Thereâs a question many of you are asking yourself right nowâŠ
âDo I have what it takes?â
Do you have the skills, the knowledge, the education, the support, etc. to actually start your own bookkeeping businessâŠor do you still have gaps you need to close?
Hereâs my rule of thumb: if you think you have a gap, then you do.
Even if you do have the skills, and this is just imposter syndrome whispering in your ear. Even if you know what youâre doing. Even if youâre equipped with everything you needâŠ
If you THINK you have a gap, then you do. Because when you think you have a gap, your confidence plummetsâŠand potential clients can feel that energy.
If youâre not sold on yourself, you canât sell anyone else on you, either. So if you think you have a gap, you either need to close it or prove to yourself that it isnât thereâŠand Iâve got a couple ways for you to do it.

Hi, I'm Katie Ferro, licensed CPA, mom of three, and the face behind Profits & Prosecco. Is bookkeeping as a profession becoming obsolete?
Short answer: no.
Long answer: no, because there are still far too many small errors that are easily done and easily missed when you donât know what youâre doing.

Itâs time we had a hard conversation.
One of the concerns I most commonly hear from people who are wanting to leave their corporate job and start their own bookkeeping business is about their partners. Typically, this means their husbands.
âHow do I get my husband on board?â
âMy husband just flat-out shut me downâany advice?â
âI want to pursue this, but my husband is afraid of the risk financially.â
Particularly when you are the breadwinner of the house, these concerns are validâitâs a big leap to take, and anyone would be a bit skeptical at first. But itâs not always solely about practical concernsâŠand the way to approach the conversation shifts depending on what sort of situation youâre in.

Year-end is always going to be stressful, regardless of how well you prepareâŠbut there is a difference between something being stressful and something being chaotic, and that shift can mean the difference between delivering a beautiful set of reconciled books to your client at the end of the year or handing them a messy set of books that barely got done in time for them to hand over to their CPA.

Tax season is upon us, which means itâs time to tackle a dilemma every bookkeeper will likely come across eventually: how to work with CPAs who, letâs be honest, kind of treat you like youâre dumb.

Before the year ends, I want to revisit an episode I did earlier in 2024. An episode that focused on one simple question
âWhat do you want?â
We donât stop and ask ourselves this question very often. At least, not in earnest. Not with the intention of getting to the root of what we truly desire.
Why? Who knows. Maybe because we think we arenât allowed to want things. Maybe because weâve forgotten how to dream big. Maybe because we donât believe we can do as big as we dream.
Whatever the reason is, I want you to pretend it doesnât exist for a little whileâŠand instead, I want you to do a little exercise with me.
I have a feeling your 2025 will be a lot more successful if you go into it with a clear idea of what you ACTUALLY want to accomplishâŠnot what you think is possible for you to accomplish.

Most people hear âbookkeeping certificationâ and think that earning one will automatically qualify them as a bookkeeperâŠ
And they couldnât be more wrong.
The term âbookkeeping certificationâ can be misleading; when you get certified through certain bookkeeping softwares, such as QuickBooks or Xero, youâre not getting certified in the actual JOB of bookkeepingâyouâre getting certified in the SOFTWARE.
That doesnât mean you shouldnât get certifiedâin fact, I think you probably shouldâbut thereâs more to bookkeeping than simply getting certified. (And honestly, you donât even need to be certified in anything to do the work!)
