We will do you a favor and discuss the movie "A Simple Favor" in Episode 75! This movie was a different Mystery/Thriller that manages to find a balance between comedy and suspense. Oscar found that the third act ruined the story that was built before due to all of the twists and turns. Donnie found that the performances by the actors managed to keep the dark comedy intriguing and worthy of following until the end. Both found issues with the choices made by the characters that resulted in making the twists a little unbelievable or inorganic. The movie manages to be entertaining and fun to experience as it provided a new way of providing a mystery story complete with strong performances from Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. Check out what the guys gave as a "Reel" score for this movie!

The Reel-ists discuss the movie "White Boy Rick", the true story of Richard “Rick” Wershe Jr., in Episode 76! This was the first time Donnie and Oscar were exposed to this true story and both found the movie to be emotional as a result of the great performances by the actors. Oscar appreciated how accurate the movie remained in telling this story as it provided an honest take rather than a Hollywood version with snippets of truth. Donnie found the locations and character portrayals allowed this movie make a bigger impact as it made the story more believable and not glamorized. The father and son relationship was the driving force that kept the movie going. While the movie manages to tell this unbelievable story, it manages to stumble when it comes to supporting characters. The guys still found this movie to be a success especially for new actor Richie Merritt. Check out what the final “Reel” score for this movie is!

A best way to end the summer blockbuster season with a fun thriller as we explore "Searching" in Episode 72! Ruben was satisfied with the film up until one of the surprise twists towards the end was revealed. Listen to hear what else the guys had to say about "Searching".

This movie provided Oscar and Donnie new historical information showcases its importance. Oscar found the movie to be able to explain the history well enough with excellent performances. Donnie appreciated the performances all around as he was able to understand the significance of this moment to not just the secret agents but the community that was affected by the Holocaust. While the slow pacing did hurt the movie, it was understandable due to the nature of the story. It may not be the best adaptation of a true story but it does manage to effectively showcase a significant moment from the fallout of the Holocaust. In episode 69 of “The Reel-ists Podcast”, Oscar and Donnie discuss the new adventure flick “A-X-L.” Both appreciated the film for its science fiction elements, and noted that the actors did well with their performances as well. Unfortunately, those were about the only positive things in the film. Oscar felt that the plot had many holes in it. Donnie feels the film comes across like a first draft of what this movie could have been. Listen to hear more on what Donnie and Oscar thought of “A-X-L.”

God bless America…and “The Reel-ists Podcast”! In episode 66, Oscar and Donnie review the new Spike Lee film “BlacKkKlansman.” Out of all the films the duo have discussed and reviewed, this film was definitely one the most “heavy” in terms of subject matter. Both the guys agree that this film takes a look into a very dark time in our nation’s history, all while reminding us that even though we’ve made strides as a nation, we still have such a long way to go. Aside from the important message, Donnie and Oscar were impressed by the performances, notably by John David Washington and Adam Driver. Listen to hear what else the duo had to say about “BlacKkKlansman.”

“The Meg” is discussed on episode 65 of “The Reel-ists Podcast.” Oscar and Donnie knew exactly what to expect with this movie, anticipating a fun popcorn flick with movie star Jason Statham saving the day! Listen through to the end to hear what “Reel” scores the guys give.

A group of friends who rebel, have powers, and go on an adventure sounds familiar but as Episode 64 shows The Darkest Mind is an another enjoyable movie. Though expectation was not high from the trailers and marketing, the movie managed to be entertaining enough to see it through but left The Reel-ists wanting more. Donnie found the movie left some questions unanswered which worked as both good and bad for the movie. Oscar found the chemistry between the actors and their characters to be a highlight for this movie as it became the driving force for the movie. Both noticed many predictable beats and cliche tropes that didn't make the movie stand out amongst other young adult adaptations. While this movie felt that it was pulling from stories we have recently seen, there was still just enough that helped keep this movie (and possibly new franchise) entertaining. Find out how this all leads to the final “Reel” score for this movie!

A journey into the Hundred Acre Woods we go to catch the latest movie Christopher Robin in Episode 63! Donnie and Oscar explore their own childhood and reflect on their special plush friend. Donnie enjoyed this movie for the message delivered regarding prioritizing the important things in life. While not exactly the kind of movie little kids would understand entirely, it still delivers a fun adventure for them to enjoy with Winnie the Pooh and friends. Oscar thought this movie manages to capture that realistic change a person goes from child to adult and managed to keep the spirit of the child within the characters. While the movie does bring the story into a complete conclusion for Christopher Robin as a character, the movie does not manage to explain the world of Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Both enjoyed the return of Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Check out the “Reel” score by the guys for this unique take on the Winnie the Pooh franchise.

