Now this is an exciting wine! We didnât have super high expectations going in - the name Kerner does not scream âadventureâ - but we are telling you this is a white wine that is worth seeking out. Some call it one of the best white wines in Italy, and after tasting it, we agree, and so we are wondering why it does not get more love! It is a grape originally created in Germany as a cross between Riesling and Schiava/Trollinger to be a workhorse and handle cold weather, the Italians have made it into a rich, complex, and beautiful aromatic white wine. Confused about why this German wine is being made in Germany?!? Listen in and weâll tell you why! Both the wines we tried in this episode are excellent, and what is fun is that they are both a little different from each other - the Abbazia wine we would call adventurous and worth seeking out, and the winemaker is no slouch, having won the Gambero Rosso Winemaker of the Year in 2009. Trust us, this is an episode you will want to listen to. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2023 Kellerei Bozen Puntscheit Kerner, 2023 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner

When one of our listeners asked if we would be willing to explore wines from Croatia, we were a little hesitant - not because we didnât want to try them, but because we were worried that we would have a hard time finding them. Well, we were able to find some, and we are so glad that we did! Croatia is an area where they have been making wine for more than 5,000 years, yet despite their history, Croatian wines and wine varietals are not very well known outside of Croatia, nor are they super easy to find. Thatâs in part because they donât produce a ton of wine, and because they donât export a lot of their wine, either. But, we bet if you have been to Croatia you have tasted the wine and thought - why isnât this more available in other countries? We loved learning more about winemaking in Croatia, and we had a wonderful time trying two of their highest regarded wines in Plavac Mali and PoĆĄip, the latter of which has been called by some the greatest unknown grape varietal in the world! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2022 Bura-MrgudiÄ Plavac Fresh, 2023 Zlatan Otok PoĆĄip.

We had mixed expectations about Layer Cake Wines. On the one hand, Layer Cake was started by a winemaker who produces some of the most expensive and highest rated wines in the U.S. via their Hundred Acre label. On the other hand, âlayer cakeâ is hardly a name one would give a sophisticated, serious wine. So which one is it? In this latest episode, we try to give Layer Cake wines an honest shot to impress us, reserving our judgment until we had the chance to taste them. Weâll let you judge for yourself, but in our opinion, these are not good wines, or at least not wines for anyone who is serious about wine. And maybe thatâs the point. Very similar to our experience with Josh Wines, we think you can do much better at their price point. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2022 Layer Cake Creamy Chardonnay, 2021 Layer Cake Cabernet Sauvignon.

Is there such a thing as minerality in wine? Our taste buds tell us yes, but the science tells a different story. Is it a myth? Have the wine nerds and snobs brainwashed us to believe that minerality is a real thing? Is that really rock or seashell or gasoline or gunsmoke we are tasting in wine, or is it a bunch of hooey? In this minisode, we attempt to break down the facts and separate the evidence from the pseudoscience. But can we deny what our own palates tell us? Or have we fallen victim to a catfishing scheme against our own senses? The truth is out there - if we can face it.

What a beautiful wine! You may not have heard of Greco di Tufo, and you may not be familiar with wines from Campania in southern Italy, but we are hoping that we can change that! Greco is an ancient wine grape, brought to the area around Naples by the Greeks thousands of years ago, that nearly went extinct in this area of Italy. Thankfully, some hard working farmers and heritage wine making projects kept the wine alive, and we are the lucky benefactors today. There are only four DOCG designations in Campania - that is the highest designation of Italian wine - and Greco di Tufo is one of them. The name Tufo comes from a tiny town, but also from the volcanic soil, called tuff, that gives Greco di Tufo its distinct and beautiful flavor. If you are a white wine lover, and/or a seafood lover, this wine is a must try. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2021 VinosĂŹa Greco Di Tufo L'ariella, 2020 Feudi di San Gregorio Greco di Tufo

