  • Thomas is joined by internationally recognized speaker, author, and expert in the field of attachment theory and trauma resolution, Dr. Diane Poole Heller. They discuss Diane’s work in attachment theory, exploring how our early experiences with our caregivers affect our attachment styles, and what we can do to move into secure attachment in our relationships.

Dr. Heller views trauma as a broken connection—with ourselves, our lives, the earth, or other people—and explains how therapists and healers can co-regulate and attune with their clients’ nervous systems to create a safe environment for transforming trauma. Dr. Heller believes that we can interface with the energy of trauma in a way that doesn’t cause overwhelm, and opens us to maturation, spiritual experiences, and changes in consciousness.

She and Thomas also discuss how working collectively in a group amplifies healing, and how all therapists and healers are ultimately agents of grace.

  • Thomas shares deep insights into how we can embody the soul's wisdom and increase our capacity to be present and form a deeper alliance with life. He shares tools and practices for becoming more grounded and spacious in our daily lives, and in challenging situations, and how that gives us the courage, curiosity, and strength to turn difficulties into growth, expansion, and wisdom.

He also offers embodiment practices to help us connect our physical and emotional data streams, creating a more coherent awareness of our internal processes, and increasing our natural intuition and capacity for change.

As Thomas explains, we are all part of an interconnected world, but trauma tends to create a sense of separation. Reconnecting to the essence of life helps us develop a deeper sense of ourselves so that we can achieve greater regulation and resilience.

  • Thomas is joined by global wellbeing and wellbeing economics expert, program facilitator, and researcher, Julia Kim. They discuss how Bhutan's holistic approach to economics, deeply rooted in spiritual and cultural values, prioritizes individual and collective happiness and wellbeing over profit and expansion of capital.

Julia explains the concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) in Bhutan, contrasting it with the more conventional measure of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and how this system is more regenerative than extractive, less driven by overconsumption, and leads to better outcomes for people and the environment.

At a time of personal and collective trauma, burnout, and loss of hope, strengthening our capacity for inner wellbeing and authentic leadership is critical for enabling and inspiring wider organizational and systemic transformations.

  • Thomas is joined by filmmaker, philanthropist, and activist Abigail Disney. They discuss how Abigail’s activism has been informed by the darker aspects of the Disney company and family legacy, and how that legacy is reflective of larger problems in American society.

They also dive deep into the idea of moral injury, which arises when individuals are forced to act against their ethical values, leading to deep psychological and emotional wounds. She and Thomas explore how moral injury can result from systemic failures and the personal struggles of those in conflict zones. Abigail critiques the tendency to flatten historical figures into one-dimensional heroes or villains, arguing for a more nuanced understanding of their actions and legacies.

She and Thomas agree on the need for collective healing processes to address the toxic impacts of hyper-individualism and the collective trauma of global conflicts. Abigail stresses the importance of remaining open to uncertainty, and advocates for humility and flexibility in addressing complex societal issues, suggesting that this approach is essential for building a more understanding and peaceful society.

  • Thomas dives deep into the foundational principles of collective healing, exploring the challenges of individual healing and the profound benefits of healing from trauma within a safe and supportive group.

He shares how the intimacy and closeness of group healing spaces enable participants to be more open and present, which facilitates a coherent and resonant experience for all involved. In these settings, the healing of the individual is amplified by the attention and emotional feedback of the group, and vice versa. Thomas also explores how this concept can be scaled up, and how what he calls “collective witnessing” could be the key to integrating and healing the wounds of the past so that our societies can imagine and create a better world for the future together.

  • On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas dives deep into the foundational concept of wisdom - exploring what it takes to cultivate wisdom within ourselves, and how the individual effects of wisdom are deeply intertwined with the whole of humanity.

Thomas believes that wisdom arises when we grow and mature through difficult circumstances, integrating what we learn from these experiences and allowing ourselves to expand. Practicing presence can be challenging for many of us, but the more we integrate the past, the easier it gets.

Presence, as Thomas explains, is a beautiful gift that transcends time. And learning how to live in presence and connection with the whole of existence, the good and the bad, is how we develop wisdom.

They discuss the deep benefits of Buddhist meditation practice, and how it can enhance the benefits of traditional therapy - allowing us to go to greater depths in our healing work by teaching us how to be present with pain.

Koshin has applied these teachings through his own healing journey and in his groundbreaking program for healthcare workers that developed during the pandemic. He and Thomas explore how the relevance of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, honing in on truth #3: that we, as human beings, can actually change.

Koshin believes that by shifting from a model of self-care and self-orientation to an understanding of care that is service-oriented and inclusive of all people, we can learn to see our reality from new perspectives and find joy through more meaningful connections.
