I was practicing today at my piano, and I got frustrated when I couldn’t sing a high a from a G and octave lower.
But instead of getting too frustrated, I remembered this vocal exercise that works every time! Try it out :-)

The last day of Mary Garden.
This is a great insight into the hard work and most importantly, mindset of what it takes to be a great singer!
Talent isn't born it is created. That's not a modern invention, as you'll soon hear.

Our long dead friend, Mary Garden, talks about the coup de glotte, or 'shock of the glottis'. It's a term used in the theory of singing technique to describe a particular method of emitting or opening a note by an abrupt physical mechanism of the glottis (the space between the vocal folds).
It's a technique I used to sing with that ultimately got me into a lot of vocal trouble.
I'm with Mary on this one... avoid it.
I'm really enjoying the wisdom of these great singers from the golden age of singing!

Where should you "place" the voice?
... in the mask?
... top of the head?
... the throat?
What if I told you that doesn't matter at all if you don't have this one thing?

I have been reading the book Atomic Habits.
I've implemented a couple of the techniques from the book and it's really changed my life over the past few weeks.
I wanted to drop a note about some of the techniques I use to build in better habits.
1. Set a date and time for the habit you want (ie. At 8:00a I will practice my scales)
2. Habit stacking. (ie. after my scales I will study a language, then I will do 5 minutes of yoga)
3. Set a timer! Want to practice for 25 minutes? Don't eyeball it. Set a timer and sit down (or stand up) and work!
Let's build some great habits together so that we can all become better singers and make singing every day a habit!

I stumbled across this easy technique for finding good posture from Great Singers on the Art of Singing... Check it out!
1. Stand on the balls of your feet, heels just touching the floor.
2. Hold your arms at your side in a relaxed condition.
3. Move your arms forward until they form an angle of forty-five degrees with the body. Press the palms down until the chest is up comfortably.
4. Now let your arms drop back without letting your chest fall. Feel a sense of ease and freedom over the whole body. Breath naturally and deeply.
I tried this and I think it could be super helpful!!

Who's Charles Dalmores?
I had no idea before this morning! He was a huge deal during the turn of the century.
And he actually has a very unique path that I won't get much into here.
He struggled against all odds to become a great opera singer and he is passionate that we all work our butts off the way he did!
Have a listen.

And Happy 4th of July!

I had an amazing night the other night with my friend, neighbor and life coach, Christian.
He helped me put some things into perspective during this difficult covid time...
I think you'll like this story about me remembering my "why?" and I hope it helps you remember yours too!
Because right now, we all need it!

Entanglement is a weird part of singing that I don't think gets addressed enough.
It's basically muscles that get entangled in other muscles that eventually stop you from singing freely...
It goes deeper than that still... not just muscles but emotions.

I take an excerpt from the famous book "Great singers on the Art of Singing."
This section really struck my hard this morning as it helped me give myself a break from being a perfectionist.
Trying to sing perfectly might not be the perfect solution to having a singing career! Who knew?!

This episode comes off of the excitement of me (finally) publishing my book!!
It's out on kindle and soon to be paperback. Go download it, it's called "How to get high: The key to freeing yourself from vocal prison and making singing high notes easy again."
I go over a chapter about loving your voice and not only how important that is for your mental health, but your vocal technique. Enjoy.

Somebody recently brought up the pomodoro technique to me when talking about practicing. I've used this technique before, but only when writing my book. I have never used it for practicing voice. So I dive into what it is and how I can help you become a better singer.
