Ohhhhhh… have I got a treat for you!
Have you ever wanted to pick the brain of a homeschool dad and husband? (Maybe even your husband!) Like really get into his mind and see what he’s thinking???
Could be a little scary right?! Like you WANT to peek inside, but you’re bracing yourself for what you might find…
Let me introduce you to Todd Wilson. He’s a husband, homeschool dad and granddad. Todd is also an author and speaker, the founder of Familyman Ministries, and the voice behind The Smiling Homeschooler podcast.
I met Todd when he spoke at a homeschool convention. (As the keynote speaker, I might add! Don’t let his humbleness fool you. This guy knows his stuff!) He’s SO down to earth, genuine and FUNNY.
Todd was gracious enough to join me on the podcast to tell the unfiltered truth about what it’s like being the husband of a homeschooling mom. Trust me when I say… he holds nothing back and he answers every question I throw his way with authenticity and Christ-like love.
We’re digging into the hard stuff, like…
The #1 thing that seems to drive a wedge in marriages What drives your husband crazy (in a not-so-good-way) What drives your husband crazy (in a good way!) How you can be more intentional with your marriage What your husband REALLY needs from youIt’s a pretty juicy and tell-all episode for all the homeschooling moms and wives out there! Don’t miss it!

A mentor once told me, “Pay attention to what everyone else is doing, and do the opposite.”
In other words…. Be the weirdo.
Parenting tip -> Share this insight with your kids. I did.
In a culture where kids feel more comfortable following the crowd and blending in (regardless of what consequences it may lead to), my kids are choosing to live a life that is set apart. They are different than most kids their age.
It takes courage to go against the norm, and to stand strong when others roll their eyes or make fun of what they think is strange and unusual….
But my kids know the reward is great. The payoff of being “weird” is worth it.
Join me on the podcast today, as I share 7 ways that my kids are weird in the eyes of the world, and why I’m perfectly okay with it.

I never thought I would do this….
But I did. And I’m GLAD I did.
I took the time to read a *gasp* fiction/fantasy novel. It’s actually a big deal. Why?
Because I’m a list making, box checking, type A, “don’t do it if it might be a waste of time” kind of mom.
But when my 16 year old daughter suggested a summer book swap challenge, I knew I should say yes, even though it was going to require me to sit down and chill for HOURS….
The basis for the challenge was simple:
She would choose a book for me to read (her favorite book, “The Goose Girl”) and I would choose a book for her to read (a personal growth book called “The Greatest Miracle in the World”). We had to read the books completely and finish before the end of summer.
We agreed to the terms and in July, I reluctantly sat down to read the first fiction book I’d held in my hands in years…. Maybe even decades…
What happened in the days that followed shocked me.
But like a good book, I won’t give it all away here. You’ll have to hit play on today’s podcast to get the rest of the story….

As a parent, I totally understand how it feels to battle the “screen monster” and to worry about the content that’s being placed in front of our kids. Thankfully, Minno offers some wonderful solutions!
Founded by a Dad, Minno is closing in on a decade of providing quality Christian content to kids and families. This streaming service is available as an app and it’s well worth the (small) monthly fee.
Jessica Wolstenholm is the Vice-President of Education and Publishing at Minno, and she’s joining me on the podcast to share how the platform can serve families, both online and off-line.
Jessica is also sharing some key take-aways about why it’s so important that kids see the Christian faith represented in kids’ entertainment, as well as insight about the “2-14 window” and how it can impact a child’s decision for faith.
If you’re looking for GOOD entertainment and shows for your kids, (both animated and live-action) you’ll want to catch this episode and learn more about Minno!

Remember when…
“Screen time” wasn’t even really a thing…
“Online” didn’t seem like such a scary place…
Social media felt more social than lonely…
I’m guessing all of that was back before you were a parent, right?
Raising up kids today can feel like a constant battle between giving them a screen so you can sneak in a shower and instantly feeling the pang of guilt and worry as their eyes lock in on the device you just handed them.
David Tucker joins me on the podcast today and gets right to the point, as he answers all the hard questions I’m throwing his way…
“How much is too much screen time?”
“At what age should we allow our kids to have social media?”
“How can we course correct if our kids are already addicted to screens?”
It’s an eye opening episode to say the least, as David shares some shocking facts, plus encouraging, tangible advice for how we can parent well in today’s digital world.

