Why does our food have such a confusing mix of “Best Before ..” “Use By …” and “Sell By …” labeling??!! It’s confusing and maddening, and the USDA says we toss 133 billion pounds of edible food each year due to confusion over date labeling. There has to be a better way! Well, we certainly don’t figure it out on this episode, but we can joke about it! Join us for a shallow dive into food labeling, a spirited game of “Dead or Alive”, and a frank discussion of what to do with grandma’s ashes.

Halloween is here and we chat all things spooky. We review some of the best and worst treats ever made, and Baker shares a trick for keeping your jack-o-lantern from decaying before the big day.

We're back from Minneapolis and we've had a minute to process our experience at HomeDadCon. To help with our recap we reached out to Chris Brandenburg, current VP of the National At-Home Dad Network and Chairperson for the HomeDadCon event. We discuss this year's Con and the overall mission of the Network, address the dangers of drinking on an empty stomach, and try to get Chris to dish about next year's event. Spoiler alert: he's currently tight lipped about the location but promised to give us the scoop when the city is chosen!

We lugged our podcasting gear halfway across the country, and we only managed to do one episode! Well, we were just having too much fun hanging out with fellow SAHDs and enjoying some of the local color here in Minneapolis. This here is a quick recap of the goodness of HDC24 with The Kyles. In short, it was awesome and we all can't wait for next year.

We threw some clean underwear in a bag, along with a bunch of podcast gear, and booked a bitchin' minivan rental. We are ready for HomeDadCon! Can't wait to meet everyone we've connected with online and hear from the panel of amazing presenters scheduled to appear. AND go to Elko Speedway for some dirt track shenanigans on Saturday night. We are planning on posting daily recaps so look out for new content all weekend long!
If you can't come to Minneapolis, you can register for live stream access. Do that here: https://www.homedadcon.org/

How many happy divorces do you know about? We’re guessing not a lot. When our guest Ben Heldfond and his wife called it quits they wanted to buck the trend but there weren’t a lot of positive examples out there to follow. So, once Ben and his ex Nikki figured things out they decided to share their story. Their book Our Happy Divorce launches this month and Ben sat down with us to share how he and Nikki did it. It’s an inspirational story of what happens when two people put their child above everything else. Do you know someone who needs to hear this?

We’re back from a quick summer break with evolutionary anthropologist Dr. Anna Machin who explains exactly how fathers saved the human race. No, seriously folks! Our wide-ranging conversation is a must for all parents, especially dads who don’t always get the parenting props they deserve. Discover how mom-as-nurturer and dad-as-hunter/gatherer is a Western construct without basis in evolution. Learn how dads naturally teach resilience. And find out how having a baby changes our brains to make us better parents! Please note that Dr. Machin will be speaking at HomeDadCon 2019—don’t miss her in Minneapolis! www.annamachin.com

Where has the show been lately?! Well, we got wrapped up in the swells of summertime funtime. But no need to fear, we will be back in early September with the much anticipated interview of Dr. Anna Machin–who will be speaking at Home Dad Con in Minneapolis later in September. We will be there with two At Home Dad Show fans/guests both named Kyle! It's going to be a blast so we hope to see you there. And bring a Kyle if ya know one.

Soooo we may have to change the name of the show now that we've decided that "Full-Time Dad" is an awesome way to describe what we do. Or not. In any case, on today's show we are back #InTheTrenches with Kyle Thompson a fellow Minnesotan who has a mohawk, is into short track racing, and is an incredibly patient and kind parent to his 3-year-old girl. He's beautifully in tune with his toddler, madly in love with his wife, and makes some mean Deer Camp Eggs. Come meet Kyle!

Schoooool's out for the summer! And that means it's time for the kids to head to summer camp ... or is it? Adam is feeling a little guilty that he's dropping the kids at camp (and paying for it) when they could totally stay at home with him. He got some great feedback from fellow SAHDs on Facebook which we read through. Plus Baker shares a great article on how to combat your kids' camp anxiety.

