Jules has a thirty year career working on sustainable development within and at the interfaces of the worlds of business, government and civil society. Jules’ career has been in and around politics with the UN, at the EC in Brussels, London and Washington. He has also been active in the development of purpose and sustainability led businesses working with CEOs, Boards and senior management of many of the world’s largest companies. In particular, Jules has been a driving force behind the Responsible Policy engagement guidelines which provides guidance on the corporate approach, accountability framework and guidance on disclosure. The guidelines force alignment between corporate climate action with policy engagement, and inevitably highlight discrepancies in certain instances.   • In this episode of the Sustainability & You podcast we interview Martin Hartley, world renown polar photographer. We talk about the power of photography and the visual arts in educating people on the impact of climate change, with a particular focus on Martins work in the polar regions.Martin has spent more than 400 demanding days working in the Arctic and Antarctica on more than 20 polar expeditions and assignments. Time magazine has acknowledged Martin’s contribution to science with its prestigious Hero of the Environment award for his research work on multiple surveys of the frozen Arctic Ocean. In 2017 Martin joined a North Pole expedition to collect snow depth measurements for the European Space Agency’s CryosSat (sic) programme, which is being conducted in concert with NASA’s Operation IceBridge (sic) mission.Martin’s passion for using his hard-won expedition and photographic expertise to benefit the future of our planet has taken him beyond the polar regions to desert, jungle, mountain and oceanic environments. He has documented indigenous communities, corporate responsibility initiatives and groundbreaking scientific programmes.

  • In this episode of the Sustainability & You podcast we speak to Maya de Souza. Maya leads the Business in the Community’s (BITC) Circular Economy Taskforce considering the connection between better management of resources, safeguarding natural environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the vital role that business can play in achieving change.

    Prior to this, Maya led Defra’s (the UK Government Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs) Circular Economy Policy and International Engagement Team. Her responsibilities included developing policy and a programme on waste prevention, taking forward the development of policy measures to support designing out of waste through standards and consumer information, analysing the relationship between the policy framework and a transition to a circular economy, as well as engaging internationally in this field.

    She has broad environmental policy experience from working on the natural environment – leading on soil protection policy and farming standards – as well as flood risk and green public procurement.

  • In this episode of the Sustainability & You podcast, we interview Daniele Visioni. Daniele is a Post-Doctoral Associate at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). He has a PhD in Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry at Università degli Studi di L'Aquila (Italy) in 2018. We talk about the different use cases of climate modelling, their accuracy, interpretation and how they can evolve. In particular, we focus on the reliance placed on them in certain quarters of the financial community and emphasis a degree of caution that should be exercised in doing so.   • In this episode of the Sustainability & You podcast, we interview Mindy Hernandez, discussing the intersection of behavioural science and sustainability. Mindy leads the World Resources Institutes’s Living Lab for Equitable Climate Action (https://www.wri.org/initiatives/living-lab-equitable-climate-action). She is an applied behavioural researcher focusing on pro-social behaviours like energy conservation, voting, and medication adherence. Previously, Mindy advised governments, companies, donors, and NGO’s around the world on applying behavioural science to measurably improve programs and policies, including working as a liaison to the White House’s Social and Behavioural Science Team for the U.S. Agency for International Development. We talk about the role of behavioural science in the formulation of environmental policy, influencing behavioural change in particular as it relates to demand side responses, the moral aspects of consciously influencing behaviours and the further potential of behavioural science as an instrument to move us towards net zero goals.   • In this episode of the Sustainability & You podcast, Stephanie Glover and I speak with Christopher Jackson, CEO of Protium Green Solutions Ltd, a UK green hydrogen energy services company. Chris originally began working on hydrogen through the World Bank, where his research helped secure the Bank’s first internal funding for Hydrogen & Fuel research in over a decade. Subsequently Chris became an advisor to colleagues within the World Bank and IFC on hydrogen and fuel cell projects. Chris founded Protium in 2019. They build, own, operate and finance green hydrogen and renewable energy infrastructure assets, and from those provide hydrogen as an energy service (HESCO) to customers. The company’s mission is to power businesses with sun, wind and water. We talk about the role of hydrogen in the race to net zero, its use cases, the economic model for rolling it out more widely and the need to educate on its potential. Chris explains to us grass roots up how hydrogen has a critical role to play in the energy mix, and articulates some of the challenges in accelerating its progress, requiring convergence of policy, capital, and private enterprise.

Ben is CEO of Menhaden Capital Management LLP which manages London listed investment trust Menhaden Capital plc, which invests in business opportunities arising from the efficient use of energy and resources. You will know that we are passionate about giving voice to the next generation of leaders so what better way to do that than hand over the reigns to our Young Ambassadors. The ever impressive Georgia Stewart founded Tumelo in January 2018 to help every investor have positive impact. Tumelo’s solution gives retail investors and pension members visibility over their underlying fund holdings and a shareholder voice on issues they care about at companies they own, such as gender equality or climate change. Their white label software plugs into existing investment platforms and pension portals, driving positive engagement between investment providers and their clients and, ultimately, influencing better stewardship across the asset management industry. She’s also an Ex officio board member of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and an Advisor to the Board of Trade. Emma, with a background in finance, is a board member or advisor to many organisations which include The Prince’s Accounting for Sustainability Project, the Green Finance Institute, the Coalition for Climate Resilient Investment, the Centre for Greening Finance and Investment, the Council for Sustainable Business, the European Climate Foundation, and Menhaden PLC. Emma was the UK Commissioner to the Global Commission on Adaptation from 2018 until its sunset in January 2021.

  • In this episode of the Sustainability & You podcast we speak to Dr. Francis Wedin, Managing Director of Vulcan Energy Resources Limited, an Australian listed entity. Vulcan is a generator electricity from a geothermal source of brine located in the Upper Rhine Valley region of Germany. The brine is then taken to extract high grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate for the battery EV market. The extraction process for the lithium is in the feasibility stage of development. This method of lithium extraction will be a first of its kind zero carbon extraction process, providing a critical raw ingredient for the fast growing EV sector. Francis is a founder and leader of the business having taken it from ideation through to commercialisation of the process and product. He is an example of a much needed dynamic forward thinking leader, who is both passionate about the environment and focused on delivering value to Vulcan’s shareholders. He talks about how he developed the business, what it means to be a zero carbon business, the role of the corporate in delivering net zero, his approach to risk and opportunity development as well as what it means to be an effective green leader of the future.
