Today's episode is another conversation I had with the wonderful Tommy Edwin. We discussed Travis picking and talked about putting set lists together and whether choose the songs you think the crowd should hear, not the songs you think they want to hear. Tommy was wonderfully warm, engaging, and just generally a wonderful hang and I hope you enjoy our conversation about his music as much as I did!

When I think about the solo in this song, it has a gravity to it that makes it feel centuries old. You could almost imagine that it has been living underground in some secret grotto since time began, just waiting for the right song to come along and feed it. It feels like a primal life force all its own, as if Mike is possessed by it rather than being its architect and its master. And I know that isnât the case and the reality is that Mike Campbell just has such complete mastery over his instrument and over the musical form that he can write and play something this good and just make it sound effortless and timeless.
Todayâs guest conversation sees the return of the always entertaining Tommy Edwin. We chatted about the music heâs released since he was last on the show as well as Wildflowers and of course, this weekâs song. Once Iâm editing, I may break out part of our conversation to release as a standalone bonus episode, but for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy my chat with the marvelous and hugely talented, Tommy Edwin.

In the liner notes for Wildflowers and all the Rest, engineer Jim Scott remarks that âTom would write a song like âHoney Beeâ on the spot and the band would just follow him. There are dozens of recordings just starting a song and making it up from top to bottom, coming up with funny lyrics.â Of course, there are plenty of deep cut or inside examples of this that are well known to the hard core fans, such as Juju Beads and the more widely loved Girl on LSD, but immediately Honey Bee is different. Whereas those songs are all about the playfully silly lyrics, Honey Bee also has a propulsive, irresistible groove to go along with it.
Todayâs guest conversation is the most special one Iâve done so far. Iâve spoken to some fantastic musicians for this show and Iâve spoken to two men who have written seminal first hand accounts of Tomâs life and work. Iâve chatted with musicians and fans and have enjoyed every minute of it. But today, Iâm chatting to one of the people I love most in the whole world, my youngest daughter Emma. When I asked her if she wanted to be one of my guests for this season, she agreed a little tentatively, but when I asked her to pick a song from the album, her answer was immediate. So weâll dive into Honey Bee as well as where our musical tastes overlap as well as diverge. This was a wonderful conversation to have, so sit back, relax, and enjoy my conversation with my wonderful daughter, Emma Brown.

As journalist Jaan Uhelski writes in the Wildflowers and All the Rest liner notes, âIf Wildflowers is an album about taking stock of oneâs life, âOnly a Broken Heartâ is a watershed moment on that excavation of self.â Everything about the way the final album version of this song is arranged and produced caters toward that excavation. The busyness of the piano and bass in the alternative version is stripped out and the harmonica lead from the demo is also abandoned in favour of allowing those double-tracked vocals take the weight of the lyrics and drop them in your lap. Coming between the titanic Itâs Good to Be King and Honey Bee, this song could easily have become a little lost or overwhelmed but I think that, outro aside, the production choices on this song ensure that it holds its place as a sonic rest period and an eerie, forlorn interlude that acts as that âwatershedâ moment that Jaan Uhelski talks about

âIt's good to be king and have your own way. Get a feeling of peace at the end of the dayâ Thereâs security in success, but thereâs an ominous cautionary tone that creeps into the next line, âAnd when your bulldog barks and your canary sings, You're out there with winners, it's good to be kingâ. When your bulldog barks and your canary sings. Dogs usually bark as a warning. Canaries were used in coal mines to detect poisonous gasses and act as a grim, sacrificial alarm to miners. With that portentous line up front âyouâre out there with winners, itâs good to be kingâ becomes sarcastic and bitter to me. Yeh right, âitâs good to be kingâ, sure it is!

Legendary Nashville songwriter, Harlan Howard is purported to have coined the expression âthree chords and the truthâ and friend and colleague Bob Dylan is also remembered for the great line âAll I need is my red guitar, three chords and the truthâ. Well thatâs all this riff is. Three chords. No passing chords, no fancy inversions or suspended notes. Just three chords - D A E.
Mike Campbell was and is famously prolific in his writing and brought all of that work to Tom in case there was something there that connected. In this case, Tom saw the truth in those three chords and decided to write a masterpiece. It may have taken a while for the final brushstrokes to arrive, but when they did, they truly transformed a young girl with a faraway look in her eye into the Mona Lisa.

