On Friday, 16th September 2022, the Kano state Police Command arrested a Chinese National, Geng Quarong, for allegedly stabbing Ummukulsum Sani Buhari to death in her family home for refusing to marry him. In this episode, we review the phases of obsessive love and how it can turn into violence. Oftentimes, there are red flags which we tend to ignore.

Two weeks ago, INEC tweeted that 45% of voter registrations, thatβs over 1.1 million, which happened within a 6 month period were invalid and would not be included in the voter register for the upcoming general election. Twitter went crazy, everyoneβs conspiracy theory antennae went up, and INEC has been on the defensive ever since.
In this episode, we will try to break down for you how itβs possible to have invalid registrations and why the 45% number is actually consistent with what INEC has reported in the past.

Itβs no secret that in Nigeria, electoral offences happen. Thereβs vote buying, ballot box snatching, bribing of INEC officials, disorderly behavior at a political meeting, illegal voting, threatening a person with violenceβ¦these and so much more have been defined as election offenses in our laws and they come with penalties.
Last month, as part of a public hearing on the Bill for an Act to Establish the Electoral Offences Commission 2022 and other related matters, INEC made their case for why we need a separate commission to investigate, arrest, and prosecute election offenders.
We analyze the bill and identify significant gaps that may make the bill ineffective at best, or at worst, a political tool.

In August 2018, 13-year-old Ochanya was interviewed on camera by journalists and she alleged that she was repeatedly raped by her uncle, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor Ogbuja. Ochanya was diagnosed with Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and on Wednesday, the 17th of October 2018, she died. Before she died, Ochanya was leaking urine and feces as a result of damage she suffered to her vagina and rectum allegedly at the hands of her cousin Victor Ogbuja and his father, Andrew Ogbuja. Fast forward to April, 2022 and Ochanyaβs uncle, Andrew Ogbuja, was acquitted by the State High Court in Makurdi. The court ruled that there was no sufficient corroborating evidence to convict him and that Ochanya was not present to tell her story. Why didnβt Ochanyaβs videotaped interview with the journalists count? What kind of corroborating evidence does the court need for a rape allegation? Does the accused person have to be caught in the act? Do they have to be subjected to a medical examination? What if they confess - does that count as corroborating evidence? In this episode, we try to find out. Special thank you to John Ameh Ogbanje and Barrister Amina Umar Hussain who took time to speak to us. βββββββββββββββ This episode was produced by Anthonieta Kalunta, Uche Mbah, Dominic Tabakaji and Sam Tabakaji. Itβs okay to discipline children but maybe itβs time to rethink how we do it in Nigeria and across Africa. In this episode we talk about how our tolerance for domestic abuse later as adults can actually be set by how we are disciplined in our childhood.
Imagine this.
Your child does something wrong. So you beat her because youβve decided this is the only way she will learn. Then after all the tears are shed, you tell her that you did it because you love her. And maybe you even feel a little bad about the beating and youβre extra nice to her afterwards and sheβs extra obedient afterwards.
Fastfoward to your child as an adult. Sheβs in a relationship and one day the man gets angry and beats her. Then after all the tears are shed, he tells her that he did it because she did something wrong but that he loves her and heβs sorry. Then heβs extra nice to her afterwards and she loves him even more. And she stays. Until one day she has had enough and she leaves or he kills her.
Special thank you to Dr. Seun Ogunla, Dr. Jackie Ikeotuonye, Mr. Olatosimi Kolawole, Madam Edoamaowo Udeme and all the domestic violence survivors who took the time to speak with us. If you or someone you love is in a domestic violence situation, there is help out there.

Politicians and political parties need money to fund campaigns. Regulating how politicians and political parties raise funds and how they spend those funds is important because If you leave it up to the politician and political parties, anything goes. In this episode, we take a closer look at our Electoral Act and we noticed that it has been diluted, watered down over the years. Our legislators appear to be introducing more grey areas into every new version of the act and these grey areas seem to help cover up information about source of funds, recipients of funds, amounts contributed, frequency of contributions and requirements to disclose information.

Political campaigns cost money and that money has to come from somewhere. At the moment, in Nigeria, the candidate is responsible for mobilizing funds and party member contributions to party finances are non-existent. At the moment, political parties are not owned by the people because the people are not financing them. Itβs time to change all of that.
Get your PVC. Vote. Join a political party. Donate funds. Be at the table. Participate in decision-making. Demand better.

You can make money from bees. They will produce honey and other products that you can sell. But in order to make money from them, you have to build them a place to live and work. An apiary is a location where beehives of honey bees are kept. The Triple- E team took out time to visit an apiary on the SCL farm and BHF Agroforestry project to show you what an apiary looks like, the types of hive, and environment.
Then we spoke to Chi Okafor of Kendake Honey and she taught us all about the business aspect of running an apiary. Listen to that episode now: https://anchor.fm/thebackstoryng/episodes/Money-making-buzz-interview-with-Chi-Okafor-of-Kendake-Honey-e1jdfl0

Friday the 20th of May is World Bee Day. This day has been designated by the United Nations as a day when we remind everyone about the roles that bees play in our ecosystem.
But a lot of people are afraid of bees. And it turns out that this fear is exactly what can kill us. On the one hand, fear can agitate the bees and cause them to attack us. And on the other hand, if we attack the bees and their environment, we will cause our own death. In this episode we ask the questions - should we be afraid of bees? And why do we even have bees in the first place? What are bees good for?

Last month, in March, Nigeriaβs Super Eagles hosted Ghanaβs Black Stars at the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja. It was the qualifying round for the World Cup and Nigeria lost. The expected behavior after a football match ends is for everyone to simply leave the stadium. But after last monthβs match ended, something strange happened: a crowd of spectators began to trash and vandalize the stadium. A complete opposite but equally strange behavior happened at the 2018 World Cup: Japanese spectators, en masses, cleaned up their trash from the stadium after they lost a match.
One word may explain the strange behaviors of the Japanese and our own: conformity.

In 1996, staff at Pilanesberg National park, a game reserve in South Africa, had a problem: young bull male elephants were on a rampage. They were going after visitors and attacking and killing the rhinos. This was definitely not normal behavior for elephants. The ecologists at Pilanesberg diagnosed the situation and came up with a plan that restored the natural balance in the park. No rhino has been killed by an elephant at Pilanesberg ever since.
Northern Nigeria has a problem: young men in their 20s and 30s are on a rampage. Can we look to the elephant for a possible solution?