You know when they say âyou get what you pay forâ?!? That seems to fit pretty well with Trader Joeâs Reserve label wines. Look, youâre spending $10, so you probably shouldnât expect to be wowed. And the wines we tasted met that expectation. However, when a wine is a private label from a store like Trader Joeâs - similar to Costcoâs Kirkland brand - we think you should expect to get 2X the value for the price. In the case of Trader Joeâs Reserve wines, we think you kind of just get the value of the price on the bottle, which is disappointing. And, as usual, we donât pull any punches when it comes to reviewing these wines. We also dig into why Trader Joeâs wines are popular, and do some sleuthing about where their wines come from, but we end up being pretty skeptical - you know, skep?!?- about the quality of their production and taste of their wines. Quite frankly, these wines are not really for the wine snob in your life, they are wines for Tuesday night cheap pizza night. Keep your expectations in check and you wonât be disappointed. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2023 Trader Joeâs Reserve Arroyo Seco Monterey County Chardonnay Lot #262, 2023 Trader Joeâs Reserve Paso Robles Zinfandel Lot #265, 2022 Trader Joeâs Reserve Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah Lot #261

Sometimes an interview just feels magical. Like, you just happen to find two people who have amazing stories, who genuinely like each other, and who complement the other in terms of their philosophies and approaches, and that is what we found in this interview with Roman and Jens. Roman makes beautiful wine for Wölffer Estate, so beautiful, in fact, that Jens and his partner Rasmus wanted to include him in their amazing book RosĂ© Revolution. Look, you may not think you are a RosĂ© lover, but we think thatâs because you donât know RosĂ©, and this episode, and this book, are fantastic ways to learn more and appreciate more about RosĂ©. Roman and Jens have some absolute pearls of wisdom to share, like everyone can make wine in a good year, but the real proof of talent is how good their wine is in tricky years. Another pearl from Roman is that the key to a great wine is found in fighting just the right time to harvest it. The other wonderful thing about his interview is that it encompasses the concept of RosĂ© Revolution, which is that RosĂ© is a worldwide phenomenon, and in it you have a Dane, a German, and an American all talking about RosĂ© wine. What more could you want? Please join us for this awesome conversation!

Donât say we didnât warn you - because once you try this wine, you may never go back to Prosecco! Donât get us wrong. We like a nice Aperol spritz made with Prosecco, and Prosecco was the sparkling wine that opened our eyes to sparkling wine, but if you want a more elegant, interesting, and food friendly wine, Franciacorta cleans Proseccoâs clock! There is a reason that Franciacorta and not Prosecco is considered to be a competitor to Champagne. Made in the same method as Champagne (Prosecco is not) and from similar grapes (which, again, Prosecco is not), Franciacorta has a taste and mouthfeel that is unique and complex, and if there are some of you out there who just donât get what all the fuss is about Champagne or about Prosecco, you may find that Franciacorta is the sparkling wine you have been waiting for. We cover what the similarities and differences are between Franciacorta, Champagne, and Prosecco, and this week, we found two great Franciacorta wines that are excellent options if you are curious and donât want to break the bank. Wines reviewed in this episode: Contadi Castaldi Franciacorta Brut, Berlucchi Franciacorta '61 Extra Brut

This is what we call a âwow your friendsâ wine! First, itâs a wine they have probably never heard of. Second, it is a great wine for all sorts of different red wine lovers because it has hints of different wines like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. And third, it is a delicious wine that goes well with a wide variety of foods. That is, if you find the right BlaufrĂ€nkisch. And that is what we are here for! We want to expose our listeners to different types of wines, not just the same old Cabernet Sauvignon blends and Chardonnay, and we taste and review wines that we buy ourselves so we can give you the unvarnished and honest truth about how good - or not good - these wines are. And this week, we not only found a wine that we think is more than worth seeking out, we also found that each wine was a different experience. Join us to learn about what this wine, sometimes known as the Pinot Noir of the East, is all about - you will be glad you did! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2018 Weingut Burg Ravensburg Sulzfeld BlaufrĂ€nkisch, 2020 Prieler Johanneshöhe BlaufrĂ€nkisch