On certain days, I think âTime to Move Onâ is the best song on Wildflowers, on other days, other songs take that honour. Itâs a song that resonates with so many people because it gives us that glimpse into someone finding freedom, if not exactly peace.
Despite being the fourth most streamed song from Wildflowers on Spotify, "Time to Move On" was not played live very many times. In fact, on setlist.fm, it comes in tied with Swingin as the 58th most played song in Tomâs catalogue, behind tracks such as Drivin Down to Georgia and Melinda, which were never originally released as studio tracks. But Time To Move On has cult status among Petty fans as being another phrase thatâs used as a show of support for someone who has had some sort of pivotal event happen in their life and is at a crossroads of one kind or another.
This episode includes a conversation with Janet Lovell, who is one of the admins on the Tom Petty Nation Facebook group.

Weâre all quick to judge people, whether they cut us off in the fast lane, or donât hold a door open for us as weâre heading out of the grocery store. But we donât know what that person is going through, emotionally, psychologically, physically. That disconnect is amplified a hundredfold when itâs in the context of a famous person. Wealth and stardom and all the trappings of comfort donât mean much if your marriage is falling apart. So âYou donât know how it feels to be meâ shouldnât be viewed as a dismissive wave of the hand, it should be viewed as an invitation to empathy.

Everything about the way this song is crafted sneaks up on you. Itâs a masterclass in how you take an idea and flesh it out into a fully-fledged tour de force piece of art. And thatâs not to say that this song isnât wonderful when played just on an acoustic guitar, or on piano with just the vocal accompaniment. Itâs a great song in its bones, but itâs dressed in such elegant musical finery that it becomes this dazzling, breathtaking thing of beauty.

When climbers finally decide to take on the holy grail of all ascents, Everest, they first face a nine day journey to base camp, which includes two full rest days. This journey alone weeds out about thirty of explorers. Those who are lucky enough to make the arduous trek to the first staging post are then faced with Mount Everest growing ever upwards into the clouds before them. Well my fine friends, I finally made it to basecamp and Iâm staring up at my own personal Everest, relishing the challenge ahead, and looking forward to finding my own place among the Wildflowers.
Wildflowers is the album that converted me from a casual fan to a Pettyhead and is, in my opinion, one of the most perfect albums ever recorded.
I hope you enjoy this tenth season of The Tom Petty Project. Like the album, itâs been a long time coming and I hope I can do it justice.

One last non-Petty episode before we being digging into Wildflowers! This time, Russell Mark, from The Nextdoors is back to talk about their new single "Swing and a Miss". We talk about perfection in art and whether it's worth striving for, we nerd out over specific production choices and songwriting form, and of course, we talk about Gary Carter, and America's pastime. This is another special non-Petty episode of the podcast with the fantastic Jake Thistle, who found time in his insanely busy schedule to sit down with me to discuss his label debut, The Half Left Out. We chatted a little about Gainesville and Tom of course, but mainly we dug into the weeds around his full debut release, with topics ranging from album sequencing, how different producers bring different perspectives to songs, and how to avoid cliche: Jake has a fairly direct way of dealing with that! We also dug into the brilliant video for Brooklyn Can Wait and talked through each track in a little more depth.
Jake has a new live album coming out some time in the next few months and already has demos made for most of a new studio recording which will be coming sometime hopefully soon. In the meantime, make sure you check out https://jakethistle.com and go support Jake at a live show if heâs playing anywhere near you.

A really fun one today folks. John and Kevin dig deep into inclusions and ommissions from 1993's Greatest Hits. We have a conversation about formats (CD vs vinyl), chronological ordering vs sequencing, and whether ballads belong on Greatest Hits compilations. Both John and Kevin have one song that the other feels simply doesn't belong on the Greatest Hits album and have a fulsome conversation about their reasoning!

Todayâs episode is the third installment in my Petty 8ight series, where I bring in musicians who arenât Pettyheads, give them eight deeper cuts that they likely havenât heard before, and get their thoughts on them. In this episode, my willing newbies are Sean and Todd McGinity. The brothers are based in Winnipeg and have a long history of writing, recording and playing shows both together in bands as well as in other projects. Theyâre also both seasoned podcasters, with their show The SeanGeek and FastFret podcast rapidly approaching 500 episodes and Iâd urge you to check that out. Look further down in these notes for links to their bandcamp pages for the band Dome and their duo project Bros Before Gin.
LANGUAGE WARNING: As a heads up, this episode is a little sweary. It was later in the evening when we talked and it was more like three guys hanging out and shooting the shit rather than a more formal interview. As I knew they would, they brought some different perspectives to songs I know like the back of my hand, including an observation about Fault Lines that Iâd simply never noticed before!