It’s our first official After Hours show! (No, we’re not counting most of Season 1...) Tonight, we sit down with our good buddy Matt Osborn and a bottle of The Ocho. Matt hiked the entire John Muir Trail with nothing but the pack on his back, a song in his heart, and presumably some bear spray. Whether you’re a seasoned backpacker or your idea of the Great Outdoors is drinking on a porch, it’s a great story so pop in and take a listen. We got blisters on our feet just hearing about it.

Father’s Day is upon us and today we sit down to discuss how best to celebrate Dad. Coffee and donuts in bed? Yes please. Chilling in a lawn chair on the beach? Absolutely. A big cup of shut the hell up? Hmmm … questionable. Find out what Adam’s perfect day looks like—down to the minute. Hear two stories about the kids that made these dads ridiculously proud. And that’s truly the best Fathers Day gift we can imagine. Whether you want to hang with the fam or be left alone—we want to know what YOUR perfect Fathers Day looks like. Email or tweet us!

Don Miggs is about as multi-talented as they come, and we’re excited to sit down with him to discuss his new book “Dads Know Best” (http://dadsknowbest.com/) which is a no bull, no punches pulled welcome to parenthood written along with his friend and bandmate John Luzzi. Miggs has so many nuggets of GREAT advice, all parents and parents-to-be need to gather round and listen to this electrifying hour. A few minutes in Miggs explains, “Mostly you’re white-knuckling it,” which pretty much sums up the early phases of parenthood. Also, pooping in the shower, dining with supermodels, and the “Lightning Round” with questions like “What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever told your kids?”

Today’s guest is a board member at the National At-Home Dad Network, ringleader of the Cincinnati Dads Group, host of a Fathers Eve celebration, and creator of the Nomadad Podcast (thenomadad.com). Does he even have time to be a dad?? Kidding aside, we love Brock’s commitment to community building and he shares with us the steps he’s taken to bring dads together in his city and beyond. And YES we’re finally joining that SAHD group on Meetup.com.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’m pretty drunk but my Lyft driver can’t tell,” well you are wrong, Buster. We know that now because our guest Kyle is a Lyft driver and he can TOTALLY tell. Adam caught a ride with him recently and, wouldn’t you know it, they figured out they were both SAHDs! So, we brought him on the show to ask our burning questions about being a Lyft/Uber driver. And about crappy beer. And about how hard Army basic training is. So hop on board the Lyft train and find out the answers!

As Baker always says: “Never the same road twice!” Adam “Can’t Leave Well Enough Alone” Gershon decided he needed an RV upgrade, and found his dream coach in Boise, Idaho (pronounced BOY-see). So they hopped on a plane and drove it all the way home. Immediately the RV is beset with electrical gremlins testing their ingenuity. Boredom takes hold somewhere in northern Nevada. And they try to kill the new RV with a brutal jaunt through Death Valley. Come along for the ride!

Most of us get nine months to prepare for our first child. What if you only had three hours??! Our guest Jason Daley Kennedy (http://www.thedaleykennedy.com/) shares his incredible experiences with foster care and adoption, and all we can say is OMG. Along with his husband, their story is jaw-dropping, heart-wrenching, and ultimately inspiring. Don't miss this one. Plus: Meditation for A-holes, mental hurdles, and being a barnacle on the ship of society. Ahoy matey! Also please visit https://www.fostermore.org.

The boys are back from Spring Break! It’s just Adam and Baker today rapping about their recent getaways, as well as the best place to clip your toenails, the best way to cook bacon, and the best place to die while taking a selfie. There’s a little something for everyone in this episode so sit back, spark a fresh pot of coffee, and enjoy!

Another show, another story from deep #InTheTrenches! This week we get a peek into the life of full-time SAHD Patrick LaPage who is raising an 11mo baby girl somewhere in Tennessee. We don’t know exactly where in Tennessee and Patrick can’t tell us because his wife is ACTUALLY a secret government agent. Uh oh—hopefully we didn’t just spill too much information. If you never hear from us again assume we are in a secret prison somewhere in North Dakota. Send help. And tequila. Patrick explains why he ended up staying home, how he’s struggled being away from family and friends, why he’s sworn off social media altogether. Enjoy the show!