If you love Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, or Albariño, youâre going to also love MĂŒller-Thurgau because they all have something in common: they are all aromatic dry white wines! Now, if you donât know what aromatic white wines are, donât worry, weâll tell you all about them in this episode. Weâll even teach you what terpenes are and why they matter when it comes to aromatic dry white wines. Even better, weâll tell you how to pronounce MĂŒller-Thurgau, where the name came from (itâs a bit of a Frankensteinâs monster story), and why so much MĂŒller-Thurgau is grown in Italy. After tasting this wine, it is now on our go-to list for white wines - definitely worth learning about and adding to your wine repertoire. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2021 Muri Gries Alto Adige MĂŒller-Thurgau, 2021 Elena Walch MĂŒller-Thurgau

If you love Oregon wines and biodynamic wines, we have a treat for you! And, if you think you know Oregon wines, this episode is a must listen. Did you know that there are two major wine growing regions in Oregon? Itâs true! Most people think about the Willamette Valley, which is where our guest Morgan Beck is making beautiful Burgundy style wines for Johan Vineyards. But we bet you donât know that in Southern Oregon, where the climate and soils are much different, there are people like our other guest Vince Vidrine making beautiful RhĂŽne Valley style wines, like GSM and Viognier, and Vince makes these wines for Cowhorn Vineyard and Garden. Both of these winemakers are focusing on biodynamic wines - which in essence means they let the grapes and the juice and the specific weather and growing conditions each year tell them how the wines should be made each year. And it also means that they try and do less in the cellar and be more proactive in the vineyard. This was an amazing conversation, and if you want to learn more about wine, you would be hard pressed to find two better teachers than Morgan and Vince!

Holy smokes, did we find a great wine! If you or someone you know is a Sangiovese skeptic, just doesnât get what all the fuss is about Chianti wine, then you owe it to yourself and them to try this wine made from the Sangiovese Grosse grape, a mutation of the standard Sangiovese grape used in Chianti. You will become a convert. We promise! Hailing from the Montalcino region of Italy, just south of Siena, the same region that Brunello di Montalcino is from, is this fabulous wine made from the same grape as Brunello, but is a more affordable, and some say more approachable, cousin or sibling of Brunello. If you donât know, Brunello is one of the great wines of Italy, and this wine is no slouch either. Rich, complex, fruity, and balanced, this wine is fabulous with meat dishes, rich red sauce pastas and lasagnas, and spicy wood fired pizza. After listening to this episode, you will want to run to your local wine shop to load up on this wine! We donât often give such high scores to wines at this price point. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2020 Camigliano Rosso di Montalcino, 2021 Voliero Rosso di Montalcino.

How do you start a wine making partnership with Sarah Jessica Parker? It turns out, all you have to do is ask - as long as you have an award-winning wine brand and savvy business partners with years of experience. In this special episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with New Zealanders and business partners Tim Lightbourne and Rob Cameron of Invivo - where Rob is the winemaker and Tim is the director. After getting their degrees in physiology and one of them starting a pain relief cream business (not a joke), these childhood friends found themselves at a pub in England and hatched the plan for Invivo wines. Years of sweat and grit got them to where they are today, with an internationally known and distributed wine brand, and collaborations with Graham Norton and Sarah Jessica Parker. And in case you think these are just names slapped on the labels, Tim and Rob ensure that Norton and SJP are directly involved in the blending of their wines. Listen in to hear about their fascinating story, how storytelling is at the center of what they are trying to create, and learn more about their motto âBreak Dumb Rules.â

Once again, we present our version of Spotify Wrapped where we review the top 10 and bottom 10 wines we tasted and reviewed in 2024. Some of what we think makes our podcast different from other wine podcasts or wine publications and reviewers is that we share with you both the good and the bad. Most wine reviewers only share with you the wines they rate highly, but we share the wines we think you should avoid as well. We also let you listen into our actual tasting, so you can see how we are examining the wines and what flavors and smells we are getting - in real time. We do not change or adjust our tasting - you get the real real on what we think. And we use normal terms that people can relate to - like apple juice or lemon or cherry Twizzler rather than odd wine terms like quince and cassis. So, for our last episode of the year, you can hear the wines we liked the most and liked the least, and in our show notes, we will share with you the full list of wines we drank and our ratings for each!

