  • In this episode, we delve into the concept of Ahimsa, or non-violence—the first of the Yamas in yoga’s ethical framework. Darlene Ouimet and Jill explore their personal journeys with this principle, discussing how Ahimsa shapes their daily lives and relationships. The Yamas and Niyamas, the foundational guidelines in yoga’s Eight Limbs, offer a path to living in harmony with ourselves and others. These ethical principles teach us how to cultivate non-violence, truth, and integrity, setting the stage for a loving relationship with ourselves that extends into the world.

Jill also introduces Sister Science’s Year of EXPANSION, a 40-week course inspired by Deborah Adele's The Yama & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Principles. In weekly, small-group calls, participants reflect on each principle, uncovering deeper layers of self-awareness and mutual support. This sacred space, reserved for personal transformation, is where the real work of self-witnessing happens.

Whether you're new to yoga's ethical teachings or seeking to deepen your practice, listen in as we explore Ahimsa and the powerful insights it brings to living a balanced, non-violent life.

  • In this episode of Sister Science Stories, Jill interviews Hayley Oshanek, the new(ish) co-owner of Alchemy Yoga. Their conversation, sparked outside a coffee shop, delves into Hayley’s unique approach to using yoga as a tool to help people connect with their inner power. Jill's gentle, therapeutic approach to yoga, is contrasted by this empowering philosophy and it just goes to show, there is a entry point into Yoga for everyone.

Hayley has been in the fitness industry for 20 years. While yoga was initially part of her physical fitness routine—mainly to prevent injuries and stretch after intense marathon and Ironman triathlon training—it quickly transformed into a way of life. Ten years ago, her running shoes and road bike took a back seat to her yoga mat. Yoga became a powerful vehicle for self-discovery and a deeper connection to the world around her, shifting her entire perspective on well-being.

Today, Hayley believes in yoga’s ability to quiet the mind, foster contentment, embrace truth, and open the heart to greater peace. This belief is now central to her work.

As teachers, we know that what we give to others often heals us as well. At Alchemy Yoga, Hayley taps into this wisdom, helping her students connect with their personal power on the mat, where they can truly feel that strength within.

You can also find Hayley running her other business, Frilly Lilly, here in Cochrane, AB.

  • You know when someone else says the same thing you do, but somehow they say it better? That's always how I feel when Hannah and I sit down to talk.

Hannah Elizabeth Levin is the founder of Heartfelt Wellbeing in Virginia. She is an Ayurveda Practitioner, yoga teacher, and artist, who also holds a master's degree in teaching. Her mission is to alleviate unnecessary suffering in the world. Hannah expertly guides women to regain their optimal health and wellbeing through her online coaching programs and retreats.

The conversation Hannah and I have today revolves around VATA, a term used to describe a set of qualities that can define a person's constitution, the climate during the winter season, and even the stage of life post-menopause. VATA embodies air and ether qualities; they govern movement, and when they become aggravated, we feel specific impacts.

    Today, we:

The qualities of VataHow Vata manifests in a personWhat symptoms indicate that Vata is aggravating youVata's effects on appetite, digestion, and eliminationVata's impact on circulation, body temperature, and drynessWhat diseases are considered VataKey remedies to pacify these symptoms when they bother you.

Through embracing the intention to 'be a blessing' in every situation, Laureen reflects on how this shift has transformed her life, improving her physical health and well-being. • In this episode of Sister Science Stories, Jill interviews Chelsey Beda. Our conversation highlights that sometimes you need to take big radical action to enact the kind of change that heals you. From reconstructing her marriage to hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, Chelsey did not tippy toe her way to the life she wanted, she blew it the old one, assuming that she would have to start over. Instead she found speaking her truth was not a bomb but a balm, enabling her to reconnect to love in the life she had, and use that to build the life she has now. This powerhouse is on the other side, looking back with no regrets as she shows us all how healing can happen.

  • In this episode of Sister Science Stories, Jill Novak interviews Erin McWhirter. In August of 2018 Erin had a brain hemorrhage while making supper. Two months in the hospital started Erin on the path to her new normal. One year earlier Erin had completed her yoga teacher training at a two week intensive training where I was by far the oldest person.  She fell in love with yoga philosophy, even more than the physical asana practice.  The practices Yoga taught her became the path that led her healing, and cope with this new version of herself.

  • In order to share what Sister Science is, Jill asked Chelsey Beda to interview her. Together we answer the questions:

    What is Sister Science?

How can we hold Sister Science in the same regard as our equal opposite Mr. Science. The linear, masculine, currently taxed energy system, that is held in high regard, needs the softness and flow of the Yin, Feminine energy that can help hold it together. How healing works on the Sister Science side of things compared to the Mr. Science side of things.See how Sister Science is for Men too.Understand how Jill relies on Yoga and Ayurveda together for this way of getting YOU in touch with YOUR needs, choices, and intuitive healing. In situations where logic and intuition conflict, we feel which one to follow? Love vs Fear, Open releasing exhale vs pinched restricted breath. Your body knows what your answers are.Jill tells her healing journey story and how you can connect to yours.

Thank you to Chelsey Beda for being our interviewer today. Hear Chelsey's own powerful healing story in an upcoming episode. It is a must listen.