A last very special thanks to Paul Zollo. Without his book, "Conversations with Tom Petty", this podcast wouldn't be nearly as much fun to research. And further thanks to Warren Zanes for his outstanding book "Petty, the Biography".

A major change in this cover version is the format of the lyrics. Something in the Air is a fairly ominous call to arms. The original was released in May of 1969 when the Vietnam War was still raging at its most furious. Speedy Keen said that told ZigZag magazine in 1975 of the song "It was a reflection of what I was seeing at the time". But rather than using the overtly observational third verse and the line âHand out the arms and ammo. We're gonna blast our way through hereâ, Tom repeats the first. He also switches up the first line of the second verse from the sinister âLock up the streets and houses Because there's something in the airâ to the much more optimistic and carefree âRun through the fields and houses because there's something in the airâ. If ever you have to try to define the word zeitgeist, using âsomething in the airâ as a synonym is pretty much the best you can do in my opinion and this is why Tom is able to co-opt an observation on the vietnam war into a song that carries a much more hopeful tenor.
Todayâs episode covers the second single from the Greatest Hits release, "Something in the Air".

When author Paul Zollo asks Tom about the song in his book Conversations With Tom Petty, and mentions that the song had been partially written some years previously, Tom confirms this, saying, âThat was one I wrote during the Full Moon Fever sessions. I wrote all but the chorus. I just had the loop going around and around and really had most of the words and everything. And I played the tape for Rick Rubin and he liked it a lot and suggested I write a chorus. There were maybe five years between the writing of the verses and the chorus.â Of course, all hardcore Pettyheads know that the lyrics that Tom initially came up with in the chorus were very different to what ended up on the recording. In 2020, Mike Campbell told Vulture magazine, âWhatâs funny is that when Tom wrote this song, when he first showed it to me, the chorus was, âHey Indiana girl, go out and find the world.â It was a completely different chorus and we all hated it. A few days later Tom came in and sang, âLast dance for[sic] Mary Jane.â
Todayâs episode covers the first single from the Greatest Hits release, the iconic "Mary Jane's Last Dance".

In March and April of 1992, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were wrapping up the European final leg of their Into The Great Wide Open tour. This leg saw them play dates in Germany, the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Norway, and on April 3rd, they closed out the tour in Malmo, Sweden, playing an extended set of 28 songs to 6000 Swedish fans, closing out with Learning to Fly, Making Some Noise, and then serene lullaby, Alright For Now. Tom couldnât have anticipated that on his return to Los Angeles, everything was very soon going to be very far from alright.
Todayâs episode covers the non-album single released in April 1992 "Peace in L.A.".

Today's episode is my ten questions with the brilliant Peter Nester. I usually put these out as bonus episodes in the same week as my chat with that guest, but Pete's answers to these questions were so thorough, considered, and beautifully expounded, that I felt this needed to be a regular release. I guarantee you'll hear which artist he wants to cover which Tom Petty song and go "Oh, damn, yeh I need to hear that!" and our discussion about which is his favourite album was a particular highlight of our conversation for me.
I know for sure that I'll be dragging Pete back onto the podcast at some future point and I know which season I'm shooting for, even though he doesn't!

This is a special non-Petty episode of the podcast. I havenât recorded one in ages, but when former guest Jeff Slate reached out to me to ask if Iâd be interested in talking to him about his new single which is out now and the album itâs from which will drop in May, it wasnât a hard sell for me as I'm a fan of both his music and his writing.
We had a great chat about throwaway lyrics, production differences when you bring in outside voices, and recording an album with people in remote locations during a pandemic lockdown. Jeffâs new album features a glittering array of star names, from Dave Stewart to Earl Slick, to Duff McKagan, all the way to OG heartbreaker Ron Blair.

I have two words for you: Yogi Berra. But what does the Yankees catcher have to do with my conversation with Pete Nester? Tune in to find out!
Today's episode is a sprawling, hugely enjoyable conversation I had with a fellow music podcaster who I've been listening to for a couple and a half years now. Pete was very supportive of this show right from the getgo and offered me some valuable advice when I was starting up around issues of music usage/rights etc. He's also just a damn fine human being and a great music critic. We talked about a whole host of topics, from the impact of grunge to whether podcasting changes the way you listen to music, to seeing Tom on the Into The Great Wide Open tour. This week it's a long one but I'm positive that you'll enjoy listening to it as much as I had being on one side of this wonderful conversation.
