has made her role at the Institute such a good fit. Ceridwen shares her early experiences growing up in Scotland and studying architecture before she took off to âthe other side of the world without a planâ. Fortunately, in Australia she found her people, she found sustainability and she found her love for academia. Our speakers share their belief in the power of architecture and design in positively impacting peopleâs lives and how this brings immense joy and fulfilment to their work.

Our conversationalists in this episode are Meghna Prasanth and Aparna Datey. Aparna is a researcher and educator at the University of Queensland and the Queensland Institute of Technology. At the time of the Salon, Meghna was an architectural graduate and working at Cox Architecture.
In this in-depth conversation, Meghna and Aparna share the joys and challenges of pursuing architecture in India and other countries, including Switzerland, the United States and Australia. They discuss the strengthening of identity and confidence found through working and living in different environments, and understanding where their interests lie. They describe the highs and lows, the thrill of working on big projects but also the fragility of the business, with opportunities won and lost on the back of economic conditions.
Aparna discusses her PhD, which draws on her fascination with the vital connection between practice and academia, and the important role casual academics play. Meghna describes an employee-led research project she worked on within Cox Architecture, exploring domesticity in relation to the modern nomad. She discusses research work in practice and the value of being able to understand something in a slower, more nuanced way. Finally, our speakers discuss the synergies of research between practice and academia, the mystery of the design process for different people, learning about how practices work, and the importance of collaboration.

Our conversationalists for this session are Georgia Lindsay and Tara Broun. Georgia is a senior lecturer in architecture at the University of Tasmania. At the time of the recording Tara was an architect at John Wardle Architects. She is now at Cumulus.
Georgia and Tara begin their conversation by discussing significant âlife movesâ. Tara spent time in Europe and Melbourne before returning to Tasmania. Georgia started with a passion for art, exploring how it affects people, and moved around the US before landing her current job at the University of Tasmania. "What are the differences in environments, cultures, and systems between Australia and the US?", Tara asks.
They then discuss kids, maternity leave and its effects on architects, and their own experiences with life balance.

This is a fascinating discussion of the potential and strategic opportunities in project management, and the career paths that took Ivana and DeâArne from architecture and interior design degrees to client organisations. DeâArne highlights her involvement in both the client and consultant sides of a project and the perspective shift required to work effectively in this context. Ivana details her current project â Factory of the Future â an opportunity for industries to tackle problems within their way of working with researchers at Flinders University.
The conversation includes reflections on the importance of relationships and communication, the transition from university to practice and the value of broad critical thinking skills.

Leonie and Michelle speak about their mirror experiences of exploring other fields of work, and how their skills have transferred across to architecture.
Wide-ranging backgrounds and skills gained from previous work include nursing that provided discipline and empathy, teaching toned oneâs listening skills and ability to articulate and review work whereas advertising and journalism taught alternative ways of operating in the industry and the importance of communication skills. They detail how their journeys in unexpected places led to their personal growth and career trajectories in architecture.
They both agree on how important it is to build relationships with clients, solve even the smallest of problems, and the architectâs innate gift of questionable presentation skills.

Hari and Justine share honest and insightful stories hitting all the important topics, including challenges of not having enough time, juggling young children and work, getting buildings out there in a new practice why being visible matters, mentoring and career progression in larger practices. The positive conclusion is that women now have more choices in relation to practice scale and that there is opportunity to be found in many different places.

Our conversationalists for this episode are Caroline Stalker and Genevieve Quinn. Genevieve is a graduate at Deicke Richards and is active with the Gabba Community Vision team.
The conversation explores advocacy and activism from different perspectives and professional positions. Caroline shares her positive experiences working on projects that have incentivised collaborative partnerships and provided strategies on how to advocate for better public realm contracts that include this. Genevieve is interested in the role of architecture in a political landscape and the conversation covers the role of good design education, concluding that by learning how to navigate strategic contexts in a collaborative forum, you can make a difference to a complex problems and create impactful design.