Jennifer’s child grew up to become a wonderful learner and she recently graduated college!
Jennifer joins me on the podcast today to share more about her family’s story, as well as tips for how to spot learning differences and some wonderful resources that will support parents and children who may be navigating things like ADHD, dyslexia, and dysgraphia.

Story time! (How fitting for today’s topic of language skills and literature?)
It was the very first day of our homeschooling journey. The kids and I cracked open the Language Arts curriculum I’d chosen… I hadn’t thought to pre-screen the material (rookie mistake) and I began to read the instructions out loud: “Circle all the prepositions.”
Horrified, my kids and I stared at each other blankly and we all wanted to cry. “A prepo-what???”
I had pulled my kids out of public school, and coming from public school myself, none of us knew what in the world a preposition was.
I was the mom. I was the teacher. I was supposed to be leading this whole thing and I didn’t even know what a preposition was!? I felt like a failure and I quickly realized that curriculum was NOT going to work for us.
I began desperately searching for an effective way to teach my kids language skills. Although my kids are quick learners, I knew this process was going to take divine intervention, because grammar seemed difficult to understand, and to teach. No one was inspired to write, nor did we have any kind of a system in place for learning how to do it well.
Enter the unsung hero: Mr. Andrew Pudewa, founder of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW).
Mr. Pudewa had a system in place (“Structure and Style for Students”) that included easy-to-use videos, pre-selected source texts and key word outlines. On top of that, his charming personality stole the hearts of my kids and if I’m being honest, it stole my heart too.
Mr. Pudewa’s method for helping homeschool families thrive was unlike anything I’d seen before. My kids became strong, inspired writers (and grammar wizards). Most importantly though, they fell in love with reading and writing and thinking.
When I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Pudewa in person, I quickly realized how authentic, engaging and witty he was. I invited him to join me on the podcast and he graciously agreed to share his time and expertise.
So, today you are in for an absolute treat! You can head to the podcast now to take in a conversation that is full of tips to help you cultivate language skills in your homeschool. Mr. Pudewa is sharing book recommendations, encouragement for homeschooling moms, one of his famous jokes and so much more!
Trust me when I say… this is a don’t miss episode! Enjoy!

Ahhhh… The expectations. The checklists. The household chores. Your kids education?!
Somehow we’re overwhelmed just thinking about all the things that we are supposed to be doing well. And somehow, well…. It feels hard. Like we can’t possibly keep up with it all.
What if it didn’t have to be so hard?
Guess what, mom?
…Homeschooling doesn’t have to be hard!
My sister, Dori Colborn (mom of 4) joins me (mom of 3) on the podcast today for a discussion about how to simplify your homeschool. Trust me, with 7 kids in the mix, we’ve found a few tactics for getting things done and making things work. There are only so many hours in the day, right?! Necessity is the mother of invention!
The key to making this happen? Find ways to “let it be easy.”
Dori and I are about to help you simplify your homeschool, as you learn how to turn ordinary, every day events into learning opportunities. (It’s easier than you think!)
Press play, mama. This conversation can’t wait another minute!

I did a thing.
I invited my three kids onto the podcast to talk openly and honestly about their thoughts on homeschooling. Nothing was pre-scripted and I didn’t even tell them the questions I would be asking. I wanted them to share off the cuff, and from their hearts.
They didn’t hold back and a few of their answers even surprised me (in a good way)!
So often, we hear the mom’s take on homeschooling, but it’s a whole different thing to hear it from the perspective of the kids being homeschooled.
Join us for the conversation, as the kids answer questions like…
What’s been your favorite thing about homeschooling? What has surprised you? What’s been most challenging for you? How have your family relationships changed? Would you ever go back to public school? What are you most looking forward to in the years to come? It’s a tell-all episode on the Joy at Home podcast!