Port is a fun and festive after-dinner drink during the Holidays. But, which one should you choose - Ruby Port or Tawny Port? Have no idea what we are talking about? Then this episode is just for you! Port is a sweet, fortified dessert wine from Portugal, and it comes in a few different styles that are actually pretty different from each other. We talk about what some of the differences are between the two, and we also talk about how Port is made. Curious about what a fortified wine is? Jump in! Want to know what robotic âPort Toesâ are? We got you covered! We also taste and review a Ruby Port and a Tawny Port, both reasonably priced, to help you decide which one you should bring to your Holiday shindig. Looking for a show stopping sparkling wine to serve this Holiday? Then look no further than Sparkling Shiraz! This is a sparkling red wine - yes, you heard us right - an honest to goodness red wine made (usually) in the same way that Champagne is made. In case you are wondering, Shiraz is what they call Syrah in Australia, so they are the same wine. Like all sparkling wines, Sparkling Shiraz can vary from sweet to brut, but this is not your grandmaâs sweet sparkling red wine. Sparkling Shiraz can be spicy, complex, earthy, and tannic - exactly like the still Syrah / Shiraz you know and love. In this episode, we explore how Sparkling Shiraz is made, reveal that it used to be known as Sparkling Burgundy, and let you know how you should serve it and what food to pair it with. And, we have two pretty different Sparkling Shiraz wines that we taste and review so you can choose something your guests (and you) will love! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2022 Paringa Sparkling Shiraz, The Chook Sparkling Shiraz

Chenin Blanc is the âitâ wine in South Africa, but is it worth the hype? Spoiler alert - if you like an oaky Chardonnay or white wines with some body, you may really like this wine! No one is really sure how Chenin Blanc got to South Africa, or why it has been called Steen there for centuries, but one thing is for sure - if you want to taste some of the best Chenin Blanc in the world outside of France, the first place you need to turn to is South Africa. South Africa makes more than 50% of all the Chenin Blanc in the world, and has a strong reputation today for making excellent wine - but it wasnât always the case. In this episode, we explore a bit of the history of Chenin Blanc from South Africa, and we taste and review two reasonably priced and easy to find South African Chenin Blancs which we bought at Total Wine (boo!) to see if they are worth your hard-earned money. And a shout out to listener Dominic who suggested this episode. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2024 Blaauwklippen Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc, 2023 Spier Seaward Chenin Blanc

This week we had the honor and privilege to sit and talk with Leslie Frelow and Aamira Garba, two amazing women making waves in the wine world. Leslie calls herself the Owner & Chief Discovery Officer of The Wine Concierge, and that title is perfect because she seeks to sell wines from boutique wineries owned by women and underrepresented groups. Aamira is the CEO and Winemaker for LoveLee Wine who built her wine brand from scratch after deciding that she was tired of living the âcheckbox life.â Leslie and Aamira share with us how they each came to careers in wine through passion and perseverance, and both of their stories are examples of grit, determination, hard work, and talent. We think after you hear from them youâll want to learn more and experience what each has created.

Picpoul translates to âlip stingerâ in the original dialect, and this is not your typical high acid white wine. In fact, we were pretty surprised by this wine overall. It had more body (read: alcohol) than a typical zippy white wine, and more body as well. Although it is often called a summer sipper, this wine felt more like a fall wind-breaker. Picpoul is not a commonly grown wine grape, and does best in Mediterranean climates like where it is from in Languedoc in the south of France. We explore a bit of this wine and wine regionâs long history, and learn about how this wine is made and a bit about the winemakers themselves. If you are a white wine lover, or even if you are white wine curious, this is a great episode for you to expand your wine horizons. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2022 Domitia Picpoul de Pinet, 2022 Domaine Font-Mars Picpoul de Pinet.

You may think that RosĂ© is a summer wine, made for sipping by the pool - but did you know it is the perfect pairing for Thanksgiving?!? We ainât sh*&^ing you!