Both noted that the film was impeccable, due to its cast, plot, cinematography and so much more. Oscar loved that this film was able to stand alone on its own. Donnie loved the adrenaline ride he was taken on, and how every twist and turn left him only wanting more. Both also compare this film to other great action films they’ve seen, and Oscar shares where “Fallout” falls on his list of favorite “Mission Impossible” movies. You get two for the price of one in this episode of “The Reel-ists Podcast”! Episode 61 discusses the film “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.” Team Reel-ists had mixed reviews about this film, being that Donnie and Oscar viewed this film from two different perspectives. Oscar, who has seen the tv series, appreciated the fact that the characters were exactly the same from the tv show he’s grown to love. However, Oscar also felt that there was a missed opportunity to incorporate something that would distinguish the film from the tv series. Donnie wasn’t enamored with the film, stating that while it is a great movie for kids to see, it might “miss its mark” with older audience members. In the second half of this episode, Donnie and Oscar give an update on their experiences with both Moviepass and AMC Stubs, and tell us about an important decision they’ve made with both subscriptions moving forward.

We like the internet but that didn’t stop us from reviewing Unfriended: Dark Web in Episode 60 with special Guest, Angel! The guys and Angel may not claim this to be this year’s best horror but the theme of how dark the internet can get definitely stands out. Oscar found this to be an improvement from the first movie and definitely managed to use the theme effectively. Angel enjoyed this movie despite not being scared but appreciated the story and the diverse cast. Donnie enjoyed the performance of the cast particularly of Colin Woodell who effectively showed emotions that helped build a connection and interest in the story. As a horror film, the movie is unable to shy away from many horror cliches but still manages to tell a story that keeps interest to the end. The theme of the dark web is one that definitely delivered as it gets you thinking about the reality of how dangerous the internet can be. Check out how this horror film stands with everyone’s “Reel” score!

“Reel-ists Podcast, here we go again, my, my how can I resist you?” Catchy right? Well, we got plenty of great things to say about "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" in Episode 59! Donnie and Oscar both found this sequel managed to top the original as it was able to bring the fun music with an interesting story that worked better. Oscar enjoyed the performances of all actors believing that they were able to bring the same energy as the original and the new actors matched that energy. However, he believed there was insufficient time for many characters to develop especially those that are returning from the first movie. Donnie found the movie to be an improvement in its story as it told both the past and current plots in a way that you can follow. Despite Donnie does believe that the movie had a few plot inconsistencies and a few questions left unanswered. Both agree that this is a standout performance for Lily James as she gets to show she is a versatile actor. So with all the good things to say, check out with the final “Reel” score will be for this movie!

In Episode 58 of “The Reel-ists Podcast”, the film “Skyscraper” is up for review. Not too many disappointments here, as both Donnie and Oscar knew exactly what to expect from this movie, being that it’s a summer blockbuster starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The popcorn flick had an interesting plot, likeable characters (unlikable for the villains), intense camera shots (much edited with CGI) and more. The Reel-ists Podcast was, admittedly, fairly lenient with not grading/ critiquing the film to harshly and even overlooked its minor hiccups to focus in on the overall entertainment value. Listen to hear what Oscar and Donnie had to say about “Skyscraper”.

Sorry to bother you, but if you haven’t done so already, check out episode 57 of “The Reel-ists Podcast”! Oscar and Donnie discuss the film “Sorry to Bother You” starring Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson. To say this film was unique is an understatement. Oscar and Donnie both agreed that the film depicted serious social concerns (like socioeconomic injustice, race, corporate greed, etc.) in a very satirical way. Both also felt the film was unapologetic in its use of surrealism, along with the metaphors used throughout. While both applauded the film for its creativity, they also noted some things that might be potential problems for some viewers. Oscar felt that the film was marketed in a certain light, and in actuality, the storyline goes pretty far left midway through the film and ultimately ends up shifting the film into another genre. Donnie compared the film to Foie Gras, forewarning that this film is not going to suit everyone’s palette. However, “Sorry to Bother You” is definitely one of the most original and thought provoking films of this year so far, and “The Reel-ists Podcast” applauds it on those grounds alone.
