Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we at how Jesus prayed for Himself in the garden before He was betrayed. Readings are taken from Matthew 26:31-46 and Luke 22:39-46. Jesus goes to pray in the garden telling His disciples, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death". (Mt. 26:38). This very simple prayer of only one sentence is worshipful, emotional, and purposeful. The text in Luke makes it clear that it is a very fervent prayer. The emotional prayer is also physically tasking. Explore this prayer and learn how you can go to God in prayer in your weakest moments and come away stronger.

The text is found in John 17. Jesus' prayer in John 17 is a beautiful example of a prayer for others that is purposeful, emotional, and worshipful. Throughout the prayer He connects Himself to God the Father and to the disciples God gave to Him. He prays that the disciples will be one with Him and with God, just as He and God are one.

The beauty of the prayer is we, YOU and I, are included in it too! Explore this prayer and see how you can express thanks and glorify God while also making requests for others.

This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how Habakkuk prayed when he was questioning what was going on in his world around him. Context is from the book of Habakkuk.

Habakkuk lives during the later years of Judah before it is taken into captivity. The entire book is his taking his questions and concerns to God and God responding. Habakkuk is told to write these things down so when it comes time for these things to happen, the people will know why and how to respond. But it is not Habakkuk's job to go out and preach to Judah. God is teaching Habakkuk in response to his questions. Explore the prayers in this book with me and see if God shows us how we can be troubled while also having faith in God.

After many long years, David finally finds rest from the conflict that started with Saul back when David was a young man. He expresses his thanksgiving to God in a prayer that evokes deep personal and emotional connections to the freedom found in God's salvation.

What happens when you repeat these phrases?

The Lord is my rock. The Lord is my fortress. The Lord is my deliverer. My God My rock - in whom I take refuge. My shield. the horn of my salvation My stronghold My refuge My savior.

These are the declarations David makes at the beginning of this prayer.

Do you state God's impact on the events in your life this way? This episode encourages you to make your prayers for personal and worshipful just like David does. Find the vitality in God's salvation through telling God what you have learned He has done for YOU.

This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how Hannah prayed for her "great concern and provocation" and ini her joy in 1 Samuel 1 and 2. Hannah is a woman distressed because she does not have a child. Her husband has another wife who has been able to give him children. This woman would provoke Hannah "bitterly" because of her lack of children. What can we learn about prayer from this? 1. We can pray to God in our distress and in our joy. 2. God hears us even if no one else knows you're praying. 3. Trusting in God is the answer to every question and concern you may have. 4. Reverence isn't only found in prayers that speak only praise to God. Similar to Moses' prayer for Miriam in episode 403, Hannah's prayer shows us we can cry out to God in our dismay over a terrible situation. Prayer doesn't have to be complicated. When we get what we asked for, but at a time later than we expected, it is still a sign God heard and answered. Don't hesitate to pray for the things that you want. Don't hesitate to take the events that pain you to the Lord.. Your job is to ask and trust. Go back and check out Episode 401 to learn more about how Jesus taught to approach God in prayer.

This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how Moses prayed for his sister, Miriam, after her sin in Numbers 12. Numbers 12 records an incident where Miriam and Aaron let their envy show when they don't approve of Moses' choice of a wife. Instead of expressing their issue about the marriage, instead they claim that Moses has elevated himself in importance. They loft themselves up to an equal place with Moses and God hears them. God calls the three out of the tent and confronts them directly. He commends Moses and then punishes Aaron and Miriam by causing Miriam to become leprous. Aaron cries out to Moses and Moses cries out to God. Moses prays one sentence, "O God, heal her, I pray!" God hears Moses, but He doesn't change His mind this time (as he did in the prayer we discussed in episode 402). What can we learn about prayer from this? We can cry out to God in our dismay over a terrible situation. Someone's sin doesn't need to stop us from praying for their circumstances to be improved. Prayer doesn't have to be complicated. When we get what we asked for, but at a time later than we expected, it is still a sign God heard and answered. Don't hesitate to pray for someone's tragedy, no matter what you know about their life the rest of the time! Let God be the righteous and merciful Judge that He is. Your job is to ask and trust. Go back and check out Episode 401 to learn more about how Jesus taught to approach God in prayer. This whole series is to help you see that your messy, muddy prayers are just as worshipful as the ones said in an orderly fashion at another time. God just wants you to PRAY. This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how Moses prayed on Mt Sinai for the sins of the people..

Exodus 32 is major event in between Israel being in captivity in Egypt and the promised land of Canaan. God is giving Moses the law, written by His own hand, on tablets of stone. Then God tells Moses there is trouble in the camp and God wants to focus on His anger against the people. He tells Moses He wants to create the nation again from Moses because He is going to destroy them all. Moses now pleads the case for God's plan for mankind. It is a logical prayer based on God's promises to Abraham. God hears Moses and changes His mind. THEN Moses goes down to the camp and actually sees with his own eyes what the people have done. Now Moses is emotional. He directs the Levites in executing God's punishment on the people and then Moses prays again. This time his prayer is more emotional. He is begging for mercy and forgiveness for the people. If God says their lives are forfeit, he would rather go with them (remember God offered to create a nation from him just a bit before when he was on the mountain) to death. Logic and emotion. Pleas or an orderly case laid out for God. All are proper in prayer when directed toward God in a way that acknowledges His sovereignty and glorifies Him. Your messy, muddy prayers are just as worshipful as the ones said in an orderly fashion at another time. God just wants you to PRAY. Take the time to study prayer so you can be more diligent about prayer. This is your conversation with God! Make it a good conversation.

  • The Bible uses lots of patterns. God shows us He had a plan for mankind before He created the Earth. He tells us to follow the patterns set out by faithful brethren. He gave Noah a pattern to follow for the Ark. God gave Moses a detailed pattern for the Tabernacle. Using God's word to establish a path for you to follow is a good thing. Today's episode looks at how to study in a way that you can find those patterns. Then it shows how to use the pattern for yourself or for others you may be trying to teach.

  • When you study your Bible you will sometimes come across a verse that is hard to understand on its own. The phrasing may be different from what you are used to. The verse may be talking about things normal for ancient times or first century time, but not at all normal for modern times. The words may just be weird!

Good thing God prepared His word to be timeless!

In today's episode Angela looks at several contexts that some have described as "being hard to understand what is meant". she walks through exploring the context to see how God fills in the blanks that may seem to be in one verse. Learn how to use the context to explain hard to understand verses or concepts. God is the best author and His own best commentator. Trust the context He has provided.

Scriptures looked at in the episode are:
    Matthew 7:1-5
    Phillipians 4:10-20
    Genesis 39:1-6
    John 6:26-65

  • Join Angela as she walks through how to see and note different layers in one context. This allows you to build layers into your own Bible study each time you come to the same context.

Angela looks at where Peter validates that there are some things in scripture that are hard to understand. That means you are not alone AND God understands that you may find it difficult sometime. Isn't that amazing?!

Study talks about how to use scripture writing to help you better comprehend what you are reading. Bible marking is explained as a way to help you retain what you have learned so when you come back to a scripture you start with a foundation of what you've already learned before.
